On The Come Up: 60-Year-Old Strip Joint Waitress Settles For 60K In Age Discrimination Suit

Go ‘head Granny: A 60-year-old waitress who claimed she was fired from a Houston flesh palace because of age discrimination received a $60,000 settlement last week from her former employers. Mary Bassi was 56 and slinging drinks at the Cover Girls jiggle joint when she was let go in 2006, according to the Houston Chronicle. Bassi — who earned between the high five figures and low six figures — was canned after two male managers in their 30s joked that she was exhibiting signs of Alzheimer’s and made other snarky cracks, the paper reported. Prior to being cut loose, Bassi alleged that the managers had scheduled younger waitresses to cover her shifts. The owners, denying any wrongdoing, agreed to settle the lawsuit filed by the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Bassi is now working at another Houston adult club. Good for her, but it might be time to think about working in a different type of establishment. Source

Pair of Women to Sue Dr. Phil For Locking Them in House With Naked Dude

Several women are suing TV doctor personality Dr. Phil, claiming he traumatized them by trapping them in a house and forcing them to look at a naked man. Somewhere, Brett Favre is jealous he didn’t think of this. Four years ago, six individuals, including plaintiffs Crystal Matchett and Shirley Dieu , were invited to a house as Phil’s “dinner guests.” Worst. Dinner. Ever. The invitation was part of a Big Brother-esque type episode where these individuals were secured in a ” mock house ” with no contact from the outside world. On the third night, the women opened the door to their “house” to find a naked man. The women then hid in a room and allegedly asked to leave. The TV crew laughed at them and promptly refused. We don’t know what the point of the sequestration or naked dude was, but we look forward to hearing Phil’s explanation for it in response to the lawsuit. When the two ladies originally filed their lawsuits last year, CBS filed an anti-SLAPP motion, arguing that Dr. Phil’s conduct was protected free speech. However, a circuit court denied the motion, asserting that what was shown on Dr. Phil’s show is considered “entertainment,” not of “public interest.” Therefore, it doesn’t qualify for protection under the 1st Amendment. But because the women both signed contracts with the show, an appeals court this morning that they could not sue CBS for negligence. However … They may sue in a lower court, which include fraud, misrepresentation, breach of fiduciary duty, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. According to a source, this rule demonstrates “a likelihood” that the women will win their case. Oh, guess what, too? It’s YOUR FAULT, PHIL!!

Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds: Just Friends

Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds spent New Year’s Eve celebrating in Austin, Texas … but despite what you want to think, it was friendly . That’s it. “A group of old friends that included Ryan and Sandra spent New Year’s together at Sandra’s restaurant Bess Bistro,” her rep confirmed … however: “Ryan, Sandra and the whole group had a great time ringing in the New Year as they have in the past … as nothing more than friends.” Hey, they’re both newly available … Despite speculation, a source close to Reynolds echoes the sentiment that there’s nothing romantic in real life between the on-screen lovebirds. Bullock, who has been friendly with both Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds from before they split up, stopped by the table to say hello. Anything aside from that is purely wishful thinking … but come on, how hard do you want these two to get together? We can totally see it …

Brett Favre Sacked By Sexual Harassment Lawsuit

Brett Favre really enjoyed his one season in New York. The NFL legend, who delivered his annual retirement speech Monday, is being sued by massage therapists Christina Scavo and Shannon O’Toole, who worked for the New York Jets in 2008. The franchise is also named in the lawsuit. This is unrelated to the $50,000 fine Brett received from the NFL last week in conjunction with the Jenn Sterger sexting / wang photo scandal. Maybe Brett can un-retire to pay for his legal fees . Scavo alleges that Favre sent lewd texts to her and treated her like a “hanging slab of meat” back in 2008, and that he proposed a three-way with her and another massage therapist, writing a text to the other woman about it no less. “Brett here, you and Crissy want to get together, I’m all alone,” he sexted, allegedly. Scavo claims that when she rejected the advances of the quarterback, her husband, Joseph Scavo, called him personally to demand an apology. Joseph Scavo said his wife then came under fire from her boss, Lisa Ripi, who hired the two women and who is also a defendant in the lawsuit . According to the suit, Scavo and Shannon O’Toole, who accuses Favre of similar behavior, were never offered work with the Jets again after that. Scavo and O’Toole’s attorney, Elizabeth Eilender, said her clients did not want to file a lawsuit, but felt they had no choice given their lost work. Representatives for Favre, whose legacy is taking quite a hit, were not available for comment. The NFL and the Jets had no comment either.

