The Keeping Up with the Kardashians Seasin 14 finale was titled “The Gender Reveal.” For what reason? Because Khloe Kardashian learned during the episode whether she was having a boy or a girl baby in a few weeks! She learned this vital piece of information from half-sister Kylie Jenner for some scripted reason, as Kylie called Keeks while the latter was on vacation in San Francisco. (Would a doctor even tell the results to anyone aside from his or her patient? We’re pretty sure not. But whatever. This is TV, people!) “You’re having a girl!” a pumped-up Kylie tells Khloe over the phone. “You’re lying!” responds a stunned Khloe. “I’m not lying,” Kylie replies. “I’m so excited for you Khloe!” But Khloe can’t reciprocate this feeling. She sounds very disappointed with the news, saying it comes as a major surprise, despite there being just two possibilities for what this answer could have been. “I don’t feel like I’m having a girl,” she says. Kim, who was on the trip with Khloe, then tried to comfort her sister, saying, she, too, was sad to discover she was having a girl the first time she was pregnant. “It’s OK, I cried when I found out North was going to be a girl too,” she explained. “I don’t feel like I’m having a girl at all. I’m like in a state of shock,” Khloe reiterated, sticking to whatever words were penned for her by producers that would milk this moment for all the drama possible. On Twitter after the finale aired, Khloe said she had a boy name picked out, which is part of the reason why she felt so let down by the truth. She also tried to expound on her initial reaction on the episode itself: “When you have your mind made up as to what you’re having, like everyone told me you’re going to feel what you’re having and you’ll just kind of know. “And then when you find out it’s the complete opposite it’s just a shock. “I just was convinced that I was having a boy, so to be having a girl it’s just like, ‘OK that wasn’t what I thought was going on.'” Khloe then called her mother and went over the whole story again. “I’m really hoping Kylie’s gonna say she’s lying and like I’m really having a boy,” Kardashian said, still unable to process this truly unexpected developments. Replied Kris Jenner: “Khloe, the only thing I wanted in life, the only thing, was a boy. Brown / Getty Olivia Pope and Annalise Keating are respectively revered and despised so it was only a matter of time that they meet and we’re so glad that this day has finally come! SHOOK! Tonight’s TGIT crossover event is How to Get Away With Scandal , and it’s everything we needed our Thursday night TV session to be, especially as our lit Black History Month ends and gives way to Women’s History Month. via GIPHY The first portion of the show is the Scandal hour. We pick back up at Olivia’s lecture. She is moonlighting as a professor since her people in Washington DC are done with her, and the lecture is about How to Survive a Scandal . Her students aren’t doing so well answering her questions, but Annalise fills in the gaps where they lack and Olivia is impressed. Annalise shoots her shot at the end of the lecture. Olivia is not interested in taking the case at first, citing that she knows about Annalise is a hot mess and wishes her luck with the case. Annalise urges her to look the case over and think about it, and we all know what will happen. Olivia has been trash the past few episodes, but we know she’s about social justice too. She talks it over with Marcus and he obviously gives her the push she needs to move past Annalise’s past and give the case a shot. You already know how he feels about black and brown people in numbers at disproportionate rates. Prison reform for the win! Olivia informs Annalise that she’s taking the case on, but she has to play by her rules now that she’s in DC. The problem is, Olivia is not on good terms with Mellie, who can get the case seen by the supreme court without a problem. Olivia tries her luck with Fitz because you know his post-presidency work with the Fitzgerald Institute is about prison reform. He’s cold and distant, rightfully so. But Liv humbles herself and explains what she’s doing, and he gives her a much-needed pep talk and gets them a meeting with Mellie. Now its Annalise, Olivia, Fitz, Michaela and Marcus meeting at the oval office. It’s cute to see Annalise’s excitement to be at the White House for the first time, but of course, she gets down to business. Unfortunately, Mellie decides to pass on the case because it would be a headache to pass it to the Supreme Court. It’s a huge case, judges resigning, there’s politics involved, and ain’t nobody willing to make time for that. Liv speaks to Mellie privately and asks her if she’s doing this just to spite her. Mellie says that she’s not shutting it down completely, but she wants to hold off for now. Liv accepts the challenge and tells her she’s going to get this case to the supreme court with or without her. Mellie tells her that she only took the meeting as a favor to Fitz and, if she does go around her then Liv will find herself an adversary of the White House vs. her current standing, which is that the public still views her favorable because they don’t know all that she did. Liv reminds her that this wouldn’t be her first time at the rodeo. Game on. And it is going to be a major battle. via GIPHY First, Jake gets Quinn to urge the gladiators to find dirt that can discredit judges and keep the case out of the Supreme Court by blackmail. Meanwhile, Annalise