Daniel Craig and the Queen Leave Olympics Crowd Shaken, Stirred with Pre-Recorded Opening Ceremony Skit (VIDEO)

Daniel Craig was at Her Majesty’s Service for the opening ceremony of the London Olympics. The James Bond franchise’s latest 007 appeared with Queen Elizabeth and her Corgis in a pre-recorded skit that had the secret agent and the queen meeting in Buckingham Palace. London’s Mail Online reports that the Queen told Craig, “Good evening, Mr. Bond,” before accompanying him on a helicopter ride to Olympic Stadium with the secret agent at the aircraft’s controls. The film then gave way to real life as their stunt doubles sailed into Olympic Stadium beneath Union Jack  chutes, eliciting gasps from the crowd. After touchdown, the real Queen, her hair strategically mussed, then reappeared to take her place in the royal box. Although, sadly, no Rage-virus-infected zombies showed up to spike the adrenaline levels of the gathered athletes, the ceremony’s director Danny Boyle didn’t completely ignore his darker instincts for the presentation, which was entitled Isles of Wonder . The Child Catcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang put in an appearance and Harry Potter baddie Lord Voldemort menaced in the form of a giant inflatable that was reminiscent of Pink Floyd’s The Wall concert tour.  Fortunately, a small army of approximately 30 Mary Poppinses swooped down into the stadium on umbrellas to save the day. That’s a weird act for the athletes to follow. Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter.

Christopher Nolan Defends Fans’ Irate Response to Dark Knight Rises Reviews

The Dark Knight Rises director Christopher weighed in about the brouhaha that flared this week after some passionate Batman fans threw a fit after a spattering of negative reviews, resulting in aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes’ decision to disable user comments for the time being. Nolan’s final stint in the trilogy is expected to fetch box office records this weekend and so far reviews have been mostly positive, but a few critics gave TDKR a thumbs down and some fans went ballistic. Wednesday night at the film’s London premiere, Nolan appeared to defend fans’ emotional response. [ GALLERY: Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway & Co. at the Dark Knight Rises premiere ] “I think the fans are very passionate about these characters the way a lot of people are very passionate. Batman’s been around for over 70 years and there’s a reason for that,” A.P. reported Nolan as saying. “He has a huge appeal, so I think you know people certainly respond to the character.” RT’s editor-in-chief Matt Atchity said in an open letter on the site that the venomous push-back may alter their policies going forward, changing its commenting system so that it no longer allows for anonymity. “You’ll have to stand by your comments, just like a critic does. So you’ll still be able to argue about a movie you haven’t seen, but people will know it was you,” wrote Atchity. In an unrelated bout of TDKR mini-controversy, Nolan also offered up his take on conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh’s opinion that the pic’s villain, “Bane” is a not so-subtle reference to presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney’s former employer Bain Capital, decrying the movie and its makers for maligning the former Massachusetts governor who continued to hold a major investment in the company after departing its day to day operations. Liberals have accused Romney and Bain of “outsourcing American jobs overseas.” “I’m not sure how to address something that bizarre, to be honest,” said Nolan. “I really don’t have an answer for it, it’s a very peculiar comment to make.” Morgan Freeman, who plays Lucius Fox in Rises called the whole thing “ridiculous.” The Bane character originated back in 1993, first appearing in DC Comics’ Batman: Vengeance of Bane #1 , according to Wikipedia. All You Need Is Kill: Emily Blunt on Fighting ‘Fun’ Tom Cruise in Sci-Fi Actioner

