Andy Ripley obituary

Former England rugby international known as a maverick character in a monochrome side England’s current doleful, po-faced rugby tour of Australia would not have been to the liking of Andy Ripley, who has died aged 62 of prostate cancer. Ripley was the last of the great Corinthian sportsmen who played rugby union for fun. For him, the sport, which turned professional in 1995, was never about money. It was a means of self-expression. Ripley won 24 caps for England between 1972 and 1976, and scored two tries. As now, it was not a happy time for an England team constantly in the shadow of a great Wales side. In fact, England lurched between the sublime and the ridiculous. In the space of 18 months, they beat the three southern hemisphere giants: South Africa 18-9 in Johannesburg; New Zealand 16-10 in Auckland; and Australia 20-3 at Twickenham, with Ripley scoring one of the tries. But during his all too brief time in the England back row, the side always finished bottom of what was then the Five Nations championship. Ripley, the No8 in a back row of Peter Dixon and Tony Neary, was a distinctive figure on the pitch. A rangy athlete, with a long stride to match his flowing long hair, he was a maverick character in a monochrome side. Ripley played with an elan more associated with the Welsh side of that golden era, or the French team that in those days would run rings around the yeoman England side. It was on the 1974 Lions tour to South Africa that Ripley was able to give rein to his talents. The team that beat the Springboks was the greatest to leave these shores and, even then, Ripley had to play second fiddle to Mervyn Davies, the Wales No8, who played in all four Tests. Ripley, so often the insouciant Englishman, recently admitted that not making that Test team had left him “devastated”, while Davies has said that Ripley was his most difficult opponent. Born in Liverpool, Ripley had only taken up rugby at the age of 19 while at the University of East Anglia. He played his last game for England against Scotland in 1976 (inevitably England were beaten at Murrayfield), but he continued to play rugby for his club, Rosslyn Park, until the age of 41. In his international playing days, rugby union was an amateur game that received little attention, but somehow Ripley became even more famous as an ex-player. In 1978, this all-round athlete reached the semi-finals of the AAA championships in the 400m. Two years later, he won the BBC series Superstars, in which well-known sportsmen of the day competed in a number of disciplines. Typically, Ripley, in his working life a city gent with the United Bank of Kuwait, gave the £8,000 prize he won in the Superstars competition to the Rugby Football Union. “I reckoned that once I paid tax on it, I would be lucky to buy a second-hand Mini,” he said. More pertinently, Ripley knew that Twickenham would then frown upon a player in an amateur game making money from rugby-related earnings. Five years later, he published Ripley’s Rugby Rubbish (1985), a typically eccentric collection of musings and pictures with mocking captions. Ripley appeared on the BBC’s Wogan programme to plug his book, which he dismissed as a “load of twaddle” and again he gave the profits away, this time to the NSPCC. As he entered middle age, Ripley continued to excel at sport. He was a triathlete, became the world indoor veterans rowing champion and he almost qualified to row in the Boat Race. He continued his association with Rosslyn Park, the unfashionable south-west London club whose ground on the South Circular had barely changed since his playing days. When the English domestic game turned professional in 1996, Rosslyn Park stayed strictly amateur and Ripley pined for what was being lost. In an interview with the London Evening Standard, he railed against professionalism. “Friendship and loyalty have been smashed,” he said. “Rugby has lost its heroes. I want to have heroic figures out there. If they’re chasing a few quid like me I don’t like it. It devalues them. It means they are marionettes, puppets, manipulated by people with money.” He went on to admit he was a “nostalgic, sentimental old buffer”. As usual, though, the light tone hid a serious point. Life was to get more serious and in 2005 he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Ripley remained characteristically good-humoured and became an ambassador for the Prostate Cancer Charity. He was recently made an OBE in the 2010 Birthday Honours. Jean-Pierre Rives, another rugby eccentric and contemporary of Ripley’s in the French back row, once said: “Rugby needs people like Andy. You can still meet people like him in the game, and that proves to me that rugby still has spirit.” Ripley is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, and three children. • Andrew George Ripley, rugby player and athlete, born 1 December 1947; died 17 June 2010 Rugby union Ian Malin guardian.co.uk

