The trailer hints at strains with similarly aged friends as Jane’s (Hemingway) bond with her elderly friend grows. Official log line below : Starlet explores the unlikely friendship between 21 year-old aspiring actress Jane (Dree Hemingway) and elderly widow Sadie (Besedka Johnson) after their worlds collide in California’s San Fernando Valley.  Jane spends her time getting high with her dysfunctional roommates and taking care of her chihuahua Starlet, while Sadie passes her days alone, tending to her garden.  After a confrontation at a yard sale, Jane finds something unexpected in a relic from Sadie’s past. Press-Shy Wachowski Siblings Go Public For ‘Cloud Atlas’ And LGBT Cause

Despite their enormous successes, the Wachowskis are known for being among the more press-shy filmmakers in Hollywood. But for their latest opus, the sprawling, soul-stirring Cloud Atlas (co-directed with Tom Tykwer), the duo have blazed a trail talking up their ambitious passion project — partly, as Lana Wachowski explains, because of the film’s deeply personal connection to her own recent transformation. The film, adapted from David Mitchell’s novel, tells six interconnected nested stories across the span of hundreds of years, following the same souls evolving through multiple lifetimes. The cast, including Tom Hanks , Halle Berry , Jim Sturgess , Jim Broadbent, Ben Whishaw , James D’Arcy, Hugh Grant, Hugo Weaving, and Doona Bae, play multiple parts often under make-up and prosthetics in the gender- and race-bending ensemble. [ GALLERY: First images from sci-fi opus Cloud Atlas ] Lana Wachowski, a bubbly and luminous presence on the Cloud Atlas press tour with her bright pink dreads and beaming smile, spoke of the privacy she and brother Andy fought for years to protect — and why it was important to trade that veil now, with the world watching. “Anonymity enables you to inhabit civic space, and that way of being in the world is very important to us,” said Lana over the weekend in Beverly Hills. “We like the access that anonymity gives you to the world. As soon as you give it up, you give up a part of your human experience, your humanity.” The decision to peel back the curtain for the first time in 13 years was a tough one, but co-director Tykwer’s experience with press was encouraging and Lana’s opportunity to raise awareness for and give voice to the LGBT experience compelled the Wachowskis to submit to interviews and appearances for their $100 million indie film (which incredibly enough given their past work on the game-changing Matrix series, is their most ambitious and challenging project to date). “When I was a kid one of the reasons that I was depressed about my life and my situation was that there weren’t people like me — there weren’t transgendered people in Hollywood,” Lana offered. “I didn’t even know a writer that was transgendered. There was this feeling that because I was the way I was I would not be able to do something that I imagined that I wanted to do. It would be closed to me, it would be denied me just because of who I was.” “By being more public I, perhaps, am fulfilling a role in my own life in terms of a sort of Cloud Atlas ian consequence, a past life and future life,” she continued. “In a way, I am a future life for that younger part of me looking for someone like me, a role model like me. And if I can suggest to younger people or other LGBT people that it is possible to be in Hollywood and be trangender or is possible to be a writer and be transgender and that gives them hope or lets them shed fear about being who they are, then it’s worth it to sit down with [journalists].” Added Andy: “It’s worth it for me to give up my anonymity as well for that young Lana out there as well. Solidarity to all of our LGBT brothers and sisters out there.” Cloud Atlas hits theaters October 26. Read more on the film here . Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Eddie Cibrian: (Mostly) Naked For Charisma!

We’ve seen Eddie Cibrian naked for Charisma. Now we’re seeing him … almost naked. The actor is stripping down again for the brand, this time for the purpose of modeling some fluffy, soft towels in a sexy Spring 2012 ad campaign. Appropriate, since he’s wearing nothing but: Cibrian, divorced from The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills’ Brandi Glanville and married to country singer LeAnn Rimes, tries to keep the modeling job in perspective. “You have a lot of people on the photo shoot looking at you, going, ‘Oh that looks wonderful, that’s unbelievable … those [towels] look great,’” he said. “I realized it was all about the product, and not about me.” Still, Cibrian, who appears in the upcoming Tyler Perry film Good Deeds , makes it pretty hard to focus on those towels … are we right ladies?

Roland Martin Suspended By CNN For Offensive Tweets

Roland Martin may have been joking about Super Bowl-related topics with some off-color Tweets Sunday night, but his bosses at CNN definitely didn’t find it funny. The political contributor has been suspended by the network after his remarks – most notably about David Beckham’s H&M underwear ad – were called homophobic. Gay-rights powerhouse GLAAD pushed hard for CNN to fire Martin. That did not happen, but disciplinary sanctions were taken, and his return date is not clear. In a statement, CNN said: “[Martin’s] tweets were regrettable and offensive. Language that demeans is inconsistent with the values and culture of our organization, and is not tolerated.” “We have been giving careful consideration to this matter, and Roland Martin will not be appearing on our air for the time being.” Martin fired off the controversial tweet (above) during the Super Bowl. In another, he wrote, “Who the hell was that New England Patriot they just showed in a head to toe pink suit? Oh, he needs a visit from #teamwhipdatass.” Martin tried to backpedal by issuing an apology Monday. “Based on several tweets I made on my Twitter feed on Super Bowl Sunday yesterday, I have been accused by members of the LGBT community of being supportive of violence against gays and lesbians and bullying,” he wrote. “That is furthest from the truth, and I sincerely regret any offense my words caused.” GLAAD, for one, seems satisfied, saying in a statement: “CNN today took a strong stand against anti-LGBT violence and language that demeans any community.” “Yesterday, Martin also spoke out against anti-LGBT violence.” “We at GLAAD look forward to hearing from CNN and Roland Martin to discuss how we can work together as allies and achieve our common goal of reducing anti-LGBT violence as well as the language that contributes to it.” What do you think? Should Martin have been fired?

