Chris Isaak Being Considered For ‘American Idol’ Judge’s Chair

Fellow crooner Harry Connick Jr. is also rumored to be in the running to replace Simon Cowell. By Gil Kaufman Chris Isaak Photo: Stephen Lovekin/ Getty Images Auditions for the 10th season of “American Idol” already kicked off in Nashville last week, but there has still been no word on who will replace departed lead judge Simon Cowell come January. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the acerbic Brit’s chair could be filled by one of a trio of American musicians whose experience in the pop culture machine has given them plenty of expertise on what it takes to make it. Though they’ve been typically tight-lipped about who might be in the running, the Fox network has reportedly been set on finding a well-known music-industry figure to take over the lead chair, with names such as former Sony Music boss Tommy Mottola and Madonna manager Guy Oseary popping up in the rumor mill. But the Reporter said that it is “Wicked Game” singer Chris Isaak who has emerged as a leading contender after meeting with show runners twice so far in pursuit of the gig. The soft-spoken Isaak — who has also acted on shows such as “Cold Case” and “Smallville,” and hosted his Showtime series, “The Chris Isaak Show” — certainly has the industry background and camera-ready personality. But another crooner, past “Idol” mentor and amiable modern-swing singer Harry Connick Jr. , has also reportedly been considered. Though he’s publicly coveted the position and was “given the once-over” according to the Reporter, Poison singer and singer reality-show star Bret Michaels is said to be out of the running. “The Apprentice” boss Donald Trump has also reportedly lobbied for the job, though given his longtime association with NBC, the continued success of his signature show and his lack of music experience, he seems an unlikely choice. Adding to the tension, Cowell is casting around for judges for the launch of the U.S. version of his singing competition, “The X Factor,” and the long-simmering rivalry between “Idol” executive producer Simon Fuller and Cowell is said to have set off a tug-of-war over at least one desirable candidate that both shows are eyeing. A spokesperson for “Idol” could not be reached for comment at press time. Fox told the Reporter that no decision is imminent, but the network’s new entertainment chairman, Peter Rice, said he expects the new “Idol” judge to be in place by early September in order to take part in the audition process. Who do you think should replace Simon on “Idol?” Write your comments below. Related Photos Who Should Replace Simon Cowell On ‘American Idol’? Related Artists Chris Isaak

Lady Gaga: From Pop Deity To Human Being, One Reality Show At A Time

Bigger Than the Sound wonders: Is Gaga the most everyman pop star around? By James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: Gabriel Bouys/ Getty Images By now, you are probably aware that Lady Gaga is an unstoppable moneymaking machine , an insatiable studio junkie , a high-ranking Polaroid executive , an honorary Hair Wars champion , a burgeoning fashion icon , the next Madonna , more popular than Barack Obama and quite possibly a member of the Illuminati . But, chances are, you didn’t know that she’s also a big fan of A&E’s “Intervention.” Or maybe you did. After all, she tweeted about it Tuesday, calling the show “informational, heartbreaking and inspiring.” And while the idea of Gaga sitting in a hotel room, hair done up in Diet Coke can curlers, cigarette sunglasses still smoldering on the bedside table, watching Allison huff duster (and subsequently walk on sunshine ) is rather amazing, it’s also important too. Because it’s just another step in the latest chapter of her career: her continued transformation from otherworldly pop deity into an actual human being. And perhaps I am reading entirely too much into one simple tweet about a phenomenally addictive reality show (about addiction), but now — more than at any point in her time in the spotlight — Gaga seems determined to be one of us. She chugs beer at baseball games (albeit while wearing a leather jacket and a bikini), crushes BBQ at Boston dive bars and spends her off-days in New York cooking for her dad, drinking and watching episodes of “Cops” (something she made a point of mentioning onstage at her tour kickoff in Montreal ). She spoke openly and frankly about her ex-boyfriend in an interview with Rolling Stone, and her newest song — a piano ballad called “You and I” — seems to be very much about reconciling with him, in perhaps the most un-Gaga setting imaginable: a dark and dirty bar. (It’s also worth noting that the songs sounds a whole lot like a Billy Joel B-side, and who’s more everyman than the Piano Man?) At this point, I don’t know what she could possibly do for an encore — maybe start Tivo-ing “The Real Housewives of New Jersey” or take on a disastrous adjustable-rate mortgage? — but the fact remains that right now, despite all her trappings, Gaga is probably the most openly human pop superstar on the planet (or at least the most open). Can you imagine any of her contemporaries — the Beyonc

