Crystal Bowersox, Alanis Morissette Unite For ‘You Oughta Know’ On ‘American Idol’ Finale

Duo performs Morissette’s mega-hit after Bowersox’s solo performance of ‘Ironic.’ By Eric Ditzian Crystal Bowersox and Alanis Morissette perform together on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: FOX Back in February, Crystal Bowersox took the “American Idol” stage to perform Alanis Morissette ‘s “Hand in My Pocket.” It didn’t go so well. Simon Cowell accused her of sounding like a thousand buskers outside a thousand different subway stations. Bowersox got her revenge on Wednesday night’s (May 26) finale when she united with Morissette for a duet that brought the crowd at the Nokia Theatre to its feet. The “Idol” finalist got the performance started with a solo take on Morissette’s “Ironic,” a song that reached the #4 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. She then turned dramatically toward the back of the stage and welcomed her fellow artist onto the stage for a duet of the Grammy-winning best-seller “You Oughta Know,” another cut off Morissette’s 1995 album Jagged Little Pill. As Morissette strode out under the bright blue lights of the “Idol” stage, the two singers exchanged verses, crisscrossed the stage and finally met in the middle, voices wailing, smiles wide. Buskers they weren’t. And coming on the night when Bowersox could be crowned the victor of the ninth season of “Idol,” the performance was not without its share of ironies. After Cowell dismissed Crystal’s effort in February, the singer bounced back to establish herself as one of the show’s undeniable front-runners the very next week when she busted out a killer version of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Long as I Can See the Light.” She hasn’t looked back since. And Bowersox has come to count Cowell as one of her biggest supporters. On Tuesday’s show, Cowell praised Bowersox’s performance of “Up to the Mountain,” saying, “I thought that was by far the best performance and the song of the night. And since this is going to be the final critique I’m ever going to give, I would just like to say that was outstanding.” Related Photos Crystal Bowersox’s ‘American Idol’ Experience ‘American Idol’ Season Nine Performances Related Artists Alanis Morissette

‘American Idol’ Finale: Lee DeWyze Upsets Crystal Bowersox

A cavalcade of performers hit the finale stage, including Christina Aguilera, Janet Jackson and Bret Michaels. By Gil Kaufman Lee DeWyze Photo: Amy Silverman They auditioned together in Chicago last summer, and they’ve become good buds in the nine months since. They’re both 24 years old and were vying to be the first Midwesterner to win the “American Idol” title. One, Ohioan Crystal Bowersox, was the odds-on favorite to win it all for most of season nine, while the other, low-key Illinois-bred Lee DeWyze, came on strong down the stretch and threatened to pull out an upset victory. On Wednesday night (May 26), when all the hoopla, oldies acts and teary goodbyes to departing judge Simon Cowell were finally said and done, it was DeWyze who emerged victorious in an “Idol” upset for the ages. While Bowersox hugged him and looked loose and relaxed, DeWyze seemed gripped by nerves as he awaited word from host Ryan Seacrest. When the verdict was read, the former paint-store clerk and high school dropout with a musical dream bent over and looked like he was going to be sick. He was quickly swarmed by the top 12, emerging with a smile and the outburst: “Oh my God!” When Seacrest asked how it felt to be the new American Idol, DeWyze laughed nervously. “I don’t know! This is amazing. Thank you guys so much for everything. Thank you. Thank you,” he said breathlessly, gesturing to the crowd with tears in his eyes and then hugging Bowersox and telling her that he loved her. “I’ve never been happier in my life,” he added before breaking into his coronation song, “Beautiful Day,” as a rain of sparks, confetti and lasers filled the air in the Nokia Theatre. It was an unlikely ending to an uneven season with what many considered the shallowest “Idol” talent pool in memory and which suffered from a nearly 10 percent decline in viewership but is still the #1 show on TV. Season nine saw the addition of fourth judge Ellen DeGeneres, whose quips and twisted food metaphors sometimes fell flat, as well as the departure of Cowell, considered the heart and soul of the judging panel. But before DeWyze could celebrate the realization of his long-sought musical dream, the two-hour show trotted out the usual assortment of time-fillers. The battling finalists first took the stage in burgundy Hogwarts-style school uniforms, which made sense a short time later as former Michael Jackson guitarist Orianthi shredded the opening licks to Alice Cooper’s season-appropriate summer anthem “School’s Out,” which the top 12 lip-synched alongside a kids’ choir with dead eyes and the Coop himself. Last year’s champ, Kris Allen, came by to sing his new ballad, “The Truth,” and one of the show’s biggest stars, Carrie Underwood, showed the newbies how it’s done with her sassy new single, the Kara DioGuardi co-written country rocker “Undo It.” Third-place finisher Casey James got one of the most plum assignments of the night, singing Poison’s “Every Rose Has Its Thorn,” with accompaniment by none other than