expresses disappointment in Liv. But instead of just owning up to her mistakes, Liv makes Annalise think that Mellie isn’t sold on the case because of her past. This is the start of their frenemy tension and they continue to bump heads as they reconvene and figure out the next steps, and you know they both have sharp tongues. Michaela and Marcus are the only ones keeping them kind of level-headed for now. At some point, Annalise asks Olivia where she can get her hair done and they end up at the beauty where they’re bonding at first, but their #BlackGirlJoy is stolen swiftly by a news story about how “sources” are saying that Olivia is only taking the case as a vendetta against Mellie because contrary to popular belief, she didn’t leave the White House on Good terms. This item is obviously a plant by the ops and the jig is up for Olivia. Liv asks the stylists to leave so they can talk and it gets ugly again. Annalise reads Olivia for filth for judging her and for thinking she’s better than her (since she grew up privileged), and says she’s no different than the racist white people she has to deal with in the courtroom. Then Liv gets her turn to berate Annalise. She calls her pathetic and broke. Lordt. Basically, they’re frenemies again and this is kind of serving jigaboos vs. wannabes from School Daze . Olivia visits Quinn and tries to talk sense into her because Quinn really does what justice for people. Olivia reminds her that it’s important that she put her negative feelings toward her aside. Quinn plays hardball, but you know she’ll come around. And through all of this, Olivia feels defeated, but it’s Fitz who talks her off the ledge and reminds her who she used to be, who she still is at her core. via GIPHY Then Charlie gives Quinn dirt on Spivey, one of the Supreme Court judges, but hold that thought. Olivia’s next line of offense is a media tour. She has been appearing on various outlets with Annalise to talk about the case and she admits in an interview that she was fired by Mellie Grant without admitting that she’s a criminal. The admission is part of Olivia’s philosophy, which Annalise reminded her of, that the truth can be your greatest weapon. And it is. Unfortunately for them, Marcus delivers the news that Spivey won’t hear the case. Olivia apologizes Annalise but keeps up the good fight and luckily for her, Quinn is thinking about the 90 inmates who didn’t get a fair trial. She shows up at Olivia’s place and hands her an envelope. The envelope contains the dirt. Basically, Spivey’s son killed someone in a hit and run years ago and Spivey paid off the witness to not speak about it. This means that the White House can control him with this secret. However, the witness Spivey paid off died two years ago so there’s still a chance to salvage this. Olivia pays him a visit, hands him the envelope, and encourages him to do the right thing. She’s not even trying to blackmail him here but she urges him to think about how he would feel if his son would have gone to trial. He would have wanted him to get the best representation. Those 90 people deserved that too. Victory! The Supreme Court got the case on the docket. Now that Olivia got Annalise what she wanted, they could part ways but they lowkey like each other and decide that they want to keep working on this together. via GIPHY And then we get into the How to Get Away With Murder portion of this. Annalise’s kids are headed to DC because they’re obviously super excited about this. Olivia and Annalise are hard at work on the case because they fight to win but there’s always a hater lurking in the shadows fighting harder. In this case, that would be Ingrid Egan, the opposing lawyer. She has been doing interviews talking reckless about Annalise and Olivia. She brings up their shady reputations and claims that they’re doing this case as a distraction, but it only ends up working in their favor and they even get offers of help from lawyers from the ACLU. Annalise denies the help, but Liv points out that if she loses this case it will set criminal justice reform back decades. Duh! And it’s important to mention that Nate’s father is the face of the case so he’s going to DC. Pressure. Lots and lots of pressure. via GIPHY Back in Philly, Frank tells Bonnie that Laurel’s mom told him that she paid Wes $100K to stay away from Laurel and he took the money. But, Frank says he can’t find electronic proof of the money. Hold that thought. Michaela and Marcus finally end up getting it on. The chemistry between them has been undeniable, and at the trial, Connor, Oliver, and Laurel pick up on it and question her about what she did. She tells the truth but begs them not to tell Asher because it will destroy him. Connor can’t promise that he won’t because he’s feeling salty that Michaela took this case from her. Plus, all these people are messy so it’s going to come out at some point, but this ain’t the episode for that. via GIPHY Annalise then gets a call from a blocked number. It’s Jacqueline (Isaac’s wife). It turns out that he overdosed, but he’s not dead, but his kidneys are failing and Jacqueline blames Annalise. Jacqueline tells Annalise that she ruined him just like she ruins everyone on her life and that is a major trigger. This is why we don’t answer blocked numbers. via GIPHY Annalise is in the bathroom crying and freaked but Olivia gives her a Pope-style pep talk and gets her back in the game. Annalise gets down to business in the courtroom but the judges play hardball