Winamp Shut Down After 16 Years; Tech Community Mourns MP3 Player of Yore

It’s the end of an era. The pioneering desktop MP3 player Winamp, which so many of us grew up playing illegally downloaded tunes on, will soon be no more. Yes, it is actually still in existence. But won’t be as of December 20. In a world dominated by iTunes, “the first reaction to Winamp’s closure might be surprise that it still exists in the first place,” says the Wall Street Journal. That it does. AOL acquired it in 1999, just two years after its creation, and when it was as hot as it gets, with its $80 million purchase of Nullsoft. The AOL subsidiary has even continued tending to the once-venerable MP3 player, releasing updates and versions for Mac OSX and Android. Winamp made its announcement as it released its latest, and last, update to Windows. This and other versions will still work after December 20, AOL said. However, “Winamp.com and associated web services will no longer be available” and “Winamp Media players will no longer be available for download.” šŸ™ Winamp became a ubiquitous piece of software when Napster exploded onto the scene in the late 1990s. Once you got your music, that’s what played it. As popular as it was then, it’s that scarce now. The general consensus among fans today is that they didn’t know it was still around. Not shocking, as AOL essentially killed the player a long time ago. When AOL bought Winamp and music-streaming service Spinner, it aspired to be really big in music, and create within its four walls the next MTV. But when AOL threw the two companies together, putting Spinner in charge, the lack of guidance and resulting culture clash handicapped both. Between 2002 and 2007, Winamp was an asset that “AOL knew was valuable but didn’t know what the f–k to do with,” according to one insider. AOL made matters worse by insisting that the entities be subservient to AOL’s email-internet-portal service – not popular with Winamp’s base of fans. Apple’s iPod and iTunes were the final straw. R.I.P. Winamp. R.I.P.

Alec Baldwin: I’ve Been in Love With Men! (But I’m Still Not Gay)

Not only Alec Baldwin support gay rights, he has been in love with men himself, he said at the Dreamforce tech conference in San Francisco this week. In the wake of his recent homophobic slurs , the actor went out of his way to show that he’s not anti-gay. On the contrary, in fact. He loves his lawyer. Alec Baldwin Loves Men At one point during the conference, Baldwin called out his attorney, Matt, who he told, in a joking manner, that “I love you. I love you in THAT WAY.” Baldwin then turned serious, saying ” I’ve loved men in my life . There are some men I’ve loved in my life as much, if not more, than the women in my life.” “I don’t have a sexual preference for men, but I’ve loved men. I’ve been in love with about 3 or 4 men … as much, if not more, than any woman I’ve loved.” He then added, “I don’t wanna have a sexual relationship with them.” Fair enough, Alec. Now we just gotta work on your rage issues …

Rihanna Twerk Video of the Day

6 days ago, Rihanna’s homie who followed her around on tour, posted a hotel room video of them twerking to celebrate the end of her diamond tour, where she probably made a solid 100,000,000 dollars, and Rihanna’s part was pretty fucking sold…it may be an older story, but I am a grown ass man and can’t really devote my life keeping tabs on Rihanna’s ass jiggle, even if I like it a lot…and I’m glad it happened… HEre are the OG instagrams.

Sylvia Browne Dies; Renowned Psychic Was 77

Sylvia Browne, a renowned psychic, leader in the paranormal world and best-selling author, passed away at the age of 77 in California on Wednesday. A believer in reincarnation as well as God, Browne conducted thousands of hypnotic regressions and trance sessions with people around the world. “I don’t know how I do it,” Browne once told CNN , “I’ve done it all my life.” She also appeared on Unsolved Mysteries, Loveline with Dr. Drew and The Montel Williams Show , on which she was a weekly guest for 17 years. “I, like so many of you, lost a friend today,” Williams said yesterday. “But, as has been for the last 20 years, she’ll always remain a part of me.” Browne first became aware of her psychic abilities at age 3, her bio says. It was a “very scary thing” for her when she realized as a youngster she could tell if someone was going to die, she told Larry King back in 2000. “The only thing, I think, that saved my sanity was that there are so many – well, we can track our lineage back to 300 years – of psychics,” she said. She strove to help “thousands of people gain control of their lives, live more happily, understand the meaning of life and to find God in their unique way.” She founded The Nirvana Foundation for Psychic Research in 1974, and went on to publish more than 50 books, 22 of which were best sellers. Browne also worked with the Society of Novus Spiritus organization, and created The Sylvia Browne Hypnosis Training Center to teach her hypnosis methods. Browne’s Facebook page includes a September 10 posting stating, “If you are afraid to die, you will not fully live.” Her final post, on October 27, reads: “My one prayer every morning that has carried me is, ‘Hi God, it’s me again.’ Her website does not give a cause, but does say that Browne died at 7:10 a.m. Wednesday at Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose, California.

