Federal Judge Throws Out New York City E-Waste Lawsuit

Photo via cometstarmoon After New York state passed the new e-waste law earlier in June, we figured the lawsuit by electronics manufacturers against New York City for its toughened requirements for e-waste collection would be a moot. The state law already held provisions for e-waste collection that would override that of NYC anyway. Well, it’s finally official – a federal judge has dismissed the suit,… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Alicia Keys, Sporting Baby Bump, Draws Largest Crowd In ‘Good Morning America’ Concert History

Singer opens set with ‘Empire State of Mind.’ By Rebecca Thomas Alicia Keys performs on “Good Morning America” on Friday Photo: George Napolitano/ Getty Images NEW YORK — She wasn’t sporting a cape or an “S” on her chest, but Alicia Keys seemed to live up to the title of her empowerment single, “Superwoman,” drawing the largest crowd ever amassed in the history of ABC’s “Good Morning America” summer concert series on Friday (June 25) morning. This daughter of New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood took the stage at Central Park at 8 a.m., the temperature already tilting toward 80 degrees as she kicked things off with her rendition of the city’s new unofficial anthem, “Empire State of Mind” . “It’s so good to be home, you know, so we gotta talk about where we from,” Keys smiled. Clad in a thigh-baring eggshell-colored jumper, chunky bangles snaking up one arm, Keys performed the tune on piano until the lyrics called for concertgoers to put “one hand in the air for the big city.” The 29-year-old shot up from the bench, revealing the first hint of a baby bump beneath a wide belt as she closed out the final chorus to audience roars: “Now you’re in New York/ These streets will make you feel brand-new/ Big lights will inspire you/ Hear it for New York!” The expectant mother, who recently announced her engagement to producer Swizz Beatz , with whom she’s expecting her first child, paused to talk up her charitable work with Keep a Child Alive, a nonprofit dedicated to assisting African children and families affected by HIV/AIDS. “GMA” host Robyn Roberts congratulated the mother-to-be and complimented Keys’ ensemble, which was paired with towering stilettos. Keys called the impending birth “a blessing.” The R&B diva also introduced the winner of a contest to become the blogger for her newly created website, . The 12-time Grammy winner continued the set with selections from her latest album, The Element of Freedom, launching into the whispery “Try Sleeping With a Broken Heart.” At the song’s piano coda, Keys solicited the crowd’s assistance: “Somebody help me!” and they happily obliged, raining la la la’s across the park. One of a group of teenage female fans standing close to the stage, gushed that she would “die” if Keys brought out current Billboard sensation Drake, as the band began to play the light percussion of “Unthinkable,” written by the Toronto MC . Drake didn’t materialize, but Keys’ clear vocals were more than enough. When fans erupted into chants for an encore, they seemed stunned to see Keys pause then signal “one song” with her index finger. They returned her generosity by singing along word-for-word — and loudly — to the celebratory “No One.” What did you think of Alicia’s “Good Morning America” concert? Tell us in the comments! Light Bulbs To Get Nutrition-Style Labels Next Year

Image via FTC Late last year we reported that the US Federal Trade Commission proposed a new label for compact fluorescent lightbulbs that would show vital statistics like mercury content and the light output in terms of lumens rather than watts, which would make the brightness of CFLs, LEDs and other lighting technology more comparable among consumers. Well word has just hit that the new system has been approved and we’ll soon see … Read the full story on TreeHugger

At Home With Prince, Paris & Blanket Jackson

It’s been almost a year since their famous father’s death, and Michael Jackson’s children have understandably attracted a great deal of attention in that time. We’ve seen them at his memorial service, the Grammy Awards and on YouTube. But who are they really? They’re unique individual s, each a bit like their dad. At 13, Prince Michael Jackson is, in the words of family, “very smart” and an aspiring filmmaker. A year younger, Paris Jackson is “the strongest” of the three. That’s according to their grandmother and guardian, Katherine Jackson, who recently opened up to London’s Daily Mirror about caring for the star’s children. Their baby brother Blanket (real name Prince Michael Jackson II) is, well, a baby brother. His uncle, Jermaine Jackson, says he’s a water-gun-toting prankster. “As soon as you turn your back,” he told London’s Sun of Blanket, who his own son was accused of trying to taser, “he shoots you and you’re left soaking wet.” While Katherine Jackson recently said the home-schooled Prince, Paris and Blanket ” don’t have any friends ” she says they’re going to school come September. In a separate interview with the Associated Press, Katherine Jackson’s lawyer Adam Streisand noted only that Prince Michael would be heading off to school. But deep down, they’re pretty regular kids, just like MJ wanted. They’re upbeat, they’re into video games, movies, karate, and just playing with each other. If you caught Blanket going bonkers with his light saber moves YouTube, you already know he’s come out of his shell a bit. His older siblings are no different. The children are thriving, and what is often overlooked is how Michael Jackson, who lacked a real childhood himself, raised these three without mothers. Perhaps he was more human than people gave him credit for being. “The kids are happy,” said their godfather and Michael’s friend Mark Lester , the former child actor of Oliver! fame. “Things are settling down. That’s good.”

