Has Technology Made Us More Awkward?

Excerpt from:

Yesterday, as I was walking back from the train station after a long day at work, I ran into someone I knew on the way home. After we exchanged greetings and we proceeded to chat, it quickly became hard to hold a conversation as we both seemed lost in our own worlds. We had both not been expecting this chance meeting and were tired from work, but I later realized that there was more to that encounter than just lethargy from the end of the day. I had spent most of the train ride on my phone surfing the internet and reading a book, which are both very solitary activities. The bulk of my job requires me to be on my laptop, so obviously I have become very accustomed over the years to communicating online. I even find myself making lunch plans through e-mail, even though the person I’m messaging is in the same side of the building. Ordinary face-to-face contact has become an alternate reality to sites such as Facebook and Twitter, where you can post your day-to-day thoughts and send messages instantly from person to person. You don’t even have to open your mouth or leave your chair anymore to be able to ask people questions or find out about their daily life. The addition of the internet onto cell phones has also become a gateway to instant gratification and can sometimes even spawn new friendships if you are too shy to speak to someone on a more personal level. However, if you really think about it, what is technology doing to the fundamental social skills that people have to learn and cultivate? If you can’t talk to someone in person and you resort to e-mailing or Facebook-ing them, is that really the start to a healthy relationship? While there are definitely some advantages to the technology that have made communication easier in the long run, there are still some drawbacks in the way people relate to each other with this changing technology. Is Social Networking Bad For Your Child? Thinking back to even ten years ago, cell phones were less advanced and social networks were not the ultimate gathering place. E-mail was still important and frequently used, but you couldn’t access it as easily as you can with today’s rash of Smart-phones. The latter has actually become something of interest to me as of late, as I just recently invested in an iPhone. Being able to access your Facebook account or e-mail on the run can be a blessing and a curse, as having so much connectivity can be helpful, as well as distracting. While it might be great to be able to look up street directions or a song that you heard on the radio, sometimes the urge to check one’s phone for new messages can end up replacing human-to-human interaction. Despite the new distractions, I was recently discussing the merits of cell phones and computers with a friend at lunch today and we were both in awe of how we survived without them for so long. Mailing letters and stopping by at people’s houses unannounced seems foreign to us in this day and age, since the fast-paced world has made people accessible at an instant. Ways of communicating are constantly changing, yet this new evolution has left the younger generation less likely to engage in true face-to-face conversation. According to the New York Times , college students have even started using text messages as a way of resolving roommate conflicts, despite the fact that they could be discussing it right in their own room! Have text messages become the new voice, making us strangers of interpersonal connection? It’s important to take yourself away from your technology once in a while, putting away your phone and simply sitting down for coffee with a friend without distractions. Basic communication skills like eye contact and a listening ear are vital in forming bonds with other people and something we should continue to cultivate, despite the changing times with new media replacing what was once commonplace interaction. When you “unplug” yourself from the web of technology, even if for a short amount of time, there is much to be learned from simply talking to others and keeping the human aspect of communication alive. Never forget the foundation of human interaction, which involves the bare bones of creating a relationship with the other person. It is very hard to find connections through simple text, as the words have to have some emotion that only the human voice, facial expressions, and general presence can provide. By breaking the barriers that technology has built around us, using our face-to-face times as serious communication can help bring us out of our awkward funk and back into a world where machines don’t dominate our social lives! Justin Bieber – the girls, the Google hits… and THAT hairstyle

