Lady Gaga, who was MTV News’ Top Newsmaker of 2011 , will be ringing in the new year in her hometown of New York. The “Marry the Night” singer , along with Justin Bieber , Nicki Minaj , LMFAO and Florence and the Machine, will watch the ball drop at the 40th annual “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve.” The event will be hosted by Ryan Seacrest, with appearances by Fergie and Jenny McCarthy. Amy Winehouse Tribute Steals Show At ‘VH1 Divas’

‘VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul’ featured performances by Kelly Clarkson, Florence Welch, Jessie J and many others. By Jocelyn Vena Jennifer Hudson,Kelly Clarkson and Mary J Blige perform onstage during VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul Photo: Larry Busacca/ Getty Images NEW YORK — Glittering clothes , big voices and sassy songs about love, loss and everything in between ruled the night during “VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul.” The concert was filled with booty-shaking, sing-along performances from Kelly Clarkson, Mary J. Blige, Florence and the Machine , Jennifer Hudson, Jill Scott, Jessie J and others, who rocked the Hammerstein Ballroom for the show, which aired Monday night (December 19) on VH1. With an assist from the night’s house band the Roots, it all kicked off with Hudson, Clarkson and Blige channeling the Supremes for “You Keep Me Hangin’ On,” before launching into a medley of their own tracks, “Spotlight,” “Real Love” and “Since U Been Gone.” The performance set the tone for the night, which not only paid homage to the women in the room, both legendary and up-and-coming, but also the cities that birthed some of the most soulful songs in music history, including Chicago, London, Detroit, Philadelphia and Memphis, Tennessee. Through the night, divas from all walks of life, including Erykah Badu, Estelle, Mavis Staples, Chaka Khan, Martha Reeves, Marsha Ambrosius and Ledisi, as well as a few divos (Boyz II Men and Travie McCoy), sang some of the biggest hits from soul music’s lush history. The set list included a sampling of tracks like “Nowhere to Run” by Martha and the Vandellas, “Walking on Broken Glass” by Annie Lennox, “I’ll Take You There” by the Staple Singers and “Ain’t Nobody” by Khan herself. When the cities themselves weren’t being honored, the divas were, with solo performances that demonstrated the ladies’ killer vocal prowess. Florence Welch, Clarkson, Sharon Jones, Jessie J, Scott, Hudson and Blige each took the stage to give some shine to their own tracks and pop styles, proving that soul music is a genre that is still alive and well. The Amy Winehouse tribute was the culmination of the night. Although “VH1 Divas” was all about the living performers who belted out songs at the concert, the presence of one diva gone too soon was certainly felt. Instead of focusing on the loss suffered when the British songstress died over the summer, the show focused on a celebration of her music. “What’s up New York?” the tribute’s MC, Nas, asked the room. “When the legendary Amy Winehouse sang about me in her song ‘Me and Mr. Jones,’ I was so honored. Amy Winehouse was my true soul sister.” The two worked together on her Lioness: Hidden Treasures track, “Like Smoke.” “I’m here to honor a woman who had enough soul to last a lifetime,” he added. The presence of his “home girl” was felt in the room thanks to her game-changing music as reimagined by Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings (the latter of whom worked with her on her Back to Black album), Florence Welch and Wanda Jackson. The medley included her soul-killing breakup track “Back to Black” and her sassy anthem “You Know I’m No Good.” Related Artists Amy Winehouse Kelly Clarkson Jennifer Hudson Florence + the Machine Mary J. Katy Perry’s ‘SNL’ Florence Welch Imitation Was ‘Amazing’