Andy Ripley obituary

Former England rugby international known as a maverick character in a monochrome side England’s current doleful, po-faced rugby tour of Australia would not have been to the liking of Andy Ripley, who has died aged 62 of prostate cancer. Ripley was the last of the great Corinthian sportsmen who played rugby union for fun. For him, the sport, which turned professional in 1995, was never about money. It was a means of self-expression. Ripley won 24 caps for England between 1972 and 1976, and scored two tries. As now, it was not a happy time for an England team constantly in the shadow of a great Wales side. In fact, England lurched between the sublime and the ridiculous. In the space of 18 months, they beat the three southern hemisphere giants: South Africa 18-9 in Johannesburg; New Zealand 16-10 in Auckland; and Australia 20-3 at Twickenham, with Ripley scoring one of the tries. But during his all too brief time in the England back row, the side always finished bottom of what was then the Five Nations championship. Ripley, the No8 in a back row of Peter Dixon and Tony Neary, was a distinctive figure on the pitch. A rangy athlete, with a long stride to match his flowing long hair, he was a maverick character in a monochrome side. Ripley played with an elan more associated with the Welsh side of that golden era, or the French team that in those days would run rings around the yeoman England side. It was on the 1974 Lions tour to South Africa that Ripley was able to give rein to his talents. The team that beat the Springboks was the greatest to leave these shores and, even then, Ripley had to play second fiddle to Mervyn Davies, the Wales No8, who played in all four Tests. Ripley, so often the insouciant Englishman, recently admitted that not making that Test team had left him “devastated”, while Davies has said that Ripley was his most difficult opponent. Born in Liverpool, Ripley had only taken up rugby at the age of 19 while at the University of East Anglia. He played his last game for England against Scotland in 1976 (inevitably England were beaten at Murrayfield), but he continued to play rugby for his club, Rosslyn Park, until the age of 41. In his international playing days, rugby union was an amateur game that received little attention, but somehow Ripley became even more famous as an ex-player. In 1978, this all-round athlete reached the semi-finals of the AAA championships in the 400m. Two years later, he won the BBC series Superstars, in which well-known sportsmen of the day competed in a number of disciplines. Typically, Ripley, in his working life a city gent with the United Bank of Kuwait, gave the £8,000 prize he won in the Superstars competition to the Rugby Football Union. “I reckoned that once I paid tax on it, I would be lucky to buy a second-hand Mini,” he said. More pertinently, Ripley knew that Twickenham would then frown upon a player in an amateur game making money from rugby-related earnings. Five years later, he published Ripley’s Rugby Rubbish (1985), a typically eccentric collection of musings and pictures with mocking captions. Ripley appeared on the BBC’s Wogan programme to plug his book, which he dismissed as a “load of twaddle” and again he gave the profits away, this time to the NSPCC. As he entered middle age, Ripley continued to excel at sport. He was a triathlete, became the world indoor veterans rowing champion and he almost qualified to row in the Boat Race. He continued his association with Rosslyn Park, the unfashionable south-west London club whose ground on the South Circular had barely changed since his playing days. When the English domestic game turned professional in 1996, Rosslyn Park stayed strictly amateur and Ripley pined for what was being lost. In an interview with the London Evening Standard, he railed against professionalism. “Friendship and loyalty have been smashed,” he said. “Rugby has lost its heroes. I want to have heroic figures out there. If they’re chasing a few quid like me I don’t like it. It devalues them. It means they are marionettes, puppets, manipulated by people with money.” He went on to admit he was a “nostalgic, sentimental old buffer”. As usual, though, the light tone hid a serious point. Life was to get more serious and in 2005 he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Ripley remained characteristically good-humoured and became an ambassador for the Prostate Cancer Charity. He was recently made an OBE in the 2010 Birthday Honours. Jean-Pierre Rives, another rugby eccentric and contemporary of Ripley’s in the French back row, once said: “Rugby needs people like Andy. You can still meet people like him in the game, and that proves to me that rugby still has spirit.” Ripley is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, and three children. • Andrew George Ripley, rugby player and athlete, born 1 December 1947; died 17 June 2010 Rugby union Ian Malin guardian.co.uk

