When fans hear the words “from the vault” in relation to one of their favorite artists the impulse is to turn up their noses, and with good reason. Historically, projects of unreleased material are usually filled with unfinished or unmixed outtakes that the artist didn’t want to use or were not up to the standard their fans were accustomed to. However, Hidden Beach CEO Steve McKeever insists this is not the case with an up-coming collection from Jill Scott, Just Before Dawn: Jill Scott From the Vault, Vol. 1. Despite reports of a lawsuit between his label and Scott he says the two sides came to a mutual and amicable agreement for her departure. RELATED: Jill Scott’s Sexiest Lyrics “Every family has fights from time to time and the Hidden Beach family is no different. But if you’re family, you come back and figure something out. That’s what we did,” McKeever told Billboard . The R&B star is now signed to Warner Bros records and will be releasing her first album for them The Light Of The Sun this summer. “We are cheering the Warner Bros. record on, but also pleased to have worked jointly with Jill in selecting and compiling music from previous recording sessions that celebrate the greatness of her artistry.” Just Before Dawn includes music from a stream of recording sessions that were intentionally held for future releases. The collection features production from Jazzy Jeff, James Poyser, Dre & Vidal and Scott. The deluxe version of Just Before Dawn will feature a DVD complete with nine music videos and three live performances, including her famed “And I Heard” performance at the House Of Blues in Los Angeles. “Our agreement with Jill to open up the vault and share the treasures inside with her fans is a huge win for music lovers everywhere,” says McKeever. Fans who purchase the first single “Lovely Day” are treated to a mixtape of even more unreleased music. The album can be pre-ordered at Jillscott.com. ‘Twilight’ actor talks about Starz series, premiering Friday (April 1). By Jocelyn Vena Jamie Campbell Bower Photo: MTV News Jamie Campbell Bower has played with wizards and been one evil vampire, but now the British heartthrob is set to play King Arthur. The “Twilight” and “Harry Potter” star is now going to “Camelot,” in the Starz series named after the legendary literary location, which premieres Friday (April 1). Bower stopped by the MTV News offices the day his show premiered to share a big tease that will certainly persuade his admirers to watch: “You are going to see my bum cheeks, which is very nice,” he revealed, adding that he hopes no one will complain, “apart from my grandma.” “You will meet the characters that you know so well, but you will not see them in the same vein that you’ve seen them before. You will meet Arthur, who’s a young boy living a very comfortable existence and then torn from that and taken to Camelot. You will meet Merlin (played by Joseph Fiennes); he doesn’t have a pointy hat or a long white beard or a wand. And you will see the world that the show takes place in.” Bower plays the lead role in which so many thespians before him swung Excalibur. But he says the new show is a much more realistic take on the classic tale. “I suppose, being from England, I’ve grown up around the story most of my life. The Arthur and the Camelot story has been told many times, but I don’t think it’s been told in the same way,” he said. “We’re going for a reality and a humanism.” The story of Arthur and Camelot has been around for centuries, and it seems that, even in 2011, people don’t seem to tire of the classic tale. “I think, underneath it all, there’s that love story between Guinevere (played by Tamsin Egerton) and Arthur, and people are always drawn to a good love story, always drawn to that idea of love that cannot be, and that’s something that our show definitely has,” he explained. “I think people are very happy to be taken away from the mundane existence and thrown into this magical world.” Will you be tuning in to see Jamie Campbell Bower play King Arthur? Band celebrate premiere of their new documentary, ‘Back and Forth,’ with a secret show on Tuesday night. By James Montgomery Dave Grohl performs at Stubbs on Tuesday Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images AUSTIN, Texas — Dave Grohl doesn’t do South by Southwest … too many bloggers and not enough headbangers for his liking. And really, at this point in his career, there’s no reason for him to change his mind. After all, he’s basically been one of the biggest rock stars on the planet for close to two decades now, first as the kit-smasher for Nirvana and then as the mastermind of the Foo Fighters, so there’s not much left for him to prove. Music industry schmooze fests aren’t exactly his kind of party. He prefers the company of Lemmy. Which is why it was sort of strange to see Grohl and the Foos stride onstage at venerable Austin BBQ shack/venue Stubb’s on Tuesday night to play a SXSW show. But then you realized that this was no ordinary South By showcase — it was the de facto post-party for the band’s new documentary, “Back