‘I’m kind of really honored,’ Florence and the Machine singer says of Perry’s parody. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias Florence Welch of Florence and The Machine Photo: MTV News Last month, Florence and the Machine singer Florence Welch pulled double duty on “Saturday Night Live,” not only performing but also making a rather unexpected cameo in a sketch called “New Jack Thanksgiving,” during which she vamped her way through a sultry, turkey-themed R&B jam. Of course, if you caught this past weekend’s “SNL,” you may have thought she showed up again, this time in a skit about a canine-centric courtroom drama called “Doggie Duty.” Only it wasn’t Welch: It was host Katy Perry , who nailed a note-perfect impression of Flo on a song called “The Dog Trial Is Over.” Yes, it was about as random as you’d think, and yes, Welch found it to be quite amazing — even if she hadn’t actually seen it yet. “I haven’t seen it yet! I’ve seen pictures!” she told MTV News backstage at KROQ’s Almost Acoustic Christmas on Sunday. “I think she looks amazing! I was like, ‘Yeah, that’s it! You’ve got the hair, the dress, everything. ‘ … I’ve heard she did a really amazing job, and I’m kind of really honored.” Not only did Welch think Perry got her look just right, but, having seen everything that goes into getting a sketch on the air, she knows just how long it took to make it happen. Which is why she’s doubly honored … both by the impression and by the fact that not many folks can cameo on “SNL” without actually being there. “We performed on ‘SNL’ and everyone’s so nice,” she said. “I sat in the writers’ room with everybody when we were organizing the skit that I did, and just kind of seeing how everyone gets crowded into this tiny room and sits on the floor, and being there with all the writers and the actors, it was kind of really amazing. So I feel very honored to be part of a skit without actually being there!” Related Artists Florence + the Machine Katy Perry

Florence And The Machine Get ‘Satanic’ In ‘Shake It Out’ Video

Florence Welch says they were going for ‘slightly ritualistic and sort of satanic undertones’ in the clip. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Rya Backer Florence Welch Photo: Andreaa Radulescu/MTV Florence Welch has seen better days. After a rather long night in New York City — where she was in town to perform at the Vice-sponsored Creator’s Project, as well as promote her upcoming album, Ceremonials — she’s a bit worse for wear. And honestly, she thinks the entire world might spin off its axis any minute now. “I’m so bad at dealing with hangovers. I feel like it’s the end of the world, ‘This is basically it for me, nothing is going to be good ever again,’ ” she sighed. “And the poor people around me are like, ‘Florence, it’s fine.’ And I’m, ‘It’s not fine, nothing will ever be fine!’ ” Then again, her current state is somewhat appropriate, given that she’s talking about the Ceremonials single “Shake It Out,” a rousing, revelatory song that also just so happens to have been written under similarly skull-splitting circumstances. “I think I came to the studio with a bit of a hangover, and it was one of those strange days where you’re not really sure where a song comes from,” she explained. “[Producer] Paul [Epwoth] just had these chords on the organ, and they sounded optimistic and sad at the same time. And I was thinking of regrets, like, you know when you feel like you’re stuck in yourself, you keep repeating certain patterns of behavior, and you kind of want to cut out that part of you and restart yourself. “So this song was kind of like, ‘Shake yourself out of it, things will be OK,’ ” she continued. “[Because] sometimes I have to write songs for myself, reminding me to let it go. But then, the end refrain of ‘What the hell’ is really important as well, because you’ll dance with the devil again at some point, and maybe it will be fun. I’ve heard he does a really good foxtrot.” And in keeping with that last point, Florence (and her Machine) made it a priority to get devilish with the “Shake It Out” video, which was shot in the grandiose Eltham Palace and was, by all accounts, a pretty excellent party — one that, like most of Ceremonials, seemed to span space and time. “We were kind of going for a sort of ‘Gatsby at West Egg’-style house party but with maybe slightly ritualistic and sort of satanic undertones and s