Watch the Lady Gaga Parody ‘X-Men: Born This Way’: Little Mutants for Little Monsters

Somehow, Lady Gaga’s uber-hyped single “Born This Way” made an impact here at Movieline. I encouraged the medium convergence, as the self-love-touting single could work as an anthem for many cinematic characters. Now, YouTube parodists have taken up that lead, mashing up Gaga’s song with X-Men: First Class ‘s mutant beginnings. You’ll remember that the movie and the original song are pretty much about the same thing , anyway. The first line alone will slay you.

Ricky Martin, ‘True Blood’ Win GLAAD Awards

Tina Fey was also on hand to accept the Outstanding Individual Episode award for ’30 Rock.’ By Jocelyn Vena Ricky Martin at the GLAAD Awards on Saturday Photo: Dimitrios Kambouris/ WireImage Tina Fey, “True Blood” star Denis O’Hare and Patrick Wilson are just of few of the celebrities who gathered at the 22nd Annual GLAAD Media Awards , hosted by Bravo’s Andy Cohen on Saturday in New York. The awards honor “fair, accurate and inclusive representations” of the LGBT community in television and journalism. Big winners of the night included “True Blood,” which won for Outstanding Drama Series, and “30 Rock,” which won for Outstanding Individual Episode (in a series without a regular LGBT character) for its “Klaus & Greta” episode. Entrepreneur Russell Simmons was honored with the Excellence in Media Award. Ricky Martin took home the Vito Russo Award, which is presented to a “lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting equality for the LGBT community.” In his speech, Martin credited GLAAD for helping him cope in the wake of his public coming out last year on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” He then went on to push for Latin American gay rights and asked that GLAAD stand up for those who can’t in that community. “I just want to be free. I can say today I’m free,” he said at the event. “And for that I definitely need to thank my parents for being so supportive, my mother and my dad for their unconditional love, and my friends, my family, my fans. And my partner in crime and my boyfriend Carlos.” That was only the beginning of the accolades for those projects and people nominated, with additional GLAAD awards scheduled to be handed out in Los Angeles on April 10 and in San Francisco on May 14. Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’: The New Gay Anthem?

‘Anything she says, I think, will always be the gay anthem,’ says comedian Gabe Liedman. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Larry Busacca/ Getty Images With lyrics like “Don’t be a drag, just be a queen” and “No matter gay, straight or bi/ Lesbian, transgendered life/ I’m on the right track, baby/ I was born to survive,” it’s clear that Gaga is singing for those in the LGBT community who feel disenfranchised on her new track ” Born This Way .” Perhaps it was no mistake that Gaga debuted the club-friendly track on a Friday, the day many people head out on the town. So, as those in the LGBT community make their Friday night plans, MTV News found out what some prominent professionals in the community think about the track and got their answers to the question: Is this the new gay anthem? “Typically, gay anthems have been chosen by gay people, not for gay people. The explicitly pro-gay sentiment is something relatively new to major-label pop (especially major-label pop launching a much-anticipated album by arguably the most relevant pop star in the world right now),” Rich Juzwiak, author of the pop-culture FourFour blog, explained. “I have mixed feelings about the conflation of activism and marketing inherent in a piece of commerce like ‘Born This Way,’ but ultimately, I think Gaga’s heart is in the right place. It’s pretty bold of her, while at the same time being utterly beneficial to her career and exposure.” Logo/NewNowNext.com editor John Polly noted that the song has all the right elements to be adopted as the anthem for 2011. “Its big, it’s loud, it’s fun!” he said. “It sounds like someone mashed up a zillion mirrors in a drag queen’s closet and then shot it out of a sequin cannon … subtle! Subtle! “This one has more [gay anthem elements] than most,” he continued. “It calls out every color of the rainbow, like specifically, vocally. Everything’s in there. It’s got it all and it’s got a beat. It’s familiar, but it’s new. It’s Gaga. She’s got something in there for everyone, so hopefully people are into it … I think you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck, a lot of big gay noise that’s going on.” Gabe Liedman, comedian and pop-culture expert, described the track as “perfect” and admits that Gaga has it locked up, that is until she releases her next track off the May album of the same name. “I mean, she didn’t waste any time with poetry,” he teased. “She kind of got right to the point. It’s not subtle. There’s no misinterpreting it. That’s what she thinks: You’re born this way, born this gay! “I think this will be the gay anthem for as long as it takes before her next song comes out,” he joked. “And that will be the gay anthem and then anything that comes out after that. Anything she says, I think, will always be the gay anthem, until she dies?” Related Artists Lady Gaga
