Lady Gaga’s ‘Edge Of Glory’: A Pop-Culture Cheat Sheet

In her newest video, Gaga pays homage to classic clips of the 1980s. By James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: Getty Images The first thing that strikes you about Lady Gaga’s “The Edge of Glory” video is the fact that it’s steeped in the rich, gauzy traditions of classic pop clips and noticeably missing any of the allegories , agendas or, uh, afterbirth of her previous work. Simply put, “Edge” is an homage to an entire genre of videos that has since gone by the wayside — namely, the eternally soft-focused, ethereal mini-movies of the 1980s, (mostly) pop productions that reimagined cityscapes as dream-like fantasy worlds, where the just-wet streets shone like mirrors, the manholes frothed with steam and no piece of fabric was left un-billowed. These were decidedly big-budget, unapologetically Hollywood things, shot on studio backlots, glowing with million-dollar lighting budgets and given extra grandeur thanks to sweeping, soaring crane shots. They made no attempt to portray reality as anything of the sort — because, much like the songs they accompanied, there was rebellion in that fantasy — or of hiding their excesses. And, not surprisingly, as the decade came to a close, and earnestness began to reign supreme, they slowly disappeared (surely, their big budgets didn’t help their fate either). But with her new clip, Gaga resurrects the epic videos of the ’80s once again. And, seemingly, all at once. There truly are too many nods to the classics to list individually, and really, that’s beside the point. With “The Edge of Glory,” LG is paying tribute not to individual artists, but to an entire genre. Still, there are some whose influence stands above the rest, and we’ve combined them into one handy cheat sheet. Of course, in keeping with her tradition, not all of them come from the 1980s. Because if there’s anything Lady Gaga has proven, it’s that she refuses to be fenced in. Here’s our list: Bonnie Tyler : Welsh-born belter whose better-known videos (like “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and “Holding Out for a Hero”) practically set the standard for the fantastical pop videos of the 1980s. Soft focus, arching crane shots, achingly staged lighting — they’re all there, and they’re all on display in “Edge of Glory” too. Blondie, “Rapture” : One of the earliest examples of the ethereal ’80s (it was released in 1981), the video follows Debbie Harry on a dream-like traipse through the streets of New York City, complete with guest appearances by Fab Five Freddy and a shuffling Uncle Sam (to name just a few). It makes no sense, because it’s not supposed to. Cyndi Lauper : Gaga’s good friend and, along with Madonna, perhaps the premier ’80s video star, Lauper’s classics — be they the good-natured rebellion of “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” or the moody, arty “True Colors” — both seem like spiritual successors to “Edge.” “Fame” : Epochal tale of performing-arts students living and loving in NYC during the early ’80s, it’s spirit and style have long influenced Gaga’s work. With its dance moves and dreamy, freedom-in-the-streets scenes, “Edge” is perhaps the best example of that. “Flashdance” : Prototypical “girl finds escape in dance ” film from 1983, it stars Jennifer Beals as a steelworker/dancer who dreams of a better life. Not only are the same sentiments echoed in “Edge,” but Gaga pays tribute to the film’s most memorable scene — where Beals reclines in a chair and is doused in water — by striking a similar pose outside her apartment building. George Michael : Before he became known for his various, uh, exploits, Michael was the biggest British pop star of the 1980s, and as such, he churned out some appropriately huge music videos. Two of his biggest — “Father Figure” and “Careless Whisper” — seem to have influenced Gaga with their gauzy, steamy portrayals of late-night life in the big city and, in the case of “Whisper,” that balls-out sax wailing. Michael Jackson : You can’t write anything about videos from the 1980s without mentioning MJ, who took the art form to rarely duplicated heights. Usually, his clips were fantastical things, but occasionally, he also got gritty, and it’s those moments (videos like “The Way You Make Me Feel” and “Billie Jean”) that seem to have stuck in Gaga’s mind. “Newsies” : The 1992 Disney musical is most notable for its initial “flop” status and its subsequent rebirth as a cult classic. It tells the story of newsboys on strike in New York City, and in classic scenes like Christian Bale’s performance of the song “Santa Fe,” it takes that struggle to the twisting fire escapes of the city. Sort of like “Edge of Glory,” really. “Rent” : Broadway retelling of Puccini’s “La boh