Lady Gaga Will Be A Lollapalooza ‘Centerpiece,’ Perry Farrell Says

‘Her presentation is so overwhelming that some may overlook the music,’ he tells MTV Radio of over-the-top live show. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Sasha Hamrogue Lady Gaga Photo: George Pimentel/ WireImage Perry Farrell remembers Lady Gaga ‘s 2007 set at Lollapalooza, a sweaty, Saturday-afternoon affair that saw the then-brunet, yet-to-conquer-the-globe Gaga parade around in little more than a disco-ball bra and thigh-high stockings. He was impressed, but needless to say, he never thought he’d see the day she’d be headlining the fest. “I remember … she’s got dark-brown hair, she’s in a bikini, and she’s wearing thigh-highs and she’s sweating, because she was on at around 3 o’clock,” Farrell told MTV Radio. “Her music was cool, her show was kind of cool, but now, the production of her music, the people she’s surrounded herself with, the development of her stage show … it’s something that, when I think about Lollapalooza, in that gorgeous setting of [Chicago’s] Grant Park, with the amazing buildings all around us, lit up, I see her and her show as being as a centerpiece to the evening.” Yes, from side-stage curiosity to mainstage must-see, Gaga has come a long way in three short years, and Farrell — who’s already said that Lollapalooza will spend six figures to accommodate her massive Monster Ball stage — sees it as his obligation to help her continue on that climb. But he’s hoping the Lolla crowds won’t just focus on her stage show. After all, her music is pretty great too. “Her presentation is so overwhelming that some may overlook the music … but the truth is, her music, to me, is right where music should be. It’s on the cutting edge, but it’s [also] in the crosshairs of where every musician is aiming these days,” he said. “She’s this hybrid of Yoko Ono, sort of the Plastic Ono Band meets Madonna meets Elton John. She’s this beautiful crossing of those things [that] every musician is looking to find. Everyone’s looking for that sound, and I think she really hits it.” And though he realizes that not all Lolla fans are necessarily “little monsters,” he also hopes they’ll be won over by her set. After all, that’s sort of what Lollapalooza has been doing since it first started back in 1991: introducing kids to new artists, new scenes and, most importantly, new sounds. “We’re going to help her deliver it, just the way we did in 1991, when people didn’t go to rap concerts because they might be considered very dangerous,” he said. “[Back then,] a lot of those kids who went to Lollapalooza might not have seen Ice-T, but then, there he was. Same with Ice Cube. And that’s one of the things I guess I could say I pride myself in: I’m able to bring music that people are very curious about, and once they meet this music, they’ll really dig it.” What are you expecting from Lady Gaga’s Lolla set? Lady Gaga Overtakes Obama On Facebook: Fans Weigh In!

‘Her outfits are sexy and she’s just crazy,’ Gaga’s fan explain about her Facebook popularity. By MTV News Staff Lady Gaga Photo: Derek Storm/ Splash News NEW YORK — It goes without saying that Lady Gaga’s little monsters are as devoted to her as she is to them. So when news broke that Gaga had surpassed President Barack Obama in her number of Facebook followers , it really wasn’t a surprise to the Little Monsters MTV News spoke with after her opening night show at Madison Square Garden in New York. “Lady Gaga definitely passed Obama with the number of fans on Facebook cause she’s awesome,” Cathy said. “Her outfits are sexy and she’s just crazy.” Laura proudly flaunted her membership to the Mother Monster fan club proclaiming, “I’m a fan of her Facebook page. I’m one of the 10 million — really!” And it seems a key to the success of beating out the president on Facebook is the fact that Gaga isn’t a politician. “When you get into politics things get very, very sketchy and I think that’s why she managed to gain more fans than he did,” Frankie explained. “Cause as risqu

‘Without New York, I would not exist,’ Gaga tells NYC fans Tuesday night. By Maura Johnston Lady Gaga performs in concert (file) Photo: Getty Images Before her hometown headlining debut at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night (July 6), Lady Gaga tweeted a photo of herself standing in front of the New York arena’s marquee. The photo had no commentary except for the tag “#madisonsquaregaga,” and indeed, it seemed like she was on the verge of taking over the arena in the hours before she took the stage. Some fans were dressed as characters from her videos — the Diet Coke curlers from the “Telephone” clip were particularly popular — while others took her glammed-up aesthetic to the hilt, with glitter, elaborate eye makeup and giant hair bows ruling the night. The fashion statements were all the more impressive given the weather in New York, where temperatures soared past the 100-degree mark on Tuesday. Gaga’s Tuesday night concert was the first of three Monster Ball shows taking place this week in New York, which serves as the setting for the elaborately staged concert. During the course of her show, Gaga and her dancers veered all over the city, from the Lower East Side to the F train to Central Park. But it was obvious that Gaga was very aware that the fantasy world she’d created had been set up inside the arena where, as the young Stefani Germanotta, she took in quite a few performances by music’s biggest stars. “My name is Lady Gaga and I used to sit right over there, way far in the back and way up top,” she said at one point during the evening. She then reeled off a list of artists she’d seen during her past visits to the Garden — Madonna, Cher, the Rolling Stones, Elton John, Kiss. “I used to stare at this side of the room, and I used to think, ‘I’m gonna be up there,’ ” she continued. “Every second you watch me on this stage,” she told the crowd, “you remember, I was sitting where you are.” Later in the show, she dedicated a wrenching performance of “Speechless” to her father, who was in the audience. She recalled the days of him helping her carry a piano down four flights of stairs so she could bring it to shows in the early part of her career and said, while pitched over the piano, “Of all the drunk men in my life, Dad, you’re my favorite.” “Without New York, I would not exist,” Gaga then declared. “But I also would not exist without my friends,” she added, and after a lengthy rundown of the challenges she’d faced with the help of her pals she dedicated her new song “You and I” to them. Her performance of the rock-tinged track was full of passion, stretching into a near-epic where she pounded away on the piano. The obvious nods to New York sprinkled into the evening — both within the show and timed to tonight’s setting — only seemed to energize the crowd, and Gaga fed off the adulation. By the time the night came to a close, there was a triumphant feeling in the air. “We did it, little monsters,” she told the crowd after the night’s closing number, “Bad Romance.” “We made it to the Monster Ball! We made it to Madison Square Garden. “Thank you for making my dream come true,” she continued. “I love you so much.” What do you think of the Monster Ball Tour? Leave your reactions in the comments! Madonna Talks About Reining In Daughter Lourdes’ Style