surprise guest Bret Michaels , making his first stage performance since a string of recent health crises including a heart scare and a nearly fatal brain hemorrhage . Some of this season’s castoffs got one more chance to shine, with shaky vocalist Siobhan Magnus teaming up with Teflon teen Aaron Kelly for the Bee Gees’ “How Deep Is Your Love,” which featured a cameo from the living Gibb brothers, Robin and Barry. Michael “Big Mike” Lynche hooked up with Michael McDonald for the Doobie Brothers’ “Takin’ It to the Streets,” while the top five girls joined Crystal for Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful” which morphed into the grinding “Stronger.” Aguilera herself showed up halfway through and eased into her new piano ballad “You Lost Me,” which she sang while standing on a pedestal covered with light bulbs and wearing a black catsuit and spangly tights. The top 12 harmonized on Janet Jackson’s “Again,” with Ms. Jackson herself strutting out in flowing black Elvira dress and her new short hairdo to take center stage and sing the hushed balled “Nothing.” She later stripped off the dress to reveal a skintight black bodysuit for a strut through her signature hit “Nasty.” DeWyze drew the relatively long straw by leading the top five men in a medley of Hall & Oates songs, including “I Can’t Go for That” and “Maneater,” before the real-deal duo came out and killed it on “You Make My Dreams Come True.” DeWyze later joined the band Chicago for a medley of their hits, including “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?,” “If You Leave Me Now” and “25 or 6 to 4.” But the night’s breakout moment began with Bowersox singing Alanis Morissette’s “Ironic” in her blues-mama voice before Morissette herself emerged and the two women circled each other and snarled out the lyrics to Alanis’ breakthrough 1995 hit “You Oughta Know,” on which their powerful voices perfectly meshed. The night’s final performance found Bowersox and DeWyze harmonizing on the Beatles’ “With a Little Help From My Friends” with an assist from the man whose cover of the song is the second-most definitive version, ’60s rocker Joe Cocker. And on Cowell’s final night, former right-hand lady Paula Abdul came via tape to participate in a montage honoring Cowell’s top moments on the program. Comedian Dane Cook debuted “The Things That Simon Said,” a touching acoustic ballad that strung together some of his most famous insults, including, “You came across like a background singer for a background singer.” He almost got the whole song out before a parade of the show’s most famous rejects came out and loudmouth head loony Ian Benardo stole the microphone from the joke man. There was also the obligatory visit from one of this season’s freak-show wash outs, General Larry Platt, who sang a beat-infected version of “Pants on the Ground” accompanied by a troupe of pants-sagging hip-hop dancers and, of course the ultimate “Idol” joke, William Hung. Later on, Abdul took the stage and gave an extended monologue about her relationship with Cowell, who she said brought “immeasurable joy” to her life, saying the show would not be the same without him — but that it will go on. Original Idol Kelly Clarkson also made an appearance, teaming up with fellow winners Underwood, Allen, Fantasia, Ruben Studdard, Jordin Sparks and Taylor Hicks for “Together We Are One,” which featured backup from a cavalcade of past top 12 finishers paying tribute to Cowell, who smiled as Abdul snuggled in his lap. The acerbic judge then took the stage, admitting he was more overcome with emotion than he expected to be. “What Paula said is true: The show goes forward. It will be different,” he said. “But I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the support, the fun and your sense of humor.” Cowell then kicked it back to fans in the audience, saying they were the ultimate judges of the show and that they’ve done a great job over the years. “It’s been a blast. Thank you.” As much as Cowell’s exit dominated the conversation, the night ultimately belonged to DeWyze, who kept the three-season streak of male winners alive. And, like small-town good-guy singer Kris Allen’s victory last year over power vocalist Adam Lambert, DeWyze’s coronation proved once again that sometimes it’s slow and steady that wins the race. As Simon said Tuesday night, America loves an underdog story, and even after being vocally lapped by Crystal on Tuesday, and for much of the season, the win went to the humble paint-store clerk — and nobody seemed more surprised by the outcome than Lee himself. Slipknot’s Paul Gray Remembered By Megadeth, Korn And Others