Katy Perry’s ‘Last Friday Night’ Invite Thrills Hanson

‘We thought we could bring the party — even if it was a fictional party,’ Taylor Hanson tells MTV News of video cameo. By Jocelyn Vena Hanson Photo: Getty Images Katy Perry rounded up quite the cast of cameos for her “Last Friday Night” video . The Marc Klasfeld-directed clip featured “Glee” stars Darren Criss and Kevin McHale, “Friday” singer Rebecca Black, Kenny G, Debbie Gibson and Corey Feldman. Oh, yeah: It also had Hanson as the video’s house band! “We were flattered to be asked, and it was great to be a part of it,” Taylor Hanson told MTV News on Tuesday (June 14). “We had a really good time. It was one of those things that worked out really well. They said [they] needed a band to play the party, and we thought we could bring the party — even if it was a fictional party. “First of all, Kenny G’s an icon, so it was pretty awesome to, in some ways, have been able to perform together,” Taylor continued. “And, again, there’s a little bit of the tongue-in-cheek element to the entire concept of the video. We went in there without taking it too seriously. [Kenny G] was a scholar and gentleman, and it seemed like Katy was fulfilling the idea. She seemed like she was pretty happy with how things were coming together.” Taylor said it was hard to get Perry out of character as the geeky Kathy Beth Terry on set. “She was completely in character and to the point of like, ‘OK, where does Katy Perry begin and this character end?’ ” he recalled. “And, honestly, it seemed like she kind of is a Method person. She seems like she goes in all the way. So we hung out a little bit, and during the performance and everything, obviously, we were all there on set, but she was definitely inside of the character throughout the shoot, which sounds tiring to me.” So what would it take to get the guys to play your house party? “We work for Twizzlers and good times,” Taylor said. “You’d have to have a lot of spandex, a huge tree covered in toilet paper, Kenny G — apparently that’s what it takes to get us to a house party.” And now Katy owes the brothers a cameo in their next video. “I think she has some obligation to spread the love on the next round,” he said. “I don’t know. … We might have to come up with another character.” What did you think of Hanson’s cameo in Katy’s new video? The NBC station in Salt Lake City has informed the network that it will not air the new series “The Playboy Club” because the affiliate does not want to be associated with the Playboy brand. MTV Cancels Kiddie Porn TV Show “Skins” “For us, the issue is about the Playboy brand, something we believe is associated with pornography and something we don’t want to further in our programming,” Michelle Torsak, programming chief at station KSL. The drama series, produced by Ron Howard/Brian Grazer’s Imagine Television (with 20th Century Fox TV), stars Eddie Cibrian as one of the patrons of the original Playboy Club in 1960s Chicago. Halle Berry Re-Invents Her Body & Career In its newscast item Monday morning to announce its decision not to air “The Playboy Club,” KSL noted that its parent company is a sponsor of an Out in the Light Campaign, “which seeks to educate people on problems associated with viewing sexually explicit material.” In that campaign, the company is partnered with a group called Utah Coalition Against Pornography. The chairwoman of the coalition, Pamela Atkinson, noted in a guest editorial on KSL that “on television, in movie theaters, in music, on the Internet, virtually everywhere — you can find an outlet for material which we find pornographic, or at least, objectionable.” “There is a growing body of research,” Atkinson continued, “that shows exposure to such material indeed leads to many personal and social problems.” Which Artist Did You Vote To Bring Back To Life? Selena Gomez Fans Call Her ‘Role Model’ Material

‘There’s not many actresses that can really inspire little girls in the right way,’ one admirer says after teen star’s concert. By Kara Warner Selena Gomez Photo: Jeffrey Mayer/ WireImage Despite the fact that Selena Gomez had to cancel her appearance at the Santa Monica Place mall last Friday, plenty of screaming Selena fans returned to see her rescheduled performance at the mall on Monday afternoon, where Gomez thanked the crowd for their support and revealed that she was “feeling much better” after being hospitalized briefly over the weekend. Following her two-song set, MTV News caught up with a few of Gomez’s die-hard fans, who expressed their love and well-wishes for the 18-year-old star. “I really love her,” young fan Kirsten Mitchell gushed. “I still love her voice, I still love her clothing, and I love everything she did. I love her!” “She’s my role model,” Brianna Akopyn said. “She’s my inspiration.” “It’s not only that she’s famous,” Alexa Kovacs added. “Obviously, we love her because of that, but she helps people, she does things for everything, that’s just awesome to me.” “Ever since ‘Barney,’ I used to watch her on [‘Barney & Friends’] and I’ve been with her since the beginning,” Akopyn revealed. “She’s such a great role model for everyone, including little girls. There’s not many actresses that can really inspire little girls in the right way, and she can.” Speaking to Gomez’s recent illness, Alexandra Pulido said no one could really tell that Selena had been under the weather. “I heard that she was sick over the radio back home where we live, she felt nauseated and stuff,” she said. “But she sang really well today, she didn’t show any of that.” We then asked fans to send Gomez their love via our video camera. “Hey Selena, I love you so much,” Pulido enthused. “I hope you’re doing better. Say ‘Hi’ to Justin [Bieber] for me.” “We love you so much,” Kovacs added. “Thanks for everything, keep it up.” “We hope you’re doing good,” continued Akopyn. “Keep up the good work, we love you.” “Congrats on Justin,” said Kovacs with a smile. “Yeah, he’s a lucky guy,” Akopyn added. Bonnaroo’s Best Bets: 10 Acts To See At The Fest!

