Kevin Smith’s Red State Will Debut with VOD and Theatrical Live Q&As This Fall

In a blog entry posted Tuesday to his website The Red Statements, Kevin Smith spoke out again against critics of the unconventional plan to self-distribute his latest film, Red State , and explained how his twofold VOD /live Q&A strategy will work. (Boiled down to the post’s essential message: “Suck it, haters!”) And to think, just five months ago the world thought Smith’s Sundance stunting was all crazy-talk.

5 Coen Brothers Stock Players Who Haven’t Appeared In a Michael Bay Film, But Should

When you see Transformers: Dark of the Moon this week — and you will, preferably on the biggest screen possible , if Michael Bay has any say — you might notice something a bit strange. Nope, not how Dark of the Moon manages to work in multiple shots at the departed Megan Fox ; rather, how Bay staffed his new film with a cavalcade of actors recognizable to fans of the Coen brothers. Frances McDormand, John Turturro and John Malkovich, all co-star in Dark of the Moon , and continues the strange bit of pop culture cross-pollination between Bay and the Coens that started with the casting of Fargo co-stars Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare in Armageddon . In honor of this randomness, here are five other Coen brothers players who should appear in a Michael Bay film.

5 Essential Qualities from the Original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Movie That Can’t be Recreated

This morning we relayed that Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol scribes Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec would head up a reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles , which is probably good news. Problem is, the best parts of hard-bitten 1990 original should be preserved in turtle wax for eternity. You simply can’t recreate the essence of a film where the chief voice talent is Corey Feldman, and why on Earth would you try? Here are five elements from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that can’t be topped or (probably) even retooled.

5 Albums of the Past Decade That Could Be Adapted Into Movies

American Idiot , the Green Day album that birthed a Broadway musical, is nearing a move to the big screen after at least one aborted attempt. Milk scribe Dustin Lance Black is in talks to write the screenplay, and now I’m in talks with myself to realize the potential in adapting albums as films. It’s a mystifying and interesting thought; that rumored Candy Land movie is basically Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream anyway, right? Here are five more that could make for intriguing cineplex draws.

5 Essential Life Lessons From the Films of Sidney Lumet

The late filmmaker Sidney Lumet leaves behind a half-century’s worth of masterpieces ( 12 Angry Men , Dog Day Afternoon , Network , The Verdict ), misfires ( The Wiz , Gloria , Guilty as Sin ), and enduring curios ( Last of the Mobile Hot Shots , The Group , The Offense ). Among that body of work are a few vital lessons any moviegoer would do well to take to heart.
