Kanye, Janelle & Esperanza Are Fashion Designers “Muses” In W Magazine [PHOTOS]

Here is the original post:

Janelle Monae, Esperanza Spalding, Kanye West and M.I.A. all appear in W Magazine’s latest issue, the Music & Style issue. Proving that the love affair between fashion and music has never been hotter, photographer Max Vadukul captures 10 designers and the musicians who inspire them most. Meet the pairs of “Behind the Muses”: Kanye West & Rodarte Rodarte designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy first met West at one of their runway shows a few years ago, but it was his performance at Coachella this past April that made a lasting impression on the sisters. “It’s one of the most incredible shows you’ll ever see,” says Kate (above, right). “I think it’s because he’s such a visual artist as well.” Since he stepped up to the mic with his 2004 debut The College Dropout, the 34-year-old rapper and producer’s nonstop musical evolution has continued apace with his interest in all things aesthetic: from art and design to his devotion to fashion—usually the latest looks, remixed with characteristic hip-hop bravura. “That mixing of art forms and genres,” says Laura, “that’s something I respond to.” Kanye’s Ex-Fiancee Alexis Talks Amber Rose & Life Out Of The Limelight Esperanza Spalding & Francisco Costa Spalding, the 26-year-old American jazz bassist and singer who outraged Justin Bieber fans by winning the best new artist award at this year’s Grammys, puts an outfit together much the way she does her music. “I make little compositions,” she explains. Lately her look has assumed what she describes as a “quirky, pseudo-intellectual” vibe, pieced together with fitted jackets and ties accessorized with a wild afro. But she can just as easily swing in an elegantly minimalist direction, and it is that element of spontaneity, mixed with soulfulness, that has made a fan of Calvin Klein’s Costa. “I admire her passion and confidence— she is truly a free spirit,” he says. Her ability to speak Costa’s native tongue has only added to his affection: “My favorite part of the shoot was singing together in Portuguese.” Esperanza Spalding Goes Neon For InStyle Magazine [PHOTOS] Janelle Monae & Karl Lagerfeld Monáe’s music may be a baroque blend of funk, soul, jazz, orchestral symphonies, and psychedelic rock, but when it comes to her wardrobe, the Atlanta-based artist likes to keep it simple: black and white tuxedos paired with a pompadour. “It’s transcendent—it never goes out of style,” she explains, adding that she prefers for the color to come out in her performance. And to see her standing beside Lagerfeld, the two of them dressed like twins in their signature starched suits, it is clear she has found a kindred spirit. “We liked each other from the first second on,” says the designer. “Not just because of our style, but also the name: Janelle rhymes with Chanel, no?” Janelle Monae Honored At Essence Black Women In Music Event [PHOTOS] Donatella Versace & M.I.A. It was M.I.A.’s 2007 “Paper Planes” video—with the British firebrand dancing around Brooklyn in an African-print jumpsuit and tiger-striped high-tops—that first caught Versace’s attention. “Her music and style seemed so fresh and innovative,” recalls the designer. Although M.I.A. burst onto the scene in 2005 with her globe-trotting beats and rebel politics, equally striking was her hyper-colored, multiculti look. Before the shoot for this portrait, for instance, the 36-year-old singer—who once cited Libyan President Moammar Qaddafi as a fashion icon (“I’d love to raid his wardrobe,” she noted)—insisted on two-tone lips and floral nail art, and wanted the tips of her platinum locks dyed a vivid coral. As Versace puts it: “She is a total artist.” Versace For H&M Collaboration Coming This Fall! [PHOTOS] J oan Smalls Channels Michael Jackson & Tupac For W Magazine [PHOTOS]

