Ja Rule’s Prison Sentence: What Led Up To It?

Queens MC also announces he’ll delay release of Pain is Love 2, which he’d hoped to drop before his two-year bid. By Alvin Blanco Ja Rule Photo: Jonathan Goldner/ MTV News On Wednesday (June 8), Ja Rule turned himself in to begin serving a two-year sentence on a gun charge stemming from his 2007 arrest in New York City. Although some rappers have endured a sentence as a mere bump in their careers ( Lil Wayne , for instance), Ja Rule’s bid arrives almost seven years since his last official album, R.U.L.E., and just as his Pain Is Love 2 has been delayed. Ja had initially planned to deliver PIL2 the day before starting his jail term, but according to his longtime collaborator 7 Aurelius, Rule postponed the release after deciding it hadn’t been completed to his satisfaction. “Me and Rule have to capture all the magic around us until he goes in, otherwise we are doing an injustice to his fans,” 7 told MurderInc-Online.com . “For example, if we had stopped in April just to be able to turn it in to [Fontana/Universal] for a June 7 date, PIL2 would not be what it is now. They have acknowledged that because it’s Ja Rule, they will give it a fast track release date once it is turned in and that would be digital and hard copy.” PIL2 is the sequel to Ja Rule’s triple-platinum third album, Pain Is Love. The Grammy-nominated LP was crucial in transforming Ja Rule from hip-hop star to mainstream sensation, thanks to hit singles like ‘Livin’ It Up” and “Always On Time,” featuring Ashanti. But Pain Is Love was released almost 10 years ago. Since then, Rule’s turmoil, whether legal issues or a long-running feud with nemesis 50 Cent , has overshadowed his music. And because of that, it can be easy to forget that at one point, Ja was easily rap’s #1 hit-maker. Here, we look back on the ‘Clap Back” MCs journey since that fateful night when he got caught with a gun in his ride. July 22, 2007 : Ja Rule is arrested on a Sunday evening in N.Y.C. — coincidentally, so is Lil Wayne in a separate incident after the same show at the Beacon Theatre. Ja had joined Wayne onstage that night as a special guest but after being pulled over for speeding, police discovered a .40 caliber pistol in Rule’s Maybach. The rapper was arraigned and released the next day on $150,000 bond. September 23, 2009 : Ja Rule and DMX see each other at VH1’s “Hip Hop Honors” and embrace, squashing their beef. Years before, X had accused Ja of imitating his style in song and the latter responded in kind. No hard feelings. September 2010 : Ja Rule reveals in an XXL magazine/ MTV “Sucker Free” video interview that he has changed the name of his new album from Venni Vetti Vecci 2010 to The Renaissance Project. Ja plans to release the album before the start of his prison sentence. December 13, 2010 : Ja Rule reaches a plea deal with prosecutors in N.Y.C. that will have him serve two years for criminal possession of a weapon. The guilty plea stems from the July 2007 incident. Ja Rule is expected to be sentenced in February 2011. January 3, 2011 : Ja announces via Twitter that The Renaissance Project will be released before he checks into prison. February 9, 2011 : Due to an error in his presenting report, Ja Rule’s sentencing gets pushed back, this time until March 9, when he will learn when he must surrender to authorities and begin serving his two-year sentence. That morning, Ja tweets that besides working on Renaissance, he is also working on Pain Is Love 2 with producer 7 Aurelius. March 9, 2011 : Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Richard Carruthers extends Ja Rule’s furlough until June 8 , when he is scheduled to report to prison. The extra time is given so the rapper can settle a federal tax issue and also allows him to finish a new album. March 22, 2011 : Ja Rule pleads guilty to tax evasion for failing to pay taxes on more than $3 million in income in New Jersey. As part of a plea deal, Ja must pay more than $1 million in back taxes and fines, and the government dismissed two charges against him for failure to pay taxes on income in 2007 and 2008. His sentencing for the tax evasion is scheduled for June 13. April 23, 2011: During the New York City stop of Diddy-Dirty Money’s Coming Home Tour , opening act Lloyd brings out Ja Rule and Ashanti as surprise special guests. The former Murder Inc. running mates perform Ja’s hit “Always On Time,” before the MC debuts a new song called “Real Life Fantasy.” April 27, 2011 : Ja Rule stops by “RapFix Live” and in a revealing interview with Sway, he gives insight into the trials and tribulations of his career and how he plans to make the best of his pending incarceration . June 8, 2011 : Ja Rule begins serving his sentence for attempted criminal possession of a weapon at an upstate New York correctional facility. Send your best wishes to Ja Rule in the comments below. J. Lo Sex Tape: Will it Actually Sell?

