Michael Jackson’s Michael: A Track-By-Track Preview

Posthumous album has its moments, but seems to be missing MJ’s magic touch. By Jayson Rodriguez Michael Jackson’s Michael Photo: Epic Records Whether or not you’re happy about it, a new Michael Jackson album is arriving December 14. And while the beleaguered pop superstar died before the project could be completed, a team of producers who Jackson was working with over the past five years helped finish the collection, taking unfinished demos and crafting them into songs for Michael, the first posthumous set from MJ. The album is equal parts eagerly anticipated and highly controversial, with some fans and artists, including will.i.am , lashing out over the material. Last week, MTV News listened to a preview of Michael, featuring contributions from 50 Cent, Teddy Riley and Lenny Kravitz, among others. The LP was thrilling at times but suffered at other points without the King of Pop’s magic touch. 1. “Hold My Hand” (featuring Akon) This sweeping number, also produced by Akon, is as updated as MJ could ever sound without being present; the track honors Jackson’s vocals, leaving the track to serve as the sound bed to his soaring voice. 2. “Hollywood Tonight” A dated sound makes the Teddy Riley-produced number sound like a discarded contribution to Jackson’s Blood on the Dance Floor: HIStory in the Mix collection. 3. “Keep Your Head Up” The-Dream’s right-hand man, producer Christopher “Tricky” Stewart, serves Jackson a track that’s bakery-fresh, making for a song as stirring as “Heal the World.” 4. “(I Like) The Way You Love Me” Former Ne-Yo producer Theron “Neff-U” Feemster leaves MJ’s legacy in apt hands, as the Grammy-winning musician cooks up a track that’s as thrilling as anything the explosive star has ever sang. 5. “Monster” (featuring 50 Cent) This hard-charging track is as aggressive as “Scream” musically with its snappy drums and driving bass; “New Jack Swing” kingpin Teddy Riley adds just the right touch of boom-bap for 50 Cent to deliver his trademark taunts in tandem with MJ’s grunts. 6. “Best of Joy” This soaring number was one of the last tracks Jackson worked on during his lifetime while preparing for his comeback shows in London; the song reflects the spirited mood MJ was in, as it’s brimming with a liveliness not seen from the superstar since his first solo offerings. 7. “Breaking News” Overwrought with Jackson’s paranoia for the tabloid media and pumped with enough synthesized sounds to make the Situation turn in his glow stick, this one falls flat in comparison to the standout selections on the set. 8. “(I Can’t Make It) Another Day” (featuring Lenny Kravitz) Clashing sounds, from heavy guitar riffs to funky chords, make this track miss the mark despite the boundless possibilities in the pairing of Jackson and Kravitz. 9. “Behind the Mask” MJ sampled the Yellow Magic Orchestra’s track of the same name for this one, which shows promise but sounds like it could have used the Gloved One’s added attention. 10. “Much Too Soon” Overbearingly melancholy, this Jackson track pushes emotion onto the listeners when the singer’s sullen voice could have delivered without the leering musical attempt to draw out feeling. ‘Cindy and I are blessed to have found each other,’ legendary guitarist says in a statement. By Kelley L. Carter Carlos Santana performs in Tinley Park, IL on Friday Photo: Daniel Boczarski/Redferns Legendary guitarist Carlos Santana, 62, proposed to his girlfriend, 50-year-old drummer Cindy Blackman, onstage at his concert in Tinley Park, Illinois, on Friday. After she accepted, the couple kissed and fans cheered on the moment. “Cindy and I are blessed to have found each other,” Santana said in a statement released to MTV News. “Being in love is a gift from the universe, and the spirit and vibrations that come with it are infinitely powerful. I look forward to expressing that incredible energy through my music, and in helping to tip the balance toward more love in the world with what Cindy and I share.” The proposal came right after Blackman, a noted jazz percussionist who has worked with Lenny Kravitz and Cassandra Wilson, joined Santana for a drum solo on his track “Corazon Espinado.” Santana is about two months into the first leg of his Universal Tone Tour and is currently preparing for the release of Guitar Heaven: Santana Performs the Greatest Guitar Classics of All Time, his first studio album in six years. The tour’s next leg kicks off in late September — right around the release of the new project — with a monthlong stretch in Europe. No wedding information has been released yet, but this will be Santana’s second marriage. His first was to Deborah Santana, his wife of 34 years; she filed for divorce in 2007. Diddy Set To Guest On ‘Entourage’

