Professional sports have long had a disconnect between the players and management where diversity is concerned, so hats off to the NBA for setting an example for baseball, football and that weird boring ice game. The basketball league scores an A in both racial and gender diversity, with women sitting at 44 percent of the desks in league offices. AP via ESPN: The NBA was again the only men’s professional sports league to receive a combined “A” for race and gender in the annual report released Wednesday by the University of Central Florida’s Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport. Women made up 44 percent of professional employees at the league offices. That increased by one percent from last year, higher than any other men’s professional league in any previous study but still below the NBA’s high of 49 percent in the 1995-96 season. There also were 34 women in vice president positions in the league office, an increase of three. And while the league received high marks for gender again, Lapchick said that might be the area the NBA can make the biggest strides. Several newborns from ‘The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner’ could appear in the ‘Twilight’ film on June 30. By Terri Schwartz Stephenie Meyer’s “The Short Second Life Of Bree Tanner” Photo: Hachette Book Group With so much attention on the fact that “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” swept the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday, it is almost easy to forget that there was another exciting “Twilight”-related event this weekend: the release of “The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner” on Saturday. If you couldn’t get your hands on Stephenie Meyer’s new novella in the store over the past two days, it’s available to read online for free from Monday (June 7) until July 5 at BreeTanner.com . “Short Second Life” is more than just a companion story for “The Twilight Saga.” Meyer gave Jodelle Ferland and director David Slade the backstory of this character, so it seems pretty certain that some of Bree’s side of the story will make its way into the film when it opens on June 30. While Bree and Victoria’s henchman Riley were characters that readers met from Bella’s perspective in “Eclipse,” “Short Second Life” introduces a few key members of the newborn army that may get some screen time in the upcoming film. Bree Tanner After running away from home because her father beat her, Bree was so hungry, all Riley had to do was promise her a burger to trick her into becoming a vampire. She’s not sure if she was 15 or 16 when she was turned, three months before the battle in “Eclipse.” Raoul and Kristie Of the twenty-odd newborns Bree is living with in “Short Second Life,” these are the two that are most likely to appear in the movie. They each lead their own “gang” of newborns, with Raoul controlling most of the male vampires and Kristie directing most of the females. Neither is physically described in the book, so it’s not clear exactly what they look like, but from the exclusive photo MTV received of the newborns following Riley out of a body of water, it can be inferred that they are the male and female vampires flanking him. Freaky Fred The two newborns that Bree befriends in “Short Second Life” are a bit less likely to make it into the final cut of “Eclipse.” Fred, a tall, muscular vampire with curly blond hair who Bree guesses to be around college-age, has the special ability to be able to repulse those around him, and can slip by unnoticed by making it so that no one can lay their eyes on him. He protects Bree this way and leaves the rest of the newborn pack before they confront the Cullens in the final battle. Diego The clear-headed newborn teams up with Bree early on in “Short Second Life” and the two develop a chaste but sweet romantic relationship over the course of one day. Diego is older than most of the others (by a few months) and not as savagely driven by his thirst. He’s described as having “dark, dense, curly hair, big, wide eyes and really full lips,” and — like all of Meyer’s vampires — he’s very, very pretty. SPOILER : His second life barely lasts longer than hers does, and he doesn’t make it to the final battle against the Cullens. A few other newborns named in the novella: Kevin, one of Raoul’s lackeys, and Sara and Jen, who follow Kristie. None of them received physical descriptions in the novella, so unless they are referred to by name, it will be hard to pin them down amid the rest of the army. There is also a vampire whom Bree calls “the blond Spider-man kid” because he talks about the comic book hero and climbs walls like him in one scene. As anyone who has read “Eclipse” knows, Victoria’s army doesn’t fare well against the Cullens, and neither does Bree. Still, her novella offers a unique opportunity for fans to get to know those that had once just been nameless enemies, making for a more poignant battle when the third “Twilight” film hits the big screen starting June 30. The West Coast MC and superfan roots for the purple-and-gold, gripes about unreliable refs. By Shaheem Reid Ice