Tom Morello Set To Perform At Occupy Wall Street

Rage Against the Machine guitarist has already dropped in on the Los Angeles Occupy protest. By Gil Kaufman Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello Photo: Ethan Miller/ Getty Images Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello has protest in his blood. As part of the legendary L.A. politico-stompers and in the guise of his folk-style rebel alter ego, the Nightwatchman, he’s stood up for dozens of righteous causes of the years. So it should come as no surprise that the Nightwatchman will be paying a visit to the Occupy Wall Street gang in New York’s Liberty Plaza/ Zuccotti Park on Thursday (October 13). Morello, who has long advocated for union rights and raged against corporate greed and financial malfeasance, announced that he will play an acoustic set at noon in the park in an effort to lend his support to the hordes who’ve been occupying the Manhattan real estate for more than three weeks in their bid to speak out against economic inequality in the nation. “The Nightwatchman will Occupy Wall Street tomorrow at noon, adding one more voice to the growing chorus of millions demanding economic justice at home and around the globe,” Morello told Rolling Stone magazine on Wednesday. “And I’ll be playing some songs. Likely in the rain.”
Can’t get to New York City? Take our guided tour of the Occupy Wall Street headquarters. Morello, who previously unplugged to perform a set at the Occupy L.A. protest, will join a recent string of musicians who’ve made their way down to the park to express their solidarity with the Occupy forces. Rapper Talib Kweli performed an impromptu set last week that included his new song, “Distractions,” as did reclusive Neutral Milk Hotel singer Jeff Magnum. And though he didn’t perform, Kanye West strolled down to check out the action on Monday along with Def Jam Records founder Russell Simmons. Bun B spoke to MTV News this week about his visit to Occupy Houston . Share your thoughts on the Occupy Wall Street movement in our comments section. Diddy Wants Machine Gun Kelly To Stay ‘True To Himself’

‘This kid, I think he’s a star,’ Diddy tells Sway on MTV News’ ‘RapFix Live.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Diddy and Machine Gun Kelly Photo: MTV News Diddy ‘s ear for talent is unquestionable. After playing an instrumental role in the careers of Jodeci and Mary J. Blige , the Bad Boy founder went on to discover the Notorious B.I.G. , Mase, 112 and Faith Evans. His newest signee may not fit the Bad Boy mold, but Diddy is excited nonetheless — so excited that he Skyped into “RapFix Live” while on vacation in Spain to chat it up with Sway about his newest artist, Machine Gun Kelly . “Yes, I signed MGK,” Diddy confirmed. “This kid, I think he’s a star. He’s one of the best live performers I’ve ever seen to come out in a minute.” Influenced by DMX , Cleveland, Ohio’s Machine Gun Kelly began battle-rapping around 2004 while he was still in high school. His passion grew from the corner ciphers to the studio, where he would lay tracks for his 2006 mixtape, Stamp of Approval. Back then, the MC (who got the Machine Gun part of his moniker because of his rapid-fire raps) was just getting his feet wet. In 2010, MGK would drop two tapes, 100 Words and Runnin’ and his breakthrough Lace Up. From there, the energetic spitter would develop his following thanks to his spirited live performance. The hip-hop mogul marveled at the existing fanbase Kelly had before even signing the deal. “He has just such a movement, just hundreds and thousands of loyal fans that came from the place he came from in different parts of the country,” Diddy gushed. “He wasn’t always the coolest kid in school, and just the process of growing up and the problems that they all encounter, they relate to him in such a way.” On the surface, MGK may not fit what many would perceive as the Bad Boy mold. He is a white, skinny, tatted-up kid from Cleveland who is influenced by punk music just as much as he is influenced by rap. For Combs, it’s a non-issue. “One of the things as an executive and someone that runs a record company is that I change so much as far as my respect for artists whether they succeed or fail. I think it’s important to empower the artist,” he said. “He will not be changing for Bad Boy; he will not have a typical Bad Boy swag. He’s not going to be popping champagne or driving around in Bentleys. He’s gonna be him and true to himself. He has a lot of creative control in his project.” Kelly, who recently graduated from sleeping on a futon to a mattress in his manager’s mother’s house, agrees. He assured his fans that he won’t be changing his lifestyle very much. “We’re kind of all about that ‘I don’t like to look better than my fans,’ so maybe one day I’ll change, but I pray to God I just stay the same,” he said. “We had a bidding war before he came in, but Puff is Puff,” MGK said. “Honestly, I really want to treasure this almost-famous stage as much as we can, while we still can. It’s crazy, because Ohio is one thing; we have this great hometown love. We’ll do 4,000 in one show, but then we just did Texas and it was probably 60 to 100 people, still doin’ holes in the wall, and it’s so cool.” He won’t be doing those venues much longer. MGK confirmed that he signed a two-album deal with Bad Boy and will be dropping his debut album, also called Lace Up, in the first quarter of 2012. “No push-backs with us, baby,” he bragged. “Not happening. The fans are not allowing that to go down.” Have you checked out Machine Gun Kelly’s music? Share your thoughts in the comments! Linkin Park? U2? Ke$ha? Behind MTV’s Musical March Madness Selection

With the tipoff of our tournament set for Monday, Bigger Than the Sound breaks down your favorite band’s chances of busting the bracket. By James Montgomery Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda and Chester Bennington Photo: Frank Hoensch/ Getty Images Last year, when we launched the inaugural Musical March Madness tournament, we did it largely on a whim. As I wrote when I revealed my original (handwritten) bracket , the basic idea was to combine my love of college basketball, gambling and rock music (and superfluous lists) into one magical event, and it really didn’t matter that I hadn’t figured out how bands would advance in the tournament or even what they’d get for winning. All I knew was that it seemed like a fun idea (especially since I didn’t have anything else to write my column about that week) and that somewhere, there had to be someone who cared about these seemingly disparate things nearly as much as I did. As it turned out, there were a lot of people who cared, and when it was all said and done — thanks to the efforts of a whole lot of folks, including Newsroom blog editor Kyle Anderson, who basically decided “You know what? People should vote on this!” — not only was Musical March Madness a certified success, but we somehow even managed to get an actual trophy to present to the winners, Coheed and Cambria , too. So, really, everybody won. Of course, given the success of the original MMM, attention quickly shifted to the 2011 tournament. Last year, I basically just threw together a list of 64 bands (65, actually; who could forget the epic Against Me!/ Creed play-in battle?). For the 2011 tournament, however, I did research, monitored album sales and basically became a Selection Committee of one. And, yes, it took way longer than I ever could have imagined. So, with the 2011 Musical March Madness set to tip off Monday — when we reveal our full bracket of 64 bands and launch voting in first-round matchups — I decided to pull back the curtain on that selection process. Some teams have all but locked up their spots in the 2011 tournament, while others still have some work to do. In the spirit of all things bracketological, here’s my up-to-the-minute look at where your favorite bands stand for this year’s MMM: The #1 Seeds The biggest bands in the land. Last year, I gave out #1’s to Nickelback, Coldplay, Blink-182 and the Kings of Leon. Somewhat surprisingly, three-quarters of them ended up losing in the opening round of the tournament (only Blink survived, making it to the round of 32 before losing to 30 Seconds to Mars). Obviously, I overestimated the popularity of some of those acts, which means that, in 2011, to be a #1 seed, you have to have proven yourself as not only a rock-solid commodity, but an actual threat to win the championship too. Oh, and it wouldn’t hurt to have an album either in stores or coming soon. So here are my latest contenders for top seeds:
