Two men, Keith Liverpool, 35, and Junior Bradshaw, 32, have been found guilty of conspiring to rob and murder British pop singer Joss Stone in 2011. Liverpool was sentenced to at least 10 years and eight months. The sentencing of co-defendant Bradshaw was adjourned. The pair harbored a deep hatred for the soul artist, the three-week trial at Exeter Crown Court heard, though it is far from clear why (as it often is). They were convicted of conspiring to rob and kill Joss Stone last summer, they were then planning to dump her body in a river in her native England. Stunningly, the pair set off from their home with a samurai sword, knives, bags and gloves crammed in their Fiat Punto, bound for Stone’s address. However, their plan to rob and kill Miss Stone – whose birth name is Jocelyn Stoker – was fraught with problems and they were arrested, thank goodness. The guys became lost around seven miles from Stone’s home and stopped to ask postman Alex Greening for directions to the property in Ashill. They displayed a map with notes and a picture of the celebrity on it. The pair had earlier been stopped by police at the M5 Michaelwood services in Gloucestershireafter their Punto crashed into metal railings and a digger. Officers thought the car was too badly damaged to be driven and left. Not the case. The maligned pair continued their journey south. They were arrested on June 13, 2011, a few miles from Stone’s home when concerned local residents – spotting their crash-damaged car – called police. The suspicious uniformed PCs discovered Bradshaw did not have a driving license and arrested him. Their weapons and plot were soon uncovered. Giving evidence to the court, Stone admitted that there was lax security at her home, but said she only learned of the plot against her from police.
What goes better with Prohibition-Era literary adaptations than Beyonce , Lana Del Ray, and Florence + The Machine? Director Baz Luhrmann decided to commission some of today’s hottest stars to comprise the soundtrack to The Great Gatsby , adapted from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic American novel. The soundtrack is wonderfully featured in the new Great Gatsby trailer . Take a look: The Great Gatsby Trailer Extended Leonardo DiCaprio stars as the title millionaire, with Tobey Maguire, Carey Milligan, Joel Edgerton, Isla Fisher, Jason Clarke, Adelaide Clemens, and Elizabeth Debicki also star. Catch The Great Gatsby in theaters May 10.
A new trailer for The Great Gatsby has hit the web. Let’s see if it has all the ingredients of a Baz Luhrmman joint: Hot, youthful actors with well-defined jaws? Check. Eye-popping colors? Check. Settings suitable for an Architectural Digest cover story, even when they depict abject poverty? Check. Iconic period-piece story juxtaposed with hot-right-now soundtrack? Check. Multiple scenes of operatic emotional outbursts? CHECK! Luhrmann may make cool films, but his cinematic world runs hot. So, it’s amusing — but not surprising — to see that there is quite a bit of screaming going on in this new clip, which you can watch in its entirety at the end of the post. The first example can be found at the 35-second mark when Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jay Gatsby reacts rather emotionally to Joel Edgerton’s needling. (He plays Tom Buchanan.) From there, it’s a glimpse of the hell of war, as seen once more through the gaping mouth of DiCaprio: Next comes a shot of Tobey Maguire all dressed up and looking like he’s auditioning for the part of the Green Goblin in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man . A little later, we get Jason Clarke , who was so damn good in Zero Dark Thirty , pulling off a complex running-and-screaming combo. And then it’s back to Maguire for what looks like a five-vein meltdown…. Put those all together and you get this:
Martin Scorsese fans in America will have to take a trip to Germany to get a glimpse of Scorsese artifacts and history first-hand. A Berlin Museum will host an exhibition of all things Scorsese, opening the show just weeks before next month’s 63rd Berlin International Film Festival . The show by the Museum of Film and Television is being billed by organizers as the first exhibition worldwide dedicated to the work of the veteran filmmaker, who shared his belongings for the show. Notable items such as Robert De Niro’s blood-soaked shirt from Cape Fear and worn boxing gloves from Raging Bull are part of the Museum’s exhibition of Scorsese’s half-century career in film. Some of the objects you will see have literally been taken off the walls of my house and my office,” said Scorsese, who also narrates the show’s audio guide, according to The Telegraph . “I hope these objects and the exhibition… help give you an idea or convey my lifelong passion for film.” Scorsese did not attend the gala opening at the Berlin institution because he’s currently editing The Wolf of Wall Street , his fifth film starring Leonard DiCaprio. October’s Hurricane Sandy in the Northeast delayed production of the film. The exhibit also features letters between De Niro and Scorsese about developing characters and sharing sand-drawn storyboards for such films as Taxi Driver and Mean Streets . The show is divided into three parts with one focusing on the filmmaker’s home in the Little Italy neighborhood in Manhattan/ The second delves into Scorsese’s passion as a curator of cinema history and restoration, while the final section spotlights his aesthetic in his feature films and music documentaries. “The one bit of direction he gave us for the exhibition was not to focus too much on violence because his work is often reduced to that,” said co-curator Nils Warnecke. “And it’s true – if you look at the entire body of work, it really represents only a minority of the films.” The exhibit continues in the German capital through May 12 when it will head to Turin and Geneva. Browsing through the photo record of Tuesday’s Titanic 3D premiere in London, one notices immediately the absence of Leonardo DiCaprio. What gives? I mean, if Billy Zane can make time, then lord knows Leo should be able to drop in for at least a few snapshots with James Cameron and co-star Kate Winslet. At the very least, he’d better have a good excuse — which, according to Cameron, he did. Speaking to reporters on the red carpet, the filmmaker/ deep-sea habitué explained that DiCaprio was busy shooting Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained , and thus unavailable to travel. But that wasn’t all: “I didn’t show him the whole film but I showed him 18 minutes of it a few months ago,” Cameron continued, “It was a good reunion for us but great to watch his reaction. He couldn’t believe it. He said to me, ‘I’m such a young punk. Look at me.’ He was practically crawling under the seat. It was a good moment.” I can only presume this was the same clip package Cameron showed Movieline , which wasn’t that bad. Winslet, meanwhile, said she would seek similar refuge — from her nude scenes in particular: “I’m not going to look. I’ll be in the bar by that point or on the floor. I haven’t seen the whole film in a very long time, I’ve seen little pieces of it, but it’s a whole different me and we look much younger and our acting was different, hopefully not as good as now.” Never let go, babe. Now someone tell us where Kathy Bates was. [ OK! via Yahoo! , Metro ; photo via Daily Mail ] Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .
