‘Eclipse’ Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know

If you’re not already in line to see the latest ‘Twilight Saga’ installment, check out these fun facts! By Eric Ditzian Taylor Lautner, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in “Eclipse” Photo: Summit Entertainment It’s been 222 days since the November 20 release of “New Moon.” Over 5,300 hours. Some 319,000 minutes. Not that you’ve been counting or anything. Now here comes “Eclipse” on Wednesday (June 30) to sate your vampire thirst. What’s happened in the time since the “Twilight” franchise has been absent from the multiplex? That’s a question we’re here to answer with a jam-packed edition of MTV News’ cheat sheet. We’ve pulled together almost everything — every interview, video clip, photo and news update — that we have to offer on this third installment in the series. Read on, and trust us when we say that, afterward, you’ll know everything there is to know about what it took to bring “Eclipse” to the big screen. The Solar System Aligns The movie history of “Eclipse” goes back to November 2008 — before “Twilight” even opened — when Summit Entertainment optioned the movie rights to “New Moon,” “Eclipse” and “Breaking Dawn.” Studio execs probably felt pretty smart when, one week later, “Twilight” opened to $69.6 million in box-office receipts. The phenomenon was under way, and soon, “Eclipse” had a release date . What it didn’t yet have was a director. Rumored names included Drew Barrymore and Juan Antonio Bayona , but the job ultimately went to “30 Days of Night” helmer David Slade . By spring 2009, casting for new roles was under way and the shoot schedule had been revealed, with photography slated to run from August 17 through October 31. By August, of course, the newcomers had signed on: Xavier Samuel as the vampire Riley; Jodelle Ferland as the vampire Bree; Jack Huston as a Depression-era playboy named Royce King; Catalina Sandino Moreno as the vampire Maria; Julia Jones as Leah Clearwater; Tinsel Korey as Emily; and BooBoo Stewart as Seth Clearwater. But the biggest casting move came in July, when Bryce Dallas Howard controversially replaced Rachelle Lefevre in the role of Victoria. The Stars Give Us Sneak Peeks As the start of production neared, we began to hear the cast dish dirt on the upcoming film. Taylor Lautner revealed his excitement about working with Slade. Jackson Rathbone and Kellan Lutz spoke about their intense preparation for some fight sequences. And Kristen Stewart got excited about the movie’s proposal scene, one of her favorite “Eclipse” scenes “Well, to decide you’re gonna marry someone at 18 is a pretty hefty decision,” she told MTV News. “And I didn’t want to look stupid. I didn’t want it to look like kids getting married. You know what I mean?” Gazing at “Eclipse” Filming had barely begun when we got our first look at the cast in action: Howard and Samuel locking lips . Slade also posted pictures on his Twitter account, including a stunning one of Lautner flipping through the air . The first official still arrived in October: Robert Pattinson and Stewart together in a field of wildflowers. Then in March, the first trailer hit the Web , giving us Pattinson and Stewart together in bed, Lautner without his shirt on and even some acrobatic vampire action. “It’s badass,” Lutz told MTV News about the footage. “The action really drew me in, and I think the guys are really going to like this movie.” A second trailer arrived the next month, courtesy of Oprah Winfrey’s show. If the first trailer was all about Edward, Bella and Jacob’s love triangle, then this one focused squarely on violent action. And in June, Stewart, Pattinson and Lautner took the stage at the MTV Movie Awards to present an exclusive clip from the film. More clips followed: Rosalie’s advice to Bella ; Edward’s warning to Jacob ; and the Volturi’s observation of the newborn vampire army. The Stars Welcome Us Back By the summer, the “Eclipse” stars were in full PR mode. We chatted with Elizabeth Reaser , Rathbone, Alex Meraz , Peter Facinelli and many more. We also sat down for extensive conversations with Pattinson , Stewart and Lautner . “It’s my favorite, because it’s the most guy-friendly by far,” Lautner said of “Eclipse.” “It’s dangerous. There’s a lot of action. The romance is still there, but the action level is stepped up way more. It’s great.” Last Wednesday marked the film’s glittering red-carpet premiere in Los Angeles, which MTV News streamed live . Stewart chatted about her “passion” for the franchise , and Pattinson likened the end of the series to “divorcing someone.” But just one premiere ain’t enough for the “Eclipse” kids. On Monday night, Stewart and Lautner stopped by a secret screening in New York, and, of course, MTV News was on hand to chat with the stars once again. After months of shooting and publicity rounds, with the film’s release just hours away, the talk turned to lighter topics. Stewart revealed that she’s actually an accomplished chef, while Lautner said you will never see him join up for a role in a big-screen musical. “No,” he laughed. “I mean, people actually tell me that I can [sing], but I think they’re just being nice — because I definitely can’t! Taylor Lautner Talks ‘Breaking Dawn’ Split, 3-D Possibility

By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Taylor Lautner Photo: Charley Gallay/ Getty Images Once “Eclipse” hits theaters at midnight, there will only be one book left in “The Twilight Saga” to mine for the big screen. But thanks to Summit Entertainment’s decision to split “Breaking Dawn” into two films, fans can look forward to two more installments of their beloved franchise. It’s a decision that was universally embraced not just by fans of the series, but by several of the films’ stars as well — like Taylor Lautner , for instance. “I definitely think it was the right thing to do, for the movie and for the book,” Lautner told MTV News of the “Breaking Dawn” split. “It’s hard enough to condense 500 pages into a script, but to condense 800 and everything that’s going on in ‘Breaking Dawn,’ it would have been impossible.” Lautner will spend his summer shooting the lead role in the action/thriller “Abduction,” but he returns to the role of hunky werewolf Jacob Black when the cameras roll on “Breaking Dawn” in the fall. Already a veteran of the “Twilight” franchise, Lautner confessed that there are elements of “Breaking Dawn” that have him a bit on edge. “It’s the part I’m most looking forward to and the part I’m most nervous about: Renesmee, the baby,” he said, referring to the vampire baby spawned by Edward and Bella. Upon Renesmee’s birth, Jacob finds himself inexplicably drawn to the baby, effectively ending his feud with Edward over Bella’s heart. “That should be very interesting to film. But I’m looking forward to it! I’ve got the direction of Bill Condon , so I’ll be fine.” Speaking of Condon, Lautner said he’s already met the recently appointed “Breaking Dawn” director. “I met him briefly, very quickly, but not about ‘Breaking Dawn.’ He seems like a very nice guy,” the actor said. “Obviously, he’s ridiculously talented, so I’m excited that I’m getting to work with him twice.” As the shoot date on “Breaking Dawn” draws ever nearer, there are fewer and fewer questions about the film left to answer. One question that lingers, however, is whether it will be released in 3-D. “Usually, 3-D is best when it takes you into another world,” he explained. “I could see it going both ways. As long as we have the story line down and as long as we bring what was written on the pages in the book to life, then we’ll be fine no matter what we do.” Would you like to see “Breaking Dawn” in 3-D? Taylor Lautner Wants A Regular Life For ‘As Long As Possible’

By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Lautner on the “Today” show on Monday Photo: NBC In a scene from “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” out this Wednesday, Robert Pattinson’s Edward Cullen makes one very funny observation about Taylor Lautner’s beefy werewolf alter ego, Jacob Black: “Doesn’t he own a shirt?” When Lautner stopped by the “Today” show on Monday (June 28), he reassured Matt Lauer that he does in fact own shirts in his real life. He laughed, “Of course, I do!” In his real life, when he’s not playing dreamy teen wolves or on his way to becoming the next big action hero, Lautner said he’s just like any other 18-year-old. “At home … I mean when I’m home, I help out with the lawn, the garbage, dishes,” he said, adding that he wants to be regular for “as long as possible.” “It’s very important to me,” he said. “I describe it as I live two lives. I also have the same exact life as before.” After being out making and promoting a movie, Lautner said, his family treats him “maybe even harsher. I got extra mowing to do.” Lautner had little more than 239 words in first flick, Lauer pointed out, and now he is one of the film’s biggest names. “I never thought it would be a reality; to look back then and be sitting here now is mind-blowing,” the actor said. While he loves “Eclipse,” claiming it to be his favorite of the “Twilight” flicks so far, he does admit to one