Sean Garrett Talks Finalizing Deal With Lil Wayne, New Mixtape

‘Wayne embraced me with open arms,’ singer/songwriter tells Mixtape Daily of Cash Money deal. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Jayson Rodriguez Sean Garrett Photo: Universal Don’t Sleep: Necessary Notables Mixtape : The Inkwell Headliner : Sean Garrett Key Collaborations : “She Geeked” (featuring Gucci Mane and Tyga), “Summer Love” (featuring Bun B and Yo Gotti) and “Girls on Girls” (featuring Lil Wayne and T-Pain) Essential Info : Sean “The Pen” Garrett always has to be on point, because he might have to switch modes at any given moment. The Grammy winner has his singer hat on one minute, then he has to get right back into his songwriter/producer duties when he gets a call from a T.I. or Rihanna or Jamie Foxx, who just took a song Sean wanted to keep for his own album. The Atlanta native said he doesn’t mind; he’s elated to be active. His next mixtape, The Inkwell, drops in a few weeks. ” The Inkwell is sort of like the album before the album,” Sean said recently in New York. “As a creative person, creative artist, you have to sort of spoon-feed your audience. I was an artist well before I became ‘The Pen.’ With all of that, a lot of people have had the opportunity to hear my music on other people. So sort of representing yourself as an artist, I want my albums to be classic but creative, where people are excited to hear my music. I want people to look at me as an artist as someone that’s fun and at the same time intricate, but at the same time not typical. ” The Inkwell is the introduction to Sean Garrett the artist, officially,” the crooner added. “The first single ‘She Geeked’ is real ill, real street, but sexy. All the ladies like it. It’s me, Gucci Mane and Tyga from Young Money. It’s just super swagged-out. My music … I don’t wanna call it R&B. It’s just swag music. If you can relate to the street, you can relate to my music. If you can relate to R&B, you can relate to my music. If you can relate to urban, you can relate to my music. If you can relate to mainstream, you can relate to my music. The Inkwell is a collaboration of great artists that I expect to create music. It gives people a great look on who Sean Garrett is. I got a smash with Rocko, smash with Roscoe Dash. Of course Gucci Mane, of course Lil Wayne, Bun B, Yo Gotti, Nicki Minaj. Should I stop? It’s real ill. The more I work on it, which I’m pretty much done, the more excited I get.” After The Inkwell drops, Garrett will be focusing on the launch of his album. He’s close to finalizing a deal with Cash Money Records. Lil Wayne brought the deal to the table before he went to prison. “I really got a lot of respect for Wayne,” Sean said. “Wayne embraced me with open arms before he went on a little vacation. He took me on tour with him. He was really open arms about rocking with him. He put me on the pilot seat going on right before him. I got a lot of respect for [Cash Money], because it represents where music is going as far as really believing in yourself and not just being in a box. Just creating your own style, your own movement and believing in your team. Cash Money is really family-orientated. I can bring a lot to Cash Money, in reference to what I do, developing their other artists, helping them to travel across the water. They’ve got artists they are trying to break internationally. It’s sort of a win/win situation.” Sean has been on the road, opening for Gucci Mane, and he said he’s about to go on tour with Cash Money/ Young Money family member Drake. Other Heat This Week

Kristen Stewart Would ‘Definitely’ Want Role In ‘Wanted 2’

‘But I wouldn’t want to be in a mindless, blow-up movie,’ the star tells MTV News of action flick aspirations. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Kristen Stewart Photo: MTV News For the last few months, Kristen Stewart has been rumored to be the director’s pick to take over for Angelina Jolie as the female lead in a sequel to 2008’s ultraviolent “Wanted.” While the “Eclipse” star says she can’t confirm or deny the talk, she told MTV News it’s a project she wouldn’t pass on. “I mean, like, it’s weird to answer questions like this. The only two projects that I’m confirmed in now are ‘On the Road’ and ‘Breaking Dawn’ 1 and 2,” Stewart hedged. But would she be into the assassin role if she were, in fact, being considered for the part? “Yes. Definitely, as long as it was good and I mean, it’s really exciting to see [that could be an opportunity],” she admitted. ” ‘Wanted’ was a great movie, like, James McAvoy makes that movie different than most other action movies because he’s a real guy, and I feel like most action movies don’t have that. So if it had that [element], definitely. But I wouldn’t just want to be in a mindless, blow-up movie. I’m not into it.” Since we were on the topic of the Hollywood rumor mill, Stewart also addressed gossip that had her making her London stage debut soon. “People have been asking me that. That’s so weird. I don’t know where that came from,” she said. “I would love to. That’s also something that really intimidates me and I have no experience in it. But I would want to, definitely. I’m just not doing that right now.” Would you like to see Kristen in “Wanted 2”? Tell us in the comments! We’ll be

