‘Tron Legacy’: Under The Hood Of Three Cool Vehicles

Designer Daniel Simon gives MTV News a behind-the-scenes look at how the film’s futuristic machines were built. By Eric Ditzian Lightcycle in “Tron Legacy” Photo: Disney The “Tron Legacy” vehicle design team had one goal: “We wanted to make the most sexy vehicles ever onscreen.” According to German-born designer Daniel Simon, who worked on transforming the original film’s iconic creations from clunky machines to sleek, futuristic works of art, the crew set the bar high for themselves. It was a four-year process that began with director Joseph Kosinski and production designer Darren Gilford, who conceived the overall concepts and then brought in folks like Simon, whose work includes designing real-world Bugattis and Lamborghinis. Not that they actually built the lightcycles and lightjets we see in the finished film, which hit theaters on Friday (December 16). While the crew constructed each vehicle’s cockpit, complete with LED lights and instrumentation, the machines only exist on the sketchpad and in the ultra-powerful computers with which Kosinski created his film. Simon called up MTV News recently to walk us through the creation of three of the vehicles in the new movie. Here’s what we learned. Lightcycles As fans of the 1982 film know, the first lightcycles — those bikes that race forward and emit beams of light — weren’t open-air vehicles but rather sported concealing shields. You couldn’t see the actors furiously riding through the movie’s CGI world. The tech team back then simply didn’t possess the computing power to capture such complexity. They had to hide the actors. The first thing Kosinski wanted was to make his “Tron Legacy” bikes open-air. “It was a pretty obvious choice. That is what most motorcycles look like,” Simon said. “They had exactly those ideas in the ’80s but didn’t have the technology to execute them. Making the lightcycles open-air was a way to show off our technological revolution. And it’s more fun for the actors, since they can be seen and they can interact with the environment.” To further update the bikes, the team drew inspiration from real-world bikes built to set speed records. “From the rider position and the wheelbase, it’s inspired by land speed-record bikes that you would see in Bonneville or El Mirage,” Simon explained. “Motorcycle fans will know Burt Munro, who set all these records in the ’60s, he used the same rider position. The only difference is that you can’t actually turn a bike like how the bikes are turned in the movie!” Lightjets Simon and his fellow designers got a few simple directives for the lightjets, a collection of elegant warships that do some crazy aerial battling late in the film. As Simon puts it, “They said they want this vehicle to look elegant yet aggressive, it has to fit three people in and it has to have a gun in the back and the wings should fold up. But out of that concept, you can make 5,000 different designs.” Nor were they constrained by real-world consideration for airplanes; these lightjets never had to land safely at LAX. Yet such freedom had its limits: The jets had to conform to what the public is generally familiar with when it comes to aircraft. With so many possibilities, they drilled down to a few concrete references. “The big jets should be more like gliders, laid-back but still sinister with guns and sh–,” Simon said. “The small ones should be like mosquitoes, aggressive and very agile.” Quorra’s Car Olivia Wilde’s Quorra drives a seriously impressive sports car in the film. And there’s simply nothing like it on Earth. “There’s not a real car we referenced,” Simon said. “It’s freaking huge — almost 9-feet wide. It would kick every Lamborghini’s ass.” The car, it turned out, was too huge, and Simon had to go back to the drawing board. “The door has this scissor-swing opening and it was difficult to design,” he said. “And then the room where they were going to shoot it was not high enough for the door to swing open. We were like, ‘Oh sh–, this has to be a foot shorter!’ ” Check out everything we’ve got on “Tron Legacy.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . DJs Drama, Ill Will, Rockstar, More Make Our Top DJs Of 2010

It was a great year for street albums, and Mixtape Daily salutes the street kings. By Jayson Rodriguez, with additional reporting by Hillary Crosley, Rahman Dukes, Steven Roberts and Richard Sancho DJ Drama, DJ Holiday and DJ Scream Photo: Getty Images/ MTV News The mixtape game took a shot to the heart a few years ago when DJ Drama’s office was raided by the feds. Artists increasingly opted to make mixtapes that were essentially albums, projects produced without help from DJs and comprised mostly of original material. But slowly Gangsta Grillz began populating blogs, the same way they used to populate the streets, and those sites served as the new Burkinas. In the last 12 months, the mixtape circuit has never been healthier — just look at Dram still putting out his trademark rap heat and getting his slow jam on, pushing collections by the likes of Chris Brown, among other R&B stars. DJ Teknikz helped Travis Porter ink a deal with Jive Records. And Bigga Rankin scored an exec position with Young Jeezy’s CTE. Then there’s DJ Holiday and DJ Scream: both spin doctors break acts like Bo Jackson snapped bats. Meanwhile, DJ Ill Will and DJ Rockstar have become nearly ubiquitous with their onslaught of street albums. Pay attention, as the Mixtape Daily team continues our year-end awards by saluting the Top DJs of 2010. Wax King: Bigga Rankin Bordering Blocks : Atlanta Street Credentials :