and aren’t feeling Nate’s father as the face of the case. As far as one judge, in particular, is concerned, Nate’s pops is just a criminal and not a victim. And then the judge gets really annoyed when Annalise says that race is a factor in this case. Statistics show that black and brown people are policed heavier and receive longer sentences for the same crimes as their white counterparts. When Annalise’s facts don’t work and the judge is close to dismissing her, Annalise asks for a break so that she can get herself together, and has Michaela research a specific case. It turns out that the case was a case based on race tried by the judge who was antagonizing her. Basically, his words in that particular case is that race can be an issue in certain legal situations because the legal system was not built in favor of certain people. Annalise uses these words against the judge, who even forgot that those were his words, and things start to look up as the other justices challenge him. Everyone on Annalise’s team, including Olivia looks proud. Back in Philly, we discover that Frank went digging to find the cash and finds a hard drive instead. It contains audio of a convo between Wes and Laurel’s mom that proves Laurel’s mom is lying to her. Finally, Olivia tells Annalise that she got a call from President Grant who says that the case might swing in their favor. Annalise says she’ll believe it when she sees it in writing and they part ways, but we all hope they keep in touch because they ended up bringing out the best in each other once they got through all the BS. But the bad news is also not far behind. Annalise gets another call, and it’s from Bonnie. Simon is awake. They all better pray that he has amnesia. See you next week! Though Rob Kardashian is always happy to post adorable photos of North and Dream , he is personally camera-shy and spent years more or less hiding from his family's spotlight. A huge factor was his weight gain. He's been honest about it, but the body-shaming that he's received has been inexcusable. Khloe opens up about that and more in this clip from Revenge Body , which you can see below. In the Revenge Body clip that you can watch below, Khloe offers counseling to a married couple named Chad and Allison. Allison laments being heavier than she would like — describing “worrying about” being 200 pounds when she and Chad were dating and now “worrying about” being 300 pounds as a married woman. She believes that her current weight presents health risks, and that it would be unsafe to become pregnant with her current figure. (We don't know the exact date when this was taped, but in real life, Khloe just did her gender reveal , and is of course pregnant. And she probably knew that she was pregnant at this time. Her facial expression is interesting) Chad, interestingly, also has body image issues. He believes that he is too scrawny. While the issues that Allison laments are somewhat more common, there is a stigma — arising from toxic masculinity — against thin or scrawny men, even though many people find their body type to be desirable or even ideal. Khloe first addresses Allison's desire to lose weight and her complicated relationship with her body and figure. “I know how you feel.” That's an interesting claim, since Khloe — though she was once less fit than she currently is — has never been what could honestly be described as “fat.” “You feel, like, trapped in your own body.” Before anyone assumes that Khloe is trying to say that her past issues compare to Allison's, however, Khloe explains why she knows how Allison feels. “I feel that way for my brother.” Khloe continues, discussing Rob Kardashian as an example. “Who, you know, gained a lot of weight. It's debilitating.” Rob Kardashian did famously gain a lot of weight and spent years in seclusion, rarely venturing into the public eye. He was so self-conscious about his weight gain — which he has blamed on a milkshake habit that snowballed into other unhealthy habits — that he skipped out on Kim Kardashians's 2014 wedding. He just did not feel comfortable in his own skin. Khloe has previously encouraged him to work out with her and with Tristan. Khloe, of course, gets up at like 6am every single day of her life so that she can start her day with a workout. Khloe also extends her sympathies to Chad. “And I think that people sympathize enough when people are body-shamed for being too thin.” It sounded like a lot of Chad's issues with his body were in his own mind — again, a product of toxic masculinity that pernicously seeps into men's minds. But body-shamed or not, if he wants his body to be a different way, he's welcome to pursue change. Khloe continues: “My sister Kendall … When she was growing up, she was very skinny. She used to get bullied all of the time for being 'too skinny.'” To be fair, Kendall is a very slender woman even as an adult. But she's also hot for a living — she's a model. Some could argue that she's skinny for a living , even. While Chad's body type likely presents zero health risks whatsoever, if he wants to live out his beefcake dreams (or just put on a little more muscle), good for him. Khloe can likely connect more with Allison, even though Allison's weight loss goals are a bit heftier than Khloe's have ever been. Different people, based upon genetics and body types and personal histories, will have more or less difficulty gaining or losing weight. It's important to realize that body-shaming, since even a literal supermodel like