Adam Lambert’s ‘If I Had You’ Video Frolics In Politics

New video aims to celebrate how dancing and partying bring everyone together. By James Montgomery Adam Lambert on the set of his “If I Had You” video Photo: Eric Ford/On Location News A few months ago — back when he was still the reigning “American Idol” runner-up — Adam Lambert told MTV News about the meaning of his latest single, “If I Had You,” the video for which has just premiered on VH1.com . “Basically, what it’s saying is no matter what color your skin is, no matter what religion you are, no matter what your sexuality is … we can all party together,” he said. “And all this other stuff — money, success, fortune, fashion, glam — it’s all great, but it doesn’t mean anything if you’re not connecting.” Clearly, Lambert was thinking big with the song, which meant that it needed an equally epic video. Early sneak peeks had him rocking spiked shoulder pads and gallivanting through a forest, and Lambert himself promised that things would get “kind of psychedelic.” And on Monday (June 14), we finally got to see the finished project, an over-the-top affair that’s, yes, kind of psychedelic and even a tad bit political. Though mostly, it’s just a pretty awesome Euro-pop video. The clip opens with Lambert — in a leather duster coat and gloriously braided pseudo-rattail — storming his way down a forest path. Whether he and director Bryan Barber intended it to or not, the scene recalls Men Without Hats’ classic video for “The Safety Dance” (all that’s missing is the lute-playing little person). From there, Lambert discoverers a clearing in the forest, one packed with party people — of all races, colors, creeds and proclivities, naturally — who are all in the midst of a totally excellent celebration. (Most of said party people are actually Lambert’s friends, from his days performing with L.A.’s “Zodiac Show.”) Overtaken, Lambert has no choice but to join in on the fun, and from there, things get psychedelic, all brightly blurring colors and whooshing chemtrails and, uh, Allison Iraheta. And the message is pretty clear (if not a tad bit idealistic): Humanity can, in fact, put their differences aside and just dance. Perhaps that’s the way to solve all of our global conflicts. Who’s to say Lambert’s not right? Like all great pop stars, he’s not afraid to dream. Share your reviews and interpretations of Adam Lambert’s “If I Had You” video in the comments. Bafana & Denmark Friendly match overview

With the clock ticking down towards June 11 and the showdown against Mexico at Soccer City looming closer, Bafana Bafana now have the team to compete at the World Cup finals. That is the assessment of head coach Carlos Albert Parreria after his side had scored a record 5-0 win over minnows Guatemala in a one sided warm-up friendly played at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on a cold Monday night. “It does not matter whether the opposition is not so strong. It is never easy to score five goals and that is something we have never done before,” said Parreira. “Technically we were not so good but we created chances and killed off the opposition. I could not have asked for more in that respect.” Parreria added Bafana, with one friendly left to play against Denmark on Saturday, are ready for the World Cup, which kicks off at the new Soccer City on June 11 when the hosts tackle Mexico in the opening Group A match. “We have a team. We have a shape and most importantly, we have an identity as South Africans. We now play the ball on the ground and keep possession. “We go into the World Cup with confidence and the spirits high. Our fitness level and physical condition will be as good – if not better -than any side in the World Cup.” Parreira will fine tune his side against Denmark at Atterdigeville’s Super Stadium on Saturday (2.15pm). Parreria said he was satisfied with the four matches Bafana have played in the last two weeks as he intensified his preparation programme. Bafana thumped Thailand 4-0 in the first match at Nelspruit on May 16, followed that up with a 1-1 draw at Orlando Stadium with Bulgaria and then defeated Colombia at Soccer City last Thursday before clobbering Guatemala. Since taking charge of the ailing Bafana last November, Bafana are unbeaten in 11 matches. Parreira has weaved his magic in seven months in charge and while he is right about the 5-0 win not being Bafana’s best performance, he assessed the friendly matches saying: “Our 1-1 draw against Bulgaria was our best display so far. “The 2-1 win over Colombia the toughest and this one (Guatemala) the biggest. We have improved throughout the campaign, especially the players who have been with me on both the camps to Brazil (in March) and Germany (in April).” Parreria will name his final squad of 23 players for the tournament on Tuesday morning as per Fifa rules. At present Parreira has 28 players in his squad. Parreria caused a lot of speculation by not playing controversial striker Benni McCarthy during Monday’s match, preferring to use Bernard Parker and veteran Siyabonga Nomvethe, as his second half substitutes. Parreria would not be drawn on whether McCarthy (32) will be part of his World Cup plans: “There was nothing wrong with McCarthy. I say nothing more until I announce the squad.” However, with only four strikers in his squad, Parreira is unlikely to send the West Ham United striker home, despite the fact he has been battling with a weight problem since he joined the camp earlier this month and has played only 20 minutes against Colombia. Parreria also said his star midfielder Steven Pienaar, who had a storming match against the Guatemalans, and the other overseas based players, will have to adapt. “I have played Pienaar in a couple of positions in the midfield to see where he is best suited to Bafana. The reason we have a shape and foundation is because I did not chop and change the players for every match and that shape stays for the World Cup.” It was a special night for Bafana skipper Aaron Mokoena (29) who became the first Bafana player to reach 100 caps. Said the Portsmouth defender: “This was a big night for me. “It was a great honour being the first South African to win 100 caps and it means a lot to me.” He dedicated his 100 caps to his mother and Jomo Sono, the Cosmos coach, who spotted his talent as a raw 17-year-old. Mokoena also said Bafana were raring to go. He said the big difference with the new-look team is the attitude of the players. “The positive attitude of the players is fantastic and we are now making it easy for ourselves by scorning goals.” Striker Katlego Mphela scored two penalties but otherwise did not have a great night and his indifferent form is another reason for Parreria to keep McCarthy in the squad. The other goals came from Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Surprise Moriri and Parker. Arctic Ice At Low Point Compared To Recent Geologic History

