Another Teabagger bites the dust! Via CBS News : Allen West Concedes In Florida The third time’s a charm. Patrick Murphy has declared victory twice already in his race against Rep. Allen West for Florida’s 18th district. But this time, a declaration of victory means a bit more. After two weeks of challenging the election results in one of South Florida’s congressional district, Republican Rep. Allen West is throwing in the towel. Early Tuesday morning, the Tea Party favorite conceded that he does not have enough votes to beat Murphy. “[W]e will not contest the certification or challenge the seating of Congressman-Elect Murphy,” West said in a statement according to The Palm Beach Post. Murphy remained ahead of West by 0.58 percent, which is more than the 0.5 percent margin required by Florida law to require a full recount. West has called for partial recounts and challenged the accuracy of the St. Lucie County Supervisor of Elections, but after a judge denied his latest request for a recount of all early votes and legal challenges failed to prove an alternate outcome, West conceded. He continued, however, to raise questions about the process. “While there are certainly still inaccuracies in the results and the actions of the St. Lucie County and Palm Beach County Supervisors of Elections rightly raise questions in my mind and for many voters, after much analysis and (Sunday’s) recount in St. Lucie County, our legal team does not believe there are enough over-counted, under-counted or fraudulent votes to change the outcome of the election,” West said in a statement. Despite West’s challenges, the 29-year-old Murphy was in Washington last week with the rest of the newly-elected members of the U.S. House for orientation. Womp! Womp! Taxpayer money spent really well …SMH. A homeless man had to pay $500 in bail or spend the night in jail this past Sunday. He chose the latter…and all of this was over his arrest for charging his cell using an outlet at a public picnic shelter. According to The Herald Tribune : Darren Kersey, 28, was charged with theft of utilities after Sarasota Police Sgt. Anthony Frangioni spotted him charging his phone at about 9:20 p.m. Sunday. Unable to come up with the $500 bail for the misdemeanor, Kersey had no choice but to stay in jail. In his arrest report, Frangioni wrote that he told Kersey that the “theft of city utilities will not be tolerated during this bad economy.” Frangioni also told Kersey that he should charge his phone at local shelters, according to the report. But Monday morning Circuit Judge Charles Williams threw the case out, saying Frangioni lacked the legal justification to make the arrest. Frangioni, a 14-year veteran of the Sarasota Police Department, did not return calls or emails seeking comment for this story. Neither did City Manager Thomas Barwin. Police spokesman Capt. Paul Sutton said Chief Mikel Hollaway, who was off Monday, will be reviewing the case today. Following the review the department is expected to issue a statement, Sutton said. The arrest threatens to add to a rolling battle between Sarasota and the American Civil Liberties Union, which have clashed over various homeless issues. Lost in the commotion over President Obama’s reelection : Colorado Amendment 64 legalized marijuana in the Rocky Mountain State on Election Day. Yes … the term “Rocky Mountain High” just took on a new meaning. Amendment 64, a measure seeking the legalization of marijuana for recreational use by adults, was passed by Colorado voters in a statewide reefer-endum (sorry). This makes Colorado the first U.S. state to end marijuana prohibition. Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper, a vocal opponent to the bill to legalize pot , reacted to the passage of A64 in a statement late Tuesday night: “The voters have spoken and we have to respect their will.” “This will be a complicated process, but we intend to follow through. That said, federal law still says marijuana is an illegal drug so don’t break out the Cheetos or Goldfish too quickly.” Awesome quote. Indeed, the passage of the state measure is without historical precedent and the consequences and implementation will likely be closely-watched around the world. Although Colorado “legalized it,” it will be several months, perhaps as long as a year, before Colorado adults over the age of 21 can enjoy the legal sale of marijuana. It is unclear how the amendment’s passage will be reconciled with existing federal law, or how the drug will be legally sold and regulated in the state. What do you think?
