Longstanding Cepheid Mass Mystery Finally Solved

Cepheid variable stars – a class of stars that vary in brightness over time – have long been used to help measure distances in our local region of the Universe. Since their discovery in 1784 by John Pigott, further refinements have been made about the relationship between the period of their variability and their luminosity, and Cepheids have been closely studied and monitored by professional and amateur astronomers. But as predictable as their periodic pulsations have become, a key aspect of Cepheid variables has never been well-understood: their mass. Two different theories – stellar evolution and stellar pulsation – have given different answers as to the masses that these stars should be. What has long been needed to correct this error was a system of eclipsing binary stars that contained a Cepheid, so that the orbital calculations could yield the mass of the star to a high degree of accuracy. Such a system has finally been discovered, and the mass of the Cepheid it contains has been calculated to within 1%, effectively ending a discrepancy that has persisted since the 1960s. The system, named OGLE-LMC-CEP0227, contains a classical Cepheid variable (as opposed to a Type II Cepheid, which is of lower mass and takes a different evolutionary track) that varies over 3.8 days. It is located in the Large Magellanic Cloud, and as the stars orbit each other over a period of 310 days, they eclipse each other from our perspective on Earth. It was detected as part of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment, and you can see from the acronym soup that this yields the first part of the name, the Large Magellanic Cloud the second, and CEP stands for Cepheid. Lil Twist Finishing Debut Album After ‘Emotional’ Lil Wayne Homecoming

‘We did it big, and he was just happy to be home,’ Young Money MC tells MTV News of his close friend and mentor. By Rahman Dukes Lil Twist Photo: MTV News The “Free Weezy” campaign officially ended following Lil Wayne’s release from Rikers Island after serving an eight-month sentence, and the streamers and balloons from the “Welcome Home Weezy” parties have been taken down. Now, the Young Money captain and his stable of artists can focus on resuming their recording careers. Earlier this year, Drake released the now-platinum Thank Me Later album only to be followed by labelmate Nicki Minaj with her debut album, Pink Friday, which is also expected to turn out big numbers on next week’s Billboard charts. In the coming months, the home that Weezy and Birdman built will show no signs of slowing down with more debut efforts slated to drop in 2011 from Tyga, Lil Chuckee, Shanell and Lil Twist. Twist didn’t sit still while Wayne was away, staying busy recording a litany of material, some of which could see the light of day on his upcoming mixtape project with pop phenomenon Justin Bieber . “Me and Justin are working on this mixtape,” Twist told MTV News. “We probably gonna title it Best of Both Worlds [or] Best of Young Rap, Best of Young Pop. We got a few records done.” This past weekend, while walking the red carpet at the American Music Awards, Bieber also confirmed that the pair were working on something together. “Lil Twist is my homey, and we’re working on stuff for fun,” the teenybopper told MTV News. Twist recently returned to his Atlanta home following some much-needed time with Wayne, his close friend and mentor. According to Twist, the reunion was memorable and emotional. “My big brother just got home, Weezy F. Baby,” Twist told MTV News from Atlanta. “We did it real big in Miami as soon as he touched down. I actually missed the show he did with Drake in Vegas , but as soon as he did, we partied like crazy. It was a very emotional and fun moment, man, because everybody was there, the whole Cash Money label and Young Money was there. We did it big, and he was just happy to be home, and it felt good.” Now that Weezy is home, it’s back to business. “Right now, I am working on my debut album, Don’t Get it Twisted, ” Twist said. “I actually went back into the album, I was done with it, and I went to Birdman with it, and he loved the album. But I wanted to go back in and get a few more songs by myself. I got a lot of collaborations on the album, so that’s what I’m doing right now.”

Justin Bieber Calls Lil Twist His ‘Homey’

‘We’re working on stuff for fun,’ singer say of upcoming mixtape with teen rapper. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Tim Kash Justin Bieber Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ AMA2010/ FilmMagic Justin Bieber has been known to dabble in the world of rap. Not only does he perform the rap portion of “Baby” when he sings the song live — since Ludacris isn’t always available to hit the stage with the singer — he even dropped a rap song this fall under the rap pseudonym Shawty Mane in which he raps over Vado and Cam’ron’s “Speaking in Tungs.” Now fans are waiting for what Bieber and Young Money MC Lil Twist will share with the world on their mixtape, some of which Lil Twist teased might drop very soon. When MTV News caught up with Bieber on Sunday at the American Music Awards , he said he had no further details to share about the collaboration. “I don’t know man,” he said, with a smile on his face. “Lil Twist is my homey and we’re working on stuff for fun.” Of course, even if the mixtape never sees the light of day, Bieber has plenty of projects already under way, including the releases of My Worlds Acoustic this Friday and his 3-D movie, “Never Say Never,” next year. “I think this is only the beginning,” he said. “There’s so much more to come and I just hope that I have the career that Usher, my mentor, has had.” It’s a sentiment that Usher shares. “There’s so much more in store for the future, or at least there’s a ton of things we can do and will,” he said. “And with the support of his fans, who will continue to just grow and grow and grow.” Related Photos Justin Bieber’s AMA Night Related Artists Justin Bieber

