When MTV News caught up with Bieber on the white carpet for the awards show, just before his big number, the teenage superstar said his expectations for the evening were relatively simple: He just wanted everyone to have fun and to be able to show off all the hard work he’s been putting into his dance moves. “This performance is going to be fun. I practiced a lot in the dance studio,” Bieber said. “I’ve been working hard, and I can’t wait to show the fans what I’ve been working so hard on.” Since the other members of Bieber’s musical family — Carly Rae Jepsen and Usher — were also performing, did the trio discuss any feelings of friendly competition or joke around about which performance would be better than the others? “[It’s] not a competition. It’s all love,” Bieber said with a smile. “We’re all a family. Carly is my artist, and I’m Usher’s artist, so it’s kind of cool that we’re all performing here, together. For first-time Billboard Music Awards attendee and performer Jepsen, the goal for the night was to remember to take a moment to soak it all in. “I want to feel happy when I’m onstage,” she said. “A lot of times you kind of get caught up in the performance and then you worry and then it’s over and you think, ‘I didn’t even enjoy it.’ So tonight, after [having a successful] soundcheck this morning, it’s going to be about having fun. At Billboard Music Awards, Jordin Sparks recalls paying tribute to the Bee Gees during her time on ‘American Idol.’ By Kara Warner The Bee Gees Photo: Chris Walter/ Getty Images The music industry lost yet another influential artist Sunday (May 20), with the untimely death of Bee Gees’ member Robin Gibb . The news was met with sadness and shock from the celeb attendees at Sunday’s Billboard Music Awards. They were quick to express heartfelt sentiments to Gibb’s family and friends, as well as weigh in on the huge impact the Bee Gees had on the music industry as a whole. “Oh no!” Jordin Sparks said in shock upon hearing the news. “I thought he was doing better. Barry Gibb [Robin’s brother and fellow Bee Gee], when I was on ‘[American] Idol,’ he was one of our mentors , and it was so amazing to meet him. I actually discovered my love for Bee Gees music through that week, and ‘Too Much Heaven’ and ‘Emotions’ are two of my favorite songs, and ‘Stayin’ Alive,’ of course. Classic. But it’s so sad,” she added. “I just can’t [believe it].” “I definitely listened to the Bee Gees,” Justin Bieber told us. “I’m not too familiar with them, but it’s definitely sad what happened. My heart goes out to him and his family.” “My first memory of the Bee Gees was the film ‘Saturday Night Fever,’ which is one of my favorites,” recalled Max George of the Wanted. “I love the Bee Gees. They’re obviously legends and heroes of ours and people we look up to. It’s a really sad loss. Our thoughts go out to all of his family.” Chart-topper Carrie Underwood remembered discovering the group during her childhood. “My parents listened to the Bee Gees quite a bit when I was little, so I was definitely exposed to them at an early age. They just had a sound that was all their own, obviously, [it was] never duplicated,” she said. “They were very influential on music in general, and it’s very sad to hear about any loss. There have been a lot of legends lost this year, so it’s always sad to see it happen, but they are paying a couple of tributes here [at the Billboard Music Awards], and I know that they’ll be classy and respectful and allow us all to remember them.” Singer/songwriter and recent “Dancing With the Stars” castmember Gavin DeGraw spoke to the group’s influence with their own music, as well as the hit songs they went on to write for other artists. “Let’s talk about the Bee Gees. That’s an iconic group. Not just a great band, but a great group of songwriters,” DeGraw said. “Even long after the Bee Gees’ success on the pop charts, they were still writing songs for other people, huge hit songs. Their talent went far beyond their moment of normal pop success. It is a loss to the music industry and a loss of an iconic group. The late Robin and his brothers helped define a genre and topped the charts in the process. By Gil Kaufman The Bee Gees in the 1970s Photo: Bee Gees Photo by Michael Ochs Archives/ Getty Im Just days after the world lost Queen of Disco Donna Summer , another one of the genre’s royal family, Bee Gees member Robin Gibb, died after a long battle with cancer. Robin, 62, and his brothers Barry and Maurice began their musical career in 1963 and scored a number of hits with sentimental ballads such as “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart” and “I Started a Joke” and their first top 20 single, “New York Mining Disaster 1941.” But it was their work in the late 1970s that would forever cement their memory in music history. After a string of successful albums and singles in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the brotherly trio hit the hard time early in the decade, including a brief period where Robin left the band to go solo because he felt Barry was being pushed to the forefront at his expense. It wasn’t until they