The Bad Boy mogul plays himself on HBO show. Lenny Kravitz and Mark Wahlberg also make cameos in episode, airing in August. By Mawuse Ziegbe Diddy Photo: Getty Images For its seventh season, HBO’s “Entourage” is enlisting a superstar who’s known for rolling with his own mega-entourage. Diddy will make a guest appearance on the series’ upcoming season, which kicks off June 27. The show’s creator, Doug Ellin, told EW.com that Diddy will appear as himself alongside “Entourage” executive producer Mark Wahlberg in an episode set to air in August. “Turtle [Jerry Ferrara] is starting a business, and he’s trying to get them to invest in it,” Ellin explained. “He’s going to a lot of people about this investment.” Diddy tweeted the news on Thursday and included a link to a story posted on AOL’s TheBoombox.com . Rocker Lenny Kravitz will also make a cameo in the star-packed episode. “Ari’s trying to trade favors,” Ellin revealed to EW.com of the plotline that finds Jeremy Piven’s hard-driving agent wheeling and dealing as usual. “He’s got to get Lenny to do a movie so someone else will do something for him.” Diddy won’t be the first hip-hop artist to show up on “Entourage”: Bow Wow played an up-and-coming comedian, 50 Cent taunted Turtle in a guest spot as a cocky driver and Snoop also did his thing on the HBO hit; the West Coast MC played himself. Wahlberg recently told MTV News the new season could be the setup for a much buzzed-about “Entourage” movie. “I am more focused on making that movie than my own films,” Wahlberg said. “I just think we can make a great movie. I think people always wanted [it] and have complained that the episodes are too short — they’ve always wanted more. I think we’re going to do it,” he said. “We just have to end strong, and this season is, by far, the best season so far.” Both Diddy and Kravitz have been making power moves in Hollywood. Kravitz gave a touching portrayal as a male nurse in the Oscar-winning drama “Precious” , and Diddy’s scene-stealing turn in this month’s “Get Him to the Greek” won raves from co-star Jonah Hill. Lenny Kravitz Headlining Gulf Aid To Benefit Gulf Coast

Show aimed at putting spotlight on devastating oil spill also features Mos Def, Ani DiFranco. By Gil Kaufman Lenny Kravitz Photo: Jo Hale/ Getty Images With much of the music world’s attention focused on the devastating flooding in Nashville , Lenny Kravitz is hoping to put some of that focus on the environmental disaster that continues to unfold on the Gulf Coast as a result of the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Kravitz, who is a part-time New Orleans resident, is the latest name added to an all-star benefit show, Gulf Aid , slated to take place on May 16 at Mardi Gras World River City. The concert will feature the rocker performing alongside Mos Def, Ani DiFranco, New Orleans legend Allen Toussaint, environmental activist/ poet/ singer Zachary Richard, New Orleans trumpeter Jeremy Davenport and the Voice of the Wetlands Allstars, which features Crescent City legends Dr. John, Tab Benoit, George Porter Jr., Waylon Thibodeaux, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux and Cyril Neville. Also participating are the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk, Soul Rebels Brass Band, Irvin Mayfield’s Playhouse Revue, Kermit Ruffins and the BBQ Swingers, Rebirth Brass Band, and others. Tickets are $50 and available exclusively at Elevate.com . Proceeds will be distributed to groups addressing wetlands/coastal environmental issues and the well-being of fishermen and the regional seafood industry, a vital part of the local economy. “I’ve come home to New Orleans to lend my support to fishermen & wildlife,” Kravitz tweeted on Monday. The show will come almost three weeks after an explosion on an oil-drilling rig off the Louisiana coast burst into flames and sank, setting off one of the biggest oil spills in the history of the Gulf of Mexico. So far, efforts to contain the leak have failed, as more than 210,000 gallons of light crude spew into the water daily, threatening vital wetland ecosystems off the Louisiana coast as well as one of the nation’s most fertile fishing regions. On Tuesday, organizers of the upcoming Hangout Beach Music & Arts Festival (May 14-16) in Gulf Shores, Alabama, announced that all profits from the three-day event will benefit coastal conservation and restoration. Hangout will feature sets from Phish’s Trey Anastasio and TAB, Zac Brown Band, John Legend, Ben Harper and Relentless7, Black Crowes, Alison Krauss and Union Station, Gov’t Mule, the Roots, Ray LaMontagne, Jakob Dylan, Spearhead, Matisyahu, Girl Talk, and OK Go.
