And while we’ve never seen Breezy do drugs, we all know what a crackhead looks like so it makes sense that Billboard just did a pretty eye-opening investigative piece on Brown and his downward spiral over the last several years. The most horrific detail we read was probably about the May 10,2016 alleged incident with Brown’s manager Mike Guirguis, where the magazine details how Guirguis arrived at a rehearsal at Showbiz Studios in Van Nuys, CA, to discuss Brown’s One Hell of a Nite Tour. Putting together details from a lawsuit Guirguis has filed Billboard reports how Brown led him to a private room and said: “We are going to go for 30 seconds” — fight, that is. Guirguis turned away to leave, but, the suit alleges, Brown smashed him in the face with his fist. As he fell backward, Brown punched him three more times in the face, jaw and neck. Guirguis was stunned. He briskly left the studio and took an Uber to an emergency room. He quit that day. “Mike G was and is scared,” the suit reads, “not just for his own safety from Brown and Brown’s gang member friends, but also for the safety of others.” Brown, according to a close creative collaborator at the time, “was ticked off” because Royalty had underperformed compared with his previous albums. (It’s his poorest-selling solo release, having moved just 366,000 copies in the United States.) “He sets himself up in situations where he can’t lose,” says another former core team member from that time. “Like, ‘I am so angry at myself, and I can beat up on [Guirguis] because I’m surrounded by people whom I pay to protect me. From her support to the civil rights movement in the 1960s to her involvement with several feminists causes to, let’s be real, her iconic workout videos, she’s been an inspiration to many. And in this new interview with the also amazing Brie Larson , Jane is really just taking our appreciation of her to an entire new level. Jane, who turns 80 this year, kicked things off by giving some real talk about feminism — particularly about the struggles of growing up as a woman so many years ago. “I grew up in the ’50s,” she explains, “and it took me a long time to apply feminism to my life. The men in my life were wonderful, but victims of a [patriarchal] belief system. I felt diminished.” She says that the first time she truly felt she was a feminist was when she saw Eve Ensler do a performance of The Vagina Monologues — which would have been in the mid 90s at the earliest. “It took a long time” for her to call herself a feminist though, “because I was brought up with the disease to please.” She went on to say, and this is where things really take an intense turn, that “To show you the extent to which a patriarchy takes a toll on females; I’ve been raped, I’ve been sexually abused as a child and I’ve been fired because I wouldn’t sleep with my boss and I always thought it was my fault.” “That I didn’t do or say the right thing.” “I know young girls,” she says, “who’ve been raped and didn’t even know it was rape. They think, ‘It must have been because I said ‘no’ the wrong way.'” “One of the great things the women’s movement has done is to make us realize that [rape and abuse] is not our fault. We were violated and it’s not right.” This is the first time Jane’s ever publicly said that she’s been raped — after so many years of speaking up for women’s rights , it must have taken a lot for her to share this. It’s not the only thing she shared though. She also discussed her controversial opposition to the Vietnam War. “I didn’t become an activist until I was 31,” she says. “When I found out what was really happening in Vietnam I didn’t care if I ever worked again; I considered leaving the business to become a full-time activist.” She recalls that “My father was terrified for me. He remembered the ’50s when people’s careers were destroyed.” Jane even adds that, with Trump as president, “It’s possible the [Hollywood] blacklist will be brought back.” And on the topic of Trump, she says that there are many battles to be fought, including but certainly not limited to the fight against defunding Planned Parenthood . Casey Affleck has finally spoken out about the sexual harassment charges that have plagued him for months. For years , really, but these allegations have especially come to the forefront for the actor ever since the release (and subsequent critical acclaim) of his latest film, Manchester by the Sea. Affleck, of course, was awarded with the Best Actor trophy for his role in this drama on Sunday night at the Oscars. About seven years ago, however, two women who worked with Affleck on the movie I’m Still Here filed separate lawsuits, both of which accused him of “uninvited and unwelcome sexual advances in the workplace.” Affleck denied the allegations and both cases were settled out of court. In a statement made at the time, a spokesperson for the star said the dispute had “been resolved to the mutual satisfaction of the parties and the lawsuits are being dismissed.” But questions have remained. Many folks have been uncomfortable with the recognition (in the form of positive press and many awards) Affleck has received in the wake of his Manchester by the Sea performance. Brie Larson, for example, presented Affleck with the Academy Award this week… … and then stood around on stage, refusing to clap for him . Affleck has remained entirely silent on this controversial topic ever since the allegations returned to the spotlight last year. But he finally addressed them in a post-Oscars interview with The Boston Globe. This is what he said: I believe that any kind of mistreatment of anyone for any reason is unacceptable and abhorrent, and everyone deserves to be treated with respect in the workplace and anywhere else. There’s really nothing I can do about it. Other than live my life the way I know I live it and to speak to what my own values are and how I try to live by them all the time. The only other time Affleck addressed these charges was in a chat with The New York Times several months ago. He made the same sort of general, mostly meaningless statement in early November, too. “It was settled to the satisfaction of all,” he told the paper, adding: “I was hurt and upset – I am sure all were – but I am over it. It was an unfortunate situation – mostly for the innocent bystanders of the families of those involved.” Affleck has said that the terms of his settlement with the alleged victims prohibit him from speaking in detail about the lawsuits. Which is fair. But he might as well have saved himself a few words and simply released a shrug emoji as his statement in these cases. That would have said just as much, really.