Handmade Eco Jewellery Hits the Mainstream

Drake Shows ‘Vulnerable’ Side In Documentary, Hip-Hop Experts Say

‘Drake: Better Than Good Enough’ airs Wednesday, June 23, at 10 p.m. on MTV. By Shaheem Reid Drake Photo: MTV News An early cut of the documentary “Drake: Better Than Good Enough,” airing Wednesday at 10 p.m. on MTV, was screened for hip-hop journalists Thursday (June 17) at the MTV offices. The doc — which is still being shot — follows Drake on his Away From Home Tour, but also shows intimate moments with his family, vocal coach and inner circle and the recording of his just-released debut, Thank Me Later. In the footage, we see Drizzy recording the song “Show Me a Good Time” and learn why Drake only writes his rhymes on a BlackBerry, among other intimate moments. “What was interesting is that I didn’t know Drake’s mom was sick,” The Source Executive Editor Amy Andrieux said shortly after the screening. “To see him going into his grind — knowing that now — is incredible. I know family is important to a lot of artists, but a lot of people don’t realize how much effort you have to put in these days. I think that was the most prominent thing about the entire documentary from what we saw. As a rapper, yeah, there’s a certain amount of grind you have to do. There’s constant effort. But it doesn’t mean you’re nice [on the mic], you’re dope. But Drake is doing whatever it takes to be that and to maintain his grind. That was really interesting to see it in film, ’cause you don’t see that.” “The most revealing parts of the clips that we saw from the Drake special are the ones he didn’t necessarily mean to be revealing,” multimedia personality Miss Info said. “Personally, I think he’s a professional, and I think there are no real candid moments with him. I think he’s aware of what’s going on and what he’s going to keep to himself. The revealing parts to me were the little observations that this guy, rather than having a million weed carriers, a bunch of groupies alongside while he performs, he had his vocal coach there. He’s taking vocal lessons in his tour bus. He’s wearing Debussy T-shirts, a classical composer. Those are the things to me that stood out. Rather than the ‘I’m truly happy to be here, and I hope this moment lasts forever.’ ” ThisIs50.com’s Jeremy Bettis said he was also surprised to see Drake and his coach. “The part that I liked the most [in the documentary] was the part seeing him training with his vocal coach,” Bettis said. “That’s the vulnerable part a lot of artists don’t want to show. But to see that he actually puts work in and he knows that he can better himself, that was the dopest part I’ve seen. His work ethic is crazy. It shows with the records he puts out, the videos he puts out, the performances. He was at Summer Jam one day, flew out the same to go to London to do a show. It shows the work. “I think it’s Drake’s consistency,” Bettis added about what makes the 23-year-old such a bankable superstar already. “He makes good records. He’s got a great team around him, obviously, great influences: the Jay-Zs, Kanyes, the Waynes. He knows what he’s doing. He’s not the average dumb artist just throwing out records. He has a plan, and he’s following that plan.” What behind-the-scenes footage are you looking forward to in the upcoming documentary? Let us know in the comments! Jeremy London Kidnapped, ‘Forced’ To Smoke Drugs

‘Party of Five’ star escaped bizarre kidnapping last week; alleged kidnapper is in custody. By MTV News staff Jeremy London Photo: Charley Gallay/WireImage Jeremy London — the actor best known for his roles in “Party of Five” and Kevin Smith’s “Mallrats” — was robbed and abducted by a man in Palm Springs, California, on Thursday night, beginning a five-hour ordeal in which he was held at gunpoint and forced to smoke drugs. Palm Springs police told RadarOnline that London, 37, was attempting to change a flat tire on his vehicle when several men stopped to help him. After London offered to drive the men home, one of them — a man identified as Palm Springs resident Brandon Adams — pulled a gun on the actor, then forced him to drive his own vehicle, smoke drugs and buy alcohol. “[During the kidnapping] he was forced to smoke dope [crack cocaine or amphetamines] and then purchase booze and hand it out in a gang area of Palm Springs,” Sergeant Steve Douglas told Radar. London managed to escape around 3 a.m. Friday, Douglas added. The actor’s vehicle was later recovered in the Palm Springs neighborhood where Adams lived. Adams was arrested and charged with several felonies, including kidnapping for ransom with injury, strong arm robbery, carjacking, receiving stolen property and taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent. Adams pleaded not guilty, The Associated Press reported Thursday, but remains in custody with bail set at slightly more than $500,000. A publicist for London confirmed to the AP that the actor was indeed the kidnapping victim and that he is working closely with police in their investigation, adding that he is currently at “an undisclosed location with family and friends.” In the past, London has struggled with drug abuse. In an April interview with People magazine , he said he had spent time in a rehabilitation center due to a prescription drug addiction. In 2004, he was arrested for allegedly driving with a suspended license and carrying controlled substances.