Eminem and Lil Wayne top the bill, but there are plenty of other worthy bands to see. By James Montgomery Eminem Photo: John Shearer/ WireImage If, for some reason, you weren’t aware of it by now (perhaps you don’t read Relix magazine on the regular?), the 10th annual Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival kicks off Thursday (June 9) in its spiritual home of Manchester, Tennessee, bringing with it tens of thousands of voracious music fans, a whole lot of creatively griddled arepas and some seriously wasted Wookies , too. And while some say this year’s lineup — topped by the likes of Eminem, Lil Wayne and Arcade Fire — strays too far from Bonnaroo’s generally crunchy roots (you know, aside from bands like Widespread Panic, My Morning Jacket and the String Cheese Incident), the true beauty of Bonnaroo has always been in its ability to provide something for everyone, even if that something is “watching basketball in an air-conditioned theater” (yes, Game 5 of the NBA Finals will be shown). That’s especially true of this year’s bill, too, which is teeming with talent. And so, as we prepare to head down to this year’s ‘Roo, we’ve decided to put together a list of 10 must-see acts, our favorite bands on the bill not named Eminem or Lil Wayne. Because the headliners get all the love (and everyone’s going to check them out anyway) — it’s time to let someone else shine. Best Coast When? Thursday, 7:15 p.m., the Other Tent Why? Their Crazy for You was one of 2010’s best surprises: a hazy, lazy collection of lo-fi surf rock that also managed to capture classic California pop hooks. Most of the credit is due to frontwoman/mastermind Bethany Cosentino, who, in addition to being a cat obsessive (always a plus in our book), wrote the tunes and possesses a preternatural pop sensibility. Did we also mention she’s best pals with Hayley Williams? Dam-Funk & Master Blaster When? Thursday, 1 a.m., This Tent Why? Dusty, lusty, loced-out electro courtesy of Damon Riddick, California’s self-proclaimed “Ambassador of Boogie Funk.” Steeped in the hazy traditions of West Coast G-funk (and the smoove sonics of groups like Shalamar), Riddick’s at his best when the lights are down low, which makes his 1 a.m. Bonnaroo set all the better. As a bonus, he’s backed up by his cracking live band, Master Blaster. Yet another reason why sleep is overrated. Wanda Jackson When? Friday, 5:45 p.m., the Other Tent Why? Why not? She’s the Queen of Rockabilly, a legend who’s been making music for more than 50 years now, scoring no-nonsense country, pop and gospel hits along the way. And she’s showing no signs of slowing down, either. In January, she released The Party Ain’t Over, a whip-smart collection of roiling rockabilly produced by none other than Jack White. Oh, and she once dated Elvis Presley. Swag. Florence and the Machine When? Friday, 6:45 p.m., This Tent Why? By now, you know who she is. And you’ve probably downloaded her album. But if you haven’t gotten the chance to see Ms. Welch (and her Machine) live, well then, there’s probably no better place to do so than at a giant summer festival. No matter how big the stage, there’s an intimacy to the most minimal moments of her set, and when Flo powers up her formidable pipes (like on “Dog Days Are Over” or “You’ve Got the Love”), the outpouring of joy is practically too huge to be contained. So, yes, it will sound pretty excellent in a gigantic field. On drugs. Big Boi When? Friday, 12:45 a.m., the Other Tent Why? Dude, it’s Big Boi. Not only is he Southern rap royalty, but his 2010 album Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty was one of the year’s best , full of wacked-out funk (“Shutterbugg”) and wide-screen weirdness (“General Patton”), cameos by everyone from Yelawolf to George Clinton and enough trunk-rattling funk to fill three Outkast albums. And live, he more than matches its sonic wallop, getting soulful, silly and downright stanky . Portugal. The Man When? Saturday, 5 p.m., That Tent Why? Their upcoming major-label bow, In the Mountain in the Cloud (due July 19), is one of the year’s best rock efforts, brimming with angst, atmosphere and angular, indie-leaning guitars (for a taste, check out the 13-minute short film they just premiered on IFC ). You’ll be reading much more about them in the months to come, so why not check them out at Bonnaroo? You will hold supreme bragging rights over all your friends. Trust us. My Morning Jacket When? Saturday, 8 p.m., What Stage Why? Yeah, we know, they’re not exactly up-and-comers, but if you consider yourself a music fan, then you owe it to yourself to experience MMJ at Bonnaroo at least once in your lifetime. Over the years, they’ve seemingly harnessed the vibes of the fest to produce some downright epic shows, including a near four-hour marathon gig in 2008 that’s become a thing of taper lore. As a bonus, their brand-new Circuital album totally rips. Dr. John with the Original Meters and Allen Toussaint When? Saturday, 12:30 a.m., That Tent Why? The kind of once-in-a-lifetime show that Bonnaroo has become famous for over the years, it’s a trio of New Orleans legends performing the Good Doctor’s classic 1974 Desitively Bonnaroo album in its entirety. And yes, that’s the inspiration for the fest’s name. Combine all that with a slightly magical after-midnight set time (which, as anyone who caught Dr. John’s “Night Tripper” show at Bonnaroo 2006 can attest to, genuinely means something), and you’ve got the makings of a truly epic experience. The Mardi Gras Parade When? Saturday, 2:15 a.m., the campgrounds Why? An annual Bonnaroo tradition, featuring floats, bands and all manner of debauchery. The official word from the fest is that it won’t be happening this year, but we’ve heard the opposite from a few sources. We hope the latter is true, since it’s one of the highlights each year. Guess you’ll just have to show up and see… Robyn When? Sunday, 4:30 p.m., the Other Tent Why? No offense to any of her contemporaries, but for our money, Robyn is the best pop star on the planet , a hard-working, genre-busting force responsible for some of the most memorable electro-tunes in recent memory (and three of the best albums of 2010 , too). Live, the bittersweet Swede harnesses all that hustle for a show that’s sweaty, sexy and, above all, uplifting. Not to be missed. Related Photos Bonnaroo 2011 Lineup Related Artists Eminem Lil Wayne