frustration in the film. “I was very jealous of my [CGI] wolf,” he joked. “I love the action. That’s the fun part, and my wolf has all the action in this movie.” And though he hasn’t tired of his fame yet, Lautner is wary of being known only as a shirtless wonder. “As an actor, I do want to challenge myself, but I embrace this role, this franchise. I give all the thanks to it. I’m having the time of my life with it,” he told Lauer, joking that if anyone wants to see him shirtless they should see “Eclipse” and not harasses him on the street. “[Fans] ask you to take your shirt off a lot. By Eric Ditzian Taylor Lautner Photo: MTV News Taylor Lautner is looking to go from one shape-shifter to another. As the 18-year-old actor heads off in the fall to shoot the final two parts of the “Twilight” series for “Breaking Dawn” — slipping once again into the role of werewolf Jacob Black — he’s also got his eyes on his title role in “Stretch Armstrong,” a big-screen adaptation of the Hasbro action figure. As the title implies, this cinematic Stretch is an anxious spy who exposes himself to a formula that allows him to physically stretch his body to extremes. That power is hardly as cool as the ability to fly or shoot lasers from your eyes — in fact, it’s kinda lame — but as Lautner himself points out, that’s the point. “It’s like the worst superhero power, possibly, to get, and how you’re going to take that and use it for good and how you’re going to be creative with that [is the predicament],” Lautner told MTV News. The emphasis should be on the word “creative.” Unlike comic book franchises such as “Iron Man” or “Batman,” “Stretch” has no established story lines, giving screenwriter Nicholas Stoller a ton of latitude as he crafts the movie’s world. “The awesome thing with toys is it doesn’t give you a story line, so you get to create it,” Lautner added. “The development process for this movie has been awesome and it’s going to continue to be. I just can’t wait to see a script.” Right now, the actor is gearing up to shoot “Abduction” in the summer, followed by “Breaking Dawn” in the fall. Lautner is waiting to get his hands on the “Stretch” script before he slots the production into his schedule. There’s no set time for filming to commence on the 3-D film, which is slated for a 2012 release. “Nick [Stoller is] a genius, so I couldn’t be happier with the fact that he’s writing the script right now,” Lautner said. “I just want to see it.” Do you think Taylor will make a good superhero? But, as he told MTV News earlier this week, he still feels awkward stripping for those scenes as Jacob in the “Twilight Saga,” and he’s not about to show off his abs for just any role. “Originally I was supposed to take off my shirt [in ‘Valentine’s Day,’]” Lautner says in the July issue of GQ, on newsstands June 22. [LINK] “The script said we were walking into school and ‘ Willy takes off his shirt. ‘ I said, ‘Whoa, whoa, whoa. Time out. He’s gonna take off his shirt in the middle of school? No, no, no.’ The reason I took off my shirt for ‘New Moon’ is because it’s written in the book that way. And there’s reasons behind it.” Though he’s not into displaying it gratuitously, Lautner work extra hard to get and maintain that physique in the first place, and he described for GQ readers how he motivated himself during workouts. “I’m in the gym, and I’m doing reps, and I’m reading the books, and I’m studying the character,” he recalled. “I’m just saying to myself, ‘I want this role. I love this role. I’m not gonna lose it. And I’m gonna know it better than anybody. And I’m gonna do that extra rep, because I’m gonna be Jacob Black.’ ” In the issue, the 18-year-old also talks about why he’s still living at home with his parent, what it was like to present an award alongside Kristen Stewart at the Oscars and how he reacted when then-girlfriend Taylor Swift was interrupted by Kanye West at the VMAs. “I was standing behind [Taylor] as it was happening, and 100 percent I was sure it was staged!” Lautner explained. “I thought, ‘This was something that they rehearsed.’ I was enjoying the show! Taylor Lautner Found Shirtless ‘Eclipse’ Scenes Awkward

