Britney Spears Album Sales, Documentary Ratings Tank; Will Residency Flop Too?

Britney Spears’ Las Vegas residency kicks off this weekend amid at least some doubts that the one-time princess of pop music can still bring ’em in. Her album , Britney Jean, brought in the worst sales of her career to date, and her I Am Britney Jean documentary netted a modest 706,000 viewers. When Spears’ documentary For the Record aired on MTV in 2009, it averaged 3.7 million viewers, more than five times what the 2013 model garnered. Britney Jean debuted at #4 earlier this month with just over 64,000 copies sold during her first week on shelves, giving her her worst showing ever. Will her much-anticipated two-year Vegas show suffer similarly mediocre results? We’ll find out in a matter of hours. She takes the stage tonight. Despite the fact that her team slammed reports of sluggish ticket sales, seats are still available for purchase for Brit’s opening night and future shows. Then again, there’s also still time for the word to get out and for her to exceed expectations. Britney has been down before and bounced back strong. A Vegas residency is a different ballgame, so don’t write her off.

Red Lobster: Closing Down Across the Country?

Red Lobster is closing down across the country, according to rampant Internet rumors about its demise, although its parent company says otherwise. Owner Darden Restaurants has been trying to quash false reports since Christmas that Red Lobster is shuttering its locations across the nation. Darden hopes to sell or spin off the Red Lobster chain into another company, but is not “closing any restaurants,” spokesman Rich Jeffers clarified. Red Lobster Closing? Still, this afternoon, “Red Lobster closing” was the No. 1 item trending on Yahoo, and the rumor was the subject of Tweets and Facebook posts. “To clarify, reports that @RedLobster is closing are false,” the company tweeted out Friday afternoon. “We’re looking forward to your next visit!” Jeffers said the rumors stemmed from a piece in LA Weekly that “was clearly being facetious” about the shutdown, and blamed today’s media culture. “You had a couple outlets where clearly folks weren’t practicing good journalism, and no one called to verify if what they read in LA Weekly was accurate.” The LA Weekly piece had been updated as of Friday to say no restaurants were closing, but the rumors can’t be chalked up entirely to a miscommunication. At the end of the day, these two facts remain undeniably true: The company is trying to unload or spin off Red Lobster , which is widely believed to be in financial decline, to focus on its growing brands. Red Lobster is overpriced and not that good.
