Columbus Blue Jackets hockey star Jack Johnson has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and he blames his parents for leading him “financially astray.” Via ESPN reports : According to court documents, the close to $18 million that Jack Johnson has been paid in his NHL career is nearly gone. His parents apparently are to blame, the Columbus Dispatch reports . According to the Dispatch story, before Johnson signed his seven-year, $30.5 million deal in 2011, he granted power of attorney to his mother, Tina Johnson, that gave her full control of his finances. Jack Johnson claims that Tina Johnson and his father Jack Sr. bought a house in Manhattan Beach, California, with his money but without the player’s knowledge, according to the report. In addition, Johnson’s parents borrowed $15 million against their son’s future earnings. Many of the loans carried high interest rates, according to the Dispatch. The mortgage on the house carried a 12 percent rate, while a loan for $3 million was at 24 percent, leading to huge fees and, ultimately, default. According to documents filed in the United States Bankruptcy Court in the Southern District Court of Ohio that were obtained by ESPN.com, the 27-year-old Johnson has little left of the almost $18 million he has earned throughout his nine-year NHL career. His future earnings also appear compromised because of a tremendous amount of debt incurred, with court documents showing a list of creditors with unsecured claims totaling more than $1.68 million. In the filing, Johnson claims assets of less than $50,000 and total debts of more than $10 million. The Dispatch reported, through a source, that Johnson has cut off all contact with his family. “I’d say I picked the wrong people who led me down the wrong path,” Johnson told The Dispatch last week. “I’ve got people in place who are going to fix everything now. It’s something I should have done a long time ago.” According to one source familiar with the situation, there were warning signs early on during Johnson’s professional career, but the scenario is not altogether uncommon with hockey parents who have invested a lot in their children’s futures. “It happens way more than it should,” the source told ESPN.com. Johnson has petitioned to maintain his existing bank accounts so as to continue payment for living expenses, with court documents revealing that, at the date of petition, he carried a balance of $6,339 in his checking account and $2,202.62 in his savings account. The former first-round pick, who has seven assists in 15 games this season, has three seasons remaining on the $30.5 million deal. They “agreed to be married, holding themselves out as man and wife and began residing together in the State of Texas on or about September 2008,” he says. Texas defines the institution as a man and a woman who have declared their marriage, live together as man and wife, and “[represent] to others that they [are] married.” That’s not vague at all. Predictably, Iggy denies that any of of the above applies, taking her former boyfriend to task for his shady motives and tactics. According to Humor Mill Magazine: Last week Thursday during their ‘deepest, darkest secrets week’ where each host of The Talk delivers a dark secret, comedian and host Sheryl Underwood revealed something that she stated she never spoke aloud publicly; Underwood revealed that back in the 1990′s, she was up for a part on The Queens of Comedy tour, ( Walter Latham’s female spin-off of The Kings of Comedy ) and she stated before she had a chance to accept the role, she overheard three stars of the show talking trash about her on a conference call. Underwood stated she later called show creator Latham and told him she didn’t think the part would be the right fit for her. Underwood even stated that she has worked with Hayes and Givens since the incident, but up until now, the three women did not know that she overheard the phone call. After revealing her secret, Underwood insisted that she’s not angry or upset at her peers over the phone call that she happened upon 20 years ago. “I decided instead of being angry and vengeful, I took the truth and made myself even better,” she said. At that time, Laura Hayes, Adele Givens and Sommore hadn’t commented on Underwood’s story, until now. We just had a conversation with Givens about the interview because this morning on The Rickey Smiley Show , Givens was on the show disputing what had happened, and Walter Latham released a statement that was read on air by Smiley. According to the statement read by Latham, Underwood was never even invited by him to become part of the show. According to Givens, Underwood’s statement is a “blatant lie” and as a matter of fact “the conversation never happened because we were never on a conference call together discussing Sheryl”.