By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Taylor Lautner Photo: MTV News Fans have a lot of reasons to look forward to “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn” . There’s the tent scene, the leg hitch, the final battle scene and — of course — plenty of shots of Taylor Lautner’s abs. At a Los Angeles screening of the film, MTV News’ Josh Horowitz witnessed spontaneous cheering at Lautner’s first appearance on the big screen, in which he lacked (you guessed it) a shirt. Lautner has never been hesitant about saying that “Eclipse” is his favorite of the four novels in “The Twilight Saga,” and with a fan response like that, it’s not hard to see why. However, Lautner is quick to reassure that his objectification isn’t the reason he loves “Eclipse” the most. “It is a little awkward for me to watch myself, and actually, when we’re filming those scenes,” Lautner said. “But [‘Eclipse’] is my favorite one because it’s the most guy-friendly by far. It’s dangerous, there’s a lot of action. The romance is still there, but the action level is stepped up way more. It’s great. It’s definitely my favorite though.” Apparently filming the majority of “Eclipse” without his shirt on was easier than doing the same during “New Moon,” because “Eclipse” was filmed during the summer. However, despite the fact that Lautner has the rest of his wolf pack posse for shirtless solidarity, he admitted that it wasn’t any easier this time around being the one whose body the ladies were crushing on in “Eclipse.” “It’s a little different when I’m the only person on-set with his shirt off,” he admitted. ‘Stretch Armstrong’ Writer ‘Gets’ Taylor Lautner Obsession

By Josh Wigler Taylor Lautner Photo: Cohen/ WireImage Although he’s currently best known for playing hunky werewolf Jacob Black in “The Twilight Saga,” Taylor Lautner is about to stretch his acting chops significantly with an all-new action franchise. “Stretch Armstrong,” based on the action figure property from Hasbro, follows a special agent who suddenly finds himself with the superpower ability to extend his body beyond normal human limitations. “Get Him to the Greek” writer and director Nicholas Stoller is currently writing the superhero film’s screenplay, but he admitted to MTV News that he has found himself a bit distracted lately. Distracted by what, you ask? None other than Lautner himself! “I had my first meeting with him, and let me tell you: That dude is handsome,” Stoller confessed. “That is one good-looking man. Like, he is — I get it. I get it!” Pressed for further details on his first impressions of Lautner, Stoller said he hasn’t met anyone else in Hollywood who can attract a crowd quite like the “Twilight” sensation does. “At this point in my career, obviously you spend a lot of time with celebrities,” he said. “I’ve never seen more people approach someone [famous]. So many people come up to him, every age and a lot of French people.” Stoller also admitted that while he hasn’t seen Lautner without his shirt on , he certainly wouldn’t mind getting a firsthand look at the actor’s shirtless physique. “I’m not even going to do the whole ‘I’m not gay’ type of thing,” Stoller laughed. “Anyone, it doesn’t matter who you are, would want to see that!” Are you excited to see Taylor as Stretch Armstrong? Over the weekend, as Taylor worked the MTV Movie Awards crowd with his formidable charm and trademark smile, his next leading lady was eager to talk about the film they’re about to shoot together. “I’m off shooting this summer for ‘Abduction’ with Taylor Lautner ,” said 21-year-old Lily Collins, most recently seen in the Oscar-winning film “The Blind Side,” on the Lautner project often described as a younger Jason Bourne movie. “It will be a thriller with action, lots of stunts.” Sigourney Weaver recently signed on to the high-profile flick, which will be Lautner’s first true post-“Twilight” performance (we’d count “Valentine’s Day,” but we blinked and missed him). Directed by John Singleton, Lautner stars as a teen who stumbles upon his baby picture on a missing-persons website — setting off a massive quest to find his true identity. “Three months of hanging out with Taylor,” grinned the stunning Collins, dripping with sarcasm. “I don’t know what I’m going to do!” But in the minds of many Twilighters, there’s only one important question that needs to be answered before they fork over their hard-earned money for a ticket: Will Taylor be displaying that now-famous torso of his? “I’m sure they’ll work out something to make sure he does [lose his shirt] at some point,” Collins admitted. “Which everyone would totally hate, right?” A few moments later, Taylor would take the stage alongside his “Twilight” co-stars to unveil an exclusive “Eclipse” scene and pick up a few Golden Popcorns as well. Many in the crowd would have gladly given up their black T-shirts for a chance to meet TayCob, and soon enough, Lily will be working alongside him for months. But, as she told us, they’re already tight. “We’re friends,” she said.
