Lauren Alaina selected Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb” on American Idol because “it’s about a young girl struggling to reach her dreams.” Will Lauren reach hers? The inspirational hit song’s top notes are slightly outside the best part of this aspiring singer’s range, but she does a commendable job of it live, overall. The judges liked it and so, we’re guessing, will voters. In fact, before she even got out there, Jimmy Iovine called her a “much better singer” than Miles. Do you agree? Bodog now has Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina as the favorites to win season 10. By James Montgomery The “American Idol” top 8 Photo: Michael Becker / FOX Pia Toscano’s early exit from “American Idol” has shocked experts , celebs and fans . And, as it turns out, it was also a shock to a group of folks who don’t get shocked all that often: oddsmakers. It seems that, in the wake of Toscano’s elimination, the brain trust at Bodog’s sportsbook has been forced to rejigger their odds. For weeks, they slowly moved her up the list of likely “Idol” winners — she originally opened as a 14/1 long shot , but heading into Wednesday night’s show, she was a 2/1 favorite to take home the crown — and now that she’s out, they’ve anointed Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina as the new co-favorites. Bodog gives both singers 5/2 odds at winning “Idol,” followed by James Durbin at 4/1. Haley Reinhart gets 15/2 odds, Casey Abrams gets 8/1 and Paul McDonald is in at 12/1. Jacob Lusk and Stefano Langone bring up the rear, getting 14/1 and 20/1 odds, respectively. And though they were forced to re-shuffle, the folks at Bodog have let the initial shock of Toscano’s departure wear off. Because, as they put it, no matter how hard anyone tries, it’s often impossible to make sense of the whims of “Idol” voters. “From the beginning of the season, Pia Toscano had been a popular bet who … was a clear favorite to win it all,” Bodog sportsbook manager Richard Gardner said. “It may be a shock that she was sent home, but with all the contestants putting on a solid performance the other night and the track record that this show has for voting the wrong people through, I am not surprised at all.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. Did you believe in Thia Megia last night? The young American Idol hopeful dedicated her rendition of “Daniel” to her brother and was told by Jimmy Iovine that “if they believe it, you get to the following week. If they don’t, I don’t believe you do.” So the challenge was laid out, and Megia didn’t falter in the face of it. But she also performed yet another ballad, the third of the evening, and one that couldn’t compete with those of Lauren Alaina and Pia Toscano . Might Thia be in trouble? Randy said she may have played it too safe. We’ll find out tonight. Thia Megia – Daniel

Lauren Alaina was among the American Idol finalists who performed with the flu last night. But the resulting, smokey sound may have actually helped this 16-year old with her rendition of Melissa Etheridge’s “I’m the Only One.” Thanks to a confident stage presence and a well-trained voice, Alaina earned a wild ovation from the crowd, along with the label of a “shining star” from Steven Tyler. Said Jennifer Lopez, simply and accurately: “That’s staying true to the melody and framework of the song but still giving it your own flavor. Very good job.” Lauren Alaina – I’m the Only One
Young Money diva calls latest clip ‘playful’ and ‘sexy.’ By D.L. Chandler, with reporting by Audrey Kim Nicki Minaj on the set of “Super Bass” Photo: MTV News While Nicki Minaj is supposedly on a recording hiatus, that isn’t stopping the chart-topping rap diva from creating steamy visuals for a track featured on the deluxe edition of her platinum-selling debut, Pink Friday. MTV News caught up with the fashion-forward diva on the set of her new video for “Super Bass.” Dazzling in a skintight pink bodysuit emblazoned with giraffe prints, Nicki completed the look with a half-blond and half-pink wig, gold eye shadow and bright pink lipstick matching the outfit. Nicki revealed the theme behind the song during a break in shooting. ” ‘Super Bass’ is about the boy that you are crushing over,” Nicki said. “And you kind of want to get your mack on, but you’re taking the playful approach.” Gyrating atop a crystal-clear motorcycle, Nicki is clearly upping the sex appeal. The Young Money diva explained the focus behind the video: “I just wanted to do something real colorful and cutesy. This is an icy world, it’s a sexy world, it’s a playful world. Of course I have lots of eye candy for my girls and my boys,” she teased. The teasing doesn’t stop there. “We have a lot of little surprises in store for this particular video,” Nicki promised. “I would like to put out 50 videos. The videos really tell the story a lot more elaborately than just the song does.” Nicki also talked about her smash hit “Moment 4 Life” and its incredible staying power. “It’s been #1 on the rap Billboard charts and then it’s been #1 on the R&B and hip-hop charts,” marveled the 26-year-old starlet. Pink Friday continues to break records as well, with the album achieving a milestone of the most consecutive weeks in the top 10 by a female rapper. The hip-hop beauty summed up neatly her approach to the video in a few brief words. “I felt like ‘Moment 4 Life’ was like letting my hair down, but ‘Super Bass’ is letting it all hang out,” Nicki said with a playful chuckle.
