Damn. 23 Males Die In South Africa From Circumcision According to Raw Story South African police said Friday they had launched a series of murder inquiries after 23 males died while undergoing circumcision during traditional rites of passage into manhood. The 23 — aged between 13 and 21 — died in various places across the country’s northeastern Mpumalanga province over the course of a week. “We have opened 22 cases of murder and one of inquest,” regional police spokesman Leonard Hlathi told AFP. One of the deaths was labelled “inquest” because the boy reportedly had an existing health condition. There have been no arrests yet as police compile statements and await post-mortem results. Ritual circumcision is common among South Africa’s ethnic Xhosa, Sotho and Ndebele ethnic groups. Deaths at so-called initiation schools in South Africa are common, with several hundred cases recorded in recent years due to bleeding and infections. Boys spend around a month in secluded bush or mountains areas for the sessions that also include lessons on the virtues of masculine courage and discipline. There are usually two circumcision seasons – in winter during the months of May through July and in summer between November and December. Government and the ruling African National Congress Party have expressed concern at the deaths which have nonetheless sparked little public outrage. Government spokeswoman Phumla Williams called on the initiation schools “to ensure that precautionary health measures are exercised during this period to minimise illnesses and death.” Minister in The Presidency for Performance Monitoring and Evaluation, Collins Chabane said he was saddened by the loss of young lives. The “loss of several young lives in Mpumalanga and elsewhere in the country is regrettable,” Chabane said this week. Carmelo Anthony lost his cool after Boston Celtics bigmouth Kevin Garnett reportedly said his wife “tastes like Honey Nut Cheerios” — a dig at Anthony, who is estranged from his bangin’ wife, leading some to think they are heading to Splitsville soon! Via NY Daily News reports: The NBA superstars nearly came to blows Monday night after Garnett incorporated the General Mills cereal in a fit of trash talking about reality TV-star La La Anthony. “Your… wife tastes like Honey Nut Cheerios,” Garnett told Anthony in a heated Eastern Conference game at Madison Square Garden, according to the website Black Sports Online. Garnett’s slight came off as offensive and tasteless to Melo, who is having marital problems, a source told the Daily News. Garnett and Anthony had to be separated on court and both were hit with technical fouls. But the insult left Anthony so upset he sought out Garnett after the 102-96 Knicks loss, apparently to settle the score. An infuriated Anthony yelled at Garnett outside the Celtics’ locker room immediately after the game. He then tried to confront Garnett later as the Celtics were boarding their team bus to leave the Garden. Anthony and his wife have been living apart for at least two months , and La La rang in the New Year without him in Miami’s South Beach, the source said. “Getting ready to shut down Miami TONIGHT. Happy New Year!” La La tweeted from South Beach on New Year’s Eve. Anthony refused Tuesday to confirm what Garnett said to set him off, but he acknowledged that the caustic Celtic “crossed the line.” On her Twitter account, the Brooklyn-raised La La, 33, was asked about Garnett’s trash talk by fans, but she refused to take the bait. “Living life. Counting blessings, not burdens,” said La La, star of the VH1 reality show “La La’s Full Court Life.” La La attended Monday night’s game, her first after a noticeable absence from the Garden. Last season, La La attended nearly every home game and even traveled on the road to watch the team play. She’s also curbed her tweets about Melo this season after tweeting about him regularly last year. Looks like KG has sparked the match that lit the rumor mill on fire. Say it ain’t so! It’s not looking good for this Rebekah Brooks character: The U.K. police investigation into alleged phone hacking took a dramatic turn Sunday with the arrest of Rebekah Brooks, the former chief of News Corp.’s U.K. newspaper unit who resigned Friday. London’s Metropolitan Police, known as Scotland Yard, arrested her around noon Sunday when she appeared by appointment at a London police station. She hadn’t been charged. It was the 10th arrest by police in a dual probe investigating allegations of voicemail interceptions and corrupt payments to police. The allegations focus on the News of the World, News Corp.’s Sunday tabloid that the company recently closed after 168 years amid an escalating scandal. By midafternoon on Sunday, Ms. Brooks remained in police custody along with her legal representation, according to a spokesman for the former News International chief executive. “She is assisting police at the moment,” the spokesman said, noting that the appointment with police was prearranged. “Until that’s completed, I can’t really say any more.” Ms. Brooks is due to come under public scrutiny this week when she appears before a parliamentary committee alongside News Corp. Chairman and Chief Executive Rupert Murdoch and his son, James Murdoch, News Corp.’s deputy chief operating officer. The trio will face questioning from U.K. politicians about the hacking and whether executives previously misled parliament. The News Corp. phone-hacking scandal involves allegations that the company’s News of the World tabloid illegally accessed mobile-phone voice mails and bribed police to get information. The scandal has been simmering for years but escalated to a new level recently with the allegation that the paper in 2002 hacked the phone of a missing 13-year-old girl who turned out to be dead. Ms. Brooks had become the public face of the scandal and for many British lawmakers their chief target. Chris Bryant, the Labour lawmaker who has pushed the issue hardest, said he was “delighted” by the news, and that Ms. Brooks should have been arrested in 2003 when she told a parliamentary committee that News International had paid police officials. Mr. Bryant thinks that police attention should now focus on James Murdoch, given he was privy to payments made to several people who had complained of phone hacking. “It feels as if the water is lapping around the feet of the Murdoch family now,” he said. Bff’s Ciara and Lala made an appearance at Madison Square Garden last night to cheer on Carmelo and the rest of the New York Knicks as they took on the Cavs. Lala brought along her cutesy son, Kiyan and of course her reality camera’s which were filming her every more for their new reality show, “Full Court Life” , which is set to debut sometime this summer. Although the Knicks took an L to the Cavs, LaLa and CiCi seemed to be having a great time, chatting it up, laughing and twitpicing photos from their courtside seats.