Britney Spears Vs. The Paparazzi: Best Music-Video Moments

Brit’s ‘I Wanna Go’ video is hardly the first time she’s taken aim at the prying tabloid media. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears in her “I Wanna Go” video Photo: Jive Britney Spears is taking a stand against the paparazzi in the music video for her new single “I Wanna Go,” which premiered online Wednesday morning (June 22). In the Chris Marrs Piliero-directed clip she slings a microphone their way, knocking them off their perch. But it’s hardly the first time Spears has taken a tongue-in-cheek approach to making a statement about the tabloid media. In fact, since early on in her career, Spears has examined her love-hate affair with the prying lens of the paparazzi. After bursting on the pop scene in the late 1990s with a naughty girl-next-door image that made her a star, Spears learned that fame would come with lots of attention from the press. And, as in “I Wanna Go,” she has made it a point to play with that relationship in her videos. Here, we look back on a few of our favorites. “Lucky” Britney first gave fans some insight into her celebrity life in this video, dating back to 2000 and released on her second smash album, Oops! … I Did It Again. In the candy-colored, Dave Meyers-directed video, Spears plays a melancholy movie star who wants nothing more than to have a little fun. “Overprotected” A year after the “Lucky” video, Spears busted loose in this video from her Britney album. After breaking free from her hotel room, which is being watched by then real-life bodyguard Big Rob (that’s right, the Jonas Brothers’ Big Rob ), she dances in the rain and her hotel lobby and then throws one big party for her girls in a large limo. “Everytime” She shows the darker side of fame in the video for “Everytime.” By the time 2004 rolled around, Spears was not only In the Zone, she was frequently in the gossip pages. Her personal life was gossip fodder and in the clip, Spears plays a pop star whose public fight with her beau (played by Stephen Dorff) gets the paparazzi worked up, leading to an injury that may or may not bring about her untimely end. “Piece of Me” Spears had more fun in 2007 on the Blackout single “Piece of Me.” Released during a transitional time in both her personal and professional life, Spears poked fun at herself, dancing around a nightclub’s bathroom as magazine headlines about the pop star flash across the screen. “If U Seek Amy” The video for this 2009 single played up the song’s controversial title ( say it slowly, really slowly ) using faux news briefs. Released on her Circus album, the clip for “If U Seek Amy” played up Spears’ many sides: from good-natured mom to sexy party girl. “Hold It Against Me” This was Britney doing the thinking man’s take on the media. 10 Things We Owe Our Children

A parent’s number one job is to love their child unconditionally; and, for most of us, that comes easily. Difficulties come with figuring out to how to best demonstrate our love and effectively communicate it to our children. Love is not an emotion but an action and children have to see their parent’s love at work. We are inclined to love our children in much the same way our parents loved us, good and bad. But, we only owe our seed the good as the goal is for every generation to get better. Love isn’t always gentle and it doesn’t always speak in a soft voice, but it is selfless and committed to generating positive outcomes. The act of love encompasses many things and it’s important to tackle areas of weakness individually. These are a few of the components we should focus on to help convey love to our children… Continued at MadameNoire.com

Britney Spears’ Tour ‘A Real Buzz’ For Openers Nervo

‘The nerves are gone now, and I just want to own it more,’ Nervo’s Liv tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears Photo: Jeremy Cowart/ WireImage The Femme Fatale Tour kicked off Thursday night to rave reviews, with critics giving Britney Spears props for her over-the-top stage show. The show is all about the ladies, thanks to opening slots from Nervo , Jessie and the Boy Toys, as well as Nicki Minaj, with Spears acting as the show’s head mistress. MTV News caught up with Liv from the DJ act Nervo on Friday (June 17), nearly 24 hours after their first warm-up gig for Ms. Spears. “I’ve got to say, it was a real buzz for us to open the show; that’s the selfish highlight,” she told MTV News. “We were honored to be there. I thought the crowd got our house music.” Liv had the pleasure of finally seeing Spears in concert for the first time and couldn’t help but rave about her. “I thought she was brilliant. It was my first time seeing Nicki, as well, and she was brilliant,” she said. “I love ‘Slave 4 U.’ I was really happy she was playing her oldies.” When fans first heard that Spears and Minaj would be touring together, no one knew how the two would mesh. But, as it turns out, Liv said they work just perfectly. “They’re both very strong women. Britney was the same old Britney we love,” she said. “They complemented each other.” In fact, there’s a real sense of camaraderie on the road. “The nerves are gone now, and I just want to own it more,” she said. “It really does [feel like girl power]. It’s very exciting. We’re all girls. This business is crazy, and it’s fun we can all be in it together. “It really is a machine. We’ve done RV tours before with club DJs, and this is so far and beyond from the RV tours,” she said. “The catering is insane; three-course meals, three times a day. I’ve never seen what it takes to be a part of one of these pop shows, and it takes so much work. It’s full on. It’s great. It’s amazing that she can take it all in stride all these years later.” Will you be checking out Britney’s latest tour? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Britney Spears
