Clint Eastwood’s Brawl Lessons, and Other Revelations from the J. Edgar Press Conference

At the press conference for J. Edgar , which premiered last night at AFI Fest to mixed, often hilarious reviews , stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Armie Hammer and Naomi Watts joined director Clint Eastwood, screenwriter Dustin Lance Black and producer Brian Grazer fielded questions about the very issues that make the biopic seem difficult to make: the ambiguity surrounding both Hoover and his confidants’ personal lives. Movieline culled the best five quotes from the panel, one of which involves 81-year-old Eastwood’s on-set brawling.

Blake Lively and Leonardo DiCaprio: It’s Over!

After five months, Blake Lively and Leonardo DiCaprio have broken up. Reps for both confirmed the parting of ways, adding that they “remain friends.” First spotted together in Monte Carlo at the Cannes Film Festival, the couple embarked on a whirlwind, super-luxe summer love-fest spanning the globe. During their time together, the Gossip Girl actress, 24, and Inception star, 36, were surprisingly open about their romance and seen frequently in public. The pair’s recent split is sure to come as a surprise to some DiCaprio pals, one of whom told Us Weekly that they’d “never seen him like this with a girl.” They spent much of the summer at DiCaprio’s L.A. home, where Lively “spent the whole time baking. Leo’s never dated a girl who can cook. He’s smitten!” After going strong all summer , the duo bonded with one another’s parents. Echoed another insider later this fall: “I bet they get engaged in six months.” Apparently it wasn’t meant to be, though. While sad for both, we wish Leo and Blake the best … and have little doubt they’ll find someone new if they want. Instantly.

Friday Box Office: Rocked Like a Hurricane

Most expected depressed box office numbers this weekend , but even negative nellies probably didn’t expect to see this. With Hurricane Irene battering the eastern seaboard, all three new releases stumbled badly on Friday, with opening days ranging from $2.3 million ( Our Idiot Brother ) to $4 million ( Colombiana ). Said one industry insider to Deadline: “Any way you slice it business is getting creamed this weekend.” Thanks, Mother Nature! Your Friday box office is here.

Departed Trio Leonardo DiCaprio, Martin Scorsese and William Monahan Attached to The Gambler

Bad news usually breaks late on a Friday, which makes it decidedly bizarre that this great news broke at 10:30 p.m. on the East Coast: Deadline reports that Leonardo DiCaprio is attached to star in the William Monahan-scripted remake of The Gambler , with Martin Scorsese attached to direct. (The three men previous teamed up for The Departed ) The 1974 version of The Gambler — based on a short story by Fyodor Dostoyevsky — followed a New York City school teacher (James Caan) who is addicted to gambling. No word yet when this will actually film, however, since both Scorsese and DiCaprio have full dance cards for the foreseeable future. [ Deadline ]

Kevin Costner In Talks for Sadistic Baddie in Django Unchained

It wouldn’t be a Quentin Tarantino film without some kind of reclamation project (see: John Travolta, Robert Forster, Pam Grier, David Carradine, Michael Parks), and so Django Unchained finally feels complete. Deadline reports that Kevin Costner is in talks to play the villainous sidekick of Leonardo DiCaprio in QT’ s latest genre potboiler, a role that goes wildly against Costner’s all-American wolf-dancing ’90s-era type.

Is Leonardo DiCaprio Right for Beyonce’s A Star is Born Remake?

Reflecting on all my years (one) of reviewing Bad Movies We Love, I think the most epically bad is the ’76 version of A Star is Born . Towering chestnut afros, Kneivel-like motorcycle accidents, the appearance of Gary Busey — it’s huge bad. But the newest update on Beyonce’s planned remake could be a step towards an even worse production: Leonardo DiCaprio is rumored to be discussing the Kris Kristofferson role with new director Clint Eastwood. Is this a good or groan-inducing idea?

Great Day For Movie Lovers: Martin Scorsese and 5 Other Singular Directors Announce New Projects

Somewhere in between false rumors about an Olivia Wilde Tomb Raider reboot and hopefully untrue speculation about another Terminator sequel , six interesting directors including Martin Scorsese, Richard Kelly and Kimberly Pierce announced new projects today. Thanks, movie-news Gods! Granted, not all of these projects will necessarily turn out well (or even at all), but if past work is any indication, the ones that crash and burn will at least do so in a unique, fascinating and hopefully spectacular fashion (Looking at you, Kelly…). Newsies Musical Gets Start Date

Newsies , perhaps the greatest Bad Movie We Love , will hit Broadway as a new musical from Sept. 15-Oct. 16 at Millburn, New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse. Original composer Alan Menken is signed on, and he says the show “latche[s] onto exciting elements of what we had in the movie,” while “minimizing the things that were not so great about the movie.” This is a man who understands lovable badness.
