Johnny Depp, Robert Pattinson — Who Will Be 2010 MTV Movie Awards’ Global Superstar?

Taylor Lautner, Daniel Radcliffe, Kristen Stewart are also in contention — show begins Sunday night at 9 p.m.! By Todd Gilchrist Johnny Depp Photo: Robyn Beck/ AFP/ Getty Images Stardom comes in many different shapes and sizes, and the 2010 MTV Movie Awards pay tribute to all of them. There’s Breakthrough success, the acclaim that comes from a star-making turn or performance in a film. There’s Badass success — which certainly should speak for itself. And then there’s the Global Superstar , that actor or performer whose success has transcended geographic borders, age groups and gender to become recognized all over the globe — not only for their roles, but for themselves. Here’s a look at this year’s contenders: Johnny Depp From Edward Scissorhands to Ed Wood, from Jack Sparrow to the Mad Hatter — after so many unforgettable characters, it’s hard to imagine anyone doesn’t know who Johnny Depp is. Although he’s spent the majority of his career realizing oddball roles in movies of all sizes, he seems to have finally found a series of films that suit his larger-than-life characterizations, including (most recently) the particularly-mad Mad Hatter in longtime collaborator Tim Burton’s highly-anticipated film version of “Alice in Wonderland.” With “Dark Shadows,” “The Lone Ranger” and of course another “Pirates” movie on the horizon, Depp’s superstardom is in no danger of waning, and among the nominees, his is perhaps the longest-running. Taylor Lautner Prior to 2008, Taylor Lautner was probably best known as the Sharkboy in Robert Rodriguez’s family-friendly adventure “The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl.” But ’08’s “Twilight” brought him an entirely new kind of recognition — a recognition that he knew well enough to protect when time came to reprise the role in “New Moon.” Bulking up to proper hunk size, including a formidable set of abs, Lautner made himself more than a match for the looks and charm of Robert Pattinson’s competitor for Bella’s attention, Edward Cullen, and exploded across the globe as a star in his own right. Although he’s just starting to capitalize on that success by appearing in other blockbusters like “Valentine’s Day,” Lautner is the kind of movie star whose visibility more than makes up for his longevity. Robert Pattinson Even if he hadn’t stepped into the shoes of Edward Cullen, the dreamy, translucent crush object for millions of teenage girls (and their moms) from the “Twilight” book and film series, Robert Pattinson would still be a star thanks to his turn as Cedric Diggory in two of the “Harry Potter” films. But about a second after he offered his first in a series of longing stares at Kristen Stewart’s Bella in the first “Twilight” film, he became an international icon, and hasn’t slowed down since that film was released in 2008. Additionally, he immersed himself in several non-“Twilight” roles in films like those in “Little Ashes” and “Remember Me,” proving not only that he can open a movie on the strength of his fandom, but take a bite out of a variety of characters, whether or not they’re vampires. Daniel Radcliffe Radcliffe was only 12 when the first Harry Potter film was released in 2001 — and if you look back at him then, he was a tiny, adorable charmer in oversized glasses and a Hogwarts gown that practically swallowed him whole. But a decade later, Radcliffe has matured into not only the grown-up hero that Harry himself has become, but an adult star in his own right, offering remarkable performances on stage and screen that attract audiences of all shapes and sizes. As the first part of “The Deathly Hallows,” an epic adaptation of the final book in Harry’s saga, arrives in theaters in November of 2010 — you’ll see an exclusive clip during the Movie Awards tonight — Radcliffe is poised to become one of the world’s most recognizable performers. Kristen Stewart After a couple of uncredited and low-key roles in films like “The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas,” Kristen Stewart broke into the public consciousness as the daughter of Jodie Foster in David Fincher’s terrific 2002 containment thriller “Panic Room.” Flash to six years later, she creates her own panic rooms wherever she goes thanks to her unforgettable turn as Bella, the iconic wallflower-turned-vampire lover in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight book series. In the meantime, however, she’s done an amazing job showing that she’s more than the devoted girlfriend of a handsome bloodsucker, playing in acclaimed films like “The Runaways,” “Into the Wild” and “Adventureland” as she proves that her recognition and success is well-deserved. Don’t miss the live red-carpet coverage, exclusive movie clips and fist-pumping action on MTV News’ “Jersey Shore Blow-Out at the MTV Movie Awards,” airing live from Los Angeles tonight at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Sigourney Weaver To Co-Star With Taylor Lautner In ‘Abduction’

