Dear Bossip: He Refers To Our Child As “It” & “Thing” & A Financial Obligation

Dear Bossip , I dated a man off and on for almost 10 years. Our relationship was long distance and it was more off than on. In February, he moved to my city for our relationship and a month later I discovered I was pregnant. He freaked out and told me I had to choose between him and the baby I was carrying. I chose the baby. It wasn’t a hard choice. He began to tell me all the lies and things he had done in the past to get me to see that I did not want to raise a child with him. For example, he was 19 years old when we met, not 21 like he told me. And, he had even married someone during one of the times when we were not together. When I still refused to have an abortion he said he would not be a part of the child’s life and would only do what child support made him. When my daughter was born I didn’t invite him to the hospital. I let him know later and he demanded a blood test. After she was proven his, he wanted to work out child support payments between us, but did not want to see his daughter. I had already started the process of child support when we went to court. The judge ripped him a new on and thoroughly embarrassed him. He left in tears, but I think that it had more to do with the amount that he is required to pay. The judge gave me full custody of our daughter and gave him one supervised visitation day per week. The judge encouraged me to be open to supervised visits if he wanted them. I was given full custody because he sent me several emails begging me to, “kill ‘it’ so we could be together.” And, “This ‘thing’ was ruining our plans.” And, even after she was born he still referred to her as ‘it’ and ‘thing,’ and nothing more than a financial obligation, and the sooner he starts paying the sooner he’ll get done. So, the judge said, “Okay, you just want to pay and have no say, so be it.” That was 3 weeks ago and yesterday he called for his first visit. This visit is in my orders, and it says as long as it does not inconvenience me. So, I am not breaking the law if I don’t allow him a supervised visit. I can supervise him myself or allow him to use a court appointed supervision service. I am completely revolted by this person and I don’t trust him around me or our daughter. I feel like I’d need to be strapped, but I don’t want to have that on around my daughter. The judge only urged me to allow visitation, but said she understood if I had concerns and stopped just short of taking away his rights. I love our daughter so much words can’t describe it, and the selfish part of me is happy that she is legally all mine and that I have complete say so over her life, but I also know that children need both parents. Do you think it is possible that he could change enough to where I could allow him to visit our daughter or be around her alone? Concerned Mommie Dear Ms. Concerned Mommie , This is what I want you to do: I want you to start waking up extra early and watch the morning news shows like the Today Show , and Good Morning America . I want you to notice the current news stories about little children who are with one parent while on visitation and then all of a sudden, in the middle of the night, someone comes into the home and takes the child from their crib. Then, the next day the police are searching high and low looking for a mysterious child abductor who came into the home while everyone was sleeping and took the child, with no visible signs of forced entry, and the police, the community, and the parent who had the child are stumped of why and who would come into the home and take the child. And, you know what happens next? Fingers and evidence start pointing toward the parent who the child was left with, who is crying and acting all hysterical on the news talking about, “Please bring my baby back home. I love my child.” And, the child is found buried or in some lake or river not too far from the house. Then, we learn that the couple was in a bitter custody battle and case, and the only way to get rid of their financial problem, or to hurt and make the other parent angry they harm the child. Now, I ask you, he told you when you were pregnant that you had to choose between him and the baby, and when you chose the baby he told you that he wants no part of the child’s life, and that he would only do what child support made him. Then when the child was born he wanted a blood test, and when she was proven to be his he still didn’t want to see her, and he only refers to your child as ‘it,’ ‘thing,’ and nothing more than a financial obligation; now, I want to know if you think it’s okay to leave your daughter alone with this man? (I’m perched in front of the computer screen in my chair with my hand under my chin waiting for you to respond) You see, this is exactly why I don’t believe in long distance relationships. Especially being with someone for 10 years, and you don’t live in the same state, and he doesn’t put a ring on your finger or ask you to marry him in all that time. You don’t know what MoFo’s are doing while you’re not there. They can tell you anything at night when they do their routine check-in call. Girl, puhlease. Y’all better get out of these long distance relationships in 2012. Besides, who sits around and waits for someone for 10 years, and you live in two different states!?! Where they do that at???? You got to be a ditzy broad to sit and believe that your man was faithful and monogamous all that time while you were in another state. And, then this fool moves to where you are because all-of-a-sudden he decides that he wants to be in a