Madonna And Lionel Richie To Reunite On Billboard Charts?

The singers are expected to return to the top five next week, the first time they’ve been chart mates in 26 years. By Gil Kaufman Madonna on cover of True Blue and Lionel Richie on cover of Dancing on the Ceiling Photo: Sire/ Motown America was still four years away from the first of three wars in the Middle East, Lady Gaga was a newborn, and the Internet was just a twinkle in the eye of some academic nerds’ coke-bottle glasses. That’s how long it’s been since Madonna and Lionel Richie were both in the top five of the Billboard 200 chart at the same time. The year was 1986, and Richie was riding high with his smash #1 album, Dancing on the Ceiling, while Madge was at #5 with her former #1, True Blue. Next week the pair will be chart mates again, as Madonna’s dance-tastic MDNA is predicted to sell between 300,000 and 350,000 copies to take the top spot, while Richie’s album of country re-workings of his biggest hits, Tuskegee, should land at #2 on sales of 125,000 to 150,000. Back in the day, both were celebrating the release of their third album. Madonna dedicated her “girliest” work to date to her then-husband, actor Sean Penn, even as she began delving into more topical songs (“Papa Don’t Preach”) and Latin rhythms (“La Isla Bonita”). For an artist who’d already ascended to pop stardom with her first two discs, True Blue was a chance for Madonna to expand her fanbase, and though it debuted at #28, it eventually reached #1, where it stayed for five weeks. Among the singles released from the album are “Live to Tell,” the title track and “Open Your Heart.” It went on to sell more than 25 million copies worldwide. For Richie, it was also a time of transition. The former Commodores singer — who was born in Tuskegee, Alabama — had scored some hits on his first two solo albums, including “My Love,” the Caribbean-spiced “All Night Long,” “Hello” and “Running With the Night.” While Madonna continues to be one of the biggest live draws in the world and a global superstar, Dancing on the Ceiling marked the beginning of the end of Richie’s mass popularity. But, the famously well-coiffed singer went out with a huge bang. Not only was the title cut a #1 single and hugely popular video, but the album also spawned the moving ballad “Say You, Say Me,” as well as “Love Will Conquer All” and “Ballerina Girl.” While Madonna continued to crank out hit albums such as Like a Prayer, Erotica and Bedtime Stories, it would be 10 years before Richie was back on the charts. His Louder Than Words came out in April 1996, debuting at #33 and not spawning any memorable hits. Against the usual pop music odds, Madonna is still launching singles onto the charts, recently played the most coveted gig in music — the Super Bowl halftime show — and has collaborated with modern stars like Nicki Minaj. Richie has been lower-profile, but served a well-received stint as a guest mentor on the second-biggest reality music competition on TV, “The Voice,” and he roped in such big-name country stars as Kenny Chesney, Shania Twain, Jason Aldean, Darius Rucker, Rascal Flatts, Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles, Blake Shelton, Willie Nelson and old pal Kenny Rogers. Madonna/deadmau5 Feud: MDNA Producer Weighs In

‘She has this dry sense of humor, which sometimes makes her say or do things that are a little bit shocking,’ Martin Solveig tells MTV News of Madge. By Jocelyn Vena Madonna and deadmau5 Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Earlier this week, Madonna and EDM star deadmau5 were in a war of words after a comment the Queen of Pop made at Miami’s Ultra Music Festival . For those who haven’t been following along at home, when Madonna took the stage to introduce Avicii, she asked the room, “How many people in this crowd have seen Molly?” Molly is another term for the illegal drug MDMA (ecstasy). That reference angered ‘mau5, who took to his Facebook to call out Madonna for seemingly linking dance music and drug use, a persistent stereotype. Eventually, the two settled the argument when Madonna took to Twitter , explaining that she was actually referring to the song “Have You Seen Molly” by Cedric Gervais, not the drug. deadmau5 seemed fine with her clarification, and all was cool between the once-beefing twosome. When MTV News caught up with one of Madge’s MDNA producers, fellow EDM DJ Martin Solveig, he weighed in on the short-lived, yet headline-making, tiff. “She’s a lot more ironical than a lot of people think, and … she has this dry sense of humor, which sometimes makes her say or do things that are a little bit shocking, which is also the reason why everyone loves her,” he said of Madge. Solveig also showed support to ‘mau5 (real name Joel Zimmerman). “Joel probably read the whole thing a bit more first-degree and was a little bit angry, and there’s nothing wrong with that,” he continued. “And about him saying the things that he wants to say, I mean, I’m totally with him on that. No one here is promoting drug use, and maybe it was important to say this. I know Madonna enough to know that she is, like, completely at the opposite of supporting drug use, but it’s a little bit of a chitchat.” What did you make of the Madonna/’mau5 feud? Madonna Set To Score Eighth #1 Album