‘Avatar’ star will play Lautner’s character’s psychiatrist in the 2011 thriller. By Adam Rosenberg Sigourney Weaver Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images Based on the latest casting announcement, you’d be forgiven for thinking that “Abduction” focuses on a kidnapping perpetrated by little green men: Sigourney Weaver has joined the cast of the John Singleton-directed thriller. Weaver is set to star opposite Lily Collins and “Twilight” lead Taylor Lautner . Weaver is perhaps best known for her roles in sci-fi epics like “Avatar” and the “Alien” series, but “Abduction” is very much grounded in the real world. Lautner stars as a young man who one day discovers his own baby picture on a missing persons website. Variety reports that Weaver will play his psychiatrist. The story comes from a spec script by newcomer Shawn Christensen. The movie is set to shoot this July in Pittsburgh, with plans for a 2011 release. Gotham Group and Vertigo are producing along with Lautner’s Tailor Made label. Weaver will next be seen starring with Kristen Bell, Jamie Lee Curtis and Betty White in the Disney live-action release “You Again.” She has a number of other roles lined up as well, including Greg Mottola’s sci-fi comedy “Paul,” “Clueless” director Amy Heckerling’s ” ‘Sex and the City’ with vampires” movie “Vamps” and the long-awaited third “Ghostbusters” film. Lautner will of course next be seen reprising his role as Jacob Black in “Eclipse,” which hits theaters on June 30. He’s also got comic-book adaptation “Stretch Armstrong” lined up, from a script by Nicholas Stoller (re-writing Steve Oedekerk’s original), which is planned for an early 2012 release. It is expected that Lautner will be back on-set to shoot the final chapter in the “Twilight” series, “Breaking Dawn,” before the end of the year, though Summit’s rumored plans to break the story into two films remain unconfirmed. Katy Perry’s ‘California Gurls’ Rules iTunes Singles Chart

The latest ‘Glee’ soundtrack has a lock on the site’s albums chart. By Gil Kaufman Katy Perry Photo: Alberto E. Rodriguez/ WireImage Though she lost out to Lady Gaga in MTV News’ summer jam 2010 poll , Katy Perry is still off to a pretty good start of the season. With the help of Snoop Dogg , the singer has notched a #1 on the iTunes singles chart for the week ending Monday (May 31) with her song of the summer contender, “California Gurls.” The top of the list, frankly, looks like a who’s who of our summer jam nominees, with B.o.B ‘s “Airplanes” coming in at #2, followed by Usher ‘s “OMG,” Ke$ha ‘s “Your Love Is My Drug,” Eminem ‘s “Not Afraid” and the actual hottest summer jam, Lady Gaga ‘s “Alejandro,” as voted on by MTV.com readers. The rest of the iTunes single chart is rounded out by La Roux ‘s “Bulletproof,” the “Glee” cast cover of Gaga’s “Poker Face,” Travie McCoy ‘s “Billionaire” and Taio Cruz ‘s “Break Your Heart.” Though iTunes does not release sales figures, the picture at the top of the site’s albums chart should be familiar to anyone who saw last week’s Billboard 200 chart, since it’s topped by the third volume of jazz-hands-worthy covers from the “Glee” crew, Glee: The Music, Vol. 3 Showstoppers. Just behind are reunited glam rock survivors Stone Temple Pilots, whose self-titled comeback album will likely top next week’s Billboard tally. Gaga hangs tough at #3 with The Fame ; followed by the Black Keys ‘ Brothers ; the “Sex and the City 2” soundtrack; B.o.B.’s debut, B.o.B. Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray and yet another “Glee” compilation, Glee: The Music, Journey to Regionals. The list is rounded out by Distant Relatives, the full album collaboration between rapper Nas and reggae scion Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley , LCD Soundsystem ‘s This Is Happening and Lady Antebellum ‘s Need You Now. Taylor Lautner Is Les Grossman’s Latest Victim In MTV Movie Awards Promo