THE internet propelled Justin Bieber to megastardom and made him the world’s biggest teen – worth £100million at just 16. Women love him and female celebrities flock to him…but now his extraordinary success is turning him from heart-throb to heartbreaker. Despite fans’ hate campaign against it, he is currently stepping out with Disney beauty Selena Gomez. But at the star-studded London premiere of his new film Never Say Never last week she was nowhere to be seen, preferring to stay at home in the US. Now worried friends fear she’s heading for heartache. Linked to a string of beauties and with the film of his life so far breaking box office records, Justin Bieber is the most Googled name on the planet. Not bad for a boy whose voice hasn’t fully broken. But the real secret of his success is his appeal to the opposite sex. Thousands of hysterical girls camped outside the O2 last week as he arrived at the Brits to pick up his award for International Breakthrough Artist. Inside, glamorous older stars such as Cheryl Cole, Jessie J and Rihanna queued up to steal a kiss from the teen sensation. But while millions around the globe adore him, one woman has captured his heart – Disney star Selena Gomez, who at 18 is two years his senior. And although things are serious between them, she should not take anything for granted – Justin may be only 16 but he already has a roving eye. Friends have warned: “Justin’s cute and he knows it. He could have any woman he chooses and is lapping up the attention. Selena better watch out.” Even the man himself admits: “I’m here just having fun and not taking myself too seriously. I like all girls. I like a girl with a nice smile and who’s funny. “As far as looks, my taste is dark hair. But I don’t limit myself. I like girls with blonde hair too. I like everything.” As Justin goes from one awards ceremony to another, pretty brunette Selena is no doubt watching with an anxious eye. Their romance – the worst-kept secret in showbiz – was established beyond doubt when they were spotted strolling hand in hand in Santa Monica then enjoying an intimate break in St Lucia last month. Advertisement – article continues below » Justin, wearing just a pair of shorts, was snapped tenderly kissing a bikini-clad Selena and patting her on the bottom. During a recent interview, the singer opened his laptop to reveal his screensaver – a romantic sunset shot of them together. And last week for Valentine’s he was spotted in lingerie store Victoria’s Secret, where he spent thousands of pounds.Justin has been reluctant to confirm the romance, saying: “I don’t think it’s really anyone’s business what my private life is. Some things you just have to keep to yourself.” But he did reveal: “I don’t think you should have sex with anyone unless you love them.” Selena also denied that they were dating. “Oh my gosh. Justin is one of my best friends,” she claimed. “That’s all it is. All innocent.” Justin did, though, give away a few clues as to what is really going on: “There are so many girls who would just do anything for me because of my status. Someone told me it’s great to be with somebody who has just as much to lose as you do. It’s probably a good idea if I go out with someone famous.” It looks like Selena is that special person. A huge star in her own right, she also has the squeaky-clean Disney brand to support. But while she was a supporter of the True Love Waits chastity campaign, it’s perhaps significant that she no longer wears her purity ring – a symbol of a no-sex-before-marriage pledge. One reason to keep the relationship under wraps is the wrath of Justin’s teenage fans – the Beliebers. “I hate u, i want you to die,” tweeted one young fan to Selena on finding out about the romance. Another added: “I’ll kill you I swear on GOD!!!!”, “If you are the Girlfriend of Justin I will Kill you I HATE YOU :@ !!!” and the vile slur: “Stay away from Justin, I’ll kill you!” Justin’s manager Scooter Braun is also keen that his young star is seen as single, saying: “This kid travels a lot and I always told him, ‘You shouldn’t be in a relationship unless you can give someone everything’.” But while Justin is smitten with Selena and is said to be buying a multi-million-pound apartment in LA so he can be near her, for such a young man he already has quite a track record as a heart-breaker. The first girl linked to him was fellow singer Jacqueline Rae Pyles, who has since been dumped by his record label. Then there was first love Jasmine Villegas, also a singer, who was cast aside to make way for Gomez. He is also close to reality star Kim Kardashian, who at 30 is 14 years his senior. After one meeting, Justin posted a picture on Twitter and wrote: “Look it’s my girlfriend Kim Kardashian.” During a magazine photo shoot on a Bahamas beach, Kim tweeted: “I messed up Justin Bieber’s hair.” Ah, the hair… that tousled moptop is becoming almost as famous as the man himself. The style, known simply as The Bieber, is side-sweeping America, swiftly becoming the must-have style for teenage boys. Salons charge up to £80 for the helmet-like cut with long, side-brushed fringe. Some boys are too embarrassed to ask for it by name, so they describe the combed-over do with no mention of Justin. No doubt boys copying the style are hoping it will give them some of the star’s legendary appeal to girls – which is growing as quickly as his sales figures. And as his film Never Say Never smashes all box office records and his fortune gets ever vaster, it seems unlikely Justin will be able to stay a one-woman boy for long. ‘World of Jenks’ Star Recalls Fighting, Making Up With Maino

‘Literally after that fight, we were cracking up,’ Andrew Jenks says of tense moment with the rapper. By Nuzhat Naoreen “World of Jenks” star Andrew Jenks Photo: MTV News There aren’t too many people who can boast about getting to live a day in the life of a rap star … or, for that matter, getting attacked by one. In the debut episode of his new show, ” World of Jenks ,” which aired right after the 2010 Video Music Awards on Sunday, star Andrew Jenks got to experience both. In the premiere of the documentary-style series, . He moves in with him, parties with him and even meets his son. Everything goes smoothly, until a night out when Jenks starts questioning Maino about some of his life choices. Maino doesn’t take too kindly to the questions, and things quickly get heated. Jenks talked to MTV News about why he thinks Maino attacked him and how the two got over the fight. “When I was spending time with Maino and before I had really gotten to know him, really understood his entire story, I was starting to judge him unfairly, thinking that maybe he wasn’t being the best example he could be to a lot of the youth that looked up to him,” said Jenks. “I think he got really offended by that because I didn’t know where he came from. I didn’t know the struggle of his life and I didn’t know why he acted the way that he did.” Jenks said the confrontation was beneficial, in that it led him to realize that there was a lot more about Maino’s life he needed to experience. But that doesn’t mean it didn’t hurt. “He’s big,” Jenks said. “People don’t realize Maino is a big guy, so it hurt. If you look after he choked me a little bit, you see my neck is really red because he is a forceful man.” Even though it was a rough moment, the two soon made up. “I developed enough of a relationship with him at that point where I knew it was a scuffle, it was late at night and that we would get over it,” he explained. In fact, the two ended up partying together for the rest of the night. “Literally after that fight, we were cracking up. We hung out that night [and] it was just like, it was a heated moment and we both came to an agreement that I needed to see where he was from and we carried on with the night,” said Jenks, adding that no apologies were necessary. “You know, it was kind of like we’re two dudes; we don’t need to talk about it. We already decided I’m going to go see where you’re from and that will be the best way to reconcile what just happened.” Jenks also shared that Maino caught the program before it aired and loved it. “I showed him the episode a few days ago, and we were at a restaurant. It was funny because it was this really quiet restaurant, and it was, like, very nice. Everyone was quietly eating their dinner. And he was like, ‘Yo, can I see the episode?’ And I had my laptop, so I took it out, and he put on headphones and he was watching it and he was just like, ‘Ohh! Oh, wow!’ He was just yelling in the middle of this restaurant going, ‘Ah sh–, Jenks, that was crazy,’ like, ‘I can’t believe you got that.’ ” The reaction was just what Jenks was looking for. “At the end [Maino] was like, ‘That was me, that’s my life, you got it in 20 minutes.’ That was just a weight off my shoulders, because I felt like we really accomplished something and that the guy we were following said, ‘You got it, man. That’s my life right there. You depicted it.’ ” ” World of Jenks ” airs Mondays at 10 p.m. ET on MTV.