Watch Out: The World Bank Is Quietly Funding a Massive Corporate Water Grab

Even though water privatization has been a massive failure around the world, the World Bank just quietly gave $139 million to its latest corporate buddy. Billions have been spent allowing corporations to profit from public water sources even though water privatization has been an epic failure in Latin America, Southeast Asia, North America, Africa and everywhere else it's been tried. But don't tell that to controversial loan-sharks at the World Bank. Last month, its private-sector funding arm International Finance Corporation (IFC) quietly dropped a cool 100 million euros ($139 million US) on Veolia Voda, the Eastern European subsidiary of Veolia, the world's largest private water corporation. Its latest target? Privatization of Eastern Europe's water resources. “Veolia has made it clear that their business model is based on maximizing profits, not long-term investment,” Joby Gelbspan, senior program coordinator for private-sector watchdog Corporate Accountability International, told AlterNet. “Both the World Bank and the transnational water companies like Veolia have clearly acknowledged they don't want to invest in the infrastructure necessary to improve water access in Eastern Europe. That's why this 100 million euro investment in Veolia Voda by the World Bank's private investment arm over the summer is so alarming. It's further evidence that the World Bank remains committed to water privatization, despite all evidence that this approach will not solve the world's water crisis.” All the evidence Veolia needs that water grabs are doomed exercises can be found in its birthplace of France, more popularly known as the heartland of water privatization. In June, the municipal administration of Paris reclaimed the City of Light's water services from both of its homegrown multinationals Veolia and Suez, after a torrent of controversy. That's just one of 40 re-municipilazations in France alone, which can be added to those in Africa, Asia, Latin America, North America and more in hopes of painting a not-so-pretty picture: Water privatization is ultimately both a horrific concept and a failed project. “It's outrageous that the World Bank's IFC would continue to invest in corporate water privatizations when they are failing all over the world,” Maude Barlow, chairwoman of Food and Water Watch and the author of Blue Covenant: The Global Water Crisis and the Fight for the Right to Water, told AlterNet. “A similar IFC investment in the Philippines is an unmitigated disaster. Local communities and their governments around the world are canceling their contracts with companies like Veolia because of cost overruns, worker layoffs and substandard service.” The Philippines is an excellent example of water privatization's broken model. After passing the Water Crisis Act in 1995, the Philippines landed a $283 million privatization plan managed partially by multinational giants like Suez and Bechtel. After some success, everything fell apart after 2000, and it wasn't long before tariff prices repeatedly increased, water service and quality worsened, and public opposition skyrocketed. Today, some Filipinos still don't have water connections, tariffs have increased from 300 to 700 percent in some regions, and outbreaks of cholera and gastroenteritis have cost lives and sickened hundreds. “The World Bank has learned nothing from these disasters and continues to be blinded by an outdated ideology that only the unregulated market will solve the world's problems,” added Barlow. cont. added by: JanforGore

Shark Advocate Sonja Fordham Sheds Light on Ending the Slaughter

Sharks are wiped out at a rate upwards of 70 million per year according to expert estimates — far faster than they can possibly replace themselves. Yet as an apex predator, their presence is essential to a functioning marine ecosystem. The voices of those working to stop shark finning are getting louder, which means more educatio… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Wiz Khalifa ‘Went Out On A Limb’ Turning Down Drake Tour