Javier Mascherano’s agent claims he is in talks with Internazionale

• Argentina captain keen to link up with Rafael Benítez again • Mascherano has spent three years at Anfield Javier Mascherano’s agent has stated he is in talks with Internazionale over a possible move which would see the Liverpool midfielder reunited with his former manager, Rafael Benítez. Mascherano, who was heavily linked with a move to Barcelona last summer, has spent the past three years at Anfield but contract negotiations have been put on hold and one of his agents, Marco Piccioli, claims the 25-year-old may very well follow in the former manager’s footsteps. “There has already been a first contact with director Marco Branca,” Piccioli told www.Itasportpress.it. “We are evaluating the move hard and in the next few days we will have a new meeting to better establish the details of this transfer deal.” Mascherano, who has two years left on his deal at Liverpool, revealed this week he is learning Italian. And the Argentina captain at World Cup 2010 admitted this month he would relish the opportunity to link up with the Spaniard again. “Would I follow Benítez? I don’t know,” he said with a shrug. “At the moment I really know little about my future. But of course with Benítez at Liverpool I experienced three incredible years. His football is my football.” Liverpool Internazionale Transfer window World Cup 2010 guardian.co.uk

England v Algeria: glamour fixture requires an A-list crowd

Princes William and Harry are bringing the glitz Cape Town – but can Fabio Capello’s team reign supreme? Refuse gas and air, and proceed straight to the epidural – England’s next World Cup game is upon us. Finally, Fabio Capello’s two-and-a-half lions have the chance to exorcise last Saturday’s painful draw against the USA, by grinding out a nerve-shreddingly unconvincing 1-0 victory over Algeria. The setting for Friday’s crucial game is Green Point stadium, with the Cape Town match what you might call the glamour fixture in England’s first-round schedule. Which is to say, it will be attended by various people for whom one suspects other cities in South Africa are that bit too “authentic”. Spectators are to include London mayor Boris Johnson, who is on a five-day fact-finding mission for the 2012 Olympics, and the allegedly “football-mad” Princes William and Harry, who are on a joint tour of southern Africa. William is president of the Football Association – a role somehow even more pretend than Uncle Andrew’s job as UK trade ambassador – and he and his brother will stay on in Cape Town after the game to play a leading role in Saturday’s big event, which is a glitzy reception for England’s 2018 World Cup bid. Preparations for the soiree look solid at present – though obviously all could be derailed should Harry opt to go in fancy dress as PW Botha. Ultimately, though, Friday’s game offers England a chance to silence their footballing critics – an amusing number of whom seem to be German. First up was erstwhile Germany captain Michael Ballack, who reflected upon the difference between the two international sides. “We’re inspired by our history,” he explained, “whereas I sense England are intimidated by their past.” Next in line was the legendary Franz Beckenbauer. “What I saw of the English against the USA had very little to do with football,” schadenfreuded Der Kaiser, rightly judging that he had been watching not a football game, but some kind of psychological episode. Even German-born football fan Dr Henry Kissinger called the New York Times to offer his views on the World Cup – though sweetly he declined to add to England’s misery. “Brazil has played the most beautiful football,” the former US secretary of state apparently ruled, “while Italy has specialised in breaking the hearts of its opponents, and for Germany everyone attacks in a way suggestive of Erich von Falkenhayn’s huge flanking movements in world war one – and everyone defends.” Penetrating analysis there from the former comedy Nobel peace prizewinner. Perhaps ITV might consider Kissinger as a replacement pundit for the sacked Robbie Earle? The good doctor is already scheduled to attend the later rounds of the World Cup, South Africa being one of the countries to which he can travel without risking a connecting flight to the Hague. As for our own efforts to “move on” from Saturday, they have been mixed. If anything could make you yearn to be watching even the most lacklustre of England displays again, it is the manner in which Her Majesty’s press fills the gap between games. Lowlights since Saturday include Archbishop Desmond Tutu being presented with a Sun-branded vuvuzela, and the media pack besieging the home of hapless goalkeeper Robert Green’s parents, presumably waiting for them to emerge and disown him. The Greens have since appealed to the PCC for protection. What was needed, clearly, was something to Put Everything Into Perspective – and on Wednesday, Michael Dawson and Matthew Upson provided it. Escaping from what has been described predictably as England’s “gilded cage” of a team base, the two Tottenham defenders took a busload of hacks with them to visit an orphanage jointly funded by the FA and Spurs. According to Upson, “this puts everything into perspective” (that is, the orphanage does, not travelling everywhere with dozens of Boswells). So let us gird ourselves with that recalibrated perspective. After all, in a World Cup not short of early underperformers, England’s first result now demands to be reconsidered. According to the demented mathematics of the footballing optimist, favourites Spain losing to Switzerland pretty much bumps up our shabby draw with the USA into a triumph. Or something. The point is, it should be perfectly possible to await England v Algeria nursing the same level of mad hope with which you began this tournament, safe in the knowledge your despair will have its day.
