Lauryn Hill Faces Federal Tax Charges

Former Fugees singer could face up to three years in prison if found guilty for failing to file income-tax returns. By Rob Markman Lauryn Hill Photo: David Wolff-Patrick/ Redferns/ Getty Images Fourteen years after she released her classic album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, the IRS is teaching the former Fugees singer a lesson on the importance of filing her taxes. Lauryn Hill was charged Thursday (June 7) with failing to file three years of income-tax returns, and now the government is looking to settle the score. A press release issued to MTV News states that Hill, who owns four different corporations, makes most of her money from music and film royalties. In the three years in which Hill failed to file, the IRS estimates that she’s earned more than $1.6 million in income. If found guilty, she could face up to three years in prison and a $300,000 fine. The news comes just days after Hill performed in her native New Jersey at Hot 97’s annual Summer Jam concert, surprising concertgoers with a short but impactful performance. She was a special guest during Nas’ set and performed the Fugees’ “Ready or Not,” her own “Lost Ones” and “If I Ruled the World” with the Queensbridge rap legend. Hill was originally scheduled to come out as a guest during Nicki MInaj’s set, but after a Hot 97 DJ insulted the Young Money queen, Lil Wayne insisted that none of his artists perform at the concert. While Hill admitted that she was unaware of the specifics, she issued a statement in support of Minaj . “I don’t have details on exactly what transpired between the station and the artists, but I do support artists standing by their beliefs and walking with integrity,” she wrote. “We have to find a better way to commercially exploit music while giving artists their proper respect. This cannot be done while taking their contributions for granted or trying to control the scope of their growth and power through threats and fear tactics.” Hill is scheduled to appear in court on June 29. Kanye West Signs Teyana Taylor To G.O.O.D. Music

The 21-year-old Harlem rapper and singer is officially added to the roster at West’s Def Jam imprint. By Nadeska Alexis Teyana Taylor Photo: Amanda Edwards/Getty Images Well, this was a long time coming. Kanye West has been closely affiliated with Harlem rapper/singer Teyana Taylor for some time now, but this week it was confirmed that Taylor has officially been signed to ‘Ye’s G.O.O.D. Music label. The 21-year-old singer-songwriter and actress, who worked with West on his fifth album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, will reveal details about her first G.O.O.D. Music LP and forthcoming singles in the next few weeks. In April she debuted a new mixtape, The Misunderstanding of Teyana Taylor, which pays tribute to Lauryn Hill and her other early influences, including Mary J. Blige and Janet Jackson. Taylor got her start in the industry when she was signed to Pharrell William’s Star Trak record label at the age of 15, and some fans might remember her over-the-top episode of MTV’s “My Super Sweet 16.” Her debut album, 2008’s From a Planet Called Harlem, featured the breakout single “Google Me,” and Taylor has since earned plenty of co-writing credits on recent songs like Nicki Minaj’s “Right By My Side,” which appeared on Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. Taylor worked closely with West on MBDTF ‘s “Hell of a Life,” “Runaway,” “Dark Fantasy” and the collaboration track “Christmas in Harlem,” which also featured G.O.O.D. Music’s CyHi the Prynce. Her recent onscreen endeavors include roles in 2010’s “Stomp the Yard 2” and Tyler Perry’s 2011 film “Madea’s Big Happy Family.” Last summer, the 21-year-old also grabbed attention with her remix of Drake’s hit single “Marvin’s Room.” “Her Room” found Taylor sampling lyrics from Lauryn Hill’s “X Factor,” as she came to terms with a cheating ex. The G.O.O.D. news just keeps coming from Kanye West’s camp. Last month the super producer/rapper signed veteran Q-Tip to his Def Jam imprint. What do you think of Kanye of signing Teyana to G.O.O.D. Top 10 Lauryn Hill Songs Lauryn Hill Has Butchered [ORIGINAL]

Here is the original post:

If you go see Lauryn Hill in concert hoping to hear her greatest hits, you may be disappointed, because most of them sound NOTHING like the original. At this year’s New York stop of Rock The Bells, Lauryn acknowledged the criticism and said, “You always hear people saying things like, ‘she does the old music but she doesn’t do it the old way.” So why does she do it? ”When I get onstage and I’m in front of you, my heartbeats go faster,” Lauryn explained. “So sometimes we’ve got to bring these tempos up so I can move a little faster.” Performing a song hundreds of time can get redundant for an artist, and part of the live experience of seeing an artist in concert is getting a modified version of the music. But most of Lauryn Hills songs are borderline unrecognizable in concert. Here are 10 Lauryn Hill songs butchered by Lauryn Hill, and let us know what you think in the comments section at the bottom of this page. Pass. “When It Hurts So Bad” Again, Lauryn takes a beautiful song, gives it a soundtrack fit for a lounge, and makes it feel cheesy.