Just hearing the words ” Jennifer Lopez sex tape ” is likely to generate major celebrity gossip buzz and interest from companies to release such videos. But can her ex-husband Ojani Noa really close a huge deal with a big porn company legally – and would a company actually want what he’s got? Starting bids were “in the hundreds of thousands,” Noa’s manager, Ed Meyer, tells E! News , which reports that the price may “reach the millions.” Sounds INSANE. But here’s why it’s far, far from a done deal … Noa and his producing partner Claudia Vazquez say they are in no rush to make a decision, which likely means they haven’t gotten an offer. Think about it. You’re Ojani Noa . This is your one chance to strike it rich. You’re going to jump at any halfway decent sum that’s presented. Part of any company’s trepidation is the fact that J. Lo has fought for years to keep the footage on lockdown with a permanent injunction. A judge’s ruling on May 26 preventing Lopez from interfering with Vazquez’s livelihood does not change matters, according to her attorney. Basically, the legal saga is far from resolved. As for the tape itself? Noa and Lopez married in Miami in February 1997, long before she was famous. The footage now for sale comes from their honeymoon. Sounds hot, right? Well, it turns out the “J. Lo sex tape” is a bit of a misnomer. Ojani is not exactly putting it to the singer at any point. “There is about 15-20 minutes of total nudity between all the different clips among the 27 hours of footage,” Meyer told E! of the video. So no sex and 15-20 minutes of a young Jennifer Lopez nude over 27 HOURS. Sure, there will be interest from some people out there. A full-scale, high-priced bidding war, though? We just don’t see it.

Camille Grammer Sues for Custody of Children, Kelsey Fires Back

In round 216 of their never-ending, nauseating battle, Camille Grammer has fired back at her ex, Kelsey. In mid-May, the former sitcom star filed for custody of the children he shares with the Real Housewife of Beverly Hills. Now, claiming the actor took such a step “in order to create a false impression to the media and to wrongfully disparage” her, Camille has essentially done the same, submitting documents and fighting for primary custody of sons Mason, 9, and Jude, 6. In response, TMZ has obtained the legal papers Kelsey has filed in return, which state he has no hope that a settlement will be reached and – once an expert has completed an investigation of all involved – he wants the case to move to trial. It’s an ugly mess, with two young children caught in between. [Photos: WENN.com]

Gloria James Assault Accuser: So Traumatized!

The valet who claims he was slapped in the face by LeBron James’ mom Gloria James says he is just too traumatized by the experience to resume working. Parking cars at the Fountainbleau Hotel in Miami Beach can be tough when you’re experiencing what is TOTALLY a severe case of PTSD like he is, for sure. Sources close to Rockfeller Sorel say he’s taken an extended leave of absence and has been “very depressed” since Gloria James clocked him in the face. LeBROMMA DRAMA: Gloria James was arrested early Thursday a.m. Gloria, 43, was arrested over the incident – after which Sorel sought medical attention but showed minor, if any visible injuries – and charged with assault. A Tribe Called Quest Explain Their Sundance No-Show