Although Emily Blunt came close to being cast in two different Marvel superhero movies, it’s not until later this year that she gets her first action-type role in Rian Johnson’s time travel thriller Looper . But her turn as a gun-toting farm girl is just the beginning for Blunt: She’s currently in intense training to play a lethal soldier in Doug Liman ’s futuristic sci-fi All You Need Is Kill , opposite Tom Cruise . Set against the backdrop of an alien war, All You Need Is Kill (based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka and Yoshitoshi Abe’s Japanese graphic novel) revolves around a soldier who dies in battle only to wake up to re-live the same day over and over again – think Groundhog Day with aliens and Tom Cruise. Blunt will play Valkryie One, a highly-decorated special forces fighter who Cruise encounters while trapped in his time loop. Blunt is currently training stateside before going to London to learn fight choreography for a month ahead of an October filming date. Speaking with Movieline over the weekend at Comic-Con, where she, Johnson, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt presented footage from Looper , Blunt described her regimen for what she describes as “the most ass-kicking role I’ll probably do.” “I basically do ten workouts a week,” she said. “Two a day, five days a week – it’s hell! And I’ve cut out drinking wine, which is really sad! That’s the thing I miss most.” “But I’m going to build these guns out,” she added, flexing her biceps. “They’re coming, right? I’m like that in the mirror. I’m just flexing over and over, and John [Krasinski]’s like, ‘Holy shit!’” Why action, and why now? “Really, it’s about timing and about the right part, the right moment and the right crew of people. It’s never been that I’ve turned my nose up at doing that. This really felt like the right time to do it, and you can’t ask for a better team than Tom and Doug – Doug is such a visionary and Tom is the most accomplished action guy you can find. We sat down a few times, we had a table read and character development talks, and he’s really fantastic in the room with that stuff; he’s very collaborative and very, very professional. And he’s fun.” Audiences who are used to seeing Blunt in films like The Devil Wears Prada and The Young Victoria might not expect to see her tear through battlefields and mow down aliens alongside Cruise – and that might make the shift all the more impressive. “Doug Liman said to me, ‘I wanted to cast you because I don’t think people expect it, and there’s something a bit more lethal about that,’” Blunt recalled. Will we get to see Blunt use her newfound lethal skills Cruise at least once or twice during their time looped adventure? “I can’t say! Maybe there’s a little bit of that… maybe,” she hinted with a smile. “I’m learning martial arts now, so hopefully I have a few scenes where I can take him out.” Read more from Comic-Con 2012 and stay tuned for our Looper chat with Blunt. Charlie Sheen Makes Record Donation to USO

Charlie Sheen has made it the tiniest bit harder to hate him now. The actor announced today that he will donate 1% of his profits from Anger Management – which is off to a solid start on FX – to the USO, guaranteeing that military organization at least $1 million and leaving the final donation figure uncapped. It’s a record donation from one individual. “The USO would like to thank Charlie Sheen for his very generous $1 million donation to our Operation Enduring Care Campaign and his interest in helping us lift the spirits of those who have endured so much to protect the freedoms we enjoy daily,” said General John I. Pray, Jr., Executive Vice President and Joint Chief of Staff, U.S. Air Force.

Rihanna Posts Bikini Photos, Announces Clothing Line

Oh, the sexy irony. Rihanna posted new bikini pictures of herself and assistant Melissa Forde over the weekend, during the same time period when she also announced her first-ever clothing one, one we presume will cover a lot more of the body than the outfits donned by the singer in these photos: I’ve been wanting to design my own collection for some time,” Rihanna said of the fashion endeavor, which will involve the company River Island and debut in 2013. “River Island is the perfect partner for me to collaborate with and working with a British, family run business also really appealed to me. I find London really inspiring and River Island loves to have fun with clothes. I’m looking forward to working with them and creating something really special.” It’s unclear when the images above were shot, but they were just released and snapped in Sardinia. Saudi Arabia Women Athletes to Compete in Olympics For First Time

Saudi Arabia will send female athletes to the London Olympics this summer, ending the ultra-conservative Muslim country’s record of not doing so. The decision, announced Thursday by the IOC, means every country competing in the London games will include women athletes for the first time in history. The two female Saudi Arabia Olympic competitors are judo athlete Wodjan Ali Seraj Abdulrahim Shahrkhani and 800-meter runner Sarah Attar. The duo, who were invited by the International Olympic Committee, were entered by the Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee by the July 9 deadline. “This is very positive news and we will all be delighted to welcome these two athletes in London in a few weeks time,” IOC President Jacques Rogge said. “With Saudi Arabian female athletes now joining their fellow female competitors from Qatar and Brunei, it means that by London 2012 every national Olympic committee will have sent women to the Olympic Games,” he added. Saudi Arabia had been under increasing pressure from the IOC and human rights groups to include women athletes. The IOC has been in negotiations with the Saudis for months on securing the participation of women. Qatar and Brunei, two other countries that have never sent any female athletes to the Olympics, are also including women on their teams in 2012. About 10,500 athletes are expected to compete in London, representing more than 200 national Olympic committees. It should be great.
