(Image source/getty images) Homelessness In NYC Public Schools Are Reportedly At A High A The New York Times report is shining a light on the realities of 10% of all public school kids, they’re homeless. NYT says one out of every 10 students lived in temporary housing during the last school year. That means about one out of every 10 students in New York City will sleep in a homeless shelter or in the homes of relatives. That’s the highest rate of homeless students the city has ever seen. This is sad because homeless students tend to struggle academically: Reportedly, in the 2015-16 school year, just 12 percent of students living in shelters passed the state math exam, and 15 percent passed English. New York City has one of the highest populations of homeless students of any big city in America. About 5 percent of students in Chicago’s public schools were homeless last year, and just above 3 percent of Los Angeles’ students were homeless in 2016. There are about 1.1 million children in the city’s public schools in total. That means over 100,000 kids have no real homes to call their own. They said close to 38,000 homeless students lived in a shelter last year, down slightly from the previous year; the rest stayed with relatives while their families looked for permanent housing. Staggering, but who is the blame? The rent in NYC is HIGH and nearly impossible for someone making a median wage because of gentrification. NYC is supposed to be a “philanthropic” city, and NO ONE (wealthy) is offering to help keep these kids in healthy, consistent living conditions. Any solutions? Thoughts?
We have some good news, Little People, Big World fans: You may not need to say goodbye to Jeremy and Audrey Roloff after all. Back in July, of course, the beloved twosome stunned fans of this TLC series by announcing they would not be returning for Season 14 . Jeremy said in his statement that this decision had actually been reached about a year earlier, telling followers on Instagram: It has been an amazing run, and I can’t say thank you enough to all of you who have watched and supported us along the ride. We have the most loyal fans on TV and we appreciate every one of you. You are what made doing this so fun. We will still be supporting the family as they carry the #LPBW torch onward. This is a decision concerning Audrey and me specifically – the show must go on. And Matt has now confirmed as much: the show WILL be going on. The patriarch tells Soap Dirt that filming for Season 14 is underway, and that viewers likely have actually NOT seen the last of Jeremy and Audrey. Cameras were on hand for Matt’s recent birthday party, for example, and these two were in attendance, so… “that’s a little tip for you there,” Matt said. He explained that Jeremy and Audrey are not on the “filming schedule,” but they are very much around at times and aren’t about to hide from TLC. “They’ll participate in the family events,” he says simply. That’s nice to know, isn’t it? Roloff admitted in this same interview that mentioned that his son and daughter-in-law dropping out of the show was quite a “twist to the whole thing, but TLC decided to go forward. And why not, he continues? “They’ve got Zach and Tori, and Amy and myself” as cast members, even noting “Caryn and Chris” in a reference to his girlfriend, Caryn Chandler, and Amy Roloff’s boyfriend, Chris Marek (below). It sounds as if both will have significant roles on Season 14. As for when new episodes may air? Matt doesn’t know. He says he heard the spring at one point, but it’s possible he and his loved ones may be back on our small screens prior to that. When Gabriella Bernard started connecting with professional photographers and catching the eye of reality show casting judges she thought all of her childhood dreams were coming true. In an exclusive interview with HelloBeautiful she opened up about what was on the other side of her childhood ambitions. “From a really young age I always wanted to be a model, ” said Bernard. Her aspirations were inspired by an aunt who saw her as a shoo-in. “She said you know you’re so slim and you have long legs and you’re gorgeous , you should be a model.” A toddler at the time Bernard asked, “What’s a model?” It wasn’t until she was watching Wendy Fitzwilliam be crowned Miss Universe that the power of representation would allow her to see herself as someone could take control of the spotlight. “Seeing Wendy Fitzwilliam win Miss Universe as a black woman , as a Black Trinidadian woman it made me believe in myself, that I could get up on a big stage and become a successful model,” she said. More than a decade later after convincing her mother that she could balance her university studies and follow her passion Bernard was fully ready to embrace her fate. However, she was disappointed to find that the experiences she was subjected to weren’t as empowering as the life she had envisioned for herself. Instead of a space where she could exercise her creativity and challenge herself she found the Caribbean modeling world to be a series of unbalanced power dynamics where people unlearned common courtesy as soon as they crossed the threshold of success. Discomfort and disillusionment were practically job requirements and as someone who was determined to speak up for herself Bernard was unqualified. “Sometimes people know that they’re doing the wrong thing and because you are speaking up against it and you are speaking up for yourself they will tell you that you’re being unprofessional you can’t be in this industry if you want to be like that. To me in Trinidad it’s like a power move that they do, that because ‘I’m such and such you need to do what I say’,” she said. Throughout the #MeToo movement women have claimed the label ‘unprofessional’ was lobbied as a threat by offenders. “That happens with photographers and designers ,” She continued. During a shoot with a photographer who touched her inappropriately she was told that she was “ruining” the shoot by shielding herself from his touches and speaking about feeling uncomfortable. “I got my makeup done for two hours and then he put a welders mask on my face and the first thing I said was ‘Why are you putting a welders mask on my face? I just spent two hours doing my makeup, like that doesn’t make any sense.” While this choice seemed strange she remained cooperative even when the photographer refused to acknowledge her questions. Moments later she had to speak up to protect herself. “I was in a bikini and a welders mask and I’m posing and then all of a sudden I feel his hands on my breasts and I jumped and I took off the mask and I’m like ‘What are you doing?’ he’s like ‘No, no you ruined the pose!’ I was like “No, but you’re touching my breast and he was like ‘Yeah but that’s because I’m fixing your top it had a crinkle’ and I was like, ‘Are you crazy?!” She credits her mother with making sure that she had a firm foundation before being placed in such a trying situation. When she wanted to start modeling at 12 her mother pleaded with her to wait out of concern for her personal safety. “She really shielded me from the industry and being in it for some time. I see why because there are perverts and had I been younger I don’t know that I would have been able to handle myself accordingly because these men use some very underhanded tricks to try and get you to sleep with them.” She understands why people don’t report such incidents but she has hope that increased transparency will lead to more women coming forward. “I think that the more that we stand up and speak up about it the more support that other people have because the fear is always ‘I don’t wanna come out and then people don’t believe me’ or ‘I don’t wanna come out and then people bash me’.” She thinks that “by all of us having a voice every single voice adds to our strength.” She was able to stand firm with predatory practices from independent entities but unfortunately, she didn’t feel as empowered on the set of Caribbean’s Next Top Model where Fitzwilliam the woman she had once idolized was now one of many people passing judgment on far more than her appearance. Constantly aware that she was there to be evaluated, and that every interaction on camera and off was apart of the competition, she was forced to try and be agreeable even when she felt like some things happening during filming were unjust. “I did experience colorism and a hint of prejudice and discrimination behind the scenes,” she said. “The first time I spoke up about it we had a whole two hour conversation about it, it was back and forth and I ended up having to apologize to the person because I saw that it wasn’t going anywhere again I was the one in the competition not them,” she continued. In a clip from the show that went viral viewers can see her losing the composure she worked so hard to develop and sobbing when being told that she had to relax her natural hair to remain in the competition. She was then even more shocked with Fitzwilliam berated her for crying because it was unprofessional even though she eventually gave in and taped a scene where she pretended to be happy so that the judges wouldn’t be upset. The producers showed her crying in contrast to other contestants crying about their boyfriends to equate the two things in viewers eyes infuriating Bernard. “I feel like the motive of the entire episode was to humiliate me on reality television.” The identity that producers and judges wanted to challenge by straightening Bernard’s hair was difficult for her to build up after years of denying herself to try and “fit in”. “I told them how important my hair was to me not just for cosmetic reasons but it was self-love reasons too because growing up I had predominantly white friends and I wanted to look white. I wanted to fit in so I would use high flash on my camera and all sorts of weird things just to not have my features . It’s crazy I would put ice on my lips to try and get them smaller just small crazy things that I look back at now and I’m like ugh.” Despite giving in on set she isn’t letting the experience defeat her. In fact she went home inspired to get involved in production and contribute to change in the media landscape. She developing a short film called “ Black Hair ” to encourage others to have their say and not be intimidated by outside voices even if they are in a position of power. She says, “Aside from all that drama because I’m not even trying to focus on that I just want people to know that they shouldn’t be afraid to be who they want to be however that looks. They should be comfortable in their skin if they want to have a weave, they can have a weave, if they want to have their hair natural, they should have their hair natural. Such a trauma could spell the end of many relationships, but especially one such as this; one essentially built on partying and cosplay. There’s simply no sturdy base here for anything as dramatic as a loved one’s death. Mix in the awkwardness of that loved one being Grande’s previous serious boyfriend… and here we are. Davidson may be equipped with a 10-inch long penis, but he simply isn’t equipped with the emotional maturity to deal with a tragedy of this nature. YES by Simon Delott This summer, in the wake of Ariana’s engagement to Pete Davidson , I was so confident that they would stay together. Now, I’m eating crow. I didn’t see this coming. “Sociologists at NYU used decades of statistical data from 4,500 families and found that couples in which the man was much