and Forth,” which premiered earlier in the night as part of the SXSW Film Festival (which is probably why, after strapping on his guitar, Grohl bellowed into the mic, “We’re f—ing movie stars, yeaaaah!”). And in honor of the occasion, the Foos decided to play their forthcoming Wasting Light album in its entirety. Whether the folks in the audience liked it or not. So for the next hour, Grohl and Co. barreled through Light, taking nary a break to address the crowd. Starting with the slipstream guitars of “Bridge Burning” and chugging all the way through to album-closing “Walk,” the Foos delighted in not only exploring the crags of their latest effort — the surging squall of “White Limo,” the spiky fretwork of “Dear Rosemary,” the elastic drums and chords of first single “Rope” — but in wringing as much emotion as possible out of its softer moments, most notably on the standout “I Should Have Known.” It started out hushed, with Grohl delivering the opening lines like an expert dramaturge, then gradually built on wooshing surges of synth before finally growing into a growler, with guitarists Chris Shiflett and Pat Smear crunching chords and drummer Taylor Hawkins bashing away behind the kit. “And that’s the new record,” Grohl announced at the conclusion of the set, and whether or not the SXSW rabble truly got it is largely beside the point. There’s a reason Grohl declared last month to NME that the Foos’ new album is “sequenced like a setlist” … because it truly is. Of course, he wasn’t about to wait around and take the audience’s temperature. Because as soon as those words left his lips, Grohl spat “… And this isn’t!” and lurched into one of the band’s biggest hits, “One by One.” With the band thundering behind him and the crowd really, truly into it for the first time all night, Grohl took it upon himself to finally address the SXSW crowd (or as he called them, “You industry mother—-ers, you f—ing nerds”), and then spent the next hour trying his hardest to win them over. Or convert them. He bashed through hits like “Everlong,” “Learn to Fly” and “The Pretender,” attempted to coax a sing-along from the crowd during “My Hero” (and, unsatisfied with their efforts, declared, “You clearly need to do more shots”), headbanged majestically on “Times Like These,” and, finally, with set-closing “Best of You,” may have succeeded in his efforts. Because as the Foos left the stage, even the industry mother—-rs and the f—ing nerds were cheering. And Grohl smiled, knowing that, even though it’s not his kind of party, he and the Foos had not only kicked off the SXSW Music Fest, they’d conquered it too. I will be doing this for future shows so be ready!!!” The Jonas Brothers’ Joe Jonas recorded a special message for victims of the disaster on Monday and also encouraged the band’s fans to contribute to the Red Cross to help those affected by the 9.0 tremor, which has caused widespread property destruction, left thousands dead and unleashed a potential nuclear crisis thanks to the damage at a pair of power plants. “Hi everybody, it’s Joe here. I’m just sending a little video message to the victims in Japan that have been hit by this horrible tragedy,” said Jonas, who was sporting a few days’ beard growth and looking visibly pained by the situation. “My thoughts and prayers are with you guys. The ones who’ve lost loved ones, I’m so sorry and I’m praying every day for you guys.” Brother Nick Jonas posted a message as well, saying, “our thoughts are with people in Japan, our prayers are with you as well during this tough time. We have to be thankful for that. But really, it’s more about that we had to pick up and move to a different location and switch scenes around, but we are certainly moving forward and carrying on. It’s not really going to affect the film too harshly.” Greene urged people to send their prayers and donations to the people affected by the tragedy. “I think it’s something unpredictable and horrible and unexpected and really unfortunate and heartbreaking,” she said. “I certainly send out my prayers and my thoughts to the people and to their loved ones and lost ones. And hopefully, we as Americans are going to do everything we can to help them rebuild.” Also pledging to help in recent days is 1980s boy band Boyz II Men, who are raising money for the victims of the tragedy through the Red Cross. “Boyz II Men have a very special relationship with the people of Japan,” the group wrote in a statement about their goal of raising $100,000 for the relief agency . “We have been going to Japan for the past 20 years and we are deeply concerned for the people of Japan and especially for our friends and fans who reside in Sendai and all the areas affected by this earthquake and tsunami … We can proudly say that Sendai is a beautiful city and we have performed there many times. In fact, we are planning to perform in Sendai in November of 2011 as part of our 20th Year Anniversary Tour.” So far, their efforts have resulted in more than $15,000 in pledges from fans, who’ve contributed amounts ranging from $10 to $1,500.