Mother/daughter duo have teamed up for the juniors fashion line Material Girl. By Mawuse Ziegbe Madonna and Lourdes Leon Photo: James Devaney/ Getty Images Although Madonna has built one of the biggest pop careers in history on body-baring costumes, hip-thrusting dance moves, controversial music and all-around sensationalism, she doesn’t tolerate that type of nonsense when it comes to her teen daughter Lourdes — not when she’s heading to school, anyway. Madge, who is collaborating with 13-year-old Lola on the juniors fashion line Material Girl , said that while she appreciates her pop progeny’s daring approach to fashion, she’s not down with her daughter tarting it up for the classroom. “I always have two reactions when Lola comes into my room with an outfit on: One is, ‘Oh my God, she looks amazing, what incredible style.’ And then my second reaction is, ‘She’s dressed completely inappropriately for school,’ ” Madonna told People in a video interview. “I usually tell her to take off her 3-inch or 6-inch platforms and pull her skirt down just a little bit and take off some of the black eye makeup.” Even though Madonna has spent the better part of the last three decades strutting around onstage and entertaining millions of fans in some iteration of a figure-hugging bodysuit, the pop legend insists that her approach to Lola’s look is a function of Madge’s current identity as a regular ol’ mom. “She does have amazing style, but I am the typical mother, where I say, ‘Oh my God, you can’t go to school dressed like that!’ ” They may not agree when it comes to school clothes, but mother and daughter are working together on their Material Girl line, which launches August 3. While Madonna calls the shots when it comes to Lourdes’ home-room fashion, the diva said Lola’s style drives their joint collection. “My role is really to make sure we were all going in the right direction … and it was a line that I could stand behind and be proud of and feel good about and one that she could also feel represented her,” Madonna said. “I really like the way Lola dresses, and I think this line is absolutely an extension of her taste.” What do you think about Madonna and Lourdes teaming up for a fashion line? Kenny Wormald Lands Lead In ‘Footloose’ Remake

Hollywood newcomer and MTV ‘Dancelife’ alum snatches plum role after Zac Efron and Chace Crawford back out. By Mawuse Ziegbe Kenny Wormald Photo: IMDb A rising star with true dancing feet will step into the role of Ren McCormack in the upcoming remake of the ’80s hit “Footloose.” Dancer Kenny Wormald, who has appeared in videos for stars like Madonna and Prince and has hit the stage with Mariah Carey and Jennifer Lopez, will bring his footwork to the big screen. Entertainment Weekly reports that the Boston native (who proudly touts his “Southie” accent in his MTV “Dancelife” bio ) beat out thousands for the chance to take on the role that launched Kevin Bacon’s career in the ’80s. However, this isn’t Wormald’s first Hollywood gig: The dancer has also appeared in “You Got Served” and “Clerks 2.” Joining Wormald in the flick will be actor Dennis Quaid as Reverend Moore and Julianne Hough from “Dancing With the Stars” as Ariel. “Hustle & Flow” writer Craig Brewer penned the updated screenplay and will also direct. The choreography will be helmed by Jamal Sims, who worked on Madonna’s Sticky & Sweet Tour. Hollywood heartthrob Zac Efron, who has hoofed his way to stardom in musicals like “Hairspray” and “High School Musical,” was originally slated for the role as Ren McCormack but later backed out . Reports said the star wanted to take on more serious roles. Chace Crawford also dropped out of the remake because filming would have conflicted with his “Gossip Girl” production schedule. Filmmakers already have high hopes for Wormald. “When we discovered Kevin Bacon in 1984, we were both excited and gratified — and also knew the chances of ever duplicating that effort was a million-to-one shot,” producer Craig Zadan, who worked on the original and is back for the remake, said in a statement . “Decades later, Kenny Wormald proved history could repeat itself.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .

Glee Reality Search Canceled, But Will Fox Still Cast from the Audition Pool?

It’s hard to believe that Glee creator Ryan Murphy could believe in the pitfalls of overexposure — what with all those Glee soundtracks and Madonna tributes and White House appearances — but today’s news proves that Murphy thinks too much of Glee can be a bad thing. The planned Glee reality series, an American Idol -like competition that would air in the run-up to season two and cast three new roles , has been shelved . I know what you’re thinking: What about all those precious MySpace audition videos? Will their wannabe stars ever make it to regionals?