Less ice covers the Arctic today than at any time in recent geologic history. That's the conclusion of an international group of researchers, who have compiled the first comprehensive history of Arctic ice. For decades, scientists have strived to collect sediment cores from the difficult-to-access Arctic Ocean floor, to discover what the Arctic was like in the past. Their most recent goal: to bring a long-term perspective to the ice loss we see today. Now, in an upcoming issue of Quarternary Science Reviews, a team led by Ohio State University has re-examined the data from past and ongoing studies – nearly 300 in all – and combined them to form a big-picture view of the pole's climate history stretching back millions of years. “The ice loss that we see today – the ice loss that started in the early 20th Century and sped up during the last 30 years – appears to be unmatched over at least the last few thousand years,” said Leonid Polyak, a research scientist at Byrd Polar Research Center at Ohio State University. Polyak is lead author of the paper and a preceding report that he and his coauthors prepared for the U.S. Climate Change Science Program. Satellites can provide detailed measures of how much ice is covering the pole right now, but sediment cores are like fossils of the ocean's history, he explained. “Sediment cores are essentially a record of sediments that settled at the sea floor, layer by layer, and they record the conditions of the ocean system during the time they settled. When we look carefully at various chemical and biological components of the sediment, and how the sediment is distributed – then, with certain skills and luck, we can reconstruct the conditions at the time the sediment was deposited.” For example, scientists can search for a biochemical marker that is tied to certain species of algae that live only in ice. If that marker is present in the sediment, then that location was likely covered in ice at the time. Scientists call such markers “proxies” for the thing they actually want to measure – in this case, the geographic extent of the ice in the past. While knowing the loss of surface area of the ice is important, Polyak says that this work can't yet reveal an even more important fact: how the total volume of ice – thickness as well as surface area – has changed over time. “Underneath the surface, the ice can be thick or thin. The newest satellite techniques and field observations allow us to see that the volume of ice is shrinking much faster than its area today. The picture is very troubling. We are losing ice very fast,” he said. “Maybe sometime down the road we'll develop proxies for the ice thickness. Right now, just looking at ice extent is very difficult.” To review and combine the data from hundreds of studies, he and his cohorts had to combine information on many different proxies as well as modern observations. They searched for patterns in the proxy data that fit together like pieces of a puzzle. Their conclusion: the current extent of Arctic ice is at its lowest point for at least the last few thousand years. As scientists pull more sediment cores from the Arctic, Polyak and his collaborators want to understand more details of the past ice extent and to push this knowledge further back in time. During the summer of 2011, they hope to draw cores from beneath the Chukchi Sea, just north of the Bering Strait between Alaska and Siberia. The currents emanating from the northern Pacific Ocean bring heat that may play an important role in melting the ice across the Arctic, so Polyak expects that the history of this location will prove very important. continued added by: JanforGore