Kyrgyzstan Extends State of Emergency

The newly-formed government of Kyrgyzstan has extended a state of emergency announced last week after ethnic violence between Uzbek and Kyrgyz groups has spiraled, killing more than 100 and extending to neighboring provinces. The violence began in the southern city of Osh on the border of Uzbekistan last Sunday, but has since spilled over to other areas in the region. —JCL Al-Jazeera English: Kyrgyzstan’s interim government has extended a state of emergency in the country’s south in a bid to stop ethnic clashes that have killed more than 100 people. Authorities on Sunday imposed a 24-hour curfew in the southern Osh region, and extended a state of emergency to cover the entire neighbouring province of Jalal’abad. Police and soldiers have also been authorised to “shoot-to-kill” to defend civilians and in self-defence, but the measure has not stopped the spiralling violence pitting ethnic Uzbeks against Kyrgyz. Gunfire rang out on Sunday in the city of Jalal’abad, where the day before a mob burned a university, besieged a police station and seized an armoured vehicle and other weapons from a local military unit. Daily Kos Mourns ‘Such a Good-Natured Woman,’ That Helen Thomas

Even as she sneered that the Jews should “get the hell out of Palestine,” Helen Thomas could easily find fervent defenders in the hard-left environs of the Daily Kos. Some of them couldn’t believe such a sweet and good-natured woman would be demonized. The blogger “General Choomin” literally claimed that on Tuesday night:  This diary is mostly about the smear campaign aimed at Helen Thomas and how right wing propaganda easily mixes with Israeli propaganda. It is a story that people would label me as crazy if I didn’t have the facts to back it up. How could such a good natured woman have so many people denounce her without even knowing the effort that went into it? How could so many people turn their backs on her even though she served her country in a way that most civilians never could ? Perhaps these people should try being on the other end of one of her rants before they try to paint her as Sweet Polly Purebred. “Chipoliwog” agreed on Tuesday that Helen the “patient heroine” had been wronged and her legacy of greatness was unappreciated:  Yesterday, the world lost the voice of one of it’s greatest journalists. Lost to the exigencies of political correctness. Hoisted on her own petard. Gone is the legacy of over 60 years of aggressive truth seeking journalism. Fearlessness in the face of power. A voice that had garnered the respect and fear of 12 or more Presidents of the United States. So undaunted by power that she would even ask a hard question immediately after being praised by such Presidents. Gone is the patient heroine that endured the blatant humiliation of the just previous President who banished her to the back of the room and not once called on her during his term. [ Not true . Just wrong.] Ms. Thomas’s mistake has been seized upon but her apology has not. Her legacy of speaking truth to power, of shining the light on corruption, and the propensity of Man’s inhumanity to Man is snuffed out. This blogger should have really headlined this blog “This Will Induce Vomiting.” The Kosmonauts were upset that Barack Obama wasn’t risking his own image by joining them publicly in hailing her as a brave and truthful freedom fighter:   What I had hoped for in the election of Barack Hussein Obama was that integrity and authenticity would rule the day. What I wanted to hear from the President was that Helen screwed up and perhaps seriously. But to remind the American people that this person should be remembered for her long enduring accomplishments in defense of freedom. Instead, what we got was him either playing the same game or being played by that game. So White House press corps, in the era of false equivalency passing for journalism, who among you can ever presume to rise to Ms. Thomas’s mantle? Who will speak truth to this and future Presidents? Who will be the gadfly when others are sycophants? On Monday, “Sluggahjells” was the first Kosmonaut to the barricades, smelling an AIPAC conspiracy to gin up a mob against this wonderful journalist: Whether you believe her statements or not, Thomas knows that saying things like that in public would come with the risk of dealing with a mob like [CNN’s Ed] Henry and all using the chances they can get to rid of her once and for all. Especially when AIPAC always hovering around. There just seemed like there was no way she was going to survive this one. Still though, thank you DC Stenography society of stupidity for going after an 89 year respected wonderful journalist instead of doing your job and calling out your other colleagues who said controversial cringe like things about Muslims over the years.