Adele To Return With Live Album, DVD In November

Release of Live at the Royal Albert Hall comes on the heels of singer cancelling a slew of shows due to vocal issues. By James Montgomery Adele Photo: Stefan M. Prager/Redferns Vocal problems may have forced Adele to scrap her U.S. tour , but next month, she’ll return to the States … with a live CD and DVD. Due out November 29, Live at the Royal Albert Hall was recorded during Adele’s rousing September show at the iconic London venue, and features her full 90-minute performance, which includes her biggest hits from the 19 and 21 albums, plus covers of Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me” and the Steeldrivers’ “If It Hadn’t Been for Love.” The film, directed by Paul Dugdale (who has previously worked with the Prodigy, Florence and the Machine and, of course, Adele herself), also contains exclusive behind-the-scenes content shot throughout the day. The CD/DVD package is currently available for pre-order through Adele’s website , and fans might want to pick it up, as it’s probably the last time they’ll get to see the British belter for a while. She’s been battling vocal issues for months, first postponing her North American tour in June due to laryngitis, then rescheduling dates before announcing in early October that a vocal hemorrhage would force her off the road entirely. Of course, none of that has slowed the success of her massive 21, which will once again top the Billboard albums chart next week and has sold more than 4 million copies in the U.S. alone since February. She’s also one of the most-nominated artists at next month’s American Music Awards (no word on whether she’ll attend, though), and her latest single, “Someone Like You,” currently sits atop the Billboard Hot 100. Florence And The Machine Reveal Next Single: Exclusive

‘No Light, No Light’ is next off upcoming Ceremonials, Florence Welch tells MTV News. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Rya Backer Florence Welch Photo: MTV News On November 1 in the U.S. (October 31 in the U.K., which is a decidedly more fitting date, we must add) Florence and the Machine will return with Ceremonials, the bewitching, ethereal follow-up to their breakout Lungs album . And like that debut disc, the new one finds frontwoman/mastermind Florence Welch drawing from a grab bag of influences, both musical and lyrical, only pushed to the nth degree. To wit, the first two songs released from the album — “What the Water Gave Me” and “Shake It Off” — take their inspiration from the paintings of Frida Kahlo, the death of writer Virginia Woolf and a rather blistering hangover, to name just a few. In fact, this time around, it’s gotten so all-over-the-place that even Welch is having a difficult time keeping track, as she told MTV News. “Literally, a song can be about seven different things,” she sighed. “I do think of songs almost as collages of different images, and so the references will just come from all over the place, and I don’t really know how they’ll all fit together until the song is finished.” The same holds true for the album’s title, which was inspired by a 1970s art installation Welch had seen, and the eclectic, electric rave-ups of her live performances. But robes, pasta and balloons, too. “It was an art installation done in the ’70s, this video piece all done on Super 8, this big procession of kind of coquette-style hippies and all these different colored robes and masks, and it was all to do with color, really saturated, brightly colored pastas and balloons,” Welch explained. “I saw it a couple years ago, and it was called ‘Ceremonials’ and then, like, Roman numerals after it. And the word sort of stuck with me, and I think the whole idea of performance, and kind of putting on this outfit and going out almost to find some sort of exorcism or absolution, to kind of get outside yourself, there’s a sense of ceremony to it.” That same pastiche of influences holds true for the next single off the album, which, in a bit of an exclusive, Welch revealed during our interview (even though she probably wasn’t supposed to). “I do [know what it’s going to be] but I don’t think [I’m supposed to say],” she said. “I think it’s going to be ‘No Light, No Light.’ … It was the first song we wrote for this next record, actually. And the intro was written on my tour bus at four in the morning going to Amsterdam. We had gone out for [Machine member] Rob [Ackroyd]’s birthday to an all-night restaurant in Brussels called Midnights. We went to this funny restaurant and then got on the tour bus and everyone was a bit drunk and it was like, ‘Yeah, let’s write a song.’ “And we recorded the sound of the bus moving, a real drone-y bass sound, and that’s the intro, and then the tour bus arrived in Amsterdam [and we were saying], ‘Let’s go toast this song! We will find a bar that will serve us drinks at 7 in the morning! Come!’ ” she laughed. “So we trotted off into Amsterdam and managed to find a sports bar that would only serve us Midori. It was bright-green drinks and me and [Machine member] Isa [Summers] kind of looking like crazy old ladies.” Related Artists Florence + the Machine
