From Taylor Swift’s major-category shutout to the army of collaborators on Kanye’s ‘All of the Lights,’ we take a closer look at this year’s nods. By Gil Kaufman Kanye West Photo: Flanigan/ Getty Images The big headline out of Wednesday night’s “Grammy Nominations Concert Live!!” event was that Kanye West came away with the night’s gaudiest number at seven nods. He bested heavily tipped Grammy bait Adele , who scored six, tying her with veteran rockers Foo Fighters and Bruno Mars , with Lil Wayne and party-starting DJ Skrillex just behind at five. Yes, there were some surprises, such as Justin Vernon’s sedate folkie solo project Bon Iver snagging four nominations and British tweed revivalists Mumford & Sons rolling up an equal amount. But it’s some of the other facts and figures we were more interested in. So enjoy the 2011 Grammy nominations, by the numbers: 0 : Number of major nominations scored by Taylor Swift for her smash Speak Now album. She did pull down three nods for Best Country Album and Best Country Song and Best Country Solo Performance for “Mean.” 4 : Grammy nominations for the coaches from NBC reality singing show “The Voice,” Cee Lo Green, Blake Shelton, Christina Aguilera and Adam Levine. 0 : Grammy nods for the judges (Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Scherzinger) on “American Idol” and “The X Factor.” 6 : Age Rihanna was in 1994 when the first Foo Fighters album was released. RiRi is up against the veteran rockers in the Album of the Year category, where Dave Grohl (42) and company are the elder statesmen in a race where none of the competition cross the three-decade mark: Bruno Mars (26), Adele (23) and Lady Gaga (25). Think Beyonc
We take a look at the surprises — and outright outrages — of the Grammy nominations, in Bigger Than the Sound. By James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: Leon Neal/AFP Here’s about all you need to know about the nominations for the 54th Grammy Awards , which were announced Wednesday night in Los Angeles: Bon Iver got more of them (4) than Lady Gaga did (3). So did Mumford & Sons, Radiohead and Skrillex. Call it the residual effects of Arcade Fire’s Album of the Year triumph at the previous Grammys or perhaps the first creaks of a seismic shift in voter tastes, but there’s definitely something going on with this year’s field of nominees … it’s just difficult to say exactly what. Because, sure Gaga got shunted. But Kanye didn’t. In fact, he’s this year’s most-nominated artist, collecting seven of them (though his My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, by all accounts a commercial and critical success, failed to pick up an Album of the Year nod) in a move by the Grammy voters that certainly poked a lot of holes in what everyone believed would be the story line of these awards: Namely, that women would dominate, since, you know, they’ve basically done that on the charts all year long. Adele, who you’ve probably heard of (and whose 21 album you probably own), ended up snagging six nods, including Album, Record and Song of the Year. But most expected her to get more, or at least be the most-nominated act. Instead, she’s tied with a bunch of dudes ( Bruno Mars and those old Grammy faves the Foo Fighters) in second. Nicki Minaj ended up with five noms, while Rihanna — who is usually the one left out at these kinds of shows — got four. And then the drop off begins. Taylor Swift, who won Album of the Year not too long ago, and whose Speak Now sold a million copies in a week, was shut out of the so-called “Big Four” categories and ended up with just three nominations total, all of which came in the country categories. Katy Perry, who has three #1 singles to her name this year, earned two noms. So did Beyonc
The 2012 Grammy nominations are in! Kanye West leads the pack with 7 nominations, but the ladies are doing well also, with Rihanna following quickly behind with 6 nods. Adele is up for 5 awards, and Nicki Minaj has the chance at winning 3 statues. Momma-to-be Beyonce is only up for 1 this year, but we’re sure next winter will be different! Gaga opens and closes the show, with an assist from country duo Sugarland. By James Montgomery Lady Gaga opens the “Grammy Nominations Concert Live!!” Photo: Lester Cohen/ WireImage Anyone who has ever seen Lady Gaga is aware that she knows how to work a look. And on Wednesday’s (November 30) “Grammy Nominations Concert Live!!,” she worked two of them, both about as