Effort underway to remove tons of fat from London’s sewers | Raw Story

A team of workers sporting breathing apparatus and carrying shovels has started clearing around 1,000 tonnes of fat from sewers around London's Leicester Square, a water company said Tuesday. Cooking fat being poured down drains under one of the city's main tourist attractions is thought to be causing blockages. Leicester Square borders London's Chinatown and its bustling restaurants and cafes, as well as the West End and Soho entertainment districts. The clean-up, which could take up to two months, is described as the biggest ever of its kind by Thames Water, the firm organising it. Danny Brackley, one of those involved in the clean-up, said they could not even access the sewers at first as they were blocked by a four foot (1.2 metre) thick wall of solid fat. added by: bansheewail

Lady Gaga Fans Display Their Monster Finery Before ‘Today’ Show

From cigarette glasses to studded bustiers, the costumes at Rockefeller Plaza would make the Haus of Gaga proud. By Nuzhat Naoreen, with additional reporting by Kimberly Reynolds Lady Gaga fan at the “Today” show on Friday Photo: Nuzhat Naoreen/ MTV News NEW YORK — The heat wave was still lingering in the city, but that didn’t stop devoted Lady Gaga fans from getting decked out in their most inspired looks before waiting overnight in Rockefeller Plaza to see their idol perform for the “Today” show on Friday morning (July 9). From a sea of blond wigs, to dangerously high heels, the Gaga footprint was everywhere. Some fans rocked styles straight from her music videos as a tribute to the pop princess. Others took to a cue from Gaga’s unique sense of style to put together original eye-catching outfits. “Telephone” seemed to be the biggest inspiration of the night. MTV News caught sight of fans who had soda-can rollers tucked in their hair and glasses made out of fake cigarettes as a nod to Gaga’s looks in the video. Some little monsters wore lacy leggings and studded tops, and many wrapped yellow caution tape around themselves. Then there were the fans who got even more creative. One woman bought a strapless dress and adorned it with yellow flowers, while another used a piece of pleather to make an outfit. A lot of fans also relied on great accessories. A young woman, wearing a short, bright-red jumpsuit glued metallic rocks onto the side of her sunglasses, and her look was so Gaga-like that many fans stopped her for pictures. Hundreds of fans, who were perhaps not as gifted with time or sewing skills, threw on body and face paint and made special T-shirts and posters in preparation for Gaga. To get a taste of the many attention-grabbing looks in Gaga’s “Today” show audience, check out the flipbook ! Which Lady Gaga would you re-create and wear if time and skill were no matter? Talk about it in the comments. Related Photos Little Monsters Take Over NYC Related Artists Lady Gaga

Lindsay Lohan’s Courtroom Notes Hit The Internet

Actress took meticulous notes during probation violation hearing. By Gil Kaufman Lindsay Lohan’s hand written courtroom notes Photo: David McNew/Getty Images Lindsay Lohan might be looking for a new lawyer in the wake of attorney Shawn Chapman Holley quitting her case following Tuesday’s probation hearing, in which the actress was sentenced to 90 days in jail and 90 days in an inpatient rehab facility. But in the wake of the fingernail-expletive scandal that broke on Wednesday, photos have emerged showing that Lohan wrote a lot more than a profane message during the day-long hearing. Close up images of a sheet of notebook paper Lohan held up over her face during the hearing revealed that the “Mean Girls” star was taking meticulous notes in Judge Marsha Revel’s Beverly Hills courtroom on Tuesday, mostly laying out her explanations for missing a series of alcohol education classes. Lohan held the notepad up to her to cover her face as photographers tried to get images of her, revealing very neat lines of writing in red ink that filled up half a page. “Dad’s sitting behind Liana,” is says near the top of the page, after some housekeeping notes on the date, time and location of the hearing. “Those are her bullet so-called bullet fr … scheduled class for April 15, 2010 … Beryl indicates LL [Lindsay Lohan] has an excused … August 17, 2009 … which has stated LL being more/progressively complaint.” Later, she refers to a court date on January 2 of this year as a “face to face … But D.A. doesn’t have it/but Shawn does!,” and then notes that one of the absences marked by the alcohol-education program was due to her “signature on the wrong ‘sign sheet’ line (mistake),” noting that another one from February was marked as missed because she was only supposed to have a one-on-one session, not a group class. She notes a November class was missed, but made up one day later. Other notes refer to her attending four weeks of classes in a row in December, another mix-up with a probation officer about a court order, and a class she missed because of work travel to London for a Haiti benefit and fundraiser that included press. Lohan is scheduled to report to jail on July 20 and is expected to serve approximately 25 percent of her sentence or, assuming good behavior, around 23 days. Jeremy London "Will Do Whatever It Takes to Stay Sober"

In one of the strangest celebrity gossip stories of the year, actor Jeremy London claimed last month that he was kidnapped at gunpoint and forced to do drugs . The tale seemed hard to believe, literally, as London’s own family expressed public doubts over its validity and said the former Party of Five star needs help for a substance abuse problem. While London insists the incident took place , he admits in a new interview that he struggles to remain sober. Asked if he’s been clean over the last couple months: “I have had a few drinks here and there. I haven’t been perfect. I’ve been horribly depressed… I’ve slipped and I’ve taken a couple painkillers a couple times.” Continued the actor: “Being an addict sucks, it’s a disease and it’s a day-to-day struggle no matter what. But I’m doing great. I’m sober. This [kidnapping] is absolutely something that could cause someone to fall off the wagon…and I’ve been able to stay sober through it. So that’s a big test to me. I’ve proven that I can do it.” And he has the best possible reason for doing so: a son. “He’s the light of my life, I wouldn’t have made it through this without my son. I’m going to do whatever it takes to stay sober.”

Why Small-Scale Wind Turbines Make Sense in Rural India, But Not So Much in Indiana

photo: Ryan Somma via flickr A number of sources have outlined new plans of India’s Tata Power Company to help electrify rural India through deployment of small-scale wind turbines , the same general type that are marketed throughout the US for rooftop and backyard usage. It’s a great idea in India, where rural electric grid access is spotty and energy usage low, less so… Read the full story on TreeHugger