‘I figured I’d try a different method, and it ended up working for me,’ he tells MTV News of opting for his own headlining jaunt instead. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Wiz Khalifa Photo: MTV News Wiz Khalifa said he went with his gut when he turned down Drake’s offer to open for him on the Light Dreams and Nightmares outing, instead embarking on his own headlining effort, the Waken Baken Tour. With only a handful of dates left and after a series of sellouts, the Pittsburgh rapper is pretty sure he made the right call, even being named MTV News’ Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010 . “I went out on a limb and went with my gut feeling,” Wiz told MTV News. “It was risky when you go for what you know, but it’s really easy to take the hand from someone. Not saying I didn’t want it or couldn’t use it, but I figured I’d try a different method, and it ended up working for me.” Over the weekend, the “Black and Yellow” MC held court at New York’s Best Buy Theater, where he was joined by his brother in arms, Curren$y, and Big K.R.I.T. for the Hot 97-sponsored showcase. The lanky lyricist said Los Angeles and Phoenix were among the standout shows during his tour, which also featured stops in Chicago, Dallas and Atlanta. Phoenix, however, was the top moment, according to Wiz. “Honestly, it might be weird, but Phoenix, huge reaction out there,” he explained. “Every show was [great]. “It was crazy,” he added. “I felt like I was on TV when I was out there.” Do you think Wiz made the right call in skipping Drake’s tour? Solar Patio Umbrella Lights Up the Night

Images via Yanko It seems like there’s hardly anything new under the sun when it comes to solar power ideas these days. The Day Shade Night Light is one such design. The patio umbrella gathers sunlight during the day while providing shade, stores the energy in batteries in its stand, and provides a canopy of light during the evening. While not novel, the design does have some improved features over past ideas. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Jamie Lee Curtis for the Hermaphrodite Fetishists of the Day

The problem with most hermaphrodites is that their dual genitals don’t really live to see the light of day….except maybe on the internet back in the 90s when shocking pics of freaks was my daily entertainment….because parents generally get the male reproduction organs taken out, hormone therapy turned the fuck on, so that their little bi-gendered monster lives a normal life…. Now I’m not sure about this Jamie Lee Curtis myth being truth, but it makes sense considering her features are manly, her tits are fake, her body is boxy, her baby is adopted, so I’m gonna say all signs point to that it is……but it doesn’t really matter…as long as you believe it is…and you get off to that kind of thing…than these pictures are close enough… I’ve never met an official tranny who admitted to being a tranny in life…I did meet a girl who claimed she was as we were fucking…her pussy was a little external and her clit did look a little like a dick…but I’ll just stick to that she was telling a joke…cuz that sits better with my sexuality…. So here are some Horror Queen tits, 30 years later, in some fitness top that may or may not have once had a penis….but that might as well have once had a penis…cuz they are not…

will.i.am Reveals Science To Making Hit Records On ‘The Seven’

Black Eyed Peas producer says ‘if you want a song to be a big #1 smash, then you have to play a Michael Jackson song while you’re making your song.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe will.i.am on “The Seven” Photo: MTV As the mastermind behind inescapable jam “Boom Boom Pow” and record-disintegrating smash “I Gotta Feeling,” will.i.am has been rockin’ bodies — and those are just the hits he’s pulled off for the Black Eyed Peas. The producer/rapper has also powered chart-winners for stars Usher , Estelle and John Legend and has recently turned his hitmaking skills toward fellow MC Nicki Minaj. On Wednesday’s (September 29) episode of MTV’s “The Seven,” will, who teamed up with Minaj for her peppy Pink Friday offering “Check It Out,” broke down his approach to creating chart-busting tracks. He said he mines inspiration from some of music’s most game-changing artists when he puts together a record. “We call it ‘A-B-ing.’ Anything you make, there’s nothing new under the sun. So there’s always an ‘A and B’ to whatever your approach is,” he said. “So if you want a song to be a big #1 smash, then you have to play a Michael Jackson song while you’re making your song.” He said using an artist such as Jackson as a benchmark will usually let a producer know if a track really has that ‘It’ factor. “What you don’t want to do is have a ‘hit record’ and then turn it on and it isn’t as loud as Michael Jackson’s.” Minaj, who experienced will.i.am’s skills firsthand on “Check It Out,” said hopping in the studio with the Peas frontman was a singular experience. “That’s when I knew he was a freaking, next-level … not even a human when he recorded me,” Minaj told “The Seven.” “The word ‘producer’ … means different things depending on who’s using the word. will’s the only producer that produced me. He really sat there and he got this weird sound, and I was like, ‘What?’ ” In addition to drawing an insane performance from will, the Young Money Barbie marveled at his ability to quickly craft the cheery instrumental. “The beat wasn’t even done,” Minaj recalled. “He made the beat on the spot.” Minaj’s awe for will appeared mutual. The Peas lyricist said the hip-hop upstart is way more than just a rapper with a rollicking flow; she’s an artist. “Her being a dope rapper, a dope MC, is just an element of the Nicki factor,” will said. What are some of your favorite will.i.am-produced hits? Let us know in the comments! Don’t miss “The Seven” every weekday at 5 p.m. ET on MTV. Related Artists Will.I.Am Nicki Minaj
