Really?? Ugandan Newspaper Publishes Identities Of “Top 200 Homos” In The Country After Passing Law Banning Gay Sex

Ugandan Newspaper Publishes Identities Of “Top 200 Homos” In The Country The Ugandan community has been making national headlines lately as a result of their very public anti-gay rhetoric as a country, which reached its’ peak thus far yesterday when Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni officially signed the “Anti-Homosexuality Act” into law. Now, one day after the signing a Ugandan newspaper has released a list of the top 200 gay people in the country, all but urging resident who see anyone on the list to bring them to “justice.” via Gawker If you were curious about the practical implications of Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act, signed yesterday by President Yoweri Museveni, look no further than its Red Pepper newspaper, which has published the identities of what it deems the country’s “200 Top Homos” on its cover. If you thought the law banning gay sex would exist only in the realm of gay sex, you were wrong. This is a war on gay people. Red Pepper’s move is similar to that of a now defunct paper called Rolling Stone (no relation to the U.S. music magazine), which published a list of Uganda’s “Top 100 Homos” in 2010. It was a call to action: “Hang Them” read the issue’s cover. About three months later, Ugandan activist David Kato who was among the paper’s Top 100, was bludgeoned to death. In response, Rolling Stone publisher Giles Muhame said, “This looks like any other crime. I have no regrets about the story. We were just exposing people who were doing wrong.” In the 2012 documentary Call Me Kuchu, which details the struggles of the LGBT community in Uganda, Muhame giggles as he discusses his paper’s detrimental outings (there was a followup a few weeks later, which identified 10 more Ugandan gays). Regardless of your personal beliefs with regard to the LGBT community, no human being deserves to be physically harmed or brutally ridiculed for they way the choose to live their personal lives, which most likely what’s coming next following the release of this “list”. SMH!

GLAAD Takes a Look At Hollywood, Isn’t Impressed

In its first report on Hollywood, GLAAD has discovered that the representation of gay, lesbian, and transgendered individuals in movies isn’t quite where they’d like it to be. The organization looked at 101 movies and ran them through their Vitto Russo test which looks at whether a character is defined by their sexual orientation or “simply provide colorful commentary, paint urban authenticity, or (perhaps most commonly) set up a punchline.”  Fewer than half of the films “tested” passed the Vitto Russo test, named for the organizations co-founder. The greatest population of LGBT character were of the male Caucasian variety. Lesbians and bisexuals were represented at a much lower percentage. Out of the six major studios, Universal led the charge with four films featuring LGBT characters with 20th Century Fox coming in last with a whopping zero. The report found that most LGBT characters were found in comedies, with studios appearing “reluctant” to cast LGBT characters in action movies and the many superhero films.  Pushing for more representation, GLAAD stated that “When LGBT people or couples are made part of a larger ensemble or even features in brief, casual manner, at the very least it reminds the audience that LGBT people are a part of the same society and present a more accurate portrait of that society.”

Really? Fox News Contributor Compares Same-Sex Love To “Monster” Ariel Castro’s Love For Kidnap Victims

Fox News’ Sandy Rios: LGBT Love Is Like Ariel Castro Love For Victims LGBT love is to pedophilia as _________________ is to _____________________?? Via Raw Story: In a discussion on Friday about how marriage equality and LGBT rights are responsible for gang violence in Chicago and the collapse of society, Fox News contributor and American Family Association radio host Sandy Rios and anti-LGBT evangelical pastor Erwin Lutzer compared the love LGBT couples feel for each other to pedophilia, rape and the feelings Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro had toward the women he imprisoned and abused. Lutzer was discoursing on a popular anti-LGBT theme, that people may feel attractions and longings for people other than their opposite sex, but “that does not mean we can simply follow our desires wherever they lead us. You know, a pedophile, I’m sure, says that he loves children. As a matter of fact he does, but you can see how destructive that love is.” Once love is no longer defined as feelings between a man and a woman, Lutzer said, “we end up where we are ending up today, with a great slide in morality, the destruction of the family, the confusion that children grow up with.” Rios agreed with Lutzer’s sentiments, saying, “You know, the gentleman that was just sentenced yesterday for holding those women hostage in Ohio, and molesting them for years and doing terrible things to them, his defense was that he ‘loved’ his family, he ‘loved’ his child that was born out of one of the rapes that he did of one of those women. He ‘loved’ and he couldn’t understand. He said, ‘I’m not a monster.’” Fox News folks stay out of pocket… Continue reading

Jason Collins Gets MAJOR Twitter Love From NBA, Clintons, Athletes, Celebs

NBA player Jason Collins came out as gay in Sports Illustrated today, igniting a flurry of discussion and receiving an outpouring of support online. “I didn’t set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport. But since I am, I’m happy to start the conversation,” he said. And start it he did. With a few exceptions ( Mike Wallace ), the vast majority of reactions to Jason Collins’ coming out have been positive. Check out some of the best celebrity Tweets in support of 34-year-old Collins, a 12-year NBA veteran and member of the Washington Wizards: Kobe Bryant: Proud of @jasoncollins34. Don’t suffocate who u r because of the ignorance of others #courage #support #mambaarmystandup #BYOU The Rock: Being real & authentic is very powerful. Well done Jason Collins for having the courage to take a monumental step forward. #LiveReal Russell Simmons: Proud of Washington Wizards’ player Jason Collins for coming out. We will stand with you as you continue on your journey. Martina Navratilova: It’s not easy to come out when one is still active- shouldn’t be an issue, but it is. That’s why so many don’t do it till after. Well done Jason Collins – you are a brave man. And a big man at that 🙂 1981 was the year for me – 2013 is the year for you 🙂 Lance Bass: Congrats @jasoncollins34 !! Giant leap for sports – and the conversation continues! Spike Lee: Beautiful Thing. Be Yourself. Washington Wizards: We are extremely proud of Jason & support his decision to live his life proudly and openly. Baron Davis: I am so proud of my bro @jasoncollins34 for being real. #FTheHaters Howard Stern: Big support to @jasoncollins34. That’s not an easy thing you did. Steve Nash: The time has come. Maximum respect. Michael Strahan: So proud of @jasoncollins34 for having the courage to stand up and out for who he is. I support, respect and salute you!! Human Rights Campaign: RT to congratulate NBA player @JasonCollins34 for his courage to come out! Bill Clinton: I’m proud to call Jason Collins a friend. I have known Jason since he was Chelsea’s classmate and friend at Stanford. Jason’s announcement today is an important moment for professional sports and in the history of the LGBT community. It is also the straightforward statement of a good man who wants no more than what so many of us seek: to be able to be who we are; to do our work; to build families and to contribute to our communities. For so many members of the LGBT community, these simple goals remain elusive. I hope that everyone, particularly Jason’s colleagues in the NBA, the media and his many fans extend to him their support and the respect he has earned. Chelsea Clinton: Very proud of my friend Jason Collins for having the strength & courage to be the first openly gay player in the NBA. David Stern: As Adam Silver and I said to Jason, we have known the Collins family since Jason and Jarron joined the NBA in 2001 and they have been exemplary members of the NBA family. Jason has been a widely respected player and teammate throughout his career and we are proud he has assumed the leadership mantle on this very important issue. #NBAFamily
