Uganda Anti-Gay Bill Stalls In Committee

The anti-gay legislation investigated in Vanguard's “Missionaries of Hate” is stalled in committee and, according to local gay activists in the country, unlikely to pass during this current parliamentary session. Correspondent Mariana van Zeller said she was taken aback by the fervor surrounding the anti-gay movement, especially at one of Pastor Ssempa’s inflammatory church rallies. “One of the shocking experiences that we had [in Uganda] was being in this congregation, with children, old women, and there he was with his laptop, showing these very graphic images of gay porn,” Mariana said. [Watch more commentary with Mariana.] “You could see the faces of the congregation. They were completely shocked. And this is what they are taking home with them.” Although religious leaders and politicians had managed to elevate the discourse to fever pitch earlier this year, local activists report that the general population of Uganda is more tolerant, and the government seems to be responding to international pressures that the bill be withdrawn from parliament. From the Global Post: “Politicians find that homosexuals are a great scapegoat or red herring to divert attention to more pressing issues … such as unemployment, corruption, poor health facilities, reform of electoral laws and so forth,” wrote Ugandan lawyer Sylvia Tamale, the first female dean of law at Makerere University law school. “If we are to be absolutely honest with ourselves, we should ask whether there are not more pressing issues of moral violation in other areas such as domestic violence, torture and corruption. None of these areas have specific laws outlawing their practice,” wrote Tamale. Rev. Mark Kiyimba of the Ugandan Unitarian Universalist Church, also known as “Pastor Brown,” is a leader in Uganda’s LGBT community. He says that international pressure, especially from the Obama administration, has “cooled down progress on the bill.” “We have shifted our focus and are now concentrating on HIV, spirituality and social issues,” said Kiyimba. “We don’t hear anything anymore about the bill. Besides, parliament will dissolve next month, so it is too late to debate the bill before the close of parliament.” Watch a clip from “Missionaries of Hate” in which Mariana and a

Jesse Jackson: Cavaliers Owner Sees LeBron as Runaway Slave

Jason Whitlock writes about the sports world from every angle, including those other writers can't imagine or muster courage to address. His columns are humorous, thought-provoking, agenda free, honest and unpredictable. You can e-mail Jason or follow him on Twitter. PRINT RSS Updated Jul 12, 2010 12:39 PM ET I could pretend Jesse Jackson speaks for such a tiny minority that his inflammatory, predictable and misguided remarks about LeBron James and Dan Gilbert are unworthy of rebuke. But then, I’d have to ignore the mountain of e-mails that poured into my laptop from African-American brothers and sisters making the same argument. Jesse has a constituency, a passionate group of idiots who believe the best way to combat white-wing political bigots such as Limbaugh and Hannity is with black-wing political bigotry. And so, in defense of LeBron’s narcissistic ego explosion and Gilbert’s emotional reaction to it, Jesse compared Gilbert to an 18th-century slave owner. “His feelings of betrayal personify a slave master mentality,” Jackson said in a statement released Sunday. “(Gilbert) sees LeBron as a runaway slave.” Yes, this is an attention grab by Rev. Jackson. He heard about ESPN’s impressive ratings for “The Decision” and, like a mafia don, wants to wet his beak. Why let Jim Gray and ESPN executives have all the fun exploiting LeBron’s naivete? There’s enough of LeBron’s carcass for Jesse to feast, too. And Gilbert’s childish letter to Cavaliers fans in the wake of LeBron’s departure gave Jackson the opening he needed to break out his knives and forks. “(Gilbert’s) accusations endanger LeBron,” Jackson wrote. “His jersey is being burned in effigy, and he is being projected as a betrayer by the owner. … LeBron is not a child, nor is he bound to play on Gilbert’s plantation and be demeaned.” added by: congoboy

