Maroon 5 ‘Born Again’ With Pop-Heavy Overexposed

‘It’s sort of like, ‘Screw you … deal with it. Come with us on this journey or bye,’ ‘ Adam Levine says of the album’s pop leanings. By James Montgomery Maroon 5’s James Valentine and Adam Levine Photo: The first thing you’ll probably notice about Maroon 5’s Overexposed album is the lengthy list of collaborators attached to it: a Murderer’s Row of pop hitmakers like Ryan Tedder, Shellback and Benny Blanco, with Max Martin helming it all as executive producer. The second thing you’ll probably notice is that it’s called Overexposed. Because, reinvigorated by the worldwide success of their hit “Moves Like Jagger” — which marked the first time the band had written with outside sources (in this case Blanco and Shellback) — M5 make no bones about the fact that, this time out, they’re aiming to become the most popular, inescapable and, yes, overexposed band on the planet. “The title is kind of pre-emptively saying, ‘Hey, we’re overexposed. Deal with it,’ ” frontman Adam Levine told MTV News during the premiere of M5’s new “One More Night” video . “Bands like to do this thing where they’re like, ‘Oh, man, we just didn’t know. Oh my God, it’s so crazy, we just wrote this song,’ and that’s true, but we like that. We want to have that experience, we want to have hits, we want to have songs that, internationally, people are going to know. “It’s exciting when you go to a country you’ve never been to, when you go to Jakarta, and they’re singing the lyrics to ‘Payphone,’ it’s so cool, ” he continued. “And that’s something that we not only love, but we pursue, unabashedly. Our sense of purpose was very dialed in. … We knew what we wanted, we knew in our minds how to achieve it on an album … and I think we found it.” And, in a lot of ways, it’s fitting that Overexposed (in stores now) comes exactly 10 years after the release of Maroon 5’s debut disc, Songs About Jane. Because ever since that album, they’ve been hearing complaints from fans who want them to return to their roots. The difference now is that they no longer listen to those complaints. Backed by the biggest names in the pop business, Maroon 5 are going for greatness these days, and like it or not, they’re not going to change course anytime soon. ” Songs About Jane was alienating a certain amount of our fanbase back then, and if we’re not alienating a small percentage of our fanbase every time we make a record, we’re doing something wrong,” Levine said. “And usually, I find that people who complain about wanting that original sound would be the same people where, if you had a record that sounded like the first one, they would say, ‘Why don’t you guys branch out and change a little bit?’ So it’s sort of like, ‘Screw you … deal with it. Come with us on this journey or bye!’ “When you’ve been in a band for a decade, even longer, you start thinking, ‘OK, well maybe now we should explore this or change things up,’ because you don’t want to have it sound formulaic or too much like what you’ve always done,” he continued. “So we’re totally cool with kind of being born again. … At the heart of it, it still sounds like us, but we embrace this side of our band, and now that we’ve fully captured it on this record, we’re going to see what happens, and I think it’s going to be really positive.” Stick with MTV News for more from our exclusive interview with Maroon 5! Maroon 5’s ‘One More Night’ Video: Adam Levine Loses Everything