US sues BP over oil disaster

The US is suing BP and eight other firms for allegedly violating federal safety regulations in connection with the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. The lawsuit asks that they be held liable without limitation for all clean-up and damage costs. The Deepwater Horizon drilling rig explosion in April killed 11 workers and spilled millions of barrels of oil over several months. The oil leak became the worst environmental disaster in US history. The lawsuit charges the companies under the US Clean Water Act and Oil Pollution Act. US Attorney General Eric Holder said the complaint alleges that “violations of safety and operational regulations” caused the 20 April explosion. The companies targeted in the lawsuit are BP Exploration and Production Inc, Anadarko Exploration & Production LP, Anadarko Petroleum Corporation, MOEX Offshore 2007 LLC, Triton Asset Leasing GMBH, Transocean Holdings LLC, Transocean Offshore Deepwater Drilling Inc, Transocean Deepwater Inc and QBE Underwriting Ltd/Lloyd's Syndicate 1036 – BP's insurer. The key accusations are: * Failing to take necessary precautions to keep the Macondo Well under control in the period leading up to the April 20th explosion * Failing to use the best available and safest drilling technology to monitor the well's conditions * Failing to maintain continuous surveillance * Failing to use and maintain equipment and material that were available and necessary to ensure the safety and protection of personnel, equipment, natural resources, and the environment Halliburton, the company that cemented the Macondo Well, and Cameron International, which provided equipment for the well, were not targeted in the lawsuit. But the Justice Department said on Wednesday that the investigation into the oil spill was ongoing and more defendants and charges could be added to the suit. “We intend to prove that these defendants are responsible for government removal costs, economic losses and environmental damages without limitation,” Mr Holder said. “As investigations continue, we will not hesitate to take whatever steps necessary to hold accountable those responsible for this spill,” Mr Holder added. Mr Holder did not specify a timetable in the lawsuit, instead saying the US would move as quickly as possible in the matter. Eleven workers on the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig were killed by an explosion which followed, and hundreds of miles of coast were polluted before it was stemmed in July. added by: Jake_Leonard

US Government Claims Right to Kill Americans Anytime and Anywhere

(The+Media+Freedom+Foundation)&utm_content=Google+Feedfetcher The Obama Administration currently asserts it has the right to kill any American they deem a threat or terrorist without judicial review. The Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) and the ALCU currently are challenging this notion in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. This lawsuit stems from the killing of Nasser Al-Aulaqi’s son (who was an U.S. citizen) who was targeted and killed by the United States Government. It is interesting to note that according to CCR Staff Attorney Pardiss Kabriaei “The Supreme Court has repeatedly rejected the government’s claim to an unchecked system of global detention, and the district court should similarly reject the administration’s claim here to an unchecked system of global targeted killing”. The ACLU and CCR hopes the will court rule the U.S. Government can only kill a U.S. citizen if there is a proof of an imminent threat to life. “If the Constitution means anything, it surely means that the president does not have unreviewable authority to summarily execute any American whom he concludes is an enemy of the state,” said Jameel Jaffer, Deputy Legal Director of the ACLU, who presented arguments in the case. “It’s the government’s responsibility to protect the nation from terrorist attacks, but the courts have a crucial role to play in ensuring that counterterrorism policies are consistent with the Constitution.” Title: Obama Administration Claims Unchecked Authority to Kill Americans Outside Combat Zones Publication: CommonDreams.org, November 8th, 2010 Author: ACLU and Center for Constitutional Rights URL: http://www.commondreams.org/headline/2010/11/08-4 Faculty Evaluator: Cynthia Boaz, Sonoma State University Student Researcher: Jason Corbett, Sonoma State University For more information on the case, including fact sheets and legal papers, visit: www.aclu.org/targetedkillings and www.ccrjustice.org/targetedkillings added by: treewolf39
