Toya’s show ‘Toya’s Family Affair’ debuted last week as BET’s highest rated returning series in history with 1.5 million viewers. And according to Toya , the program that goes in depth about her mother’s drug problem and her strained relationship with her previously incarcerated brother is both a gift and a curse. While she enjoys having people relate to her, she’s weary of people who feel like they really know her on a personal level. She tells Rolling Out, “It’s a gift and a curse, but a blessing. Usually when we think of adoptions we do not think of African Americans children as being key in adoptions. New numbers are proving this to be the complete opposite. There are dozens of children who need loving homes and care. We cannot let these children just fade into the system to be forgotten. With 130,000 children adopted each year in the USA, researchers find growing numbers involve kids whose race is different from their parents’. About 84 percent of children adopted from other countries are either trans-racial or trans-ethnic. The most common type of adoption in the USA is from foster care, which makes up 68% of adoptions, compared with 17% for infants adopted domestically and 15% from international adoption, Pertman says. Star opens up about eating disorder while teaming up with Seventeen to help others. By James Dinh Demi Lovato Photo: Hearst Communications/The Jed Foundation After her sudden exit from her tour with the Jonas Brothers and a three-month stay at a treatment center , Demi Lovato is looking to use her own personal struggles to help other troubled teens. Earlier this week, she announced she was teaming up with Jed Foundation’s Love Is Louder Than the Pressure to Be Perfect campaign and Seventeen magazine, and in a PSA for the campaign released Thursday (April 14), the 18-year-old singer/actress opens up about the movement and advises others where they should turn to when feeling burdened. “There’s a ton of pressure out there to meet impossible standards,” Lovato says sitting before a white backdrop. “To look right, be smart, be thin, talented and popular. And many of us feel like we have to be everything to everyone, but it doesn’t have to be that way. When the pressure to be perfect is overwhelming, find an outlet. I love to paint, but there are also other ways to relieve that pressure. You can sing, dance, act, draw, shoot photos, write or run.” Lovato, who admitted in the upcoming issue of Seventeen that she does in fact struggle with an eating disorder, explains in the video that there are many people who deal with the same issues and advises fans to spread the Love Is Louder message. “If you’re going through a dark period, remember that you’re not alone,” she continues. “You can get help and you can feel better, so join me in spreading this message by snapping a photo of yourself with the message love is louder and the pressure to be perfect.” Courtney Knowles, executive director of the Jed Foundation, spoke to MTV News about why he believed the teen star was the perfect candidate to represent the Love Is Louder movement. (MTV teamed up with the Jed Foundation and actress Brittany Snow last fall to launch Love Is Louder in response to teen suicides connected to bullying.) “I think her story really resonates with a lot of girls. I think it already did,” Knowles said. “There had been a lot of speculation about what she had been through and … the fact that she’s so brave, that she’s willing to talk about these sensitive issues openly is really important, because part of the problem is so many teenagers don’t want to seem like they’re failing at anything, so they don’t talk about this. And without addressing the problem, you can never feel better.” As for whether Lovato will participate in any future Love Is Louder campaigning, Knowles revealed that the he and her team are still working out the details. “We don’t have a specific schedule yet, but she certainly is onboard to spread the message and for it to reach more teenage girls and young women,” he said. Lovato is also serving as a contributing editor for Seventeen, where she’s expected to write bi-monthly posts on Seventeen.com and contribute to the magazine’s coverage of issues facing teen girls. Knowles told MTV News that Lovato and Seventeen approached the organization about teaming up to create “something bigger than just the story.” In the May issue of the mag, which hits news stands April 19, the Disney starlet opened up about her battle with an eating disorder and what she’s learned since her days leaving treatment. Asked whether she ever felt pressure to pick up old habits, the star admitted “there have been times” when she was tempted to get rid of her dinner. “But I will deal with it for the rest of my life because it’s a life-long disease,” said the teen star. “I don’t think there’s going to be a day when I don’t think about food or my body, but I’m living with it, and I wish I could tell young girls to find their safe place and stay with it.” Since leaving treatment for “emotional and physical issues” in late January, Lovato confessed that she has given herself “a lot of freedom.” “I have come to realize that just making yourself happy is most important,” she continued. “Never be ashamed of what you feel. On Wednesday (April 13), Reuters reported that Universal is in negotiations to pick up the screen rights to the Broadway version of “Idiot,” and has hired Michael Mayer — who directs the stage production — to shoot the movie version. Reuters also reported that Dustin Lance Black, the Oscar-winning writer of 2008’s “Milk,” is “in discussions” to write the screenplay, and that Tom Hanks will serve as producer on the film, along with Green Day themselves. (Hanks and his business partner Gary Goetzman were producers on the film version of the Broadway smash “Mamma Mia!,” the musical based on the songs of ABBA.) All of that means that, after a voyage that started way back in 2004 — when Billie Joe Armstrong told MTV News that the bandmembers were “talking” to screenwriters about adapting the album for the big screen — American Idiot could finally find its way to your local multiplex. In 2006, Armstrong promised fans that the film version of Green Day’s hit album would “definitely … happen,” but the band instead turned their attention to creating their next album (2009’s 21st Century Breakdown ) and a stage version of Idiot, which premiered at Berkeley, California’s Berkeley Repertory Theater in ’09 before heading to Broadway. Still, they remained adamant that a film would be coming, with Armstrong telling The Associated Press that it would echo the feel of cult classic “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” Hanks’ reported attachment to the project is also interesting, considering that last year, Green Day dismissed his involvement as “just talk.” A spokesperson for Green Day could not be reached for comment by press time. Meanwhile, the “American Idiot” musical will officially end its Broadway run on April 24, with Armstrong reprising his role of St. Jimmy. However, the songstress confirmed to Ryan Seacrest on Wednesday (April 13) that while there were discussions about her joining the show, she couldn’t put her career on hold long enough to commit. “I just heard about it actually, but, yes, it’s something that I would have loved to do, actually. But our schedule doesn’t allow and it’s a demanding schedule to be on that show. You have to be around months at a time, which is impossible for me.” What was easier to schedule was getting Britney Spears on the remix of her track “S&M.” “It was automatic; it was a go. She was great, really professional,” she said of the track, which was released earlier this week. “I think that’s what makes this collaboration so successful: It’s two female artists within the same genre of music. We have similar sounds. It’s very unexpected to see two artists collaborate and get together. The fans are really appreciative of that.” She added that while the song is “very provocative,” she thinks people need to take the lyrics and redirect the message to be about something more than just sex. “When I first heard this record, I automatically knew those words didn’t mean [that] … it was about my love-hate relationship with the media,” she explained of the message, one that Spears can also certainly relate to. “I knew what the song was to me and I wanted to make that point in the video. The video got banned in a lot of countries even though I didn’t think it was that raunchy. I thought it was fun and quirky. I really didn’t expect the song to go this far.” Rihanna’s upcoming busy schedule includes performing at the Billboard Music Awards next month and co-headlining the V Festival with Eminem in the U.K. this August. Such is the case with the leading ladies of “Arthur,” in which Russell Brand stars as the aforementioned reckless billionaire, with Helen Mirren playing his very patient nanny, Hobson, and Greta Gerwig his love interest, Naomi. When MTV News caught up with Mirren and Gerwig recently, we asked them how they would react to meeting Arthur in real life. “Oh, [I would] fall in love with him,” Gerwig enthused. “He’s so funny!