Pop star plays a boxer whose relationship is in ruins because of his profession in the new clip. By John Mitchell Adam Levine in Maroon 5’s “One More Night” Photo: In Maroon 5 ‘s video for their latest single, “One More Night,” frontman Adam Levine plays a boxer dealing with personal turmoil as he prepares for a big fight. “One More Night” opens with two goldfish swimming around in a bowl before segueing into a sequence where the seemingly idyllic home life Levine enjoys with video girlfriend Minka Kelly and their baby daughter is set against scenes of his hands being wrapped and of him training in a boxing ring. At home, he eats a protein-heavy meal and revels in his baby girl’s laughter as he holds her high in the air. But all is not well, as frequent cuts to Kelly’s concerned frown let on. The writing is on the wall when he has to leave for a big fight. As he steps into the ring to cheers, she packs her bags. He wins the fight, but when he returns home battered from the battle, he finds he’s lost everything that really mattered. Kelly and their child are gone and all that’s left are the relics of his profession — trophies, a jump rope, a few pictures and a lone goldfish. Levine hustles in the ring and trains hard for the big show, but it ultimately comes at the expense of everything he holds dear. Taken further, the clip could be looked at as a metaphor for the difficulties Levine faces balancing his professional life as a world-famous singer and TV star and a personal life with the same wants (happy relationship, a family) as everyone else. Perhaps the video is a lingering response to his recent breakup from model Anne Vyalitsyna , which came less than a month before the band debuted the smash single, “Payphone” featuring Wiz Khalifa. The song continues to enjoy huge success on the charts; it is #3 on this week’s Billboard Hot 100, having peaked at #2 a few weeks back. Maroon 5 and Levine have been riding a professional high for some time (they spent weeks at #1 late last summer with the Grammy-nominated “Moves Like Jagger” and Levine has found major success on “The Voice”), but is it worth it when it comes at the expense of private happiness? That’s the question the “One More Night” seems to be asking. With the pop star left sitting alone on a couch in a sad, empty house at the video’s end, Levine’s answer to that question is pretty clear. What did you think of Maroon 5’s “One More Night” video? Octomom to Keep Her Kids … According to Octomom

Octomom’s 14 children will not be taken away from her because she is a fine mother and doing an exemplary job … according to Nadya Suleman herself. The Orange County Department of Children and Family Services came to her house on Thursday to investigate claims of her children living in putrid squalor. According to Octo, they gave her a “clean bill of health.” Three DCFS workers showed up at Nadya Suleman’s Orange County home, and she says they gave her a rave review … despite the shocking living conditions . Octo told TMZ, “[DCFS] said it’s a very suitable environment for these children.” Even crazier, Octo claims DCFS workers were actually impressed with her parenting skills, saying “They can’t even believe that I can do what I’ve been doing.” You know, we could say the same, though in an entirely different context. Is this woman delusional? They couldn’t possibly have said that, right? Octomom did have a four-person cleaning crew show up prior to DCFS’ arrival, so it’s likely the place was not as bad as when her hairstylist blew the whistle. Still, it’s gotta be a madhouse, and she has no way of supporting a family that size. It’s well established. So should Octomom’s kids be taken away ? [Photo: WENN.com]

Adam Levine Responds to "Aggressive" Jennifer Love Hewitt

Adam Levine appeared on Ellen yesterday and the host wasted little time getting to the important issues with The Voice judge. “Let’s talk about the women that love you,” DeGeneres said to cheers from the audience, specifically referring to Jennifer Love Hewitt’s recent appearance on the show when she made it clear she’d be open to dating/doing Levine . Is the artist, who recently split from Anne Vyalitsyna , interested? “That was aggressive,” Levine said, politely declining.

The Voice Results: Adam and Cee Lo Save …

After Adam Levine and Cee Lo Green sent home Pip and James Massone, respectively, in The Voice’s instant elimination round Monday, they had to turn around and cut another contestant apiece on last night’s results show. Tony Lucca (Adam) and Jamar Rogers (Cee Lo) advanced from America’s votes. That left Mathai and Katrina Parker to sing for Adam’s save, with Cheesa and Juliet Simms battling for Cee Lo’s spot in the semifinals. Who moved on? The Voice: Adam Levine Saves … Mathai sang a spirited version of Carrie Underwood’s “Cowboy Casanova” but it was Katrina Parker’s version of “Perfect” by Pink that won over the panel. Adam struggled with the decision but finally chose Katrina to continue on. “I’m shocked and obviously very happy,” Katrina said, fighting through the tears. “This is very bittersweet because I’m very attached to Mathai.” Mathai, for her part, was a class act as she thanked Adam, the show and America for “showing me how much I want to sing for the rest of my life.” The Voice: Cee Lo Green Saves … As for Team Cee Lo, Cheesa and Juliet went toe to toe with the former belting out Kelly Clarkson’s “Already Gone” and the latter “Torn” by Natalie Imbruglia. Cee Lo hammed and hawed a bit, but he ultimately saved Juliet from elimination, citing the extent to which America has rallied around her this spring. Not enough to save her with their votes, but still, point taken. Do you think Adam and Cee Lo made the right calls? Who will win The Voice? Tell us below!