Rick Ross Video Director Spiff TV Branches Out

Ross has been ‘getting me a lot of gigs,’ Spiff tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Spiff and Rick Ross Photo: Spiff TV Fire Starter: Spiff TV Carlos Suarez has an ear for the streets and an eye for the Internet. Better known to everyone on the hip-hop blogs as Rick Ross’ directorial go-to guy, Spiff TV, the 26-year-old has made a name for himself with his vivid visuals for artists such as the Bawse and Waka Flocka Flame. What the world might not know yet: It was Spiff’s keen audio scouting that unearthed the beats for two of Ricky Rozay’s hottest records right now. ” ‘MC Hammer,’ I did two verses,” Ross explained to us a couple of weeks ago. “One night, we was riding around the city, and Spiff played me the beat. I just start writing to it, and Spiff took his BlackBerry and started writing down the rhymes. I actually wrote the two verses and the chorus riding around in the whip.” “I’m a director/A&R,” said Spiff, who also manages producer Lex Luger (Ross’ “MC Hammer” and “Blowin’ Money Fast [B.M.F.]” and Waka’s “Hard in the Paint”). “If you check that Albert Anastasia album , it’s ‘A&R by Spiff TV.’ I got him [the beat for] ‘B.M.F.,’ and I got him ‘MC Hammer.’ I actually gave him ‘MC Hammer’ when we left the ‘Super High’ video shoot . Like 2 in the morning. I had the laptop opened up, playing the beat. He just started freestyling. I said, ‘Hold up.’ I whipped the BlackBerry out and started writing down everything he was saying. The next week, he calls me like, ‘Spiff, e-mail me.’ Sent him the lyrics. Hit! Same thing with ‘B.M.F.’ ” Spiff is directing the upcoming videos from Albert Anastasia for “MC Hammer” and “Sweet Life” with John Legend. A couple of weeks ago, he helmed a teaser for “B.M.F.” Spiff directed all the freestyle videos Ross has done the past couple of years, as well as videos from Deeper Than Rap, such as “Mafia Music” and “Valley of Death.” The Orlando native has caught the attention of other MCs as well; he directed Waka Flocka’s “O Let’s Do It” remix video as well. “I’m from Orlando,” Spiff began to tell of how he hooked up with the leader of the Carol City Cartel. “I used to work as A&R for DJ Nasty. Nasty Beat Makers from Orlando. That’s [DJ] Khaled’s people and brother. So [Ross] put me on a couple of years ago. We just been building. Right now, we working. A lot of stuff going on. Ross manages me as a video director. He’s been doing a lot for me as far as networking, getting me a lot of gigs.” Spiff’s biggest goal right now is to start directing films. He says getting the opportunity to shadow director F. Gary Gray on the set of the “Super High” video was an invaluable experience. “I got to watch him shoot a video. It was amazing. He shoots videos like they’re movies. He’s picking two movies coming up. He doesn’t know which one. But either one he picks, I’m flying to where it is, and I’m going to be his water boy that day and watch everything he does.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines or follow the Mixtape Daily team on Twitter: @shaheemreid and @mongosladenyc .

ABC Reporter Hassled on Gulf Coast Beach While Covering Oil Spill

In today’s “Silence of the Cams” segment, an ABC reporter was hassled Thursday for trying to cover the Gulf Coast oil spill from an Alabama beach. According to an article published at ABCNews.com, “Reporting is often about access, but journalists along the Gulf Coast covering the BP oil spill have had some trouble getting it.” The piece continued, “As BP faces more pressure from the government and from its own shareholders unhappy with the company’s falling stock price, it seems to be clamping down on who can talk to reporters” (video follows with more quotes from the article and commentary): Despite company statements that anyone on cleanup crews can share their views, ABC’s Matt Gutman reports that’s not necessarily the case. Today during a “World News” Conversation, he saw firsthand how a BP manager took pains to keep workers away from the press. While preparing for a video chat on his laptop from a public beach in Alabama, Gutman was hassled by the manager of a nearby crew, asking Gutman why he was on the beach. In reality, BP officials likely have learned how to avoid media access by watching the Obama administration handle the press since Inauguration Day. In the end, there are consequences when journalists abdicate their responsibility to advance a political agenda. Maybe if they wouldn’t have assisted candidate Obama’s rise to the White House and then basically reported anything his administration wanted in the opening months of his presidency they wouldn’t be treated with such disregard by a British company. On the other hand, one has to wonder whether or not the White House minds what BP is doing. Think about it: if the Administration wanted greater press access to the beaches and the cleanup, it could just DEMAND BP allow it. After all, these ARE American beaches — or so I’ve been told.

MTV Movie Awards Set Designer Gives A Sneak Peek

‘We’ve got gold hubcaps spinning, crazy popcorn, butter — it’s a mess,’ Anton Goss says. By Kara Warner 2010 MTV Movie Awards set Photo: MTV News While the MTV Movie Awards show itself is always packed with surprises from attendees, presenters and winners, one of the unsung, slightly under-the-radar heroes is the show’s flashy, highly technologically enhanced stage design. Will there be showers of golden popcorn? Hidden trapdoors or elevators? Performers flying from the ceiling? MTV’s Jim Cantiello recently caught up with production designer Anton Goss to get a sneak peek at his fancy set designing computer, where he showed off a few of the “looks” that will gild the Gibson Ampitheather in classic MTV gold come Sunday. “We have three main looks,” Goss offered. “We have a ‘TV look,’ we have a ‘film-reel look’ [and] I call this one my ‘pimp my ride look,’ ” he described while loading the different graphics and stage layouts on his laptop. “We’ve got gold hubcaps spinning, crazy popcorn, butter — it’s a mess.” “The ‘secret look’ is the one we’re most proud of,” Goss said with a conspiratory grin, and then offered only a vague description: “We had a lot of fun with that. … It’s shocking.” This is Goss’ second turn as production designer for the MTV Movie Awards stages. He’s a seasoned pro where TV set decor is concerned, having designed episodes of “The Bachelor,” “Last Comic Standing,” the 2010 People’s Choice Awards and the Spike Video Game Awards; he’s also made the rounds in the daytime talk-show circuit, having designed for “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” the latter for which he won a Daytime Emmy in 2009. Don’t miss the live red-carpet coverage, exclusive movie clips and fist-pumping action on MTV News’ “Jersey Shore Blow-Out at the MTV Movie Awards,” airing live from Los Angeles this Sunday, June 6, at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