For more from the ‘Tropic Thunder’ mega mogul, tune in to MTV this Sunday, June 6, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. By Kara Warner Tinseltown’s resident “mega mogul” Les Grossman is back with another MTV Movie Awards promo. It seems the “Tropic Thunder” scene-stealer’s VIP clientele is endless. His last spot featured Robert Pattinson , one of the biggest stars in the Movie Awards universe, and in the latest video, Grossman has a chat with the other “Twilight” stud, Taylor Lautner. The video opens with Grossman’s customary method of conversation: laying into an unknown producer with a string of insults and profanity. “Mr. ‘Avatar,’ sugart–s,” he dismisses the minion over his bluetooth headset. “I don’t give a sh– about the laws of physics, because I want it in 4-D! Do it!” Grossman ends the call, then turns his attention to the teen heartthrob. “This is going to be a great show,” he tells Lautner. Looking unaffected by (or used to) Les’ rant, Taylor responds, “Les, we already talked about this, remember? My agents told you. That weekend is my best friend’s wedding and I’m the … ” “Best man,” Grossman interjects. “Understood. All cool. Bring in Taylor’s double,” he commands, upon which a stand-in is brought in — a man clearly years older than Lautner swirling a glass of whiskey, dressed in what looks to be a tuxedo he may or may not have slept in the night before. Lautner’s reaction is slightly annoyed. “Nobody’s going to believe this is me,” he says. “I’m sorry, which Taylor said that?” Grossman says, trying to play off the fact that Lautner’s “double” is a joke. He eventually relents and tells the double to “f— off.” “Do you smell that?” Grossman asks, returning his full attention and sinister grin to Lautner. “We just took this sh– to the next level. Pound it out, big guy.” Lautner reluctantly bumps Grossman’s meaty fists. For more of Lautner and Grossman, tune in to the MTV Movie Awards this Sunday, June 6, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on MTV! Alfred Molina Hunts Taylor Lautner In ‘Abduction’

‘Spider-Man 2’ villain stars as a CIA agent looking to track down a runaway teenager in the upcoming thriller. By Josh Wigler Taylor Lautner Photo: Cohen/ WireImage The people responsible for director John Singleton’s “Abduction” are starting to come together, as Deadline Hollywood reports that “Spider-Man 2” actor Alfred Molina will join “Twilight” star Taylor Lautner for the upcoming action thriller. “Abduction” tells the story of a teenager (Lautner) who discovers that the parents who raised him are not his biological parents after all. When he reaches out to his birth parents, the hero finds himself tangled up in a web of deception, danger and espionage as he runs for his life. According to Deadline, Molina will play the role of “a dogged CIA agent who is one step behind Lautner but determined to bring him in alive.” The previously cast Lily Collins, who starred in last year’s “The Blind Side,” joins Lautner on the run as his character’s love interest. Molina will next be seen on the big screen alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in director Mike Newell’s “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” based on the hit video game franchise. He also stars as Maxim Horvath opposite Nicolas Cage in “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” set for release later this year. In 2004, Molina performed his highest-profile role to date as mad scientist Otto Octavius, a.k.a. Doc Ock, in the second “Spider-Man” film. “Abduction” is just one of many film projects currently in the works for Lautner. He’s also signed on to starring roles in martial-arts thriller “Cancun” and superhero film “Stretch Armstrong,” based on the action-figure franchise from Hasbro. He’ll also reprise his role as Jacob Black for “Breaking Dawn,” the final installment in the “Twilight” series, directed by Bill Condon .