Kendall Jenner can be on the receiving end of it, is never about the recipient. It's always about the bully. If a guy like Chad has been body-shamed for being slender, it's because someone wanted to ruin his day because of their own issues. Allison, just like Rob Kardashian, should not be shamed for being overweight, and not just because she's working to change it. We spent this weekend binge-watching a thrilling new series on Netflix called “Seven Seconds” which follows the family of Brenton Butler in their struggle or justice after a white cop accidentally hits and critically him. The attempted cover-up and its aftermath, which include extreme racial tension and the trial of the century… From creator and executive producer, Veena Sud (The Killing) comes Seven Seconds – a thrilling new anthological crime drama that explores the human stories behind the headlines. Watch the trailer below: What did you think? We had the chance to talk to one of the show’s stars, Russell Hornsby, who plays Brenton’s father Isaiah Butler. Seven Seconds BOSSIP: How is “Seven Seconds” different from so many of the headlines we see typically about white cops killing black kids? Russell Hornsby: This not your typical drama. The story has been ripped from the headlines in terms of a black teen who is slain by a white police officer, but normally you never really get to see what happens to the family. This kind of rips the curtain off and shows what happens once the cameras go away. Specifically in our storyline, what happens to the family, how they were affected, what happens to the parents, what happens to them as a couple as husband and wife, and probably more importantly what we haven’t taken note of, is what happens to black men… What happens to the husband. What happens to the father. I think oftentimes we’ve seen these stories through the lens of the mother, and rightfully so. I just think we’re at a time where there are fathers are there, there are fathers who did raise their sons and there are fathers who are affected by the tragic death of their child. For the first time, we’re able to see how this tragedy of how this affects the man who is given the duty of providing and protecting. When the notion of being able to provide is taken from you and being able to protect is taken from you, how does that affect you internally? And subsequently, how does that affect your relationships? Seven Seconds BOSSIP: Tell us about working with Regina King and the rest of the cast? Russell Hornsby: When you’re talking about the type of storyline, the type of drama, you need high-caliber actors with some gravitas, you need the kind of actors who understand the drama and the tragedy. These kind of characters aren’t for the faint. So you need people, actors that can go to a depth that isn’t usual. I think what we have with the cast, with Regina, with Clare-Hope and Michael Mosely and David Lyons, are those type of actors. Actors with immense talent and immense compassion. You have to really delve in deep and feel, be a feeling person and humanitarian to really feel that role and the actors on this project have that. BOSSIP: What kind of research did you have to do for this role? RH: Being a black man, you don’t have to go far for research. You can look at your life, look at the lives of people around you . I had to go a little bit deeper into my own life. Being a father of two I had to go deeper into the notion that I have to protect my children, I have to keep my children alive. What you realize seeing death by the hand of police or the hand of others, with no impunity you’re in a sense helpless. That’s a scary notion to realize that ultimately in this country, we’re in a sense at times defenseless. Seven Seconds BOSSIP: What do you think about the current state of race in the U.S.? RH: It’s new plateaus. Obviously, we’re further than we were 100 years ago or 200 years ago and we’ve progressed from where we were 50 years ago but we have a long way to go. There are new plateaus because of what we’re dealing with as a society when we’re talking about teenagers can be killed without recourse, black people can be killed without recourse. There’s still no justice. I don’t think it’s gotten better, I think it’s just changed. It’s also relative. We’re dealing in Jim Crow but we’re still dealing with an undercurrent of racsim that’s subtle. Some would say that’s worse. Also when we’re talking economic disparities, educational disparities that affect black people more disproportionately. There are more opportunities but they’re still just opportunities for some. I think you can’t say just because some people are able to go to school or some people are able to look at a job you can’t say, “Well why can’t you do that?” I think we lose sight of that, even as black people. It’s not that simple. There is a such thing as discrimination. There is a such thing as social injustice and these things affect our community. BOSSIP: What’s next for you? RH: I have a film coming up that I shot in Atlanta this fall called “The Hate U Give” based on the Y.A. novel of the same name by Angie Thomas. It was number one on the New York Times bestseller list basicaly for the last year, 45 weeks. I’m looking for that coming out some time in th efall. Myself, Regina Hall, Amandla Stenberg, Anthony Mackie, Issa Rae, Common. It’s a really great book we had a wonderful time making it. A turned into a wonderful script. I think it’s going to make a lot of noise and really impact audiences.