fully committed relationship with you, but soon after you become pregnant and this knee-grow shows his ass. But, hold up, it gets better. He then proceeds to become Mr. Confessional and shares all the lies he’s told you over the past 10 years. My gosh, that must have taken a few days. And, then this fool tells you that he married someone else when you two were supposedly not together at one point. Uhm, ma’am, this was your “Player Free” card to get Angela Bassett on his ass and do a Waiting To Exhale on him. I don’t believe that you can be that oblivious and naïve and be with someone for 10 years, and then they all of a sudden they show you their ass for you to kiss, and you happily oblige. There had to been some clues, signs, hand signals, gestures, smoke signals, Morse Code, Braille inscriptions, or something. But, Ms. Honey, I’m sorry and I have to stress this over again, he revealed to you all of the lies he ever told you over the course of your relationship, and he admitted to being married while you two were on the outs at one point. SMDH! I can’t! I can’t! I can’t! That’s some MF’ing –ish right there! Does he still have two balls? You should have grabbed them and snatched them off!!! And, let me be clear, you are writing me and asking if you can leave your child with him for his visitations? The same man who refers to your child as “it” and “thing” and a “financial obligation.” The same man who asked you to choose between him and your child? The same man who has told you that he wants nothing to do with the child? Again, you’re asking me if you can leave your child with him for his visitations? (Does anyone know how to do a brain cleanse of nut juice?) You see ladies, this is what happens to your brain on d**k. You live in a fog of contentment and so-called love. You’re disillusioned about your relationship, and you’ll keep holding out faith and hope that the man you spent time and energy on will one day, some day, be the man you want him to be. You’ll even consider leaving your child alone with him even after he’s told you that he doesn’t want any parts of her life, or to be acknowledged as the father. You will push and push and push him to be in the child’s life, and then I’ll be watching the morning shows with you on the screen falling out and screaming because someone took your child in the middle of the night while they were at their father’s house. Ms. Lady, don’t you leave your child alone with that man. Don’t force him to be in the child’s life if he doesn’t want to. And, if you need to carry your .45; Magnum; or pistol while you’re supervising the visit with him, then so be it. And, for extra precautionary measure you should have someone from the courts to accompany you. Therefore, both of you can put caps in his ass if he should decide to do something stupid or reckless. I would be watching him like a hawk. He better not make any sudden moves or slight gestures. POW! A bullet in his ass! – Terrance Dean Hey Bossip Fam, what do you think? Surprise! Rupert Murdoch Liked The Descendants

Maybe the apocalypse is nigh: News Corporation kingpin Rupert Murdoch rang in 2012 on Twitter, dashing off his appreciation for in-house treats (“Great oped inWSJ [sic] today on Ron Paul. Huge appeal of libertarian message”), urban atmospherics (“NY cold and empty, even central park. Nice!”) and, naturally, the movies of Fox and its subsidiaries. Good news: The Descendants scored some much-needed awards love! Bad news: Said love came from a man who extolled equivalent appreciation for We Bought a Zoo . Hoo boy, now what? Saw Fox film Descendants. Thank God, one to be proud of. Star Geo Clooney deserves Oscar, maybe film too. Sat Dec 31 23:48:34 via Twitter for iPad Rupert Murdoch rupertmurdoch “Maybe film too”? What an endorsement! Why couldn’t it be more like this: I LOVE the film “we bought a zoo”, a great family movie. Very proud of fox team who made this great film. Nothing a quick hack from inside the office can’t fix, though first I might focus on swapping out Murdoch’s accompanying photo with something that doesn’t look like a near-sighted scrotum with lips. Justin Bieber Kicks Off New Year With New Track

Pop star debuts ‘Happy New Year,’ a swaggerfied slow jam featuring Jaden Smith. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: George Pimentel / WireImage Justin Bieber isn’t new to creating holiday songs using his new-millennium, R&B swagger, as evidenced on his Christmas album, Under The Mistletoe . And this weekend, he gave New Year’s a try. The singer tweeted a New Year’s-themed track, “Happy New Year,” which features his pal Jaden Smith rapping. The slow jam is certainly swaggerfied but also reflective, featuring lyrics that both play up the singer’s pop-star image and look ahead to a more hopeful year. “I’m gonna make your cheeks red when I kiss your neck/Girl I’m never leavin’ ’cause you are the best baby,” he sings. “I wanna give you everything/Never feel ’cause girl you’re coming home with me.” In a spoken breakdown, he says, “2012 is the year to be better, stronger and closer to the people around you. So grab someone special, and just, you know.” Smith also shows some bad-boy personality and proves that rapping runs in the Smith DNA. He raps, ” ‘Cause 2012 is the year of the love/And we gon’ start it off/We can get a plane today and get a car toma’/We don’t do it small at all/No girl tell me what I gotta to do/I can be the beat that you rockin’ to/I can do anything, nothing is impossible, especially with you girl/And I never need a new girl/This love is true girl/Aye welcome to the crew girl.” Not only was Bieber gracing fans with new tracks over the weekend, but he also took the stage during “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve 2012” in Times Square, not far from where his lady love Selena Gomez was hosting “NYE in NYC 2012.” The twosome later partied together at Glass House, E! News reports. A source says, “He…danced with Selena, showing off, picking her up and swinging her around like it was ‘Dancing With the Stars.’ ” Bieber recently debuted another track “Be Alright,” during his holiday special, “Justin Bieber: Home For The Holidays.” He’s expected to drop his new album, Believe , later this year. Drive, 50/50 and the Best Use of Music in Movies in 2011

