Check It Out: Mos Def Yasiin Bey As The New Face In The Louis Viutton, Muhammed Ali Campaign

Yasiin Bey, formerly known as Mos Def , has found himself in a new acting role ; a highlighted lead role in the new Louis Vuitton/Muhammed Ali campaign commercials. Check it out… We think it’s pretty dope. Mos Yasiin has never disappointed us as an actor and this new but brief role has us thinking about his next new gig. …the clips evoke the dramatic power of the young heavyweight everyone remembers. Set in a dark boxing ring, the rapper/actor dresses like Ali, moves like Ali and talks like Ali, reciting just a few of the former champs now legendary words. It’s quite inspiring, but be forewarned, also a little haunting. Both commercials are directed by Stuart McIntyre of Stream Films , and will hopefully reach television screens very soon. Directed by Stuart McIntyre, the vid shows Bey “dramatically reciting lines made famous by Ali while invoking the boxer in the ring. Visual artist Niels Shoe Meulman draws on the ring as Bey talks, culminating in a visual and sonic piece of art.” Big ups to Muhammed Ali and the amazing dedication to his career via McIntyre and Vuitton. Carrie Stage Musical Dies Again

The off-Broadway musical adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie may have outlasted its 1988 stage predecessor by four times the stage run, but it died nonetheless last weekend — two weeks early! The NYT has the post-mortem: “Several theater producers contacted recently said that Carrie , no matter how well acted and sung, presented far more than the usual share of difficulties, the most insurmountable being that nearly every character is dead at the end….Several reviewers complained about certain songs and a one-note blandness in the high school scenes, but the sharpest criticism was that Carrie had been de-camped to the point of dullness.” Chloe Moretz , you’re our last hope! Martin Scorsese More of a Vampire Guy

Where does Martin Scorsese stand on the enduring cultural clash between vampires and zombies? Where else? “I happen to like vampires more than zombies. A vampire, quite honestly, you could have a conversation with. He has a sexuality. I mean the undead thing… Zombies, what are you going to do with them? Just keep chopping them up, shooting at them, shooting at them. It’s a whole other thing that apparently means a great deal to our culture and our society. There are many, many books written about it and many movies. I saw one in London when I was doing Hugo. I saw one late at night one weekend. It was called Colin, by a young filmmaker [Marc Price]. He shot it, I think, digitally by himself, edited it himself. It was savage. It had an energy that took the zombie idea to another level. Really interesting filmmaking. Disturbing.” Also: He gets Raging Bull II just about as much as you and I do. [ GQ via /film ]

Memo to Hollywood: Don’t Mess With Louis Vuitton

I hesitate to even pass along word of the luxury fashion purveyor’s ongoing litigiousness lest this site land in its hungry crosshairs, but: Have you heard about the lengths to which Louis Vuitton is going to keep its brand safe from the grubby likes of The Hangover Part II ? Or how another, recently resolved court victory has possibly shored up its case against the film’s studio Warner Bros.? Memo to Hollywood: Either get your clearances up front or do not even think of messing with these guys. This has been going on for a while , but THR Esq. now offers up the bone-chilling latest: On March 22, a judge granted a summary judgment victory to Louis Vuitton over a Super Bowl TV commercial produced by Hyundai that featured for approximately one second a basketball that bore resemblance to a flower-like symbol on chestnut-brown background design that was trademarked by Louis Vuitton. The French brand says that the judge’s decision two weeks ago shows why it should be able to go forward with its claims against Warner Bros. for infringing and diluting its trademark by showing for one brief moment in [ The Hangover Part II ] Zach Galifianakis telling someone who pushes his bag, “Be careful, that is … that is a Lewis Vuitton.” In mid-March, Warner Bros. responded to the lawsuit by telling a New York judge that it had a First Amendment right to feature trademarks and incorporate real-life references to brands without getting the consent of owners. The studio added there wasn’t any confusion, and if there was, it was de minimis and/or the responsibility of the company that had actually produced the knock-off handbag. Meanwhile, the designer isn’t backing down, arguing in a court filing (with its victory versus Hyundai in mind) that “Louis Vuitton’s ‘aggressive’ enforcement of its trademark rights and prompt action against those who misuse its trademarks are necessary concomitants of its exclusive rights in the brand.” Fine, but to what end? Is “the brand” — and apparently its business — so fragile that millions of dollars in legal expenses are themselves necessary concomitants of relevancy in 2012? Or is this just the more socially permissible way of shoring up the market share that all those knock-off merchants in Lower Manhattan have eroded in recent years? Either way, to all you screenwriters and studio legal departments alike: Maybe stick to Samsonite? [ THR Esq .] Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Kanye West’s ‘Mercy’ Looks G.O.O.D. On 2 Chainz’s Resume