revamped their sound on 1975’s Main Course that they hit upon a formula that would make them international superstars and help sell more than 200 million albums over the course of their career. That record turned away from earnest folk and pop to a sound laced with a more soulful, dance-oriented groove, epitomized by the #1 hit “Jive Talkin’.” They followed up with the soundtrack to the hit movie “Saturday Night Fever,” which held the record for the best-selling album of all time until the release of Michael Jackson’s Thriller. With such smashes as “Night Fever,” “How Deep Is Your Love,” “You Should Be Dancing,” “Stayin’ Alive” and “More Than a Woman,” the soundtrack won the Grammy for Album of the Year and sold more than 15 million copies in the United States alone. Though they weren’t even tapped to work on the soundtrack until after the movie had already wrapped, producer Robert Stigwood asked them to try and whip up a few tunes for the film that would soon define the disco era. They dashed most of the additional songs off in just over one weekend, and the rest, as they say, is history. In the years since, the album, whose cover prominently features the trio in their signature white disco suits just above a dancing John Travolta, has sold more than 40 million copies and stands as one of the top five best-selling albums of all time. Robin often sung the lead on the early songs, even though it was Barry who was the ostensible leader of the group later in their career. The siblings’ allegedly testy dynamic was turned into a bizarre recurring skit on “Saturday Night Live” from 2003 to 2011 by Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake called “The Barry Gibb Talk Show.” Though Fallon once told Howard Stern that he really didn’t know how the idea came to him to play Barry as an out-of-control rage-aholic hosting a public affairs show about the day’s news, the comedic combination of the monosyllabic Timberlake as Robin and the pair singing the trio’s falsetto harmonies made for some of the show’s funniest moments. Born in 1949 on the Isle of Man off the British Coast, Robin and his brothers grew up in Manchester, England, but moved to Australia as children. They got their start there performing on television shows as the B.G.’s. It was after the family returned to England in the 1960s that the trio began to score international attention with their melodic three-part harmonies and emotional songwriting. Robin released a trio of solo albums in the 1980s, but neither he nor the group would ever reach the “Fever” heights again. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. Earlier this year, Robin released a classical piece called The Titanic Requiem, recorded with his son, Robin-John, but was too ill to attend an April 10 performance with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Robin’s death is the latest heartache for the family, which has suffered a string of misfortunes, including the 1988 death of youngest brother Andy, 30, and the 2003 passing of Robin’s twin, Maurice, 53. More than 30 years after their global breakthrough, the music created by Robin and his brothers remains a cultural touchstone for each successive generation. Everyone from Eric Clapton to Destiny’s Child, the Cure’s Robert Smith, the Flaming Lips, Elton John, Al Green, Cher, Diana Ross, Tina Turner and Celine Dion have recorded their songs over the years. Family hustle man T.I. has passed on some fatherly advice to new dad Jay-Z In an Interview with Fuse, the rapper, who is the father of six gave the Roc Nation boss some useful tips to bear in mind while he raises his four-month-old daughter with Beyonce, Blue Ivy: “Little girls are going to judge men they meet in the future based off how their father treated them,” said the rapper and star of VH1’s ‘T.I. & Tiny: The Family Hustle.’ “You’ve got to be her first love, her first everything so when she run into nonsense in the street then she’ll know, ‘Nah, my daddy would never do it like that, so this isn’t even worth my time or attention.’” Before adding not to forget one vital thing: “Another piece of advice is enjoy the moments. My name is Budoor, I’m 18, and My Bieber Experience finally happened on April 27 th , 2012 at the Tribeca Film Festival! I’ve been trying to meet Justin for years now! The first time, I went to his concert in Philadelphia November 14, 2010 when I traveled all the way from Bahrain (Middle East) to New York (14 hours worth of plane ride) and took a train to Philly to see his concert for a day. Although I didn’t get to meet him, I saw him in concert and ever since that day, I made it my mission to meet him. I recently moved to Toronto and have been trying to jump at any opportunity I would have to meet Justin. Being unlucky me, I would always miss his appearances in New York or Toronto by a day or by a week because I had to be somewhere else and there were no excuses to miss out on those personal things going on. I was devastated! So for days and nights, I would prepare what I’d say to Justin when I meet him, what pose I’d have in the photo, and what I’d be wearing. Ridiculous, I know, but I cant