taller than the woman were more likely to stay together,” I wrote at the time. “Folks, Ariana Grande is 5 feet tall. Pete Davidson is 6-foot-3,” I continued. “Those 15 inches could see them through to the end.” We all know that the best way to discuss love and romance is using cold hard numbers and statistical analysis. I’m not sure where I went wrong. After all, if a spur-of-the-moment relationship between a pop star with baggage and a comedian who’s never met an impulse on which he didn’t act can’t work out … what hope is there for the rest of us? In all seriousness, though, the cause of their breakup was reportedly largely Mac Miller’s tragic death earlier this fall. The passing of Ariana’s very recent ex, so soon after her return to the public eye, left her wounded. It was all too much. But that doesn’t mean that these two won’t ever get together again. They’re both still young, and it sounds like this breakup was as amicable as a dropped engagement can possibly be. My real question is this: Is Ariana going to sing the song, “Pete Davidson,” when she goes on tour in the future? There’s no non-awkward way to either sing or skip that song unless they get back together. Just saying. After all, how could a singer with a four-octave vocal range ever relate to a comic whose style is so painfully one-note? Let’s forget for a moment that Pete mocked the Manchester bombing that traumatized Ariana and so many of her fans. And let’s ignore, for now, the fact that Davidson said he sympathizes with the man who groped Grande or that he beamed with pride over the fact that Bill Clinton ogled Ari at a freakin’ funeral. (As a guy with a Hillary Clinton tattoo, that must have been an extremely confusing time for Pete.) What we’re focusing on today is the fact that Grande is clearly a woman who’s drawn to virtuoso talent, and despite spending the past four years in the best comedy college imaginable, Davidson (rather ironically) comes up short when his abilities are compared to Ariana’s. On a more serious note, insiders have claimed that the breakup was at least partially the result of Ariana’s grief over the death of her previous boyfriend, the immensely gifted Mac Miller. There’s been a lot of talk about Pete and Ari’s perceived insensitivity toward their exes in publicly admitting that they’d secretly longed for each other for years (in other words, since well before they were single). To be clear, both parties’ duties to their exes ended the moment they broke things off – but who wants to live in a world where we’re all just fulfilling our minimum obligations to one another? It’s not hard to see how Ariana might have wound up with some seriously conflicted feelings – as well as some major doubts – in the wake of Miller’s overdose. But in the end, out guess is that a talent gap wider than Pete and Ariana’s height difference also played a significant role in bringing this ill-fated romance to a halt. Last week, we learned the heartbreaking news that Joe Giudice will be deported to Italy after his release from prison. Eldest daughter Gia Giudice is rallying support for her father in the hope that he can win his appeal. And now, so is his younger daughter, 12-year-old Milania. You can read her impassioned plea below. Milania Giudice took to Instagram and shared a pair of throwback photos that she took with her father before his incarceration. “My dad,” Milania begins her captions. She describes Joe Giudice as someone “who is the best dad in the world.” That more or less how you’d expect a man’s 12-year-old daughter to describe him. Milania then writes that he “needs to come home.” Milania’s captions continue as she vows that their family isn’t going to let the court’s deportation order go unchallenged, “We aren’t done fighting, dad,” Milania promises. Joe has 30 days (fewer than that, now) to appeal the court’s ruling. “I can’t believe this is happening,” she admits. As someone who is not even a teenager, Milania was totally unprepared for the horrors that our world has in store for so many families. Joe has already been away from his family for long enough — serving his time for fraud. Until last week, Teresa and her daughters had been looking forward to his release in 2019. It was like the light at the end of the tunnel, when their family would be reunited. Milania admits that she can’t wrap her head around him being away from his family for even longer — this time separated by an ocean instead of bars. “I can’t imagine another day without you,” she writes. Milania vows that the whole family is working to see him returned home when he finishes his stint. “We are gonna do everything we can to fight this daddy!!” she promises. She gushes: “I love you with all my heart buddy.” A few years in prison might seem like a short time for adults, but it’s a huge chunk of Milania’s life that she’s now enduring without her father. This deportation order could make a bad situation even worse. Milania concludes her message with a simple, sad tag. “#heartbroken,” she writes. We can imagine so. While Milania is fortunate to have two parents who love her and to live a privileged existence, she still wants her father in her life. And so do her sisters. As we mentioned, Gia Giudice also sent out a call for support in preventing her father’s deportation. Where Milania speaks from the heart, Gia’s passionate words come with a list of compelling arguments. Significantly, she mentions that Joe was brought to the United States at the age of one by his parents. Deporting him to Italy is deporting him from the only country and only home that he has ever known. Italy is a beautiful country, but that doesn’t mean that a person being shipped there upon release from prison would be the same as sending them home.