Lamb of God, 3 Inches of Blood, Suicide Silence bandmembers and more also pay tribute to Slipknot bassist. By Ryan J. Downey Slipknot’s Paul Gray Photo: Barry Brecheisen/WireImage The metal community continued to flood the Internet with an outpouring of remembrances, as members of Megadeth, Lamb of God, Hatebreed, Suicide Silence and more commented on the death of Slipknot bassist Paul Gray . The 38 year old Slipknot co-founder was found dead Monday in an Iowa hotel room. Details surrounding the circumstances of his death were not available at press time. On Monday night, Shinedown dedicated an acoustic version of their song “Simple Man” to Gray during a concert in Minneapolis. Hellyeah, whose drummer Vinnie Paul suffered the loss of his brother, metal giant and Pantera co-founder “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott, just a few years ago, released a statement: “We are completely shocked and very upset after hearing about the loss of Paul Gray. He was a great friend and a craftsman of one of the most compelling metal bands in history. Our thoughts are with his family, his bandmates and his countless fans and friends around the world. He will be deeply missed.” Korn guitarist James “Munky” Shaffer relayed a personal message while speaking with a 20-year-old reporter in Lincoln, Nebraska. “I want to send my love to his family and the band, going through a really, really hard time right now — myself as well,” a visibly shaken Shaffer said in the video interview. “Paul just came to see us play when we went through Des Moines, [Iowa],” he continued. “Man, I’m speechless. I just want to send my love, prayers and respect to everybody that is surrounding his wife and the baby-to-be.” “We are all in shock at the news of our friend Paul’s passing,” Lamb of God guitarist Mark Morton said in an email to MTV News. “He was an immense talent and this is such an incredible loss. Paul had a HUGE heart and lived and died for the music he made. I will miss him and the world will too.” Like Lamb of God and many other metal bands, the guys in 3 Inches of Blood got to know Slipknot while on the road as one of the Iowa band’s supporting acts. “Paul was a very kind and accommodating guy that always had time to sit and bullshit with me,” guitarist Shane Clark told MTV. “I knew his bass playing from Slipknot and Unida before we met and thought he had such a talent for tone and staying in the pocket — a sometimes-rare thing in the metal world. He was an amazing songwriter and a friend to many. My thoughts are with his family and friends at this very sad time.” “One of my earliest memories of Paul was our first tour of Ozzfest together — watching him mow down a 10-foot-high fence in a ‘borrowed’ golf cart, and that famous deviant-yet-innocent grin of his as he scampered back to his bus,” recalled Otep frontwoman Otep Shamaya to MTV News. “And then I witnessed his wonderful insanity onstage. It is painful to write about Paul in the past tense. But he was, as the inscription on Jim Morrison’s headstone reads, ‘kata ton daimona eautou’ &#8212 true to his own spirit,” she continued. “Part mystic, part madman, Paul was a savagely beautiful human being, an incredible writer, musician, and performer and an amazing friend. For those of us he touched through friendship or by his incredible music, there is some anger and outrage at this loss, the senselessness of it, but most of all, it is the heavy drapes of sadness that devours us. Another candle fades into the night; another shadow ascends into the light. Rest in power, my friend. Shake the walls of paradise for us.” “Paul was a stand-up guy and a great musician,” said another Ozzfest tourmate, Hatebreed frontman Jamey Jasta, in a statement. “He and Slipknot changed the face of rock music as we know it. Just about every metal bandmember, from 1999 onward, owes him a salute. My condolences to his band, family and fans. We’ll miss you dearly, Paul. We are eternally grateful for you,” the former MTV2 Headbangers Ball host said. Jasta’s Hatebreed bandmate, bass player Chris Beattie, released a statement of his own: “It came as a surprise today to hear that Paul Gray passed away this morning. I consider it an honor to have gotten to know him. His contribution to the music world was enormous and will live on forever. R.I.P.” Shadows Fall and Nonpoint members spoke to MTV News Monday, immediately after hearing the news, with Sepultura releasing a statement online as well. “I will never forget the first time I heard Slipknot’s debut,” Suicide Silence guitarist Chris Garza said in a statement. “It inspired me to make music and has provided a major influence ever since. My thoughts and prayers go out to Paul’s family, friends and fellow bandmates. I’m on the way to hammer back some beers and blast some tunes for you Paul. Thank you for all the memories Slipknot gave to us. You’ve touched us all with your music and you will truly be missed. RIP Paul Gray.” Last month, it was announced that Gray would replace David Ellefson in the supergroup/ cover band Hail! after Ellefson’s return to Megadeth. “I was very shocked and saddened to hear of Paul Gray’s passing,” Ellefson said via statement. “I considered him an incredible songwriter, inventive bassist, but more importantly, a kind and warm friend. As a fellow musician, I was excited that he would be playing in Hail! this coming month, as I knew it would be a fun experience for him. I’m sad that the European audiences will not get to see him play those shows.” The news of Gray’s passing shocked a community still reeling from the recent deaths of metal legend Ronnie James Dio, Type O Negative frontman Peter Steele and Avenged Sevenfold drummer Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan. “I extend my condolences to his family, to Slipknot and their management, as well as his many friends and fans who loved him around the world,” Ellefson continued. “He was another one of the ‘good ones’ in our business. … A wonderful man who will be missed by us all.” Share your memories of Paul Gray and Slipknot in the comments below. ‘VH1 Hip Hop Honors’ Producers Discuss Their ‘Dirty South’ Selections