help it! ANYWAYS, it was the beginning of April 2012 when it was announced that Justin would be attending the film festival on April 27 th and I was going to be done with exams on the 23 rd . I booked a flight for the 26 th purposely so that I could go and see him , but I didn’t tell anyone about this trip just in case I wasn’t going to really see him because I was still unsure as to whether he would go to NYC. April 26 th at night, he tweets that he’s in NYC. After seeing my friends that night, I went to sleep at 4 AM and woke up at 8 AM to go and see Justin at NYU. Grabbed a Starbucks coffee, took a taxi there, and when I reached, there were only 5 other fans there. We stood outside waiting for Justin to come and the crowd got bigger but not as big as I expected. We were hardly 50 fans! Suddenly, Justin’s car drives from the front and goes around the building so he can enter from the back. All the fans ran to go and see him, but us, being the first ones there and first by the rail, decided to stay and wait until he leaves. We were determined. However, the security at the place told us that he wouldn’t be seeing us and that there was no hope. There was a young girl with us who cried loads for not seeing him and we tried to console her, but they kept on saying that it wasn’t sure anyways that we were going to see them . Our answer to that was why would he and Scooter tweet this exact address! It was heartbreaking but I will thank her EVERYDAY! Her crying made them feel bad and they suddenly took us 10 fans to the back on top of the stairs where Justin would first leave. I quickly got my spot and took out my camera. It was about 1 PM now. We were waiting and waiting and I was getting more and more nervous. I was focused on taking that picture with him! First, Kenny came out and I screamed his name. Then came Alfredo and I did the same, but they just walked past and into the car. We kept on waiting and waiting for Justin and random people would open the door and leave, which made it more and more frustrating! And suddenly at around 2, JUSTIN SHOWS UP! OMG, I DIED!!! I screamed so loud and kept on repeating “JUSTIN I LOVE YOU”! I didn’t know what else to do other than attract his attention to take that photo! He walked right up to the guy next to me and then I told him, “Justin, PLEASE A PHOTO!! PLEASE!!” So he comes up, grabs my camera, and takes the photo. Just as I was about to take the camera from him, he’s like “Hold on, let me check if the photo turned out alright”. DAMN THIS KID IS NICE!!! I was blown away at how kind he was.. I mean, I already knew but WOW, who does that?!?! Then he walked away and came back to the people next to me to sign autographs and I screamed to him, “Justin I came all the way from Canada” and he was like, “Canada? Really?! Wow”. And he walked away to take pictures with other fans! IT WAS AMAZING!! I STILL CANT BELIEVE IT HAPPENED!! Justin is the nicest person I have ever met in my life and also very generous. The same day he tweeted he was going to Fuerza Bruta for Usher and I went to look for him, but then decided to go back home to spend time with my friends and give Justin his space. I got what I wanted from him for the day, but it would be amazing to see him again and tell him all about my Belieber stuff! For the love of money…SMH Nanette Packard Sentenced To Life In Prison For Murder Conspiracy With Ex-NFL Player A Southern California woman was sentenced to life in prison Friday for helping her lover, former NFL linebacker Eric Naposki, murder her live-in millionaire boyfriend for financial gain nearly two decades ago. Nanette Ann Packard, 46, was convicted of murder earlier this year in the cold case slaying of William Francis McLaughlin, who made his fortune in medical technologies and was shot dead in his kitchen in December 1994. Packard was living with the much older McLaughlin when he was murdered, but the divorced mother of two was also dating Naposki, a former linebacker for the New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts who worked as a bouncer at a nearby nightclub. Packard convinced Naposki to kill McLaughlin, gave him a key to the victim’s house and told him when he would be home, prosecutors said. She stood to collect $1 million on a life insurance policy and receive $150,000 and free rent for a year at one of his homes if McLaughlin died, authorities said. Packard ended up stealing at least $500,000 from McLaughlin’s estate both before and after his death, Matt Murphy, deputy district attorney, said during trial. As for her accomplice Eric Naposki… Naposki, 45, was convicted of first-degree murder last July. His sentencing has been postponed until Aug. 10. Summer influenced the music industry as a whole, but her influence is especially felt in today’s electronic dance music — which includes current club-anthem king Flo Rida. “I was just looking at something with her months ago,” the “Wild Ones” singer told MTV News. “Today, when I got a text message [about her passing], I thought, ‘Wow, she passed away.’ She definitely is one of those iconic people when it comes down to the dance scene and all that.
