The answer came in January 2010, when news broke that the British actor was eyeing a role in Fox’s “Water for Elephants.” Ever since, MTV News has been following anything and everything connected to the film, an adaptation of Sara Gruen’s best-selling novel. Now the movie is set to hit theaters and we’re gathering all our coverage into one place for a “Water for Elephants” cheat sheet. Training When word broke of Pattinson’s intention to play a veterinary student named Jacob in “WFE,” Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon was already signed on to play Marlena, a beautiful circus performer who’s married yet falls in love with Jacob when he joins the troupe. Sean Penn was originally eyeing the role of Marlena’s husband, but the part eventually went to another Oscar winner, . With Pattinson’s new part came a new haircut: Goodbye, Edward Cullen’s messy locks , hello Jacob’s cropped do. The first shot of Pattinson in action arrived in June, when a photo of him climbing a train popped up online. More pics followed, including looks at Reese and Rob sharing a smooch . Paparazzi weren’t the only ones paying attention to the production. Fans were everywhere, too. “The only thing I can compare it to is when Leo was in ‘Titanic,’ ” Witherspoon told MTV News in December. “It was that kind of fervor about a person. The women lining up outside the set — it was just unbelievable — till 5 o’clock in the morning waiting to just glimpse him.” Rehearsal Shortly after our chat with Reese, Fox released the first “Watermfor Elephants” trailer , highlighting the film’s story of a circus-centered love triangle between Jacob, Marlena and Marlena’s cruel husband, August/. That, and Rob’s many smoldering looks . A second trailer debuted in March, showing a darker tone and, perhaps to lighten the mood, Reese and Rob’s kiss. As the film’s release date neared, MTV News announced a live-stream event with Pattinson . The star debuted a new clip from the film and stuck around for a 30-minute chat, touching on everything from cursing on the set of “Breaking Dawn” to an awkward “WFE” love scene with Reese. “The love scene in this, I was doing it when I had a really bad cold,” Pattinson explained . “I’m not generally that awkward doing stuff apart from when I’ve got my belly coming out. But my nose is running all over the place and it was in one of the additional photography scenes, and Reese had this wig on, and literally, I was wiping my nose on her wig.” Performance The live chat wouldn’t be our only chance to talk with Rob and the rest of the cast. We met back up with him at a press event a few weeks later. This time around, Pattinson discussed love at first sight (he believes in it) and his preferred circus job (manual labor). “I find it very satisfying. I like stacking boxes and stuff like that,” he said. “And also I looked at all the background guys who were putting up a tent as a part of a scene and they were doing this stuff, like in ‘Dumbo,’ and it looked like something appealing about that, being a part of this team that creates this town in two days, and it’s quite cool. And I like the idea of being the absolute everyman as well.” And, just in case you didn’t get enough of RPattz, MTV News presented a live stream from the “Water for Elephants” red carpet in New York. Turns out, Rob barely made it to the event. “It was a mad rush to get here!” Pattinson said of trying to leave the set of “Breaking Dawn,” which wrapped production hours before the premiere. “I was leaving at, like, one o’clock in the morning. ‘Water for Elephants’ actress reveals, ‘He did have a very runny nose.’ By Aly Semigran, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Reese Witherspoon Photo: MTV News On camera, the love scenes between Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson in their period drama “Water for Elephants” — which opens in theaters Friday (April 22) — look glamorous and romantic. Behind the scenes, however, it was anything but. Never mind that both stars were involved in relationships during the filming of the big-screen adaptation ( Witherspoon with her now-husband, Jim Toth , and Pattinson with speculated girlfriend Kristen Stewart ) but the 24-year-old actor also happened to be fighting a nasty cold. As the “Twilight” hunk revealed during his “MTV First: Robert Pattinson” special, “The love scene in [‘Water for Elephants’]: I was doing it when I had a really bad cold.” He went on to divulge, “My nose is running all over the place, and it was in one of the additional photography scenes, and Reese had this wig on, and literally, I was wiping my nose on her wig.” And when his Oscar-winning co-star sat down with us , she confirmed it was just as unsavory as he described. “He did have a very runny nose, yeah,” she recalled, adding, “It wasn’t appealing; it wasn’t pleasant.” Still, the 35-year-old actress knows that even a runny nose wouldn’t deter Pattinson’s most fervent fans. Her advice for anyone planning on getting close to RPattz on or off camera: “Bring a Sudafed!” However, when Witherspoon isn’t dispensing advice on how to get through a love scene with RPattz, she’s enjoying domestic bliss with her husband. In fact, the newlyweds have been finding themselves in the same situation as many couples: compromising what shows to watch on television. When the story first broke about Matthew Bellamy getting Kate Hudson pregnant , many people did not know who he was, or that they were even together. Now, Hudson herself has opened up about their love story, including sharing how they met and offering a peek into what led to a surprise pregnancy. “You always hear people say, ‘I never thought this would be the person I would end up with,’ but I don’t think you ever really know,” the star says . Of the musician (he’s Muse’s frontman), she says, “I love that Matthew knows how to express himself. He shows his love. He communicates.” She was watching Radiohead’s Thom Yorke – also a rumored boyfriend of hers back in the day – with a guy from high school when they met. “We realized that we had met a few years earlier, in Australia. Then I got distracted and said, ‘I’ve got to find my friends; I don’t know where they went.’ He just looked at me and said, ‘Come on, I’ll take care of you.'” “That’s when I went, ‘Wait a minute, who are you?'” Bellamy eventually asked Hudson for her number, and the rest, as they say, is history. But what kept her so interested in those early days? “Matthew was polite and immediately protective, which for somebody like me who’s all over the place – one minute I’m over here and the next I’m over there – is important.” Plus, she adds, “He is just an amazing person.” That said, Hudson didn’t feel he was “the one.” “In the beginning I felt like, okay, this is going to be heavy. Am I prepared for this? Because it had been a while, and I wasn’t looking for that,” she says. “But I just couldn’t stay away. I wanted to talk to him and be with him all the time. On our first dates we would take long walks and talk the entire day.” Soon enough they were in love – and, says Hudson, pregnancy seemed a natural progression, even though it wasn’t exactly what you’d call planned. “Well, it wasn’t like we didn’t know what we were doing,” says Husdon. “There were no ovulation kits involved. With ‘Fight’ short film set to premiere Wednesday (April 20), here’s a look back at the beer-soaked history of the 1986 video. By James Montgomery Adam Yauch, Ricky Powell and Mike D in 1986 Photo: MTV News You get the feeling that, back in their hell-raising License To Ill heyday, the Beastie Boys derived some sort of perverse pleasure from blindsiding unsuspecting interviewers with profanities or non sequiturs. Or at least by dumping beer on them. Sufficed to say, they’ve mellowed some in recent years ( their vocabulary has improved , too), but back in the day, the Beasties lived to torment the media, and they did so by any means necessary. Take, for example, this rather revelatory bit of tape shot on December 31, 1986, at MTV’s 6th annual “Rock ‘N Roll New Year’s Eve Ball” (a party so huge that both Brian Setzer and the Georgia Satellites were in attendance). In it, a poor MTV News field producer corners the Beasties and attempts to ask them about their plans for 1987 — plans that included a headlining tour and a new video to shoot for “No Sleep Till Brooklyn” — and gets doused by a Budweiser, making a valiant attempt to shield the microphone from a soaking, with little success. And while it’s oddly compelling to watch a train wreck like this unfold, the reason we dug the tape out of our archives occurs just moments later, when the same producer, still wet with cheap beer, asks the MCs about their infamous “(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party)” video — the same video that serves as the inspiration for the band’s “Fight For Your Right Revisited” short film , which premieres Wednesday (April 20) at midnight on MTV2, mtvU and Palladia. Specifically, the interviewer asks the Boys about casting “the geeky guys” for the video, which gives them the opportunity to introduce “the man who played the main nerd,” their photographer-friend Ricky Powell (presumably right around the time “your girl got di–ed” by him.) And then, they pour beer on his head, too. But not before Powell curses on-air and then professes his love for “Black women with blonde hair.” So, yeah, it’s a pretty amazing bit of tape, even 25 years later. Now, Britney Spears is feeling the Indian love from entertainment website Desi Hits! and the Culture Shock production team, who put their Bollywood-style spin on “Till the World Ends.” “Check out this incredible Desihits remix of Till The World Ends. I LOVE it!!!” Britney tweeted on Monday about the track. The swirling take on Spears’ hit tune boasts a “Punjabi breakdown” section that features some South Asian-sounding vocals from Culture Shock’s Lomaticc and Sunny Brown. The track includes some added Desi flavors courtesy of dholki, dhol and tumbi beats, which are common in Indian music. “Our goal was to take Britney’s smash hit single and give fans a total Desi adrenaline rush,” Culture Shock’s Baba Kahn explained. “The result is a Culture Shock musical Desi roller coaster that hopefully everyone around the world will want to join.” It seems that Spears’ camp was crucial in orchestrating the remix. “We wanted to build an even greater connection between the world’s biggest pop star and one of the world’s largest audiences,” Mark Flaherty, senior vice president of Jive Label Group, says of the reimagined tune. “Britney has been engaged with South Asian culture for many years. From the groundbreaking Bollywood-inspired remix of ‘Me Against the Music’ to her recent collaboration with Indian fashion designers Falguni and Shane Peacock on the ‘Hold It Against Me’ video, she has embraced the incredible sights and sounds of this vibrant community throughout her career.” The original version of “Till the World Ends,” the second single from Britney’s Femme Fatale album, was produced by Dr. Luke, Max Martin and Billboard.