Some have criticized the 2010 honorees for who was included or omitted. By Jayson Rodriguez Nelson George and Fab 5 Freddy Photo: MTV News The executive producers of “VH1 Hip Hop Honors” have responded to various Southern rap pioneers who have criticized the production for its 2010 selections, which include Timbaland, Jermaine Dupri, Rap-A-Lot Records founder J Prince, Luther Campbell and 2 Live Crew, Master P and Outkast producers Organized Noise. “We try to pick people from different eras, whether it was closer to the beginning or from the late ’80s into the ’90s,” Fab Five Freddy said of the process, which has drawn criticism from Suave House Records founder Tony Draper and rappers Scarface and Uncle Luke. “And people that carved out specific lanes and styles in the music.” The onetime “Yo! MTV Raps” host and writer Nelson George, who have overseen each show since its inception, admitted that every show will have detractors. “I don’t know if you do anything with hip-hop and not have people speak up,” George said in an interview posted on VH1.com . George said that for every person upset with the process, there are just as many people satisfied, noting that fans of Timbaland or Rap-A-Lot Records will see their favorites. “Depending on where your point of view is [coming from], the show works,” he said. “They say all politics are local, all hip-hop is too. People want their place represented.” Draper has voiced his displeasure in several interviews, saying the process is flawed if only one act or person that represents each facet of Southern hip-hop is selected. Luke felt he alone should be recognized for his endeavors, not the 2 Live Crew collective with whom he worked only on a limited basis. Scarface lashed out over what he perceived was an oversight since his group, the Geto Boys, were omitted, although the influential rappers were signed to Rap-A-Lot. George suggested fans celebrate the moment and those that will actually be feted, a diverse group that they sought to honor the region’s successes. Fab Five Freddy defended himself and his production partner, both native New Yorkers, overseeing a show that honors “The Dirty South.” The two were also criticized for their lack of credentials below the Mason-Dixon Line, however, Freddy dismissed that particular barb and UGK’s Bun B also defended the production. “With ‘Yo! MTV’ and with my curious nature, I got an opportunity to go to these other places where these new forms or new artists where emerging,” Freddy said. “So many people have gone with me to Liberty City in Miami to see what the 2 Live Crew was really about, to go to the 5th Ward in Texas to see the Geto Boys and, of course, most people’s favorite show, the ride on the flatbed truck through Compton with N.W.A. I got to share those experiences with a lot of other people to show it’s not just about us in [New York], it’s cats in Philly and other places that are making viable music with a unique culture. ‘Hip Hop Honors’ is still trying to do that thing. Let’s take people places and really show them and help them understand where it comes from and give props to the people that paved the way.” Are you excited to watch “VH1 Hip Hop Honors: The Dirty South”? Drake’s ‘Unforgettable,’ Featuring Young Jeezy, Hits The Web

Thank Me Later track also includes an Aaliyah sample. By Jayson Rodriguez Drake Photo: Cash Money Records Drake has always had love for Aaliyah. Over the weekend, another song from the Toronto MC’s forthcoming debut, Thank Me Later, leaked online, this one featuring a sample of the later singer’s voice. “Unforgettable,” produced by Noah “40” Shebib, also features Young Jeezy. The number begins with Aaliyah softly cooing, “Let me know,” over and over, part of her refrain from “(At Your Best) You Are Love,” which was on her 1994 debut, Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number. “This is really one of my dumbest flows ever, I haven’t slept in days/ And me and my latest girl agreed to go our separate ways,” Drake raps on the track. “So I’m single, thinking about what we had in ‘Missin’ You’/ But I ain’t saying I don’t got nothing for these bad bi—es, too.” Late last year, Drake tweeted a message to fans, hinting that he had an homage to the “Rock the Boat” singer in the works. “I miss Aaliyah,” the rapper wrote in December. “I hope you hear the words in my music and smile knowing you inspired them all.” Jeezy joins Drake on the number, and the two trade rhymes and co-anchor the chorus. “I’m just riding around the city with my hood on and my windows down/ Ask your girl, I’m the realest n—a she been around,” Jeezy raps on the hook. “When I pull up in something new and park it by the haters/ And when you get to talking about the greatest, I just hope that … ” “I just hope that you think about me, you think of me, you think of me,” Drake then sings. ” ‘Cause I’m trying to be unforgettable.” “Unforgettable” is the latest Thank Me Later production to pop up online, joining the Lil Wayne-assisted “Miss Me” and Drake’s first two singles, “Over” and “Find Your Love.” The star-studded track list for Drake’s debut was released last week and includes collaborations with Jay-Z, Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz.