MDNA will likely sell up to 350,000 copies in its first week, according to Billboard. By Jocelyn Vena Madonna’s MDNA Photo: Interscope Madonna probably doesn’t need to stop by any of Piers Morgan’s talk shows to sell albums. The Material Girl is poised to have the #1 album on the Billboard albums chart next week. MDNA is estimated to sell between 300,000 and 350,000 copies by the end of the tracking week (Sunday), according to Billboard . The album, which dropped on March 26, marks Madonna’s fifth consecutive studio album to land in the top spot. She’s had a total of eight #1 albums in her career. 2008’s Hard Candy, her last studio album, debuted with 280,000 units sold, meaning that Madonna will once again even top herself with MDNA if the numbers shake out as expected. For the album, Madonna reunited with her Ray of Light producer William Orbit, as well as other electronic-music producers like Martin Solveig and Benny Benassi, creating an album that ranges from hard-hitting dance tracks to lighthearted pop affairs. Madge’s record sales were reinforced thanks to a joint album/ concert-ticket sale venture through which fans were offered the chance to purchase the release along with tickets to her highly anticipated world tour. But Madonna isn’t the only 1980s superstar expected to sit high atop the Billboard 200 next week. Lionel Richie’s Tuskegee should place at #2 with 125,000 to 150,000 albums sold. The album features re-workings of some of Richie’s biggest tunes with the assistance of country stars like Shania Twain and Blake Shelton. Billboard points out the last time Madge and Richie were in the top five together was in October 1986 when Richie was at #1 with Dancing on the Ceiling while the Queen of Pop’s onetime #1 True Blue was settled at #5. Justin Bieber’s own big release, his new single “Boyfriend,” which also dropped Monday, is also expected to have a big week on the charts. According to early estimates, the lead Believe single could sell more than 400,000 downloads in its first week, giving it a big push on next week’s Billboard Hot 100 chart. This would give the singer his best sales week for a song to date. Related Artists Madonna

Jimmy Kimmel to Host 2012 Emmy Awards

Jimmy Kimmel is going from late night to primetime. For one night only, at least. The comedian will host the 2012 Emmy Awards, ABC announced today, joking in a statement he hopes “to do for the Emmys this year what Eddie Murphy did for the Oscars,” referring to Murphy’s extremely short tenure as host of this year’s Academy Awards. This will be Kimmel’s first time hosting the evening, although he has previously emceed the American Music Awards and the ESPY Awards. In recent years, the Emmy hosts have included Jane Lynch, Jimmy Fallon, Neil Patrick Harris and, in a horribly-failed experiment, a quintet of reality TV stars.

Madonna Trashed By Deadmau5 For Glamorization of Ecstasy

Madonna has come under attack from Deadmau5, one of the world’s most famous DJs, for glamorizing ecstasy use, allegedly, during a recent concert. Her Madgesty took the stage at the Ultra Music Festival in Miami this weekend, asking crowd, “How many people in this crowd have seen molly?” “Molly” is a slang term for MDMA, one of the key ingredients in ecstasy, a drug hugely popular within the electronic dance music community. Incidentally (or not) Madonna’s new album, which drops today, is called MDNA . Watch her address the crowd at the 45-second mark below: Madonna at Ultra Music Festival The crowd apparently loved the veiled inquiry from Madonna, but Deadmau5 is not a fan at all, going on Facebook and tearing her a new one. “Very classy there madonna. ‘HUR DUR HAS ANYONE SEEN MOLLY???’ such a great message for the young music lovers at ultra,” he wrote. The Mau5 added, “Quite the f’n philanthropist. but hey, at least yer HIP AND TRENDY! f*cking cant smack my head hard enough right now.” Bottom line: Mind-altering drugs are not cool, ravers. So says a man-mau5 whose fan base is probably on them 97 percent of the time.