As everyone looks back on the year that was, I’ve found myself returning to a few moments in the movies that resonated especially well thanks to a phenomenon that achieves soul-stirring status so rarely, though not for lack of frequency: Song choice. I’m not talking about dropping the latest Kelly Clarkson/Natasha Bedingfield ditty into a crap rom-com. I mean the special, skin-tingling magic that occurs when a song is married so perfectly to a character, story, or feeling that the music and the moment swell within us with new, layered meaning. Join me and let’s hash it out: Which movie(s) used music the best in 2011? This is certainly a subjective topic, but consider the lost art of meshing music (songs, not score; pre-existing or original recordings) to film. “Mrs. Robinson” in The Graduate . “Over the Rainbow” in The Wizard of Oz ! Where were our iconic movie-music moments in 2011? For me it comes down to two films: Jonathan Levine’s 50/50 and Nicholas Winding Refn ‘s Drive , two very different offerings with wildly divergent sounds that nevertheless have stuck in my mind and my senses, indelibly tied to the musical choices within. 50/50 : “Yellow Ledbetter” Despite being shot in Vancouver, Jonathan Levine’s 50/50 was about a 27-year-old Seattle man facing cancer, so maybe that bit of intent factored into Levine’s use of Pearl Jam in his end credits; in any case, using the “Jeremy” B-side “Yellow Ledbetter” to close the film was an inspired choice. As Adam ( Joseph Gordon-Levitt ), having survived cancer, tentatively embarks on his first date with Katie (Anna Kendrick) — the start of new possibilities, a new hope — the strains of “Yellow Ledbetter” tentatively begin. And while nobody really knows the actual words that are coming out of Eddie Vedder’s mouth, there’s an optimistic melancholy to the song that just works. Legend has it Vedder wrote the song after walking with a friend who’d just learned his brother had died in the Gulf War, watching as patriotic neighbors shunned the grieving friend; easy to see how thematically this works with Adam’s movie ending, having been in close proximity to death while everyone else — except that one special someone — doesn’t quite understand. Honorable mention: 50/50 ‘s use of Radiohead’s “High & Dry” as Adam learns he has cancer. Drive : “Tick of the Clock”/”Oh My Love” But let’s be honest — the entire Drive soundtrack has been in heavy rotation for me and many others all year, and I’ve raved about it here so much already. But a closer examination of how Refn uses his song selections is worth a look, Cliff Martinez’s throbbing score notwithstanding. Two scenes in particular conjure that magical musical feeling for me. One is the early getaway scene in which the pulsating beat of Chromatics’ “Tick of the Clock” sneaks in as Ryan Gosling ‘s Driver is introduced during his latest getaway job. His clients have taken too much of their five-minute window, the cops are wising up, and the clock is literally ticking; Johnny Jewel’s beat kicks in as the real action starts, accelerating and swelling as this simple job turns into a chase. It’s pure aural adrenaline we hear, approximating the same daredevil juices that flow through Gosling’s calm, coiled being. Like the track itself, Gosling is just so motherfucking cool . It’s a brilliant way to jump into Driver’s life in a snapshot that instantly informs us of who he is, what he does, and that he’s cruising on the razor edge of danger. The better song in Drive , however, is also the most underappreciated track in the bunch, possibly of the year: Riz Ortolani’s original recording of “Oh My Love,” sung by Katyna Ranieri decades ago. Recall the film’s turning point, as the soaring operatic tune plays while Driver finds Shannon (Bryan Cranston) dead, then stalks and confronts Ron Perlman’s Nino — the most imposing of his enemies, even if Albert Brooks’ Bernie Rose emerges as the one to be feared the most — culminating in a moonlit beach attack. Now, in a soundtrack filled with contemporary electro tracks (including College’s “A Real Hero,” the theme song of Drive ) and fleshed out by Martinez’s complimentary score, “Oh My Love” seems an oddity — but it’s the most inspired, and the most brilliant choice of them all. Originally recorded circa 1971 for the infamous Italian exploitation flick Addio Zio Tom ( Goodbye Uncle Tom ), a mondo faux-documentary about American slavery reviled for its terribly misguided content, the song is a beautifully evocative, lyrical ode to the inherent darkness in our nature — but also to the redemptive potential in man. Take a closer look at the lyrics, and watch the sequence in which it appears: Oh my love, look and see The sun rising from the river Nature’s miracle once more will light the world But this light is not for those men Still lost in an old black shadow Won’t you help me to believe that they will see A day, a brighter day When all the shadows will fade