Mexico Providing ID’s for Illegals in US

The Mexican government is opening a satellite consular office on Catalina Island — a small resort off the California coast with a history of drug smuggling and human trafficking — to provide the island's illegal Mexican immigrants with identification cards, The Washington Examiner has learned. The Mexican consular office in Los Angeles issued a flier, a copy of which was obtained by The Examiner, listing the Catalina Island Country Club as the location of its satellite office. It invites Mexicans to visit the office to obtain the identification, called matricular cards, by appointment. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, a Republican whose district includes Catalina Island, said handing out matricular cards will exacerbate an already dangerous situation. “Handing out matricular cards to Mexicans who are not in this country legally is wrong no matter where it's done,” he said. “But on Catalina it will do more damage. It's a small island but there's evidence it's being used as a portal for illegals to access mainland California.” Rohrabacher added, “If there were a large number of Americans illegally in Mexico and the U.S. consulate was making it easier for them to stay, Mexico would never permit it.” Mexican officials with the consular office in Los Angeles could not be reached immediately for comment. The matricular consular identification card, is issued by the Mexican government to Mexican nationals residing outside the country, regardless of immigration status. The purpose is to provide identification for opening bank accounts and obtaining other services. But the cards are usually used to skirt U.S. immigration laws, since Mexicans in the country legally have documents proving that status, Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said. In 2004 testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee, FBI officials called the card an unreliable form of identification. The agency said that Mexico lacks a centralized database for them, which could lead to forgery, duplication, and other forms of abuse. Officers with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said their agency was asked by Mexican officials not to enforce U.S. immigration laws on the island while the cards were being issued. “It amazes me every time that the Mexican government has the gall to tell us what to do,” said an ICE official, who asked not to be named. “More surprisingly is how many times we stand by and let them. This is just an example of one of hundreds of requests we've had to deal with.” In April, Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies seized a boat carrying large quantities of marijuana and detained three Mexican nationals who said they were being smuggled into the United States. The island has a sizable Mexican migrant population. Most are undocumented low-income workers. added by: diode

Slipknot’s Paul Gray 911 Call Released

Hotel worker discovered Gray’s body and identified his name from a nearby prescription bottle. By Josh Wigler Slipknot’s Paul Gray Photo: Bob King/ Redferns A 911 call placed by an alleged employee of the Iowa hotel where Slipknot bassist Paul Gray was found dead Monday has emerged. TMZ obtained a recording of the call placed by an unnamed hotel maintenance worker who discovered Gray’s body. “We believe that it’s a drug overdose,” the employee said of Gray’s condition. “There’s a hypodermic needle next to his bed here.” Asked if Gray were awake, the employee replied: “Oh God, no,” explaining that it appeared as though Gray had been dead “for a while” based on his physical appearance. He identified Gray’s name from the prescription label of a nearby bottle of pills. The employee also said Gray’s mother had called the hotel earlier that day because she was having trouble reaching her son. Gray’s name and the location from which the 911 call was apparently placed are consistent with reports about his death. An autopsy on Gray’s body conducted Tuesday was unable to determine the Slipknot bassist’s cause of death, which remains under investigation. Reports state that the autopsy didn’t suggest any evidence of foul play and concurred with the 911 caller’s claims that Gray had been dead for several hours prior to his body’s discovery. Polk County medical examiners are still waiting for toxicology results, which could take between four and six weeks to complete. Known by Slipknot fans as #2 or “The Pig,” Gray was a founding member of the heavy-metal band alongside Shawn “Clown” Crahan and Joey Jordison. Fans and fellow musicians have expressed an outpouring of support in the days since Gray’s death, with Lamb of God guitarist Mark Morton telling MTV News: “He was an immense talent, and this is such an incredible loss. Paul had a HUGE heart and lived and died for the music he made. I will miss him, and the world will too.” Share your memories of Paul Gray and Slipknot in the comments below.