Kanye, Big Sean, Pusha T and 2 Chainz unite on new G.O.O.D. Music single. By Rob Markman Hit-Boy Photo: MTV News Two new Kanye West songs in just two days — now that’s what we call a G.O.O.D. week. A day after dropping “Theraflu,” the Louis Vuitton Don dropped a second single, this time with his G.O.O.D. Music cohorts on Thursday night. “Mercy” not only features rhymes from Yeezy, but Big Sean , Pusha T and 2 Chainz as well. The track, which premiered on Chicago’s WGCI, was released on iTunes at midnight in conjunction with the religious holiday Good Friday. Big Sean and Pusha T set things off, while Yeezy and 2 Chainz bring up the rear lyrically. For 2 Chainz, who recently signed to Def Jam Records, being featured on such a high-profile track has further validated his success of late. “I’m excited about it,” 2 Chainz said on Thursday during a Def Jam-orchestrated press conference call. Though he isn’t signed to West, 2 Chainz said he’s done so much work with Yeezy that he forgot what his “Mercy” verse sounded like. “I’ve done a lot of work with ‘Ye for, like, a year now, and it was one of those songs where I called him and I told him, ‘Man, play my verse over the phone because I don’t remember,’ ” he said. “That’s a good look to add to the r

PETA Calls Kanye A ‘Caveman’ After He Baits Them On ‘Theraflu’

‘What’s draggin’ on the floor is Kanye’s reputation as a man with no empathy for animals,’ PETA tells MTV News in response to Yeezy’s ‘Theraflu.’ By Rob Markman Photo: Theraflu/ Getty Images/ MTV News Not everyone is in love with Kanye West ‘s “Theraflu.” While Yeezy’s fans are fawning over his new track, PETA (or People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) took exception to the song’s hook. “Someone tell PETA my mink is draggin’ on the floor,” Kanye spits in the song’s opening bars and then again on the chorus. Well, the animal-rights organization heard the Louis Vuitton Don loud and clear and fired back with a message of their own on Thursday (April 5). “What’s draggin’ on the floor is Kanye’s reputation as a man with no empathy for animals or human beings,” PETA’s senior vice president Dan Mathews said to MTV News in a statement. “He’s a great musician but doesn’t seem to have the fashion sense to design anything more than caveman costumes.” Seems like PETA also caught wind of ‘Ye’s fashion outing in early March when he presented his fall/winter collection during Paris Fashion Week ; the rapper used quite a bit of fur in his women’s line. PETA hasn’t closed the door completely on Kanye, however. They’re still hopeful that he will eventually have a change of heart. “We keep hoping that one day he’ll find his heart and join evolved style icons — including Russell Simmons, Pink and Natalie Portman — who have dropped animal skins,” Mathews said. The MC’s fashion taste isn’t the only topic addressed on “Theraflu.” Kanye touches on his ex-girl Amber Rose, Wiz Khalifa (Rose’s new man), and his feelings for Kim Kardashian. “The whole industry wanna f— ya old chick/ Only n—a I got respect for is Wiz/ And I’ll admit I fell in love with Kim/ Around the same time she had fell in love with him,” Kanye spits over the Hit-Boy-produced beat. He even threw a perceived shot a Kim’s ex-husband and New Jersey Nets star, Kris Humphries: “Lucky I ain’t have Jay drop him from the team.” What do you think of Kanye’s “Theraflu” track?