away That day I’ll cry that I believe That I believe Oh my love High above us The sun now embraces nature And from nature we should learn that all can start again As the stars must fade away To give a bright new day It’s a sequence featuring a swirl of emotion and action — sadness, hope, revenge, bloodlust — marking the moment when Driver, pushed to the brink, throws any chance for a peaceful happy ending away and instead embraces the darkness within. This is the defining moment for Driver, and for Drive , the instant in which our hero truly becomes an anti-hero, choosing to avenge Shannon and preemptively protect Irene over the possibility of running away with her and Benicio — a future in which they would have run, together, but would’ve always lived in fear of retribution. Ortolani and Ranieri’s song perfectly illuminates Driver’s place in this world of hard, dangerous men, but it also, importantly, gives us hope for his future. So, gauntlet thrown: Do you have a better pick for best song use in the movies this year? Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Kid Cudi ‘Broke Down’ Over Fan Ben Breedlove’s Death

Teenager who posted YouTube videos about his heart condition died on Christmas Day. By Andrea Duncan-Mao Kid Cudi Photo: MTV News Kid Cudi wrote on his blog that he “broke down” over the death of Ben Breedlove, an 18-year-old fan from Austin, Texas, who suffered a fatal heart attack on Christmas Day. Cudi heard about Breedlove after a pair of YouTube videos the fan made went viral before his death. In the videos, Breedlove silently holds up cards that tell the story of living with a heart condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which is a disease that causes the heart muscles to enlarge, making it difficult to pump blood properly. He says he “cheated death” three times: the most recent time in early December when EMTs used shock pads on his chest after his heart stopped. He described a vision of being in a white room and being with his “favorite rapper, Kid Cudi” wearing white suits and feeling “happy and peaceful” and he “couldn’t stop smiling.” He ended his videos with a card that read “Do you believe in God and angels? I do.” After watching the videos, Kid Cudi wrote: “I am so sad about Ben Breedlove. I watched the video he left for the world to see, and him seeing me in detail, in his vision really warmed my heart. I broke down, I am to tears because I hate how life is so unfair. This has really touched my heart in a way I cant describe, this is why I do what I do.” Cudi went on to say, “To Ben’s family, you raised a real hero, he’s definitely mine. You have my love.” Breedlove’s parents released an obituary in the Austin American-Statesman on Thursday (December 29) referencing the videos and writing, “Now the world has come to know our Ben. He was a genius at using the Internet to reach and influence his peers. … In the weeks prior to his death, he had faced some scary situations with his health, but had been given an amazing gift that he was determined to share; first with us, his family, and then, not surprisingly (and generously) with his YouTube audience.” Related Artists Kid Cudi

When the year kicked off, Gomez was already knee-deep in reports that she was dating pop heartthrob Justin Bieber . And while her love life dominated many of the headlines, her thriving acting and singing career also managed to make a few of its own. In March, she dropped her single “Who Says,” and explained that she wanted to empower fans with the feel-good track. “So I thought it was a sweet message,” she explained. “With bullying, with cyberbullying, with all the negativity that is in high school and dealing with things, you’re already trying to figure out who you are; it doesn’t help when people are constantly trying to tear you down. And I’m dealing with it, of course. I’m going through it as well.” As she continued to prep for her 2011 tour and album release, she also focused on her acting career. In April she dropped her comedy, “Monte Carlo.” “It’s a fun movie about three girls who try to go on a vacation,” Gomez said of the big screen summer romp. “And it ends up being horrible and my character gets mistaken for a British heiress, and they figure, ‘What better way to make a horrible vacation amazing than to be a British heiress?’ ” She finished filming her Disney show, “Wizards of Waverly Place,” in May. And after being briefly hospitalized in June, she was back on the scene with her album When The Sun Goes Down . For her next video for “Love You Like a Love Song,” the singer took fans on a wild karaoke-fueled bender through the ’80s. She followed up the clip with stints as the VMA pre-show host and then hosted the MTV EMA in November. Right before the holidays, she released one more video, the party clip for “Hit The Lights.” “This one’s saying that I’m at the point where I’m having fun with it. I’m not trying to be older. I’m not trying to be younger. I’m trying to explain where I’m at in my life, and I feel like that’s what describes it, and having fun with my friends and it was beautiful and it was simple,” she told MTV News. “I thought it was nice.” In 2012, she’s set to film her “raw” role in the drama “Spring Breakers,” and as she looks back on her own 2011 she explained that she felt “humbled” by it all. “I feel like this approach of this year, I wasn’t expecting any of the things that happened,” she said. “And so I just kind of want to go into the end of this year and the beginning of next year just excited and in a good place and not planning anything.” Related Videos Selena Gomez: 2011 In Review