‘American Idol’ Top 10 In A Billy Joel State Of Mind

Jessica Sanchez and Elise Testone both earn standing ovations for their renditions of Piano Man classics. By Adam Graham Erika Van Pelt on “American Idol” Photo: Fox Wednesday (March 21) was Billy Joel night on “American Idol,” and as the top 10 contestants took on the Piano Man’s catalog, some big moves were made in the “Idol” ranks. Jessica Sanchez took a step toward reclaiming her frontrunner status, Elise Testone sang for her life after two consecutive weeks in the bottom three and Erika Van Pelt debuted a stunning new look, but only Heejun Han used the evening as an opportunity to directly address his critics. Singing Joel’s “My Life,” Han — who was knocked by the judges last week for his lackluster performance of Richard Marx’s “Right Here Waiting” — approached the judges’ table and sang to Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler. “Keep it to yourself, it’s my life,” Han sang playfully. “Go ahead with your own life, leave me alone.” Han began the song wearing a tux, but tore it off to reveal a T-shirt/ button-up combo. Han jumped into the audience at one point, and was so carefree with regard to hitting his proper notes that the whole thing bordered on parody. The judges didn’t quite know what to think or say about it; they praised him for having fun, but only to a point. “The music business will kick your ass,” Tyler told him. “At some point, you’ve gotta try to take it more serious.” Guest mentor Diddy didn’t seem to know what to make of Han either. “I don’t know if he’s an actor or a con man,” Diddy said. “I don’t even know if he’s Asian. He may be black.” (Han later told Ryan Seacrest Diddy is “confusing himself already.”) To round things out, Han also had an awkward confrontation with “Idol” style guru Tommy Hilfiger, telling him his style icons include Jessica Sanchez, Madonna and Michael Bolton. Han has clearly been studying “How to Win Friends and Influence People” during those late “Idol” nights. Back to Sanchez, Han’s style role model: She received a standing ovation from the judges, one of only two during the night, for her version of “Everybody Has a Dream.” “When God was giving out vocal chords, you were so at the front of the line,” Tyler told her. Lopez called it a “defining moment” for Sanchez, while Jackson called it “flawless” and “perfection.” The other standing O was given to perennial bottom-dweller Testone, who gave the evening’s most riveting performance, tearing through Joel’s “Vienna” with a vigor that proved she wants to stay in the competition. Jackson even bowed to her in a “Wayne’s World”-type “I’m not worthy!” gesture as the song came to a close. “Unbelievable,” he called it, saying she had a moment on stage, while Tyler called her melody “fantastic.” “You were all over the place and you still stayed in the room,” he said, one of those Tyler-isms that only he truly understands. Meanwhile, Van Pelt debuted a dramatic makeover that saw her long, blonde-and-pink hair chopped in favor of a short, angular, jet black ‘do inspired by Pink. The Rhode Islander sang “New York State of Mind” like a true New Yorker, but was told she should be more physical with her next performance. In the middle of the pack, Joshua Ledet — who brought the house down last week with his version of “When a Man Loves a Woman” — struggled a bit to connect with “She’s Got a Way,” a song he was admittedly unfamiliar with until it fell into his lap. Skylar Laine’s “Shameless” was inspired by the Garth Brooks version of the song — no matter the theme, Laine will find a way to give it a country once-over — which was “pretty good” and “good,” according to Jackson and Tyler, respectively. Phillip Phillips took “Movin’ Out” and “Phillip Phillips’d” it, according to Tyler, which is kind of what Phillip Phillips does to every song. (Jackson was overly enthusiastic about it, calling it “one of the best renditions of that song ever,” and Lopez called it “perfect.”) Hollie Cavanagh went for another big ballad with “Honesty,” which Tyler called the dreaded “P” word, “pitchy.” Jackson said she over-thought the song. “You’re better than that, come on now,” he told her. And Deandre Brackensick opened the show with a bouncy version of “Only the Good Die Young” that felt forced and unnatural. “I wasn’t jumping up and down because it didn’t show me anything special,” Jackson told him. Colton Dixon closed the show with Joel’s classic “Piano Man,” giving the song more of an emo feel; he “Colton Dixon’d” it, if you will. Jackson called it a “sensitive, touching, moving performance,” while J. Lo gave her highest compliment, saying the song gave her “goosies from head to toe.” One of the 10 singers faces elimination during Thursday’s “Idol,” which is set to feature a performance from Season 10 finalist Haley Reinhart. Madonna’s ‘Girl Gone Wild’ Video: Five Key Nods To Her Past