different as could be. As she announced earlier, Gaga served as both the opening and closing act during the telecast, and, of course, those two roles required two totally different sides of the Mother Monster. She started things off with a steampunk -y version of “Marry the Night,” opening the song on a stage littered with smoking pipes and scattered bits of scrap metal. Her face done up like a skeleton (or perhaps Zombie Boy ?), wearing a black cloak, she solemnly sang the song’s opening lines, as a group of gothed-up dancers cavorted around her. Take a closer look at this year’s Grammy nominees through photos! As the beat kicked in, she shed her cloak (revealing a sport coat, matching underwear set and, of course, thigh-high boots) and hit the harmonies hard, while guitars wailed and those dancers posed and popped. Then the whole thing gave way to a particularly fierce dance segment, which brought the performance to a close and earned a standing ovation from the industry-heavy crowd (David Guetta seemed particularly pumped, it should be noted). And after the nominations were revealed, Gaga was back to wrap things up, and she did so in true Grammy style, joined onstage by country duo Sugarland for a husky, musky version of “Yo
Adele, Foo Fighters and Bruno Mars tie for six nods each, just falling short of West’s seven nominations. By Kelley L. Carter Kanye West (file) Photo: Getty Images For the second year in a row, a hip-hop artist is leading the pack in Grammy nominations. Although his name was only called for one category during Wednesday’s (November 30) “Grammy Nominations Concert Live!!,” Kanye West walked away with a leading seven nods, following the hip-hop trend set by last year’s leading nominee, Eminem . He’s nominated for his Watch the Throne joint album with Jay-Z and also picked up a few nominations — including Song of the Year — for his powerhouse collaborative track “All of the Lights,” which features Rihanna, Fergie and Kid Cudi. He’s even nominated against himself, with Watch the Throne and his own My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy nabbing Rap Album of the Year nods. West was followed by this year’s critical darling, Adele , who is tied with the Foo Fighters and Bruno Mars for six nods each. Lil Wayne and dance-music breakout Skrillex each garnered five nods. While the Grammys have a reputation for catering to an older demographic (Robert Plant and Alison Krauss for 2009 Album of the Year, anyone?), this year’s nominees are notably young, with 34-year-old West looking downright geriatric next to fellow nominees Adele (23), Rihanna (23), Lady Gaga (25) and Bruno Mars (26). Take a closer look at this year’s Grammy nominees through photos! The 54th annual Grammys air Sunday, February 12, on CBS. Here are the rest of the nominations: Album of the Year

‘It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I have decided to end my six-year marriage to Ashton,’ Moore says in a statement. By Jocelyn Vena Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore Photo: Getty Images After dodging separation and affair rumors for months now, Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher officially announced plans to divorce Thursday (November 17). “It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I have decided to end my six-year marriage to Ashton,” Moore said in a statement to The Associated Press. “As a woman, a mother and a wife there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred, and it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life. This is a trying time for me and my family, and so I would ask for the same compassion and privacy that you would give to anyone going through a similar situation.” “Two and a Half Men” star Kutcher took to Twitter to confirm the split. “Marriage is one of the most difficult things in the world and unfortunately sometimes they fail. Love and Light, AK,” he wrote on the social networking site. As of press time, Moore’s Twitter handle was still @mrskutcher. The two had no children together but did start the DNA Foundation last year to raise awareness about the sexual exploitation of young women around the world. People magazine reports that in the wake of Kutcher’s affair scandal earlier this fall, the two had been working on their relationship. “Demi loves Ashton as much as she hates public humiliation,” a source told the website around the time the affair rumors broke. “The marriage isn’t good right now.”
