David Letterman on Cheating, Sex Scandal: Reckless, Stupid Behavior

For the first time outside the comfort of his Late Show set, David Letterman addressed his recent sex scandal during a rare visit to Live with Regis & Kelly . After Regis Philbin posed a potentially awkward question about Letterman’s home life, Dave opened up with sincerity about cheating on wife Regina Lasko . “I don’t know if people know this, but I’ve had some trouble,” he joked. “You know when something like this happens – and mostly it was reckless behavior on my part – if you behave recklessly and it hurts your family, then of course it hurts you. “It was not a tragedy, it was just stupidity. And thank God, because we all know what tragedies are, and we all know how horrifying and scarring… and you can’t get beyond some of these. We all know what we’re talking about.” If nothing else, Letterman is refreshingly candid about his own failings . “You read about [these tragedies] every day. It’s just godawful. And when you’re a parent, this is your worst nightmare. So it wasn’t that, thank God.” What it was, Letterman continued uninterrupted about the extortion case that blew the lid off his affair with staffer Stephanie Birkitt , was stupidity. “It was stupid behavior … [an explosion] where you wake up every morning and you’re scared and you’re depressed and sad and you kind of gotta let that knock you down … and pretty soon you’ve gotta start knocking it down.” “And then when that happens, you’re able to take a look at the pieces left of your life, because you think an explosion has taken place, and you’re looking at the shards and you see, well, can we put this back together?” “By god, maybe you can put it back together, and maybe it won’t be the same, but maybe it’ll be different, maybe it can even be better in a different way.” “So that’s what we’re doing, we’re putting the thing back together to see what it will look like. Is it viable, is it something that can be satisfying, fulfilling.” Tiger Woods , take note. This is how you address your past transgressions if you want people to respect you again. We hope so. David Letterman Visits Regis, Adds ‘Knockwurst’ to Anti-Leno Glossary

Though Regis Philbin is still battling Paul Shaffer and the New York skyline for most appearances on David Letterman’s Late Show , Letterman made only his third appearance on Regis’s morning hour today. “You can’t see that on Maury !” Regis hollers. The old friends chatted about local issues like Jay Leno and screwing over Conan — all while Kelly Ripa seemed further away the more she leaned in. That’s Chekhov sh*t right there. Dave repeats his squawky Leno impersonation and after the jump, we’ll see if he really added anything to the Tonight Show dialogue besides the word “knockwurst.”

Late Night Highlights: A Batman Showdown with Adam West and KFC’s Double Down with Stephen Colbert

The late night commentary on Conan’s big move to TBS has been disappointing, mostly because there has not been much of it. David Letterman is dark this week. Jimmy Fallon and Craig Ferguson are silent on the matter. And Jay Leno is so crestfallen by the news that his bandleader Kevin Eubanks is leaving , that he can only spend his monologue energy on jokes about cats parallel parking cars . Don’t worry though — George Lopez is excited enough for everyone. Click through for his latest batch of LOCO -themed material and the other highlights you missed last night while updating your bandleader resume .

Chris Rock Mocks David Letterman Scandal

David Letterman tells jokes at others’ expense for a living. This week, he got a taste of his own medicine from a worthy comedic adversary, Chris Rock. Suffering from both a hoarse voice and a cold, Letterman gave Rock ample opportunities to mercilessly mock the talk show host’s messy personal life. “Dave, what the hell happened to your voice?” he asked. “You sound like an old ass man. You’re still doing the show? You’re rich, you could go home!” Then Rock joked in reference to Regina Lasko : “Wife still mad at you, ain’t she? I get it. Why drive back to Connecticut? Just do the show with no voice!” Chris Rock turns the tables on Letterman . Letterman took it in stride, and Rock later noted: “I’ve been there, man … When I’m on the road, I just add on shows! We’re doin’ Roanoke tonight!” Rock then continued his barrage, saying Dave “fired all the cute girls” that used to be backstage. Now it’s just “a bunch of fat old guys,” he lamented. Of course, Letterman had a comeback, “some of them are starting to look pretty good.” Follow the jump for some clips from the amusing exchange … Chris Rock on Letterman

Justin Bieber Rocks The Late Show

It’s been an interesting couple weeks for Justin Bieber. First, Ke$ha seemingly disrespected the young singer by referring to him as a “baby” (she later apologized). Jay Leno’s ‘Tonight Show’ Returns To First Place

Jay beats ‘Late Show With David Letterman’ in his first week back, but the gap narrows in the second week. By Josh Wigler Jay Leno on “The Tonight Show” Photo: NBC Despite the strong showing of fan support for freshly ousted “Tonight Show” host Conan O’Brien, it appears that many late-night television viewers have settled their personal differences with NBC and Jay Leno. According to The Associated Press, Leno averaged 5.6 million viewers in his first week back as the host of NBC’s “The Tonight Show,” easily outmatching the 3.66 million that tuned in for CBS’ “The Late Show With David Letterman.” Letterman, who consistently beat O’Brien in ratings throughout the recently departed host’s run on “The Tonight Show,” famously finished in second place next to Leno before he vacated the talk-show chair for his failed prime-time experiment, “The Jay Leno Show.” Additionally, Leno’s return to late night proved beneficial to “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.” Entertainment Weekly reports that the “Saturday Night Live” castmember-turned-host beat out CBS’ “The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson” by a margin of 147,000 viewers. While Leno’s first week marked a decisive win for NBC over CBS, his second week back wasn’t quite as victorious. From Monday through Thursday of this week, Leno averaged 4.3 million viewers against Letterman’s 4 million, depicting a much closer race between the late-night hosts than Leno’s first week back behind the desk seemed to indicate. Leno returned to “The Tonight Show” last week following a widely publicized dispute between NBC and Conan O’Brien. In his first show following his return to the 11:35 p.m. time slot, Leno joked that he would hold on to the “Tonight Show” hosting gig “at least for a while.” Since his departure from “The Tonight Show,” O’Brien — who is contractually prohibited from making television appearances until September 2010 — has kept his presence intact by joining Twitter and announcing a national comedy tour that will take place from April 12 through June. Have you been tuning in to Jay’s “Tonight Show” return? Do you miss Conan? Let us know!