From ‘Vogue’ to ‘Human Nature,’ MTV News points out the many nods to the Queen of Pop’s legendary music videos. By John Mitchell Madonna in her “Girl Gone Wild” video Photo: Interscope The video for video for “Give Me All Your Luvin,” “GGW” is not plot-driven, but rather an assemblage of striking images that recall the dark, sexed-up era she ushered in with her “Vogue” video and which reached its apex with the release of her “Sex” book and Erotica album. Madonna makes references to her iconic past throughout the video, meshing vintage M with her current self seamlessly. Below are the five key references we noticed in the “Girl Gone Wild” clip: “Erotica” From Madonna’s big, diva-like bleach-blond hair to those chains and leather-brief-wearing men, the dark, sexy vibe here is pure “Erotica”-era Madge. The clip for “Erotica” was markedly grittier, employing camera filters and sleazy locations (and, you know, bridles and whips) to give off an S&M vibe. If “Girl” isn’t as gritty in its approach to sex, it’s also far less off-putting. The sex stuff in the “Erotica” video is more of an artful expression of fetishism than it a series of “wow, that’s hot” moments, like those featured in “GGW.” But as usual, M delivers plenty of edgy eye candy. “Vogue” Those moves! Those angular, cutting arm, leg and body movements. Check. A bunch of scantily clad male dancers posing in formation. Check. In addition to being shot entirely in black-and-white, the dancing in “Girl Gone Wild” is a direct callback to the sharp moves from “Vogue.” A few times in the video (check 1:10), Madonna and her dancers are definitely “vogueing” — or at least as close to it as she’s gotten since she struck her most famous pose in 1990. There’s also something to be said for the gay culture references in both videos. Madonna made vogueing mainstream in 1990 with her hit, but the highly stylized form of dance was actually born in the late-’80s Harlem gay ballroom scene (see the amazing documentary “Paris Is Burning” if you want to know where vogueing really came from). She embraced the connection then and appears to be doing the same here. In “GGW,” we have two male models gnawing on the same apple, dancers in heels (and little else) and many, many suggestive close-ups celebrating the male form. “Human Nature” The “Human Nature” video is most remembered for Madonna’s black latex bodysuit, and she resurrects the look for “GGW .” Beyond the suit itself, the “Nature” video also cast Madonna and her dancers in all black and set them against an all-white background, a style choice she uses frequently throughout “Girl.” Like the “GGW” clip, the vid for “Nature” was directed by a well-known fashion photographer, Jean-Baptiste Mondino, who also helmed Madonna’s controversial video for “Justify My Love.” “Justify My Love” Speaking of which, Her Madgesty is getting awful handsy with her sexy dancers here, and late in the video, we find Madonna and her dancers really going for it, writhing in a pile and feeling each other up. The “Love” video was, of course, banned from MTV in 1990 for its depictions of sex acts. Set in a voyeuristic hotel, the “Love” clip includes what we can only refer to as an orgy sequence, and she recalls that a bit here, albeit in a tamer fashion. The scene in “GGW” is less explicit because it’s not as direct about its subject matter — being sexy is part of the “GGW” narrative, while making a grand observation about full-on sex was at least part of the point of “Justify My Love.” “Like a Prayer” Madonna wouldn’t be Madonna without a direct reference to religious iconography. Here, we get a dancer wearing a crown of thorns. Her video for “Like a Prayer” famously featured Catholic symbols, including stigmata and burning crosses, and a dream about making love to a saint on an alter. Madonna herself has even donned a crown of thorns onstage. During her performance of “Live to Tell” on her Confessions Tour, Madonna sang from a massive mirrored cross while sporting the crown. Madonna Owns ‘Girl Gone Wild’ Title In New Video

Queen of Pop pays homage to her Erotica days with saucy black-and-white clip for second MDNA single. By Jocelyn Vena Madonna in her “Girl Gone Wild” video Photo: Warner Bros While Madonna favored vintage, kitschy, colorful images for her “Give Me All Your Luvin” video , the Queen of Pop opted for black-and-white sex for her just-released “Girl Gone Wild” clip . Shot by fashion photographers Mert and Marcus (who also did the album’s more multihued artwork), the video was the perfect homage to the singer’s foxy “Sex” book and Erotica days of the ’90s. Crunchy, sexy and edgy, the “GGW” clip is certainly the perfect response for anyone yearning for that Madge of yesteryear. Twenty years after Madonna had conservative-minded folks worried about her sexy influence over pop culture, the singer can still make us want her and whatever brand of sex she’s selling. Pleather, whips, chains and same-sex action define the images in the saucy clip. While “Give Me” featured pals Nicki Minaj and M.I.A., the only “Girl” in this video is Madge, who gets raunchy with a number of male dancers. The video opens with Madonna in full glamour mode (big hair and diva makeup) declaring how she wants to be good but just can’t fight the bad. We mean, who could blame her with all that eye candy around? Spastic shots of her doing yoga are intercut with ones of her dancing around and sexy male dancers posing with one another (and sharing an apple in a way we haven’t seen before). The video also features an electrifying dance sequence, with men in tights and heels, really calling attention to Madonna’s never-ending need to create memorable images. It’s clear this girl wants to have fun and she wants to be licked, kissed and grinded on by hot dudes. This is Madonna, so fans shouldn’t be surprised that she’s favoring erotic scenes in which she mugs for the camera with beefy guys all over her. Eventually, Madge proves she’s still got the moves when she joins the dancers for another choreographed sequence. As the video continues to show the singer and her dancers just being attractive with one another, the final shot is a close-up of Madonna, crying thick, black tears, proving that wild girls are saddest when the party is over. Mert and Marcus are best known for their work as fashion photographers, and that influence is certainly felt in this video. It plays out as if it’s a series of shots in a fashion magazine. MDNA, the singer’s 12th studio album, is set for release on Monday. “GGW” is the second single from it. What did you think of Madonna’s new video? Let us know in the comments!
