Adam Lambert Says Susan Boyle’s Album Made Him Laugh

‘I’m happy for her success, but that album is terrible,’ Lambert says of LP that outsold his own. By Jocelyn Vena Adam Lambert Photo: Mark Von Holden/ WireImage When Adam Lambert released his debut album For Your Entertainment in November, he was able to best both Rihanna and pal Lady Gaga on the albums chart. But he was still outsold by one other reality show contestant: Susan Boyle. “I know, if only it weren’t for Susan Boyle!” the “American Idol” alum joked in the March issue of the U.K.’s Gay Times magazine “I’m happy for her success, but that album is terrible. [The cover of the Rolling Stones’] ‘Wild Horses’ is the one that made me laugh the hardest. I just died when I heard it. I was crying with laughter. It was the most horrendous, sacrilegious treatment of that song!” And though his criticism of Boyle’s album sounds harsh, Lambert is more intent on silencing his own critics. “Still, when my album charted, it was validating,” he added. “I was feeling bit attacked, like I had to vindicate something. I thought: ‘Wow, look what I did.’ ” Three months after his American Music Awards performance , Lambert told the magazine that he’s still surprised by the public’s response to the show. “It catches me off guard,” he said. “In my circle, and in a lot of the underground clubs and performance spaces in Los Angeles nobody thinks twice about it, they love it. Then I gave what I thought was a harmless performance and everybody jumps down my throat about it. And I’m like, ‘Sorry, I didn’t realize it was going to be that big a deal.'” Lambert also didn’t think his glam album cover for For Your Entertainment would be so talked about. “With the soft focus, and the retouching nobody would have said a word [if it was a girl on the cover],” he said. “Here in the States, a lot of people are really uncomfortable with it, which is hilarious.” Earlier this month, Lambert told MTV News that he was excited to tour overseas, where he thinks his on- and offstage antics won’t seem so controversial. “I think the European audiences are generally a little more liberal,” he said. “I’m sure there are certain things that I do that won’t upset people as much as they do here.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Adam Lambert Related Photos MTV News’ 2009 Men Of The Year: #3 Adam Lambert MTV News’ 2009 Women Of The Year: #8 Susan Boyle Related Artists Adam Lambert Susan Boyle

Adam Lambert Rips Into Susan Boyle

They were linked throughout 2009 as artists that burst onto the scene and captured the heart of music fans in wholly contrasting ways: Adam Lambert was loud, in your face, sexy, gay, proud and confident. Susan Boyle was quiet, timid, reliant on an opera-like voice that’s been hidden inside a (let’s face it) ugly body. Both released debut albums in November, with Boyle’s breaking records and dominating the charts for months. Lambert’s fared well, but it didn’t stand out in nearly the same way. Now, Adam has ripped into the Scottish singer, saying in a recent interview : If only it weren’t for Susan Boyle! I’m happy for her success, but that album is terrible. “Wild Horses” is the one that made me laugh the hardest. I just died when I heard it, I was crying with laughter. It was the most horrendous, sacrilegious treatment of that song! We’re enormous fans of Lambert and have defended him against critics since his run on American Idol . But it’s hard to have any reaction to these comments aside from: Bitter much?!? Lambert’s honest and open attitude is a major appeal, but anyone can go too far. When the target is a singer who has outsold him by millions, the attack just seems fueled by jealousy and pettiness. There’s plenty of room on the charts for you and Susan, Adam. Just relax, keep making great music and have no doubt that you’ll be around for many, many years.

Adam Lambert, John Legend Sing G-Star’s Praises During Fashion Week

‘It is high-fashion, but it’s also their vision and their brand,’ says celeb spokesmodel Liv Tyler. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Tim Kash Adam Lambert attends the G-Star fashion show Tuesday Photo: Jamie McCarthy/ Getty Images NEW YORK — It’s New York Fashion Week, and that means the models are primped, the celebrities are front row and the designers are putting the finishing touches on their designs. And, on Tuesday night, the fashionistas flocked to Hammerstein Ballroom to check out the latest collection from denim brand G-Star. Adam Lambert, Estelle and John Legend sat front row alongside the company’s latest celebrity spokesmodel, Liv Tyler, to see the models strutting down the catwalk in funky jeans and brightly colored frocks. “I’ve been pretty excited and lucky,” Tyler told MTV News about her role as the company’s face. “I’m enjoying it a lot, because it’s something I’ve never really done before. I like the brand as a whole. I really like what they’re doing. It’s sort of fashiony, but it’s not. … It is high-fashion, but it’s also their vision and their brand. It’s authentically them.” Tyler isn’t the only fan of the company; Kelly Osbourne also made her way to the show. “They’re my favorite denim line, to be honest, because I love the cuts, and they always push the boundaries a bit,” she said. “Their textiles are amazing. When you get up close, there’s always something about it that’s a little quirky.” Fellow Brit Estelle raved about the fit of the brand’s signature jeans. “The jeans fit! Black-girl booty, and the jeans fit!” she laughed. “The structure is great, but the brand is definitely a go-to. Nothing is rubbish.” Mena Suvari said the G-Star show is a regular stop on her Fashion Week schedule. “When I’m here in New York for Fashion Week, I like to support my friends, and I’ve been coming to G-Star for a few years now, and they are so wonderful to us,” she said. “And to me, it’s denim couture. It’s just awesome to see. It’s really different and sexy and interesting. Their denim rocks, and it’s comfortable and unique. It’s special, and they always have the best shows.” “American Idol” runner-up Adam Lambert heard about the show through the grapevine. “I was just told this is the place to be,” Lambert said. “So I thought, ‘All right, I’ll put on my duds and be here.’ ” Legend decided to check out the show this year after he had become a fan of the company’s clothes. “I thought it would be fun. I like what they do,” he said. “I think they got a cool brand and cool energy around their brand.” “One Tree Hill” star Robert Buckley said that even if you don’t like the clothes, the show is just too awe-inspiring to miss. “G-Star’s the one company — they don’t put on a fashion show, it’s more like a fashion spectacular ever year,” he said. “It’s like Cirque du Soleil-meets-high fashion, and so I’m honestly excited to see what they pull out of the hat this year.” Related Videos A Front Row Seat To Fashion Week Related Artists Adam Lambert John Legend

Adam Lambert Prepares To Take On The World

The ‘American Idol’ runner-up is eager to tour overseas, where he thinks he’ll be much less controversial. By Jim Cantiello Adam Lambert Photo: MTV News Adam Lambert has a top-40 hit with “Whataya Want From Me” and a #1 music video on VH1. His major-label debut, For Your Entertainment , just went gold. So what’s next for the “American Idol” fave? Two words: world domination. “I’m gonna go to Australia first, then Japan, then the U.K., then Germany,” Lambert told MTV News moments before Ryan Seacrest’s “Rock My Town” concert last Friday. “I’m really excited to travel. I think that’s one of the best parts of this whole gig. We get to meet new people and see new cultures.” For Your Entertainment is already available in Australia, and it is set to hit Japanese stores in March. European record shops, meanwhile, won’t get its glittery goodness until April. Regardless of where his international promo tour takes him, Lambert is confident his glam-pop will translate to audiences all over the globe. “I think a lot of the songs kind of have a little dash of that Euro flair in there,” said Lambert, who is headlining his first show Stateside at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California, on February 27. “And I think the Japanese kids will like the clothes.” The controversial pop-rocker is especially excited for his trips to the U.K. and Germany — where, he joked, there are “no boundaries.” “I think the European audiences are generally a little more liberal,” he said. “I’m sure there are certain things that I do that won’t upset people as much as they do here.” “Idol” champ Kris Allen, who appeared alongside Lambert and Allison Iraheta on Friday, had a personal request for Adam’s time abroad. “You should totally do a duet with La Roux ,” Allen suggested. “She is sick!” Adam eagerly replied, “That’d be cool. She’s great!” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. Kris Allen, Adam Lambert And Allison Iraheta Reunite Onstage In NYC