Justin Bieber, Chris Brown’s ‘Next 2 U’ Video Leaks

Early cut of clip depicts dramatic love stories for both singers intertwined with apocalyptic theme. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Getty Director Colin Tilley promised that the video for Chris Brown and Justin Bieber’s “Next 2 U” would be “big,” and a leaked early cut of the video is just that. The whole thing plays out like a movie, complete with dialogue, drama lots of action, and of course, singing and dancing. It opens with Brown and his love interest dancing, kissing and joking around with one another. Justin Bieber is then seen hugging and kissing his girlfriend and telling her, “I’ve been waiting for you all day,” before presenting her with a necklace. Things get dark when the pair are caught together by her dad, who then takes her away. “I told you not to see him again,” he tells his daughter. Bieber’s story is intercut with Brown’s. Brown is dreaming of his girl when he looks outside and sees that the world appears to be ending around them. Cars are exploding and people are running around in a panic. As the destruction continues, Brown stands in the street singing the love song. Meanwhile, Bieber stands on a rooftop, pining for his lady, also singing the tune. More shots of each of the happy couples play as reminders of times when things weren’t so uncertain. Viewers are reminded of the destruction by the song’s lyrics, “One day when the sky is falling/ I’ll be standing right next to you/ Right next to you.” The couples do eventually make their way back to one another, but it’s not all peachy keen when they do. Just as Brown finally meets up with his love interest after running through the streets, she’s hit by a car. As the video closes out, a big dance break takes place as Bieber’s lady runs around trying to find him. They meet up on the roof where he was singing, and it appears that both couples will somehow survive their tragedies. Before the video leaked, Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun, seemed confident that fans wouldn’t be disappointed by the clip. He tweeted , “Just saw a rough cut of the #NEXT2YOU video with @justinbieber and @chrisbrown ! @ColinTilley is goin’ in!!” What do you think of the rough cut of Bieber and Brown’s “Next 2 U” video?