“We’re not very good at deciding song names,” Marcus Mumford laughs about tune, which will be called “Ghosts That We Knew” or “Ghosts.” By James Montgomery Marcus Mumford of Mumford & Sons Photo: Gus Stewart/ Getty Images They’ve been working on the follow-up to their breakout (on both sides of the pond) Sigh No More album since early 2011 and have been road-testing new material during a recent run of U.S. summer shows . But now, finally, Mumford & Sons have given fans a proper taste of what they can expect on their upcoming album. The problem is, they can’t seem to settle on a name for the new track. Called either “Ghosts That We Knew” or, simply, “Ghosts” (“We’re not very good at deciding song names,” frontman Marcus Mumford laughed, “we’ll hash it out, we’ll have a physical fight later”), Mumford & Sons unveiled the brand-new song during a performance at Philadelphia station Radio 104.5 . Regardless of the title they settle on, there’s a pretty good chance their fanbase is going to be rather happy. Because, frankly, the song is a stunner, rolling along on a rail of acoustic guitar, banjo and accordion, while Mumford keens about a love destroyed (“You saw no fault/ No cracks in my heart/ And you kneel beside/ My hope torn apart/ But the ghosts that we knew, will flicker from view/ Will live a long life”) and the misguided hope that all can be repaired (“So give me hope in the darkness/ That I will see the light/ Because oh, it gave me such a fright/ But I will hope as long as you like/ Just promise me we’ll be all right”). There’s a hushed majesty to it all, a muted sense of despair and grace, and it finds them building on their Bluegrass roots. Shoot, Mumford even replicates the staggered “I-I-I-I” that helped propel “The Cave” to smash status both here in the States and back home in England. There’s still no official release date for the follow-up to Sigh (it is reportedly set for February), but based on “Ghosts,” that disc can’t come soon enough for Mumford’s fans. Hopefully, they’ll figure out all the song titles by then. What are you expecting from the next Mumford album? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Mumford & Sons
Snooki, Pauly D, Deena and Vinny tease January 5 return to Seaside Heights, including Staten Island star’s (brief) exit from MTV series. By Christina Garibaldi The cast of “Jersey Shore” Photo: MTV “Jersey Shore” fans, start fist-pumping! Along with resolutions and champagne, the New Year promises a whole new season of Seaside fun as the housemates are set to return to New Jersey following their European getaway in Florence, Italy. Season five of the “Shore” premieres on Thursday, January 5, at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Over the summer, the roommates went straight from the cobblestone streets of Italy to the Seaside Heights boardwalk, where shooting for the fifth run of the series took place. And from the sound of things, they brought all of the drama and the fun with them. “All of us became so close,” Deena told MTV News earlier this year of their time in Italy. “So here, it really was like we were brothers and sisters. You get annoyed with each other, then you’re fine. But you’ll see, we had a lot of fun in Jersey; we had so much fun, we were home, we were comfortable.” Snooki teased of their return to Jersey, “We were back home with our friends, we got to see our family and there are parts where we got tired of each other, but overall we had an awesome time together.” “Jersey’s gonna be another good season. I’m excited about that,” Deena added. Of course, summertime at the Jersey Shore can get a bit tiring — just ask Vinny, who left the house during filming on season 5 to steal some alone time. But fear not “Jersey Shore” fans, he does return! “Sometimes people have left in the past for different reasons. Everyone has a different reason for doing it,” Vinny told us. “We do this 24 hours a day and sometimes you just reach a point where you’re like, ‘You know, I need to take a break. I wish can stay straight through, but I need to take a break.’ I got up to that point where I need to take a little break for myself and then recharge a little bit, and when I felt comfortable enough to come back, I did. And everyone trusted in my decision because usually I’m pretty grounded.” While the housemates were understanding, it was hardest on Vinny’s best friend, DJ Pauly D. “We all have our different ways to [deal] with this,” Pauly explained. “Sometimes it’s tough being on camera 24/7 and filming for such a long time. But, like, him and I get along almost like brothers at this point, he’s like my best friend. I feel like I’m his light and he’s my light, so when he left, I felt like I had to get him back because I wanted my light back. But I had to give him his space, almost like a relationship. But he had no choice — I was bringing him back anyway.” Are you excited for season five of “Jersey Shore”? Let us know in the comments!