After individual sets, the ‘American Idol’ trifecta come together for a cover of Gnarls Barkley’s ‘Crazy.’ By Jim Cantiello Adam Lambert, Allison Iraheta and Kris Allen (file) Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — The “American Idol” stars aligned Friday night (February 12), as Allison Iraheta, Adam Lambert and Kris Allen took the stage for an exclusive live event. Ryan Seacrest’s “Rock My Town” concert brought out hundreds of lucky ticket winners, all of whom braved the cold for hours to make sure they got the best possible spot in the intimate Highline Ballroom. Performing in the order in which they were eliminated during the eighth season of “Idol,” fiery-haired Allison Iraheta rocked out first in a dizzying set that showed off her raspy pipes and her criminally overlooked pop/rock songs. Iraheta — in two punky pigtails and a black-and-white rocker-chic dress — and her enthusiastic four-piece band ripped through fan favorites like “Holiday,” single “Friday I’ll Be Over U,” show-opener “Don’t Waste the Pretty” and “Robot Love” with plucky aplomb. (The latter song even featured Iraheta busting out a quick robot dance move, much to the delight of the audience, made up of teenagers, their parents and a host of baby boomers with glitter face-paint, presumably there for Mr. Lambert.) Iraheta’s set hit a few bumpy patches — including some technical hiccups with a bum mic — but she made up for it with her rough-around-the-edges, self-deprecating charm. After flubbing a few lines in the title track of her album, “Just Like You,” she offered a silly mea culpa to the adoring crowd. “I’m sorry for being an idiot. Let’s see if I can get this next one right.” (She did. “Trouble Is,” an achingly tender ballad, was a set highlight.) Later, on another ballad, “Scars,” Iraheta stopped her band when she realized she began in the wrong key. During take two, Allison changed the lyrics to “Don’t turn away, I won’t go off key this time.” All was forgiven by her set closer, a stompy fuzz-rock cover of Roberta Flack’s “Killing Me Softly” that was so strong, it’s easy to imagine Iraheta making it to last year’s finale had she had the chance to sing it on “Idol.” It’s a shame Allison’s self-confidence was on the fritz as she exited. “Sorry about sucking tonight,” she sighed. (For the record, she did not suck.) Self-confidence wasn’t a problem for Adam Lambert , who sported more glam and glitter in his hair than all of Las Vegas combined. During the explosive 11-song set, he owned the stage with his blend of raw sexuality, campy theatrics and, most importantly, vocal agility. Lambert effortlessly glided through octave-jumping, voice-testing songs like “Music Again,” “Strut” and the heart-stopping ballad “Soaked,” originally a Muse demo. Adam easily whipped the crowd into a frenzy with his Mick Jagger-meets-Alice Cooper-meets-Elvis Presley presence, but Lambert quickly stopped his set as soon as he noticed a fan in front had passed out from all the excitement. Once the situation had been resolved and the sick woman got some water, Adam suggested she take a seat away from the stage. “You can rock out from back there,” he politely suggested, before busting out “Sure Fire Winners,” which appropriately features the line “Give ’em something to pass out about.” Any “Idol” fans who expected Lambert to put out an album of hard-rock songs should start saving their cash for when Adam goes on tour later this year. Songs like “If I Had You,” “For Your Entertainment” and the Lady Gaga-penned “Fever,” which each have a dance/pop vibe on his RCA/ 19 Recordings debut, were given a rough, badass makeover thanks to his backing band. Lambert and his crew were just as effective on quieter tunes too. Current single “Whataya Want From Me” and the Ryan Tedder collaboration “Sleepwalker” were both high points for the passionate singer. But it was the one-two punch of his last two songs that really kicked the set to new heights. First, Lambert busted out the rare bonus track “Down the Rabbit Hole,” and even though not everyone knew the song, Adam had the entire crowd in the palm of his spiky-gloved hands thanks to his electrifying performance, complete with knee-falling, ear-monitor tossing and plenty of cozying up to his bassist, TommyJoe Ratliff (who your parents probably remember as the dude Lambert kissed on the American Music Awards ). “I got a little carried away,” he meekly said. Lambert then busted out his iconic cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love,” and the crowd erupted. It was a genius set-ender. Not only did it allow for his talented band to get some arena-ready rock solos, but the risqu
