‘Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows’ Cheat Sheet

We have everything you need to know about the Guy Ritchie sequel. By Kara Warner Robert Downey Jr. in “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” After the spectacular success of “Sherlock Holmes” — $515 million in worldwide ticket sales and a Best Actor Golden Globe win for Robert Downey Jr., both of which were unpredictable accomplishments given the fact that the film arrived in theaters at the same time as James Cameron’s “Avatar” — it was no surprise when Warner Bros. announced plans for a sequel. To celebrate the arrival of “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” in theaters Friday (December 16), here’s our comprehensive cheat sheet of everything you need to know about the action-packed, Guy Ritchie-directed sequel. A New World of Possibilities Amazingly enough, talk of a “Sherlock” sequel began three months prior to the original’s release, when Brad Pitt was rumored to be joining the cast as Moriarty and there were rumblings that it would be shot in 3-D . Neither of those things panned out, but we did eventually learn that the sequel would be filmed in Paris and London and that instead of “Sherlock Holmes 2,” the film’s title would be “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.” Fresh Meat Early on, we learned that Rachel McAdams’ return as Irene Adler was trimmed to a “very small part,” which made way for the addition of a new female lead, Noomi Rapace, who originated the role of Lisbeth Salander in Sweden’s “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.” Ritchie summed up her character thusly: “She’s a gypsy princess with balls,” he told us when we visited the set. “That’s what Noomi brings to the table.” The other new addition was “Mad Men” actor Jared Harris , who won the coveted role of the villainous Professor Moriarty. Harris couldn’t give us many details about the role when we caught up with him in early ’11, but he did gush about the “great fun” he had on set. Setting the Shadowy Tone As we started to inch closer to the film’s release, we started to see that the sequel was going to be a bit darker via the first official posters , photos and the first full-length trailer . It’s not all dark and stormy, of course, since a lot of the fun of the first film was in the whimsical moments between Downey and Law, and Holmes’ various disguises, as revealed in this funny clip featuring more of RDG in drag. When MTV News caught up with the main players recently, Downey assured us the film is a “superior product” and that everyone had gone to great lengths to make it bigger and better. Perhaps Ritchie summed it up best: “All in all, we tried to basically put this film on ‘roids.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

TV (Non)Nudity Report: The Playboy Club [PICS]

We weren’t under any illusions about The Playboy Club having actual nudity. Although the female leads all signed contracts containing “nudity clauses” (no problem for star and Nudity Hall-of-Famer Amber Heard ), the show airs during prime time on NBC, and is already a prime target for the killjoys at the Parents Television Council . We might have to wait until the DVD for those nudity clauses to be (s)exercised, but last night the show’s premiere served up an extra-thick slice of cheesecake. Mmmmmmm, cheesecake. If you’ve got a thing for granny panties, hold on to your hats, because Amber Heard , along with her co-stars Jenna Dewan-Tatum and Leah Renee Cudmore , got sexy in scandalous (for the time, maybe) bra and panties combos. Looks like someone’s been raiding Mad Men ‘s wardrobe closet! More pics from The Playboy Club after the jump!

Brad Pitt Is ‘Inspiring,’ ‘World War Z’ Director Says

‘I always wanted to work with [Pitt],’ Marc Forster tells MTV News. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Brad Pitt Photo: Steve Granitz/ Getty Images Like a zombie ambling toward its target, Brad Pitt took his time developing “World War Z.” Plan B, his production company, first acquired the rights to Max Brooks’ novel about the rise of the flesh-eating undead in 2007, then hiring “Quantum of Solace” director Marc Forster to helm the project before the script underwent a series of rewrites. At that point, it was not at all clear that Pitt would take on anything more than a behind-the-scenes role. Eventually, though, Forster found in Pitt not only a hands-on producer but the star of his film. “I was really intrigued by the book,” Forster told MTV News at the Toronto International Film Festival while promoting his drama, “Machine Gun Preacher.” “I always wanted to work with [Pitt]. I think he is an incredible actor and he is an inspiring collaborator. If you look at his filmography, he has incredibly good taste. The choices he makes — he’s very smart about it.” The book itself doesn’t present a straightforward narrative, but an oral history that skips from character to character and crumbling nation to crumbling nation as the zombie apocalypse takes hold. From these far-flung plot strands, the filmmakers had to construct a coherent, streamlined narrative. What’s more, they had to find a way to separate “World War Z” from the zombie-centric pack, both past and present, in movies, TV, video games and beyond. “You want to try to avoid the clich

January Jones Welcomes Baby Boy

Xander Dane Jones born to ‘Mad Men’ actress Tuesday. By Kara Warner January Jones Photo: Stephen Lovekin/ Getty Images January Jones gave birth to a healthy baby boy named Xander Dane Jones on Tuesday. “Mom and baby are doing great,” Jones’ rep told Us Weekly. The “X-Men: First Class” and “Mad Men” actress admitted recently that choosing a baby name was harder than she thought it would be, especially given the fact that she chose not to know the sex of the baby beforehand. “I’m having a hard time,” she revealed to KRQ radio-show hosts Johnjay and Rich. “I’m looking for boy and girl names, obviously, because it’s going to be a surprise for me,” Jones said. “I love Cary Grant, I like Marilyn Monroe. That seems kind of like a celebrity thing to do, those weird names. I’m not really into that. I don’t want to be too clich

‘Glee’ Graduates Already Have After-School Plans

Lea Michele, Cory Monteith and Chris Colfer all are working on films. By Terri Schwartz Lea Michele Photo: Jason Merritt/Getty Images Life is changing for the cast of “Glee,” both onscreen and off. Thursday’s Emmy nominations were kind to the cast, but creator Ryan Murphy’s announcement Wednesday that leads Lea Michele, Cory Monteith and Chris Colfer will exit the show after the third season came as a bit of a shock to the actors involved. Apparently, neither Colfer nor Monteith was aware that their time with Fox’s hit musical show would be ending so soon, though they did know their characters would be written off at some point to coincide with their impending high school graduations. “I didn’t necessarily know that it was going to be our last season next year,” Colfer told “Access Hollywood” . “I knew something like that was coming up eventually. I mean, we can’t be there forever. I don’t necessarily want to leave so soon, but it’s fine. It’s what it is, and all things come to an end.” Fortunately, things are on an upswing for Colfer. He earned his second Emmy nomination for the show Thursday, and after winning the Golden Globe earlier this year for his performance, there’s a good chance he’ll be taking Emmy gold home come September 18. Then, Friday morning (July 15), there was the announcement that “Mad Men” star Christina Hendricks will be joining Colfer in his upcoming film project “Struck by Lightning,” which he both wrote and stars in. Sarah Hyland of “Modern Family” and “My Best Friend’s Wedding” actor Dermot Mulroney jumped onboard as well. Colfer also can look forward to the release of “Glee: The 3D Concert Movie,” coming August 12. The trailer for the film debuted online Thursday. The three exiting “Glee” stars all seem to be remaining optimistic about their upcoming departure. “We always knew we’d graduate in real time. It’s all part of the plan and it’s all good! It’s going to make Season 3 amazing!!!” Michele tweeted after the announcement hit the web. Both she and Monteith also have upcoming film projects. Michele has a role in Garry Marshall’s ensemble rom-com “New Year’s Eve,” filming now, and Monteith has the upcoming “Sisters & Brothers” in addition to his recently released “Monte Carlo.” Then there’s also the rumor, courtesy of RumorFix.com , that Michele and Colfer will be receiving their own spin-off show. Were you surprised by the “Glee” announcement? Sound off below!