Cube Photo: MTV News Legendary West Coast mic enforcer Ice Cube is excited that the NBA Finals are upon us, but he feels that there may be something shady going on to make sure the Los Angeles Lakers vs. Boston Celtics series is extended as far as it can go. MTV News recently talked ball with Cube, and he insisted his beloved Lake show are the superior team, but the Cs may have some help from the boys-in-stripes, making some shady rulings inevitable during game play. “It’s gonna take [NBA Commissioner] David Stern to stop telling these refs how to ref these games,” Cube said, when asked what he thought it would take for the Lakers to repeat as NBA Champions. “I don’t know if they telling them how to ref these games, but it’s just ridiculous sometimes when I see these refs making sure that the series is extended. Games are leaned towards this team or that team. Every year is the same old dance. Everybody can pick two or three games where you knew the league had their hand in it.” True to Cube’s gripes, there were several questionable calls made during Game 2 of the finals Sunday night at the Staples Center, home of the Lakers. Even the team has had their complaints in the past about the finals officiating. Despite the refs’ calls, Cube said he felt confident his team will triumph over Boston, just like they did over the Phoenix Suns in the Western Conference Finals. “What about the Celtics?” Cube asked with a grin. “They can’t beat us four times without help either. They need help from the refs too. Did you see Game 2, when we played them in the finals that year [2008]? Game 2 was ridiculous. Ridiculous! It’s the same thing. It ain’t about the series. It’s about ‘Will it go to Game 6 or Game 7?’ That’s all the league care about.” Still, Cube said it’s purple-and-gold — all the way. “You sound like you got some doubt,” he said like the superfan he is. “Let me put that to rest. We got the team to win it all this year. Put your money on the Lakers.” The Lakers and Celtics play Game 3 of the NBA Finals on Tuesday night. Who are you rooting for in the NBA Finals? ‘Nah, we can’t get the #1 pick,’ the DMV MC recalls thinking of Wizards’ chances at star point guard John Wall. By Shaheem Reid Wale Photo: Getty Images Most of Wale’s hometown teams are giving fans great hope for the future. The Washington Nationals have a tremendous blue chip prospect pitcher in Stephen Strasburg. The Redskins acquired a first-ballot Hall of Fame quarterback in Donovan McNabb via trade and, this week, the Washington Wizards hit the lotto! One of the worst teams in the NBA, the Wizards struck the jackpot by winning the NBA lottery, which entitled them to the very first pick in this year’s NBA draft. It’s projected that the team will go with University of Kentucky Point Guard John Wall. “I’mma have to call old Johnny Boy today,” Wale said by phone from Atlanta, where he’s been in the studio with Gucci Mane, Waka Flocka Flame and Yung LA. “I never met him. I’mma just talk to him. Hopefully we’ll get him. You never know, but either way, he’s gonna have a tremendous career.” Prior to the actual Draft lottery, 14 teams were ranked in order of their regular-season records. The league-worst New Jersey Nets held the top position and, therefore, the best opportunity to get the #1 pick, with a little more than a 25 percent chance. Meanwhile, the Wizards were in the middle of the pack of 14, with a 10 percent shot. The Wizards, of course, came out on top, moving up to get Wall. Wale said he was conducting business on Tuesday, but found it difficult to concentrate with the NBA draft lottery under way. “I was actually on a conference call with [an] important company,” Wale said. “It was a countdown. Then it was like, ‘Nah, we can’t get the #1 pick.’ When it got to five left, I was like, ‘No way.’ When it was three [teams left], I completely dropped out of the conference call. I was not paying attention at all.” Wale says Wall could bring the Wizards much needed energy. “Young blood, new blood,” the DMV MC said. “I think he’ll complement Andray Blatche and Gil [Arenas] as well. I think Blatche can definitely be one of the best forwards in the league — at least the top of the East Coast. I think [Wall] will give them a opportunity to do a little more. I think [Blatche] showed he’s capable of being one of the top big men in the league when everybody got traded [last season].” Still, Wale concedes the Wizards will need a little more than Wall to get back into championship contention. “We obviously need the fan support,” he said. “We need to change the morale of the team; they have to believe they can do it. I’m a big LeBron James fan, but I’m also very supportive of all the teams coming out of D.C. I’m extra supportive. I always sit on the [arena/stadium] floor and cheer on the teams whenever I’m home: Redskins, Nationals, Capitals and United. You go to the Redskins games, and people support them good or bad. The flow at the Wizards games was not looking good towards the end of the season. I wanna turn that around.” What do you think of Wale’s loyalty to his hometown teams? Tell us in the comments!
