Now you’ve done it, celebrities. You’re pretending that Ricky Gervais’s zingers were anything but expected at Sunday’s Golden Globes, and now he’s never coming back. You malnourished spazzes! Would you prefer he can-can in front of a Best Picture montage like Billy Crystal? Wear Pleasantville costumes and flash Oda Mae side-eyes like Whoopi Goldberg? Jesus. Now we’re screwed for the awards show we actually care about: The Oscars.

Last Summer’s Mortal Kombat Viral Spec to Become 2011 Web Series

Sadly, the world will have to wait a while longer to see the big-screen return of Mortal Kombat , the totally ’90s martial arts fantasy video game — film franchise that had us all screaming “Finish him!” and dancing to that horrifically infectious, Immortals-penned techno theme (“Mooooortal Kombat!”) in our misspent youths. But something good did come of that impressive proof of concept short that made the rounds last summer: Warner Bros. ordered a 10-episode Web series based on Kevin Tancharoen’s slick short Mortal Kombat: Rebirth .

Have Linkin Park Changed Too Much On ‘The Catalyst’? Fans Sound Off

Band’s supporters are split over whether new single and video are too much of a departure or a natural evolution. By James Montgomery Linkin Park on the set of “The Catalyst” music video Photo: Warner Bros. With its ominous tone and murky visuals, Linkin Park’s new video for “The Catalyst” is a far cry from the band’s previous, hyperkinetic clips. And, as bassist Dave “Phoenix” Farrell told MTV News earlier this month, that was sort of the point. “The Catalyst” was meant to shake things up and give fans fair warning that LP’s upcoming A Thousand Suns album is going to be a rather dramatic departure from anything they’ve done in the past. Of course, to most, that’s not exactly breaking news. After all, Linkin Park have basically spent the better part of a year touting the “grandiose insanity” of Suns, the album on which they “challenged” themselves to move beyond their n

M.I.A.’s New Album Is ‘A Turd,’ Diplo Tweets

But websites who take that comment seriously are ‘trippin’,’ producer says. By James Montgomery M.I.A. Photo: Chris Weeks/ WireImage When MTV News spoke to Diplo way back in March, he told us that M.I.A. ‘s new album was going to be “heavy” and “weird.” Turns out, he also thinks it’s also “a turd.” That’s according to Dip himself, who was asked by a fan via Twitter on Wednesday about why, at the end of the track “Tell Me Why” “does it sound like a toilet just flushed …?” “Cuz the rest of [the] album is a turd,” he tweeted back. Of course, his response quickly made the rounds on the Internet, ending up on seemingly disparate sites like Oh No They Didn’t and Pitchfork . Diplo then spent the rest of the day tweeting that the sites in question were “trippin’.” “I think when there are no Wavves vs. Crystal Castles 12″s or open [letters] from Conor Oberst and Gucci Mane, @pitchforkmedia has 2 reach a lil 4 news.” But whether or not he was just kidding around when he called M.I.A.’s ///Y/&#92 a “turd,” Diplo has had a rather interesting relationship with the album. Last month, he tweeted that his own “3 trax are slammin'” but that the rest of the record — which was produced mainly by Rusko, Blaqstarr and Switch — “sounds like Skinny Puppy and gives me nightmares.” He also added a pair of sad-face emoticons to further illustrate his point. And back in May, in the now-infamous New York Times Magazine feature on M.I.A. , he told reporter Lynn Hirschberg that “for me, making this record wasn’t easy. In the past, we were a team. But Maya wanted to show us how much she didn’t need us. In the end, Maya is postmodern; she can’t really make music or art that well, but she’s better than anyone at putting crazy ideas into motion. She knows how to manipulate, how to withhold, how to get what she wants.” An e-mail to a rep for Diplo was not responded to by press time. What do you think of M.I.A.’s album? MTV Movie Awards Set Designer Gives A Sneak Peek

‘We’ve got gold hubcaps spinning, crazy popcorn, butter — it’s a mess,’ Anton Goss says. By Kara Warner 2010 MTV Movie Awards set Photo: MTV News While the MTV Movie Awards show itself is always packed with surprises from attendees, presenters and winners, one of the unsung, slightly under-the-radar heroes is the show’s flashy, highly technologically enhanced stage design. Will there be showers of golden popcorn? Hidden trapdoors or elevators? Performers flying from the ceiling? MTV’s Jim Cantiello recently caught up with production designer Anton Goss to get a sneak peek at his fancy set designing computer, where he showed off a few of the “looks” that will gild the Gibson Ampitheather in classic MTV gold come Sunday. “We have three main looks,” Goss offered. “We have a ‘TV look,’ we have a ‘film-reel look’ [and] I call this one my ‘pimp my ride look,’ ” he described while loading the different graphics and stage layouts on his laptop. “We’ve got gold hubcaps spinning, crazy popcorn, butter — it’s a mess.” “The ‘secret look’ is the one we’re most proud of,” Goss said with a conspiratory grin, and then offered only a vague description: “We had a lot of fun with that. … It’s shocking.” This is Goss’ second turn as production designer for the MTV Movie Awards stages. He’s a seasoned pro where TV set decor is concerned, having designed episodes of “The Bachelor,” “Last Comic Standing,” the 2010 People’s Choice Awards and the Spike Video Game Awards; he’s also made the rounds in the daytime talk-show circuit, having designed for “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” the latter for which he won a Daytime Emmy in 2009. Don’t miss the live red-carpet coverage, exclusive movie clips and fist-pumping action on MTV News’ “Jersey Shore Blow-Out at the MTV Movie Awards,” airing live from Los Angeles this Sunday, June 6, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Then stay tuned for the 2010 MTV Movie Awards at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Related Videos Get Ready For The 2010 MTV Movie Awards!
