From print, to television to social media and beyond, the King Bey takeover is coming on strong no matter how many seats people tell her to have. Keeping with that theme, Mrs. Carter recently sat down with GQ magazine to talk mother hood, “needing” her fame, and freedom to do whatever the fawk she wants. Check out a few interview excerpts below: On giving birth and needing her job: “I love my job, but it’s more than that: I need it,” she said. “Because before I gave birth, it was the only time in my life, all throughout my life, that I was lost.” On having the freedom to do what she wants: “I worked so hard during my childhood to meet this goal: By the time I was 30 years old, I could do what I want. “I’ve reached that. I feel very fortunate to be in that position. But I’ve sacrificed a lot of things, and I’ve worked harder than probably anyone I know, at least in the music industry. So I just have to remind myself that I deserve it.” On who she’s working with for her upcoming album: “I’ve been working with Pharrell and Timbaland and Justin Timberlake and Dream. This is absolutely ghetto craziness. This is a two day brawl and parents were seen, “waiting for action”: Wild cellphone videos captured by students show a crowd of as many as 60 students and parents brawling in the streets of Swissvale, Pa. on Monday and again on Tuesday. The two brawls took place at the same school bus stop in Swissvale, prompting police to increase patrols in the area. “I’d consider it a riot,” Swissvale Police Chief Greg Geppert said, adding that it was disturbing that the fights involved both students and adults. “We have the video. Anyone who’s viewed on that video as being involved, I’ll guarantee you they’re getting arrested,” Geppert added. Police say they have already arrested five adults and minors and may arrest nearly a dozen more soon. The students and parents were reportedly from the Woodland Hills School district, CBS Pittsburgh reports. Investigators believe the fights were planned because several people were seen “waiting for action” with cellphone cameras out. WTAE-TV provides some footage of the fights: One female witness described the mayhem to WTAE-TV: “The boys started taking their sweatshirts off, and the backpacks were thrown in the snow, and they went at it on my car, on the ground, in the snow,” said a woman who was driving through the area with her preschool-age child. “They were swinging at each other, and some of them landed on my car and just were continuing fighting while I was honking and I was screaming and I was trying to get them away.” “At one point in the first video, there are as many as five fights going on at a time. One fight moved into traffic while cars attempted to drive around two men punching each other,” WTAE-TV reports. “The second video showed a man in red pants walking toward another man who was trying to crawl up a hillside. The man on the ground was kicked in the head, sending him rolling backward down the hill,” the report adds. Woodland Hills School Superintendent called the brawls “appalling” and said she has been “very disappoints” per the incident. She said any students involved in the fights will be suspended and possibly expelled from school. But some people who witnessed the brawls in the neighborhood claim they are afraid to walk down the street now. “I’m afraid for my life. I won’t go for a walk anymore,” one woman said. WTAE KDKA
Les Misérables director Tom Hooper may have been bypassed with a nomination Wednesday by the British Film Academy for Best Director (though the film itself received nine nominations), but at the Palm Springs International Film Festival this week, he received the event’s Sonny Bono Visionary Award at a celeb-filled event that included Naomi Watts, Bradley Cooper, Helen Mirren, Sally Field and Ben Affleck. At the festival, Hooper talked about the creation of Les Misérables , why the story made him cry and the “dark box” Anne Hathaway traveled to as she took on the role of Fantine. The Victor Hugo novel had been on Hooper’s mind even before The King’s Speech won Best Film and Best Director two years ago, saying he hoped the emotional impact he experienced with audiences on that film would translate in his next feature. “I was overwhelmed with how much emotion The King’s Speech was greeted with when I traveled with it around the world and I wanted to find material that would keep that emotion going and even take it further and Les Misérables is famous for creating that feel,” said Hooper. “And I thought it would be possible to make it a more intense emotional experience for the audience.” Hooper, who spoke with Deadlin.com’s Pete Hammond following a screening of the film at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, showed his lighter side before a full audience, saying that he had wept after first seeing Les Misérables after seeing the lead character, Jean Valjean (played in the on-screen version by Hugh Jackman) die. “I was weeping and I thought about why I was weeping,” said Hooper. “And it was because I thought about the day my own father will die. And then I thought about something my own father said to me, which was that he said as he gets older he wants to master ‘the art of dying well.’ Continuing he added, “I really thought about that and thought about that last act of grace. This film really does look death square in the face. For Jean Val Jean, it’s all about love…And he dies having done the ultimate obligation of finding love for her and in that moment we feel he has transcended death and that’s the ultimate message of the movie.” Hooper said he auditioned every actor in the film from “Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe on down” because he was committed to doing Les Misérables live. He praised Jackman’s ability to “communicate through song,” which Hooper said was magical. “The Hugh Jackman audition took place last May in New York and it was an extraordinary three hours,” said Hooper. “When Hugh sings, he’s so comfortable communicating through song that you don’t want to hear him speak. Hearing him sing was the best place to be… The other thing I noticed was that Hugh had an emotional side to himself that I had never seen before.” Hooper said he wanted Les Misérables sung live to allow his actors leeway to own their characters and their emotions, adding that the decision was important in portraying the feature’s characters. “Great acting is about being in control of the medium at the time. Because great acting is about you being the author or creator of the dialog or songs you were given to play and to sell that illusion you’re inventing and the joy of doing it live allows you create the moment of invention.” Hooper noted Anne Hathaway’s lauded performance in the seminal number, “I Dreamed A Dream” as an example of how the live performance gave Hathaway, in this case, flexibility. “In ‘I Dreamed A Dream,’ Annie sings and then there’s a long pause, and then says, ‘But it all went wrong.’ In that pause, she’s communicating everything that happened to her: How she’s been raped, how she had her hair cut and everything that’s gone wrong with her life. In musical terms that should have been a moment, but Annie takes ten seconds and earns that moment.” Hooper noted that Hathaway told him after performing the song that she had mentally traveled to a dark space, saying the actress said, “Tom I opened the lid of a box I lived inside and closed that lid and I hope I never go inside that box again.” [ Tom Hooper and actor Eddie Redmayne at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. We still have nearly a year to go until Catching Fire hits the theaters, but Hunger Games fans are in for a thrill this week: The latest issue of Entertainment Weekly features Jennifer Lawrence on the cover as Katniss Everdeen – and also Sam Claflin as Finnick Odair! It’s our first look at this British actor in the key role: Claflin tells the magazine that he was petrified to film the infamous scene in which Finnick interacts with Katniss while donning nothing but strategically placed netting, explaining: It was “the scariest moment of my life. I’m on Twitter and so many people have been like ‘Don’t mess this up, or we will kill you.’” Considering the rising star is still alive – and in the running to play Four in Divergent – it’s safe to assume he nailed the role. Remember a couple of days ago, when we saw what purported to be the perfect Batman , a composite photo created from all the actors who have played Batman onscreen (we assume he’d sound like Kevin Conroy)? Not to be outdone by the combination of multiple, independently wealthy superheroes, an enterprising person has done the same for Britain’s top wetwork operative, James Bond . The ‘perfect’ 007 is something of a creepy masterpiece, possessing as it does all the finest qualities of the actors who have infused Britain’s top spy with their smarmy essences. The bad toupee and suit of Sean Connery ! The bedroom eyes and soft cheeks of Pierce Brosnan ! The radar ears and, presumably, bad career decisions of George Lazenby ! The poncy elegance and eyebrows of Roger Moore ! The fiercely lined cheeks of Timothy Dalton ! And of course, the… stunning abs??? of Daniel Craig . I can’t for the life of me find Daniel Craig in this. Any of you readers care to wager a guess as to where he’s hiding? I mean, besides Eve Moneypenny’s bedroom, of course. This truly is a thing of beauty, but I have to be honest: the composite image looks less like the ideal James Bond and more like James Bond after he’s retired from MI6 and has been elected to Parliament from the borough of Brothel-Upon-Liquor Store. As played, of course, by early 1980s Richard Burton — or a younger, less jowly version of Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly. ( Check it out .) After a producer for CBS’s 48 Hours threatened to write a screenplay about the host’s infidelities unless Letterman paid him $2 million, he went to the police. Robert Halderman was arrested, but Letterman’s dirty laundry was aired; he publicly confessed to affairs with Late Show interns in an on-air monologue.