Q-Tip tells MTV News documentary director Michael Rapaport mismanaged group’s travel plans. By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Sway Calloway A Tribe Called Quest’s Q-Tip Photo: MTV News A Tribe Called Quest say they’re not the bad guys. Two of the four members of the esteemed rap group, Q-Tip and Ali Shaheed Muhammad, recently sat down with MTV News — a third, Jarobi, spoke with us during the sit-down by phone — to elaborate on their issues with the Michael Rapaport-directed documentary , “Beats, Rhymes and Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest.” Although the film premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, Phife Dawg was the only ATCQ member to attend. The group did, however, issue a press release at the time expressing their support of the film . According to ATCA, the statement was to help counter any impressions that the group was not involved with the documentary. “We were being made to look like we weren’t a part of the process,” Ali told MTV News. “And we’ve been a part of the process from day one, when we were like, ‘OK, Mike, we cool with you being a director and telling the story of A Tribe Called Quest.’ We’ve always wanted everything to flow from beginning to end in a successful manner. Unfortunately, he was not playing along. There was no script; he had a ‘purpose.’ But it seems like the purpose he delivered to us verbally wasn’t what was being displayed.” Q-Tip then chimed in, citing an MTV News story in which Rapaport expressed disappointment about the full group not being at Sundance, even after the director said he’d allocated money to pay for their travel and lodging. Q-Tip insisted Rapaport “came out of his pocket for $5,000” in order to cover travel expenses for ATCQ and their managers, a figure he implied was particularly low for a week-long stay in Park City, Utah. Moreover, according to Ali, Rapaport misconstrued the situation by failing to reveal certain details. “It’s a deceptive way to tell what really happened,” Muhammad said. “Our management, they’re thorough and they capture things right away. They didn’t need five days to book a ticket; they were on top of it for months to get it covered. Why if he’s being asked the question to take care of the travel of the group that you need their support [for], why wait till the last minute to take care of it?” Ali was not at Sundance because he was on a tour that he told MTV News had been booked three months earlier, a fact that the documentary’s producers were aware of, he said. The ATCQ DJ expressed further dismay about all the promotion being done for a film the group had not properly vetted. “Before we go and do all of that rah-rah, can we even get the film correct?” Muhammad said. “We can’t even have conversations with you and your legal department to take care of other business. Not only can we not do that, we can’t even simplify a travel answer in a reasonable amount of time. It was so disheveled. How could we not be frustrated? But here we are moving forward, trying to be positive about the thing and he’s playing his PR game. At this point, here we are.” Q-Tip also dismissed any notion that he was apprehensive about the film’s content. “He’s out there saying quotes like, ‘I think they’re scared,’ ” Q-Tip said. “He singled me out saying that I was scared because the film was this open thing. I lived it, what am I going to be scared about? There’s not a big reveal in it that I didn’t know. I’m a human being, these are my brothers. What am I fearful about?” However, Q-Tip did express concern that the film might be imbalanced due to lack of context. After viewing a first edit of the film, Q-Tip, Ali, Rapaport and others went over the material to make suggestions. “After we worked on the edit I was like, ‘Yo, Mike, see? This is good. That’s how we supposed to do,’ ” Q-Tip recalled. ” ‘You still got your stuff, we got our stuff.’ We went over it, it’s great.” According to Q-Tip, Rapaport flew back to Los Angeles to implement the changes and piece the documentary together. But when the group received a second edit, they noticed they weren’t listed as producers on the film. After the group’s management asked that this be corrected, Rapaport admitted that their lack of a “producer” credit was no oversight. “Mike sends an e-mail saying why we shouldn’t be producers,” Q-Tip said. “Because it’s viewed as propaganda [if the featured artists are also producers], it would be biased and the public wouldn’t go for it. That’s what he said.” When MTV News’ Sway asked if they agreed with Rapaport’s reasoning, Jarobi responded, “I don’t buy it because I just watched that ‘Fab Five’ [documentary on ESPN] and Jalen Rose is an executive producer, so it doesn’t make sense to me.” Q-Tip added, “This is hip-hop, this is music, nobody writes the ironclad rules. This is what it is.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: A Tribe Called Quest

Mel Gibson Reaches A Plea Deal In Battery Case

Actor must complete 16 hours of community service and enroll in a 12-month domestic-violence program. By Jayson Rodriguez Mel Gibson arrives at the Los Angeles Courthouse Airport branch on Friday Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images Mel Gibson and his legal team reached a deal with prosecutors Friday (March 11) that will see the actor avoid jail time after being charged with misdemeanor battery earlier in the day. The actor appeared before a Los Angles judge and pleaded no contest to the charges. Under the terms of his agreement, Gibson must complete 16 hours of community service, enroll in a 12-month domestic-violence program and pay an assortment of court fees and fines. Gibson also must obey a strict order to not annoy, harass or threaten anyone with violence while serving out his various punishments. The actor has already begun reporting to a domestic-violence counselor and was ordered to submit a progress report during a status hearing June 9. By that date, the actor is also required to compete his community service, which he’s scheduled to perform at the Mending Kids International facility. Gibson’s deadline to complete his year of counseling is March 30, 2012. The actor has 36 hours to turn himself in for booking. The deal concludes an ugly split between Gibson and ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, the mother of his young daughter. The two dated briefly after Gibson and his wife of 26 years, Robyn, separated. Gibson and Grigorieva were ensnarled in a bitter custody dispute that was compounded by lawsuits the two filed against each other. Gibson accused Grigorieva of extortion and she alleged Gibson physically assaulted her.