‘Tron Legacy’ Star Olivia Wilde Recalls ‘Heart-Pounding’ Fight Scene

‘I was slammed back up against my chair, just overwhelmed by how awesome this movie turned out to be,’ actress tells MTV News. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Olivia Wilde Photo: MTV News “I was slammed back up against my chair, just overwhelmed by how awesome this movie turned out to be,” Olivia Wilde told us about watching “Tron Legacy” for the first time. It’s hard to disagree agree with the 26-year-old actress, who plays the bob-haired Quorra in the film. “Tron” is easily the most visually arresting film of the year, almost an art film made on a $170 million budget and filled with a handful of kick-ass fight sequences. The high-tech fisticuffs come courtesy of 87eleven, the stunt team behind brawls in “300,” “Iron Man 2” and the “Matrix” films. Of all the throw-downs, though, Wilde counts one in particular as her favorite. It comes late in the film, takes place in a computer-generated hotspot called the End of the Line club and pits Wilde and co-star Garrett Hedlund against a slew of bad guys. “It’s choreography we worked on for four months,” she said. “They showed us the choreography, and Garrett and I looked at each other and were like, ‘That’s not going to happen! We’re not going to be able to do that. That’s crazy stuff.’ And four months later, there we were doing it and enjoying it — really loving it. “When I saw the finished product of that scene, it’s so intense and beautiful and heart-pounding,” she added. “I was so proud.” Not only was Wilde proud, the entire production gave her the confidence to know that she could accomplish far more in front of the camera than she ever suspected. “It kind of proved to me I could really go outside my comfort zone,” she said. “This movie was the biggest physical transformation I’ve ever made. Also, a departure from my personality, more than any other character.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Tron Legacy.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . 13 Members (Including Eight Children) of "Cult-Like" Group Missing | May Have Plans for Mass Suicide | Palmdale, California | Videos

14 members of 'cult-like' group missing Six adults and eight children of a “cult-like” group in southern California were reported missing Saturday after they left behind notes saying they were going to meet Jesus and dead relatives, authorities say Police: Missing 'cult-like' group may have plans for mass suicide By the CNN Wire Staff September 19, 2010 3:32 a.m. EDT Members of a church group led by Reyna Chicas were reported missing amid fears they may be planning to take their own lives. STORY HIGHLIGHTS * NEW: Letters indicate plans for a mass suicide * Authorities say the group's notes say members are going to meet Jesus and dead relatives * The group leaves behind deeds to homes, cash and notes Los Angeles, California (CNN) — A “cult-like” group of 14 Salvadorans — including eight children — is missing in southern California after leaving behind notes indicating plans to commit a mass suicide, authorities said. The six boys and two girls in the group are ages 3 to 17, said Steve Whitmore, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. “The letters essentially state that they [missing persons] are all going to heaven shortly to meet Jesus and their deceased relatives,” the California governor's office said. “Numerous letters found say goodbye to their relatives. It is believed, through further investigation, that the missing persons' intentions are to commit mass suicide.” Investigators issued an alert Saturday night asking for assistance in locating the group from Palmdale. The alert was issued after two husbands of church members reported them missing, the governor's office said in a statement. Though the notes did not mention suicide, the outcome seems like a strong possibility, Whitmore said. The group is traveling in three vehicles — a 2004 Nissan Quest, a 1995 Mercury Villager and a remodeled Toyota Tundra, according to Whitmore. The group was reported missing Saturday afternoon — after it held a prayer meeting. “They left behind personal belongings and written notes … [saying] they're going to see dead relatives and Jesus,” Whitmore said. Items left behind include deeds to homes and cash, indicating “that someone is leaving it behind,” Whitmore said. The spokesman issued a televised plea to the group. “If you're watching this, come home,” Whitmore said. “Come home alive to the people who care for you.” Anyone with information is urged to call the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. CNN's Ninette Sosa and Rick Martin contributed to this report. http://www.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/09/19/california.missing.group/index.html?hpt=T1 added by: EthicalVegan

Open Thread: ‘Will Barack Obama Be a One-term President?’

“Yes, he might last that long,” Politico’s Roger Simon states in response to his own question. Honest to goodness, the man just does not get it. He might be forced to pull a Palin and resign before his first term is over. He could go off and write his memoirs and build his presidential library. (Both would be half-size, of course.) I am not saying Obama is not smart; he is as smart as a whip. I am just saying he does not understand what savvy first-term presidents need to understand: You have to stay on message, follow the polls, listen to your advisers (who are writing the message and taking the polls) and realize that when it comes to doing what is right versus doing what is expedient, you do what is expedient so that you can get reelected and do what is right in the second term. If at all possible. And it will help your legacy. And not endanger the election of others in your party. And not hurt the brand. Or upset people too much. Do you concur with that assessment, or is Simon being too cynical? Remember to give some examples to back up your point.