Justin Bieber on Critics: I Don’t Give a F-ck!

Justin Bieber has come under fire for a run of strange, pretty terrible behavior. He allegedly spit in his neighbor’s face last year. He definitely peed in a mop bucket . And he likely had sex this month with a porn star named Tati Neves . Bieber is aware of the criticism, but he makes his opinion on the haters very well known in the latest issue of The Hollywood Reporter. “I don’t give a f-ck,” he tells the publication. “I don’t give a f-ck what they say.” The artist isn’t lacking for self-confidence, either. ā€œI know who I am and what I’m doing in my life and what I’ve accomplished and continue to accomplish as a performer, as a writer, as an artist, as a person, as a human being,” he says. “I’m happy with the man I’m becoming.ā€ Manager and close friend Scooter Braun is featured alongside Bieber in the issue and says no one in the team’s entourage is worried about the star. “Say whatever the f-ck you want,” Braun tells critics. “Justin’s not going to go crazy. He’s not going to end up in rehab. He’s not going to end up a statistic. Nine months ago, they said he lost his mind – he hasn’t missed a show since. So we’re just going to shut up.ā€ Bieber adds that he’s grown to have a number of trust issues due to stories leaking out and is only really leaning on Braun and his parents these days. As for his professional role models? ā€œI’m very influenced by black culture, but I don’t think of it as black or white,ā€ says Bieber. ā€œIt’s not me trying to act or pose in a certain way. It’s a lifestyle – like a suaveness or a swag, per se. But I don’t really like to say the word [‘swag’] anymore. It’s kind of played out.ā€ Does Bieber feel any kind of pressure when it comes to his career? Not at all. The guy is only 19 years old, remember. ā€œMichael Jackson didn’t do Off the Wall until he was about 23,ā€ Justin says of late performer’s 1979 breakout album. ā€œBad, not until he was, like, 25 [Jackson was 29]. I have all the time in the world.ā€

Chris Brown and Karrueche Tran: Reunited After Rehab Release!

Chris Brown and girlfriend Karrueche Tran are still a thing. The singer has already reunited with his on-off-on-off-on lady love since his release from rehab. Chris Brown, Karrueche Tran Reunite! The duo were spotted at Jhene Aiko’s EP release event at Space 15 Twenty in Hollywood, with Chris described as ” happy but quiet ” for most of the night. If you recall, Chris Brown is out of rehab but continuing his anger management treatment on an outpatient basis, according to the R&B singer’s rep. Karrueche Tran , who has dutifully stood by her man before, during and after the rehab stint, made rounds at the party and was more outgoing than Chris. After the event, the couple went to dinner at Aventine, after which cameras saw Chris kissing Karrueche before the two headed their separate ways. On October 29, Chris sought to ā€œgain focus and insight into his [behavior], enabling him to continue the pursuit of his life and career from a healthier vantage point.” Chris Brown Out of Rehab, Still in Treatment It was rumored that he would stay in the Malibu facility where he sought help for months, though that obviously didn’t happen. He’s out after three weeks. Regardless of what good it did or didn’t do, the 24-year-old’s rehab stint follows the star’s arrest for assault in front of the W Hotel in Washington D.C. Brown and his bodyguard were taken into custody, though the case is pending and may still fall apart due to conflicting witness accounts and lack of evidence. The real problem is his probation for his 2009 assault on then girlfriend Rihanna, as he could have that revoked regardless of whether he’s convicted. Speaking of Chris’ ex … Rihanna and Drake are like totally a thing now. Hope that doesn’t set him off. Which begs the question: Is Chris a changed man? Ā  Totally! Team Breezy FTW! This is a joke, right? View Poll Ā»
